their attitudes towards learning
the English Language.

Difference in attitudes

Pupils study English just to pass their exams.

  • 2.  How are pupils’ attitude formed? What influences their attitudes towards English and learning?
  • 3. 1- Pupils’ attitudes to learning English and what influences them. 2- Finding out about pupils’ attitudes. 3- Ways of developing positive attitudes towards English. 4- Teachers’ attitudes to their own English.
  • 4. 1- PUPILS’ ATITTUDE TO LEARNING ENGLISH Through the pupils’ comments teachers can guess what are their attitudes towards learning the English Language.
  • 5. Some of the factors that influence pupils are: Teaching methods Seeing a need for English outside school Personal preferences, interest in languages
  • 6. Difference in attitudes beteween age groups YOUNGER CHILDREN OLDER CHILDREN Influenced by their feelings for their teacher and parents opinions. Tend to be more enthusiastic. Teaching methods. Influenced by what they friends feel about English. Less interested, embarrased and hostile. Teaching methods
  • 7. 2- FINDING OUT ABOUT PUPILS’ ATTITUDE Teachers’ views towards their pupils’ attitudes: Children have to study English because it is in the curriculum. Pupils’ attitudes change as they move up the school. Children are influenced by the youth culture.

  • 9. 3- WAYS OF DEVELOPING POSITIVE ATTIUDES TOWARDS ENGLISH Why don’t pupils like learning English? Pupils only enjoy the lessons when the teachers is doing games or singing songs. Pupils study English just to pass their exams. Pupils rely on the teacher to motivate them. The teacher may have limited resources or materials to teach English.
  • 11. 4- TEACHER ATTIUDES TO THEIR OWN ENGLISH Teachers attitudes may affect the students’ attitudes. If you boost your confidence, you will improve your performance.
