3. RESEARCHStrengths of my research:
o In depth analysis allowed me to develop and learn about
both complex and simple editing skills that I wanted to use
in my own video, the effect this had in my video was
significant as it opened my eyes to the type of video I
wanted to make.
oAnalysing my chosen song helped me to understand and
interpret every part of the song, meaning I was able to put
my full emotion and true feeling into the video.
Weaknesses of my research:
oI could have analysed a wider variety of music videos, which
may have broadened my ideas and knowledge that went
into making and planning my video. If I had looked at a
wider variety I may have been able to add more complex
editing and filming ideas to my video.
oI feel like I could have added more detail into my music
video research, which may have made my work more
complex and possibly widened my knowledge a bit more.
4. PLANNING
Planning my video went well for me as the storyline was
based on personal experience, so was relitavely easy to put
tings into place to make the video effective to an audience
with similar experiences to myself. As I have already lived
through the experience, it allowed me to plan each small
detail perfectly to exactly how I wanted it to be. When
putting my storyboard together, I knew exactly what I
wanted to happen in each part of the video, which helped
massively as it made the planning go smoothly, and allowed
me to be able to choose shot types and timing perfectly so
that the emotion I wanted to be felt when watching the
video was there in every single shot.
To improve my planning further, I would look into the
precision of each individual shot, and give a further
explanation to each one, as this may have given my video
even more detail and emotion throughout it all. I would also
go through my shot planning and make sure each shot had
a full in depth description, so when it came to filming
everything would have been even more perfect.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
When planning my video, my time was managed pretty well
as I was able to stick to the plan for what I needed to do
pretty easily, majority of work was completed either early or
on time, however I did have a few issues concentrating
when trying to work outside of college, as I find it difficult
to work outside of a classroom. This was mainly resolved y
getting as much as I could done in class, and not leaving
myself a lot to do outside of college.
When filming my video I did tend to go off schedule a bit as
I had set myself times, which had to change due to plans
changing- when I was supposed to be filming on the beach,
we ended up arriving late, which altered my filming
schedule greatly, however I still made sure I got every single
shot filmed that I needed for my video.
If I had more time to produce my work, I would have looked
into more complex techniques which I could have used in
my editing time, which may have made my video more
intriguing to its audience.
7. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
When I initially produced the idea for this video, I was inspired
by the idea of binging childhood images into my video, as it
tells the background of the story being told in the video, I liked
the way in ‘Story Of My Life’ by One Direction merged the past
and the present together to show the difference in the band
members.
I liked the way that portraying the past through the change
between then and now, as I felt this told the audience a story of
my life and how I have struggled yet fought through everything,
reminding them that things may not be easy but nothing is
impossible nor does it last forever. To make I unique, I made
the photo fit the screen and added glitching transitions into the
editing, to keep the audience entertained with the way the
photos change on the screen.
9. TECHNICAL QUALITIES-
CAMERA
When researching, I looked at Lewis Capaldi’s music videos,
and I particularly liked the acting and shots that he included in
the narrative parts of his videos. So when planning my film and
filming I tried to use what I had seen to create similar shots in
my own style. I particularly liked the scenes on the beach and
in the house, so I used this in my video, with my own twist to
make it unique to me.
I like the way how my video is similar to Lewis Capaldi’s, as I
feel like this gives my video a unique element to it, as well as
having intertextual references to other people’s work. Overall I
was pleased with the way this has turned out, as the setting
and narrative fit perfectly with my song choice.
11. TECHNICAL QUALITIES-
EDITING/POST
When editing my video, I liked they way that the back
and white theme represented the past, and the darker
side to what things were like, which is subverted by the
colour scenes of the present day, as it shows the change
in happiness and how things get brighter with time. To
me I felt it would give the audience a sense of fight and
revolution throughout the video, as the storyline
develops and shows they the present day is a brighter on
than what it once was, and no matter what giving up
shouldn’t be an option.
I like the way that both my video and ‘History’ tell a story
and show significant change from the past to the present
day, as it signifies the journey hat has been progressed
upon and the outcome of all the hardship and strength it
took to be where things are today.
13. TECHNICAL QUALITIES-
EDITING/POST
When editing I has the idea that I wanted to make my
photos glitch as they came onto the screen, so I decided
to give it a go. I had seen the way Kanye West had made
his footage glitch and wanted to make mine look similar
to that.
I watched a few tutorials on YouTube on how to make my
photos glitch, and carefully went through each process
in order to make my video glitch the exact way that I
wanted it to be.
I wanted to make my video different than how I had seen
it on Kanye West’s video as I didn’t want all the bright
colours, as it didn’t fit the colour scheme of my video.
I like the way my glitching has turned out, as it flickers
on the screen at the beginning of each photo being put
up on the screen, I feel it keeps the audience entertained
as they watch the photo flicker in front of them before
14. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I am pleased with the way my video has turned out as I feel
the way it looks gives across the message that I intended to
show to the audience. I love the way the black and white
scenes in my video show the bad times and the colour
shows the good, as this was my intention, to distinguish a
clear difference between the two parts of the narrative. If I
could improve, I would have made the camera quality
better, as my footage was all filmed on my phone, rather
than a camera, however in the black and white parts of the
video I feel this adds to the mood of the video, as it shows
the audience that during the bad times, things are far from
clear and are often hard to see through.
I feel my video is strong as it has a powerful narrative which
is told through the visuals and emotion from the song, I feel
like the two work together to put the message of my video
across to its audience. I do feel that the glitch effect does
let the video down a bit as I feel like I could have done more
to make it look better in the video.
16. AUDIENCE APPEAL
The target audience of my video was age 16-24, which I
feel I have appealed to well, as the main subject of my
video is mental health, which is a common social issue in
the current day that many individuals go through alone
with no help, the aim of my video was to make those
struggle feel as though they have someone there who
has been through a similar experience, that they are not
alone and things do get better.
The characters in my video appeal to the audience, as it
is a young female who is struggling, which I feel can be
related to on so many different levels. The way the girl
has quite obviously struggled but grows hugely as the
video progresses shows to its audience that everyone has
a story that never ends but will always change for the
better, even at its very lowest points.
18. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
The way it has been edited- transitioned into one
Can tell editing has been carefully done
Watching it I feel part of the narrative
Moving and interesting- gives viewer into background of growing up
Brilliant acting
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Has ex boyfriend in it- video was made before you split up so is sad
to know that happened
Hugging is a bit repetitive
19. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
Video ran smoothly, and portrayed a great deal of emotion
Loved the black and white sections and how they contrasted with the
colour sections and the mood that comes with both sections.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Make all the transitions the same when the different hugs are taking
place, so that they match.
20. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
The use of saturation to show the progression of the narrative and
tone of the video was effective
The use of complex narrative was effective as it told a genuine story
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Have a range of transitions when looking at the photographs, as it
can be repetitive
21. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree that some things in my video can be a bit
repetitive, such as the transitioning as they could have
varied more than what I made them do, rather than using
the same thing over and over again when looking at the
photos. I also love the amount of emotion and feeling
that I have put into my video, as I feel this was the best
way to connect with the audience and get the message
across.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
Personally I disagree that the 3 hugging scenes are
repetitive as I believe that is the point I the video where
things begin to look up and show a happier time, and the
hugging to me symbolises that.
22. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
Based on the feedback I have been given, I would look into
changing around the transitions in-between photos to make the
video more appealing to the audience, rather than the same thing
happening over and over again. I feel if I did this it would appeal to
the audience better, as it keeps them guessing as to what is about
to happen next, rather than the same thing happening each time, it
would also portray the message of the song and narrative better
too as it would allow me to make the viewer think about each shot
spontaneously as the transitions would be different each time.
I would also make the hug transitions match each other, so that it
fits in the video better and makes it more aesthetically pleasing to
the audience, which may make them be able to relate to the video
more, as the three scenes will merge together nicely, portraying
the love and emotion that was intended to be felt during this part
of the video.
