Static VLANs assign switch ports to VLANs set by the network administrator. The VLAN assignment does not change unless the administrator changes the port assignment. Dynamic VLANs automatically assign ports to VLANs using information from the user device, allowing instant movability when a device is moved to another switch port. Dynamic VLANs require configuration of a VLAN database on a VLAN Membership Policy Server.
