Rib structure is the second family of knit structures where wales of face stitches and back stitches are knitted alternatively on each side of the fabric. Rib fabrics are produced on machines with two sets of offset needles. The 1x1 rib structure has perfectly balanced stitches with high elastic recovery in the width direction. The 2x2 rib structure has 2 technical face loops and 2 back loops per repeat, making it popular for cuffs and waistbands. Rib fabrics have the same appearance on both sides with moderate lengthwise and very high widthwise extensibility, thickness, and no tendency to curl.

2. Introduction
Rib, also called 'Double-knit’ is the second family of knit structures.
Rib requires two sets of needles operating in between each other so that
wales of face stitches and wales of back stitches are knitted on each side of the
fabric.
Rib fabrics are knitted on machines with off-set arrangement of two sets of
needles.
3. Definition
A double-knit fabric in which the rib wales or vertical rows of stitches
intermesh alternatively on the face and the back of the fabric. Rib knit
fabrics have good elasticity and shape retention, especially in the
width direction.
5. 1X1 RIB :
The 1x1 rib is a perfectly balanced structure.
The elastic recovery of 1x1 rib fabric is exceptionally high along the width.
2X2 RIB :
The main difference 1X1 & 2X2 is it composed of 2 technical face loops
and 2 back loops per repeat along the course.
The 2x2 rib is most popular for the cuffs and waist bands for the coarse
gauge knit wears.
6. Basic characteristics
The 1x1 rib is a perfectly balanced structure.
The torque in the yarn is neutralized by the loops forming on the two
side of the fabric alternatively; no curling will occur on the edge.
The elastic recovery of 1x1 rib fabric is exceptionally high along the
width.
When relaxed the fabric shrink so much that only the technical face
loops can be seen on both sides.
7. Feature of rib circular knitting
machine In rib circular knitting machine, there are two
needle bed. One set of needles are mounted on a
vertical cylinder & other set of needles are
mounted on horizontal dial.
The cylinder and dial needles are rib of gaiting
(the dial needles are midway between the cylinder
needles). Off set arrangement of needles.
Both cylinder & dial needle bed should have two
types of needle (short & long needles).
8. A fabric in which both back and face loops occur along the course, but all
the loops contained with in any wale are of the same types.
A rib structure implies a knitted fabric with face and back loops occurring
in the same courses but not in the same wale.
Rib fabric can be produced on V – bed machine and footwear machine.

11. We can identify the Rib structure fabrics as following properties:
1. Same appearance in both sides of rib fabric.
2. Lengthwise extensibility of the fabric is moderate and width wise
extensibility is very high (50-100%).
3. The fabric extensibility area is high.
4. The fabric is much thicker and warmer than plain woven.
5. No tendency to curl .
