Down syndrome is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra chromosome 21. It was first described by Dr. John Langdon Down. People with Down syndrome have 46 chromosomes instead of the typical 46, with the extra chromosome causing delays in physical and mental development. While the cause is unknown, it occurs when there is an extra chromosome in the 21st pair. Those with Down syndrome often have characteristic physical traits and may experience medical issues such as heart defects, eye and vision problems, hip issues, and thyroid problems.
