Latches are asynchronous electronic logic circuits with two stable output states. There are four main types of latches: D, T, SR, and JK latches. An SR latch has two inputs - SET (S) and RESET (R) - and two complementary outputs (Q and Q'). The state of the latch depends on whether input S or R is activated. A D latch similarly has one data input and two complementary outputs, but removes invalid states that can occur in an SR latch. Latches can be either active-high or active-low, depending on whether a high or low input triggers a state change.

6.1 Models for Sequential CircuitsElevator example:
6.1.1 Block Diagram representation
Memory devices:
- Semiconductor Flip-Flops
- Magnetic devices
- Delay lines
- Mechanical relays
- Rotation switches
- Etc…
This circuit can be represented by the following equations:
Vector Notation:
- All the vectors are time dependant
- Vector y has the value y(tk) at time tk.
- Input signals xi and output signal zi may assume a variety of forms
6.1.2 State Tables and DiagramsThe state diagram is a graphical representation of a sequential circuit in which the states are represented by circles and state transition of the circuit are shown by arrows.
State table : all circuit input vectors are listed across the top, while all state vectors are listed down the left side. Entries in the table are the next state and the output.
In practice, the state diagrams and tables are usually labeled using symbols rather than vectors. For example consider a sequential circuit with two present state variables y1, and y2. Then y= [y1 , y2]Therefore the vector y can have any of the four possible values:
In general, if r represents the number of memory devices (number of states) in a circuit with Ns states then
Example: Consider the following sequential circuit with one input x, two state variables y1 and y2, and one output z.
The state diagram is:
Let assume that the circuit is initially in state A. now consider the application of the following input sequence to the circuit:
Hence the input sequence applied to the machine in state A cause the output sequence
Z=0100110111
And leaves the circuit in its final state C.
6.2 Memory Devices-Most memory elements are bistable electronic circuits, that is, they exist indefinitely in one of two possible states, 0 and 1. - Binary data are stored in a memory element by placing the element into the 0 state to store 0 and into the 1 state to store 1. - The output of the memory indicates the present state. - The input of the memory indicates the next state. - Each memory element has one or more excitation inputs, so called because they are used to “excite” or drive the circuit into the desired state.
Two memory element types
The Two memory element types most commonly used in switching circuits are latches and flip-flops.1- LATCHES
A latch is a memory element whose excitation input signals control the state of
the device
A set latch: the excitation input forces the output of the device to 1.
A Reset latch: the excitation inputs force the device output to 0.
A Set-Reset latch: a latch with both set and reset excitation signals.
Timing Diagram of SR LATCH
2- FLIP-FLOP:
A flip-flop differs from a latch in that it has a
control signal called clock. The clock signal
issues a command to the flip-flop, allowing it
to change states in accordance with its
excitation input signals.

Automobile Management System Project Report.pdfKamal Acharya
The proposed project is developed to manage the automobile in the automobile dealer company. The main module in this project is login, automobile management, customer management, sales, complaints and reports. The first module is the login. The automobile showroom owner should login to the project for usage. The username and password are verified and if it is correct, next form opens. If the username and password are not correct, it shows the error message.
When a customer search for a automobile, if the automobile is available, they will be taken to a page that shows the details of the automobile including automobile name, automobile ID, quantity, price etc. “Automobile Management System” is useful for maintaining automobiles, customers effectively and hence helps for establishing good relation between customer and automobile organization. It contains various customized modules for effectively maintaining automobiles and stock information accurately and safely.
When the automobile is sold to the customer, stock will be reduced automatically. When a new purchase is made, stock will be increased automatically. While selecting automobiles for sale, the proposed software will automatically check for total number of available stock of that particular item, if the total stock of that particular item is less than 5, software will notify the user to purchase the particular item.
Also when the user tries to sale items which are not in stock, the system will prompt the user that the stock is not enough. Customers of this system can search for a automobile; can purchase a automobile easily by selecting fast. On the other hand the stock of automobiles can be maintained perfectly by the automobile shop manager overcoming the drawbacks of existing system.
3. What is Latch?
Latches are asynchronous – which means, the output of
the latch depends on its input.
There are four types of latches:
D, T, SR and JK latch
4. Introduction:
• Latch is an electronic logic circuit with two stable states
i.e. it is a bistable multivibrator.
• Latch is a type of temporary storage device.
• Latch has the bistable stable (two stable) states.
• There are two inputs and two outputs of the latch.
• The outputs of the circuit are compliment of each other
5. Working
Latch circuits can work in two states depending on
the triggering signal being high or low: Active – High
or Active – Low.
• In case of Active – High latch circuits, normally both
the inputs are low. The circuit is triggered by a
momentary high on either of the inputs.
• In case of Active – Low latch circuits, normally both
the inputs are high. The circuit is triggered by a
momentary low on either of the input
6. SR latch
The basic storage element.
There are two inputs R (RESET) and S (SET)
There are Two outputs Q and Q’
Where Q is never equal to Q’ and both are
complement of each other.
The latch of NOR gate is also called the ACTIVE HIGH
INPUT LATCH.
The latch of NAND gate is also called the ACTIVE
LOW INPUT LATCH.
If Q=1 the condition is set
If Q=0 he condition is reset
7.
8. D latch
• The D-latch stands for DATA LATCH.
• The D-latch has one input but two outputs.
• NOT gate is used in the D-latch.
• D-latch removes the invalidity of the SR latch.
• Means D-latch gives correct compliment inputs on the S=1
and R=1 in NOR GATE LATCH (Active high input latch).
• And S=0 and R=0 in NAND GATE LATCH (Active low
input latch).
• If Ǫ=1 (high) then the latch is in the SET state.
• If Ǫ=0 (low) then the latch is in the RESET state.
