There are many different types of allergies including food, skin, dust, insect stings, pets, drugs, pollen, latex, mold, and cockroaches. Symptoms vary but can include sneezing, itchy eyes, rashes, hives, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Allergies are diagnosed through tests and treatments include avoidance of allergens and medications.
Ebola
Ebola is a dangerous virus endemic to parts of Africa that can cause severe illness or death through transmission of bodily fluids from infected individuals. While normally occurring as isolated cases, Ebola poses a serious epidemic risk if an outbreak occurs as it can spread quickly between people through direct contact with infected body fluids like spit. Symptoms initially resemble the flu but can worsen to include fever, bleeding, vomiting blood and diarrhea. Scientists still do not fully understand the origins of the virus or have a cure.
Salmonella
Salmonella is a bacterial disease that infects the intestinal tract and causes illnesses like typhoid fever and food poisoning. People usually become infected by eating contaminated food like meat, poultry, or eggs or drinking contaminated water. The main symptoms are diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within 12-72 hours, and the illness typically lasts 4-7 days. The disease is caused by salmonella bacteria rather than a virus.
Hepatitis c
Hepatitis C is a virus that can harm the liver. It is usually spread through blood-to-blood contact, such as from an infected mother to her baby during birth or from sharing needles. While hepatitis C may not cause symptoms in children, regular checkups are important to monitor liver health. There is no way for a mother to prevent passing hepatitis C to her baby. The virus can remain in the body for life, though medications exist as a cure once one is an adult.
Allergies
Allergies are things that annoy the body and can be present at birth or develop later in life. There are two main types of allergies: food allergies like celiac disease, eggs, fish, fruits, potatoes, and tomatoes, and body allergies like creams, shampoos, climate, and flowers. They cannot be infected and prevention involves avoiding allergens, seeing a doctor, and taking prescribed medications or creams.
Alzheimer
Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly with memory loss and difficulty recalling recent events. Over time, symptoms worsen and later stages involve problems with daily living. There are three main phases - mild, moderate, and severe - with increasing memory loss, confusion, and dependence on others for care. While exercise may benefit daily living activities, current treatments only temporarily improve symptoms and do not stop or reverse the progression of the disease. Alzheimer's risk increases after age 65 and is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors.
