Student achievement scores dropped at a K-6 school after many Vietnamese refugees who spoke little English enrolled, comprising 1/3 of the student body. The principal helped scores rise by finding ways to communicate with families in their native languages, implementing new teaching strategies, and engaging students and families in achievement goals. The principal learned the importance of measuring student growth over time rather than just end scores, and using student-level data to set individual goals in order to help students catch up.
