2. Research topic
• Attitudes and motivational factors in learning
English Language among Form 6 students in a
rural school.
3. Background of the study (setting)
• Study the motivation and attitudes of
students in a rural school in learning English.
• Focus on Form 6 students who learn English as
a second language.
• Factors that affect the students’ motivation in
learning English (self-efficacy, environment,
attitude, opinions).
4. Statement of the Problem
• Students are demotivated in learning a
language due to various factors, this will lead
them of being inattentive in class, unable to
master a language and being passive in the
classroom
• Adana Bilim(2013), Tran and Baldauf Jr. (2007)
said that students lose their enthusiasm
towards language learning due to negative
feelings.
5. • Limitation and restriction of the study
- small sample size: cannot represent the
whole population.
- no comparison: lacking of time.
6. Objectives of the study
1. To identify the students’ attitude towards
English language and the learning of English
language.
2. To determine the factors affecting the
students’ motivation in the learning of English
language.
7. Research questions
1. What are the students’ attitudes towards
English language and the learning of English
language?
2. What are the factors affecting the students’
motivation in learning English language?
8. Theoretical perspectives (one theory
to support your study)
• Attribution Theory attempts to explain the world and to determine the cause of an event or
behavior (e.g. why people do what they do).
• Attribution theory assumes that people try to determine why people do what they do, that is,
interpret causes to an event or behavior[1]. A three-stage process underlies an attribution:
- Behavior must be observed/perceived
- Behavior must be determined to be intentional
- Behavior attributed to internal or external causes
• Motivation Theory
- The theory states that the intensity of a tendency to perform in a particular manner is
dependent on the intensity of an expectation that the performance will be followed by a definite
outcome and on the appeal of the outcome to the individual.
• Self-efficacy, or confidence as it is commonly known, is one of the most enabling psychology
models to have been adopted into positive psychology. It is the optimistic self-belief in our
competence or chances of successfully accomplishing a task and producing a favourable outcome.
9. Significance of the study
It is hoped that this study can provide insights to
the English language teachers about students’
attitude and motivation in learning so that the
teachers can stimulate a better and active way
of learning English language.
