Malaria is a common and deadly infection caused by a parasite called Plasmodium that is transmitted via the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is most prevalent in hot, tropical parts of the world like Africa due to suitable conditions for mosquito breeding. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, shivering and muscle pains. To prevent malaria, one should avoid mosquito bites by using nets, repellents, long clothing and staying in cool, screened areas at night when mosquitoes tend to bite. Early treatment within 24 hours of symptoms appearing is important to cure the disease.
