MATTER

What its matter???
Measuring mass
• Mass it is measured in Kilograms (kg) or grams (g). Different types of scales
are used to measure mass.
The 3 types of measurig mass
Solid
Liquid
Gas

What is volume???
Volume refers to the amount of space the object takes up. In other
words, volume is a measure of the size of an object, just like height and width
are ways to describe size. If the object is hollow (in other words,
empty), volume is the amount of water it can hold.
Who we measured the volume
• Volume is measured in litres or mililitres. Cubic centimetres can also be used
to measure volume.
• 1 cm=1 ml
• Measuring cylinders can be used to measure the volume of liquids and solids.

Properties of mass
General Properties
Are common to all
matter. For example
, all bodies have mass
and volume.
Specific Properties
Are different to each type
of matter. For example
each type of matter has a
particular color, hardness,
flexibility and density.
Density
• Density is a characteristic property of a substance. ... The mass of atoms,
their size, and how they are arranged determine the
density of a substance. Density equals the mass of the substance divided
by its volume; Objects with the same volume but different mass have
different densities.
Mesuring Density
• To calculate the density of an object, we first need to know its mass and its
volume.
• Follow the steps to calculate the density of a steel nut and bolt.
Does it sink or float???
• When an item goes to the bottom of the water, we say it sinks. Whether an
object sinks or float in a liquid depends mainly on two factors: density and
buoyancy. ... For an object to be buoyant, or float, it must have less density
than what it is floating in, or it has to have something attached to it that
helps it float.
