Testing of Textiles (Lab)
Experiment No. 02
Experiment Name: Study on Yarn Lea strength tester.
Introduction: A lea strength tester measures the strength of one lea
yarn. Onelea means 120 yards. Strength is a measure of the steady force
necessary to break a material and is measured in pound. The m/c works in
constantrate of extension.
Objectives:
 To determine yarn lea strength.
 To calculate the countstrength product.
Apparatus:
1. Cotton Yarn
2. Warp reel
3. Lea strength tester
4. Calculator
Machine Figure:
Machine Description:
 Name Of the Machine : MecStretch XT
 Origin:India
 Brand: MAG
 Company: Mag Solvics (Pvt.) Ltd.
 Features of the Machine :
1. Accurate determination of strength of lea skein.
2. Vertical type accommodates easily on wall.
3. Constantrate of extension principle.
4. Strength measurementup to 300lbs to 0.3readability.
WorkingPrinciple: (Constant Rate of Extension)
 At first one lea cotton yarn is measured by wrap reel.
 Now, the firstsample is fixed with the upper jaw J1 and the lower jaw
J2.
 The m/c is started and observed the dial until the sample is torn out.
 When the sample is torn out the m/c is stopped and the reading is
taken.
Calculation:
Lea Strength = 79.32lbs/lea [120yards=1lea]
C.S.P (CountStrength product) = Lea strength × Yarn Count
=79.32×30
=2379.6 (C.S.P of given sample)
Result:
The strength of Cotton yarn = 79.32lbs/lea.
The Count Strength product(C.S.P) = 2379.6
Limitation:
All the Yarn doesn’tbreak at the same time.
Remark:
Itis considered that fibers having C.S.P less than 1800 arebad or weak, between
1800-2200 areaverageand greater than 2200 arestrong. Fromour experiment
we see that our samples’ averageC.S.P is 2379.6 which is greater than the
standard 2200. So finally we can say that these yarns havegood strength fibers.
