Brakke.
Reflection on my Practicum experience
The greatest obstacle that I had to overcome during my practicum was
when one of the students got injured with a nail that was on the wooden floor.
His leg was blooding and the boy started to cry. Immediately I went to help him
to stand up and with the help of Eugenia, my mentor teacher, we took him to the
manager´s office where the headmistress called his parents. At the same time,
my pedagogical partner stood with the rest of the students till I came back.
Then, I returned to the course to continue with the class and Eugenia
accompanied the boy till his parents arrived. I think that it was the only critical
incident that I had to deal with.
During the course of my practicum I had to improve the pitch of my voice
because there were many times in which the students at the back could not
hear properly when I was explaining the instructions of the activities or when I
made them questions. The class that I enjoyed most was when we did the
Intercultural Project because the pupils were curious about Jasmine’s life.
Almost all of them participated during the class, they made questions and they
also answered questions that she made them. It was very nice to see them so
engaged in the class. I also liked this class because it was different from what
students are used to do, and I think that it is also a reason why they were so
motivated. There were other instances where students were motivated too. For
example when they played games such as “Bingo” or “memo test”, they were
also very motivated when they had to practice oral production since this is an
activity that they do not normally do.
I think that working with a partner requires a lot of time to reach an
agreement, for example to decide the kind of activities that students have to
solve. But at the same time, it is very productive. In my case, it was very useful
because my pedagogical partner helped me a lot when I was giving the classes
and I also helped her when she had to teach the classes. I definitely
recommend it, because it is easier to work with somebody else, more ideas
come up and the class is also more organized.
Ailén Bailo 2017
At the beginning of my practicum I was a bit scared and nervous because
I did not know how students would react to work with new teachers, and I was
afraid of not being able to manage the class. However, the first class that I had
to teach helped me a lot to realize that I could do it, that it was not impossible.
With the passage of time I started to create bonds with the students. I was not
afraid anymore, I really enjoyed going to school and teach. Finally, when we
were finishing the practicum I felt sad, especially the last day because the kids
hugged me and asked me not to leave. But at the same time I was very happy
because I could face this challenge.
When I was observed I felt quite relaxed; I tried to do my best in all the
classes during my practicum. I think that it is very useful the feedback that the
teachers give us because it helps us to realize our weak points so we can
improve them. The comments that the teachers made me after the class were
very helpful because I could ask them questions and reflect about the class.
Office hours were very helpful too, especially the first ones because we were a
bit lost and everything was new, we did not know how to make a lesson plan, or
how to organize topics.
I felt accompanied by the teachers, they were always helping me not only
in office hours but also by e-mails, I also felt very comfortable and accompanied
by the mentor teacher. She was very nice with us; she helped us a lot with
institutional aspects that we did not know. I think that even though I will always
need to learn more I am prepared to teach at primary school now. I am very
happy with my practicum, it was an excellent experience.
