Six Sigma and ISO
Six Sigma
 Six Sigma is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement. It was
introduced by engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986
 Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of the output of a process by
identifying and removing the causes of defects and
minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set
of quality management method
 A six sigma process is one in which 99.99966% of all opportunities to
produce some feature of a part are statistically expected to be free of
defects (3.4 defective features per million opportunities).
 Motorola set a goal of "six sigma" for all of its manufacturing operations,
and this goal became a by-word for the management and engineering
practices used to achieve it.
Steps for implementation for Six Sigma
Step 1 : Define the priorities of customer with respect the quality
 Product that are considered most important by the customers in evaluating the
quality of product are identifies.
 These attributes are called critical to quality.
 The customer’s perceptions of quality attributes is updated from time to time by
conducting customer survey.
Step 2 : Measure the processes and the defects arising in product due to the process
 The important processes influencing CTQ are identified and performance
measurement techniques are established for these processes.
 The processes are measured and defects arising in the product due to prcoesses
are identified.
Step 3 : Analyze the process to determine the most likely causes of defects.
 The key variable most likely to be responsible for variation in the process are
identified to find the reason for defect generation.
Step 4 : Improve the process performance and remove the cause of the defects.
 Specification limits of key variable are fixed and system for measuring the
deviations of variables is established and validated.
Steps 5: Ensure the improvements are maintained over time
 The modified process is subjected total regular interval of time to ensure that key
variable do not show any unacceptable variation.
ISO (International Organization for
Standardization)
 The International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) is an international standard-setting
body composed of representatives from various nation
 the organization promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial
and commercial standards. It is headquartered in Geneva,
Switzerlanda standards organizations.
 ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is
an independent, non-governmental organization, the
members of which are the standards organization of the
ISO 9000
 The ISO 9000 family of quality management
systems standards is designed to help organizations
ensure that they meet the needs of customers and other
stakeholders while meeting statutory and regulatory
requirements related to a product.
 ISO 9000 deals with the fundamentals of quality
management systems,
 ISO 9001 deals with the requirements that organizations
wishing to meet the standard must fulfill.
Evolution of ISO 9000 standards
 The ISO 9000 standard is continually being revised by standing technical committees
and advisory groups, who receive feedback from those professionals who are
implementing the standard.
 ISO 9001: Model for quality assurance in design, development, production,
installation, and servicing was for companies and organizations whose activities
included the creation of new products.
 ISO 9002: Model for quality assurance in production, installation, and servicing had
basically the same material as ISO 9001 but without covering the creation of new
products.
 ISO 9003: Model for quality assurance in final inspection and test covered only the
final inspection of finished product, with no concern for how the product was
produced.
 Two documents are provided by ISO as guidance to organization for
understanding various aspects of good quality system
 ISO 9000 : This document explains principle concept and applications
for understanding various quality system
 ISO 9004 : This document explain principle concept and application
guide to quality management and quality system elements.

ISO 14000
 ISO 14000 is a family of standards related to environmental
management that exists to help organizations (a) minimize how their
operations (processes, etc.) negatively affect the environment
 The standard's first requirement is that your company have a publicly
available environmental policy articulated by top management.
 It should be appropriate to the nature of the organization and include
commitments toward pollution prevention
 Each employee's role and position must be clearly defined, and all
employees must be aware of the impact of their work on the environment.
 Your company is responsible for ensuring that all employees are adequately
trained.
 The ISO 14000 standards aim at giving companies
direction for managing, measuring, improving and
communicating the environmental aspects of their
operations.
 Experts predict that the standards will influence the design
and manufacture of products, selection of raw materials,
marketing, the type of environmental data gathered and the
means by which data are exchanged internally and
externally.
 Organizations must continually monitor and document their
environmental effects and periodically review them to

  • 2. Six Sigma  Six Sigma is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement. It was introduced by engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986  Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of the output of a process by identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set of quality management method  A six sigma process is one in which 99.99966% of all opportunities to produce some feature of a part are statistically expected to be free of defects (3.4 defective features per million opportunities).  Motorola set a goal of "six sigma" for all of its manufacturing operations, and this goal became a by-word for the management and engineering practices used to achieve it.
  • 3. Steps for implementation for Six Sigma Step 1 : Define the priorities of customer with respect the quality  Product that are considered most important by the customers in evaluating the quality of product are identifies.  These attributes are called critical to quality.  The customer’s perceptions of quality attributes is updated from time to time by conducting customer survey. Step 2 : Measure the processes and the defects arising in product due to the process  The important processes influencing CTQ are identified and performance measurement techniques are established for these processes.  The processes are measured and defects arising in the product due to prcoesses are identified.

Step 3 : Analyze the process to determine the most likely causes of defects.  The key variable most likely to be responsible for variation in the process are identified to find the reason for defect generation. Step 4 : Improve the process performance and remove the cause of the defects.  Specification limits of key variable are fixed and system for measuring the deviations of variables is established and validated. Steps 5: Ensure the improvements are maintained over time  The modified process is subjected total regular interval of time to ensure that key variable do not show any unacceptable variation.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization)  The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various nation  the organization promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerlanda standards organizations.  ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is an independent, non-governmental organization, the members of which are the standards organization of the

ISO 9000  The ISO 9000 family of quality management systems standards is designed to help organizations ensure that they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders while meeting statutory and regulatory requirements related to a product.  ISO 9000 deals with the fundamentals of quality management systems,  ISO 9001 deals with the requirements that organizations wishing to meet the standard must fulfill.

Evolution of ISO 9000 standards  The ISO 9000 standard is continually being revised by standing technical committees and advisory groups, who receive feedback from those professionals who are implementing the standard.  ISO 9001: Model for quality assurance in design, development, production, installation, and servicing was for companies and organizations whose activities included the creation of new products.  ISO 9002: Model for quality assurance in production, installation, and servicing had basically the same material as ISO 9001 but without covering the creation of new products.  ISO 9003: Model for quality assurance in final inspection and test covered only the final inspection of finished product, with no concern for how the product was produced.

ISO 14000  ISO 14000 is a family of standards related to environmental management that exists to help organizations (a) minimize how their operations (processes, etc.) negatively affect the environment  The standard's first requirement is that your company have a publicly available environmental policy articulated by top management.  It should be appropriate to the nature of the organization and include commitments toward pollution prevention  Each employee's role and position must be clearly defined, and all employees must be aware of the impact of their work on the environment.  Your company is responsible for ensuring that all employees are adequately trained.
  • 11.  The ISO 14000 standards aim at giving companies direction for managing, measuring, improving and communicating the environmental aspects of their operations.  Experts predict that the standards will influence the design and manufacture of products, selection of raw materials, marketing, the type of environmental data gathered and the means by which data are exchanged internally and externally.  Organizations must continually monitor and document their environmental effects and periodically review them to
