INTRODUCTION:
Herpes simplex: is a viral disease caused
by the herpes simplex viruses
HISTORY:
researchers have identified the evolutionary origins of human herpes
simplex virus split from chimpanzees 6 million years ago while the
latter jumped from ancient chimpanzees to ancestors of modern
humans – Homo erectus – approximately 1.6 million years ago.
HISTORY:
French scientist Emile Vidal
confirmed that herpes is a
contagious skin condition
and was transmitted from
person to person.
VIRUSES ARE DISCOVERED
BY DIMITRI IVANSKI IN
RUSSIA
460-370 BCE Herpes is
formally recognized by
Hippocrates as a
"Creeping and Crawling"
lesion.
HISTORY:
14 – 37 Roman Physician Celsus irons
the sores to prevent spread.
1939-FRANK BURNET
DETERMINES THAT HERPES
CAN REMAIN DORMANT IN
NON-INFECTED AREAS.
INTRODUCTION:
• Herpes simplex viruses are ubiquitous,
host-adapted pathogens that cause a
wide variety of disease states
• HSV belongs to the alpha herpes virus
group. It is an enveloped virus that is
approximately 160 nm in diameter with a
linear, double-stranded DNA genome.
• up to 80% of herpes simplex infections
are asymptomatic. Symptomatic
infections can be characterized by
significant morbidity and recurrence.

TYPES OF HERPES VIRUS :
HSV-1: Also known as oral herpes, this type can cause cold sores and
fever blisters around the mouth and on the face.
HSV-2: This type is generally responsible for genital herpes outbreaks.
ORAL & GENITAL
HERPES:
How it spread ?
ORAL HERPES
GENITAL HERPES:
RISK FACTOR:
1- Are a woman. Women are more likely to have genital
herpes than are men. The virus is sexually transmitted more
easily from men to women than it is from women to men.
2- Have multiple sexual partners. Each additional sexual
partner raises your risk of being exposed to the virus that
causes genital herpes.
PREVENTION :
1- Use, or have your partner use, a latex condom during every
sexual contact
2- Avoid intercourse if either partner has an outbreak of herpes in
the genital area or anywhere else
3- Avoid touching an open herpes sore or something that has been
in contact with the herpes virus, such as infected razors, towels,
dishes, and other shared items.
