Otitis media is inflammation of the middle ear. Acute otitis media is a rapid onset infection in the middle ear shown by symptoms like ear pain, discharge from the ear, fever, loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. Recurrent otitis media is defined as more than 3 episodes in 3 months or more than 4 episodes in 6 months. The pathogenesis involves infection and dysfunction of the Eustachian tube, which normally equalizes pressure and drains secretions from the middle ear. Dysfunction impairs these functions and allows bacteria and viruses to enter and the host response causes inflammation.
