This document discusses naming ionic compounds by first naming the cation and anion components. It provides rules for naming main group and transition metal cations, such as naming sodium as the "sodium cation" and copper as the "copper (II) cation". It also provides rules for naming anions by taking the root of the element name and adding "-ide", such as naming chloride and bromide anions. Examples and practice problems are given to demonstrate applying these rules to name common cations and anions.
