Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 are double stranded DNA viruses that cause infections in humans. HSV1 typically causes oral lesions while HSV2 typically causes genital lesions. The virus enters cells, replicates its DNA, and causes the cell to rupture releasing new virus particles. The virus can enter a dormant stage in nerve cells and be reactivated later to cause new lesions. Histopathology of lesions shows ballooned epithelial cells called Katzank cells with characteristic nuclear changes. Diagnosis involves visual exam, biopsy showing inclusion bodies, viral culture or antigen detection via immunofluorescence.
