There are several types of intracranial hematomas that can result from head trauma: 1) Intracerebral hematomas are caused by areas of brain contusions merging together appearing as hyperdense lesions on CT scans with mass effect and midline shift. 2) Epidural hematomas occur between the skull and dura when a skull fracture causes dural laceration, most commonly in the temporal bone region. 3) Subdural hematomas occur below the dura from tears in bridging veins or cortical lacerations, and can be acute, subacute, or chronic depending on time since injury.
