The document discusses developing a theoretical and conceptual framework for research. It explains that a theoretical framework presents the theory that explains why the research problem exists, while a conceptual framework operationalizes the theory and gives direction to the study. The document provides guidance on formulating each framework, including specifying the theory, relating it to other work, and connecting it to the research objectives.

THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORKS:
objectives:
1. Discuss the different types of models and frameworks used in research framework
2. Discuss the use of theoretical/conceptual frameworks and models in the research.
3. Differentiate theoretical/conceptual frameworks and models
4. Recognize the best suit theory or theoretical model/framework for particular research study
5. Develop conceptual models/framework, best suit for particular research study.
What is a theoretical framework?
A theoretical framework is a summary of the researcher’s theory regarding a particular problem that is developed through a review of previously tested knowledge of variables involved. It identifies a plan for investigation and interpretation of the findings.
It relates to philosophical basis on which the research takes place and form the link between the theoretical aspects and practical components of the investigation undertaken. Therefore it’’ has implications for every decision made in the research process".
Theoretical framework can be considered as a conceptual model that establishes a sense of structure that guides the research process. It includes the variables a researcher intends to measure and relationships he/she seeks to understand. Essentially, this is where a researcher develops a “theory” and build his/her case for investigating that theory.
The theoretical framework is the researcher’s presentation of a theory that explains a particular problem and it is not based on his/her suspicions alone.
Theoretical framework is presented in the early section of a dissertation mainly in chapter two of the report and provides the rationale for conducting your research to investigate a particular research problem.
It involves a well-supported rationale and is organized in a manner that helps the reader understand and asses the perspective of the researcher.
When developing a theoretical framework:
The researcher start by describing what is known about the variables involved, what is known about their relationship, and what can be explained thus far.
One need to investigate other researchers’ theories behind these relationships and identify a theory (or a combination of theories) that explain his/her major research problem.
The researcher need to consider alternative theories that might challenge his/her perspective.
One also considers the limitations associated with his/her theory and quite possibly that problem could be better understood by other theoretical frameworks.
Significance of a theoretical framework:
It helps the researcher to consider other possible frameworks and to reduce biases that may sway the researcher’s interpretation.
It clarifies researcher’s implicit theory in a manner that is more clearly defined.
It demonstrates that the relationships proposed by the researcher are not based on his/her personal instincts or guesses, but rather formed from facts obtained from authors of previous research.

Synthesis
Essential Questions
1. What is synthesis?
2. What is the difference between explanatory synthesis and argumentative synthesis?
3. How does synthesis differ from other processes or terms used in developing the literature review?
4. What is the difference between summary and synthesis?
5. What are some strategies one can use to synthesize research studies and literary articles?
6. How does synthesis t into the literature review?
Introduction
A primary aspect of writing the literature review is to focus and contextualize the study, which requires the
writer to generate information to substantiate the topic and problem as demonstrated in the publication of
prior knowledge in scholarly literature (Mertens & McLaughlin, 1995). In writing the literature review for a
dissertation study, the researcher needs to place the topic or problem in the broader scholarly literature as well
as in an appropriate historical context of the eld. Additionally, the doctoral learner should distinguish what
research has been done in the eld of study as well as what needs to be done. Articulation of important
variables and phenomena relevant to the topic should be included and synthesized to demonstrate a new
perspective on the literature and prior research on the topic. There will be inconsistencies and tension in the
literature, which should be claried and discussed. The doctoral researcher must illuminate the scope and
discuss limitations of the existing literature. Achieving these goals requires a variety of writing and research
skills, one of which is synthesis. This chapter of the textbook presents information related to the skill of
synthesis and how it is a critical component of the literature review process.
What Is Synthesis?
Synthesis includes acts of constructing or bringing together the different elements or strands of information
that contribute to a body of knowledge on a topic. Synthesis in the literature review is the way the researcher
integrates the analysis and evaluation of the many research studies and literary works of authors who have
published on the topic. Researchers will approach synthesis in a variety of ways, sometimes inuenced by
their own schemas.
Synthesis should include a critical analysis of the literature wherein the doctoral researcher identies the
most important ideas read, discusses the importance of those ideas within the context of his/her own study,
and integrates all or most of those ideas, whether they are similar or dissimilar (Paul & Elder, 2006). By doing
so, the literature review can provide the opportunity to look across many disciplines that include the same
concept or construct for a comparative or contrasting analysis.
The writer should corroborate,
compare, and contrast ndings
among the many sources.
When synthesizing, the writer should go beyond describing philosophy or ndings, using critical analysis to
compare and contrast works. Some strate ...

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
1. Developing the
theoretical and
conceptual framework
Heddy Hidalgo Rivero
Adapted from (Khan, 1999)
Zorn and Campbell (2006
2. Theory
Theories are constructed in order to explain, predict
and master phenomena (e.g. relationships, events, or
the behavior). In many instances theories are models of
reality.
A theory makes generalizations about observations and
consists of an interrelated, coherent set of ideas and
models.
Theories not only imply the answer of some hypothesis,
but also, lead to the formulation of some others
3. Formulating the Theoretical
Framework
The theoretical framework of the study is a structure
that can hold or support a theory of a research work.
It presents the theory which explains why the
problem under study exists.
Thus, the theoretical framework is but a theory that
serves as a basis for conducting research.
Theories used to explain the research object represent
the vision under which we approach such an object
and somehow the ways we should take in doing so
4. Formulating the Theoretical Framework
Purpose:
• It helps the researcher know his/her research object
• It helps the researcher see clearly the variables of
the study;
• It can provide him with a general framework for data
analysis;
• It is essential in preparing a research proposal using
descriptive and experimental methods.
5. How should the theoretical framework be formulated?
1. The author should specify the theory used as basis
for the study
2. The author should mention the proponents of the
theory
3. The author should cite the main points emphasized
in the theory
4. The author should support the exposition of the
theory by ideas from other experts;
5. The author should relate his theoretical proposition
with his own study.
6. How should the theoretical framework be formulated?
1. It is the author’s job to synthesize or make sense of
the literature. Simply describing or quoting the
literature may be adequate, but in doing so the writer
loses the argument as well as his or her own voice
2. The author has to relate the theories and the
concepts included among themselves. He also has to
convey the relationship among the sources he is
considering (Zorn and Campbell, 2006)
3. The author has to relate his/her research object to
the main proposals oh the theories he/she is exposing
7. How should the theoretical framework be written?
1. An introduction that provides an overview of the focus and
objectives of the review, along with a thesis statement
2. A set of themes that categorize and make sense of the
sources reviewed and develop the thesis (e.g., sources that
support a particular position, those opposed, and those offering
alternative views)
3. Explanation and evaluation of conclusions reached by key
sources, and explanation of how they converge and diverge
from the conclusions reached by other source
4. Conclusions, reasonable speculations, and gaps that emerge
after considering the sources as a whole
Zorn and Campbell (2006)
8. Concept
After formulating the theoretical framework, the
researcher has to develop the conceptual framework of
the study.
A concept is an image or symbolic representation of an
abstract idea. Chinn and Kramer (1999) define a concept
as a “complex mental formulation of experience”.
While the theoretical framework is the theory on which
the study is based, the conceptual framework is the
operationalization of the theory.
9. Conceptual framework
It represents the researcher’s own position on the
problem. It gives direction to the study.
It may be an adaptation of a model used in a previous
study, with modifications to suit the specific inquiry.
Besides showing the direction of the study, through the
conceptual framework, the researcher can be able to
show the relationships of the different constructs that
he wants to investigate.
It allows the researcher to construct his/her own terms
and to clarify those being used in the study
10. How should the conceptual framework be formulated?
1. cite your conceptual framework or paradigm;
2. Identify your variables;
3. Point out the dependent and intervening variables;
4. Show the direction of the study.
