The document provides guidance for tracking the production process of a music video. It is broken into two main sections: Filming and Editing.
For the Filming section, the document prompts the user to explain what worked and didn't work during filming. This includes any technical, logistical, personnel, planning, and next steps issues.
For the Editing section, the document prompts the user to record their edit progress, decisions, problems and include screenshots where possible. It asks the user to discuss notable moments in the editing process, what worked and didn't work, and how they adjusted to problems.
2. PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
⢠This document is for you to track the progress of your
production â filming, editing and post-production.
⢠This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
⢠The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
⢠For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
⢠Remember, images often show what youâve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
3. FILMING
Explain what worked and didnât work about your filming and how you
managed this covering the following areas:
⢠Technical â using the cameras and any technical equipment; this
could be how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt
with problems with batteries, etc
⢠Logistical â did your locations work? Did you have any access
problems? Did it rain?
⢠Personnel â how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down?
How did you manage this?
⢠Planning â did your planning help? Do you think it could have
worked better? How?
⢠Next steps â do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you
changed your video? How/why?
4. TECHNICAL
My technical equipment only involved my phone and laptop my phone was an I
phone and the quality of my clips turned out very high which was a success for
my music video it was also a bonus because I didnât have to take more time
trying to book to use any equipment in college which wouldnât have been the
best due to COVID. My laptop was used to transfer my clips on using a USB yet
again I found this bit easy as I've had previous experience with this. I also dealt
with my phone battery well as I made sure I fully charged it before going into a
different town (Leeds) as I was also on my phone a lot I made sure to get the
filming done first just to be safe that it wouldnât run out. My narrative behind my
music video didnât need to include any lip syncing and I think it looked a lot
better without this anyway due to the fact the artist is male and my performer is
female. Therefore I didnât have any struggles with this and didnât have to re take
when filming as much. The only main problem which occurred with my technical
issues was the storage on my phone because beforehand I didnât have much
storage and when filming clips it wouldnât let me film anymore so I had to go
through and delete a few apps to clear this up I did manage to get the clips but
for next time I will make sure to check before filming as this wasted a bit of my
time.
5. LOGISTICAL
Within my plan I had locations of and town, restaurants and sophies house
in my music video I did include all of these locations which was a success
the one which I didnât think would happen was the restaurant and town
because of COVID and the amount of people around but I managed to get to
these locations and film them whilst following the restrictions. I was happy
to get a town such as Leeds because the location is a big city as my clips
from the train window of the view of the city made my video pop out even
more this is a benefit as it will grab my audiences attention. The restaurant
we went in was quite easy and luckily you didnât have to pre book so we got
straight in and was able to film easy. However one location struggle was the
weather on the day I was filming outside it was raining one we had got to the
location and I couldnât change the plan to a different day as this was quite
last minute and I wouldnât had time to film again. In this location, this made
me realise that next time I should have a back up plan due to the weather
and make sure to check the weather predictions before going out. It would
have been better without the rain but when looking back on the video it
didnât look as bad as I expected. I also didnât have any problem with not
being able to access any locations I got into every part and had permission
when filming in sophies house which was a huge benefit towards my plan.
6. PERSONNEL
As my cast was only one person which was my best friend, Sophie it was a
lot easier as I know her well but we struggled sometimes when filming trying
to keep serious and not laugh this did take a few attempts sometimes but we
manage to end up getting professional and serious clips in the end which
was the main focus. Sophie is confident in front of a camera which was the
main reason I chose her because she doesnât act nervous or not know how
to act therefore this made my clips turn out even better not being camera
shy so it wasnât as hard even if other people are looking in a busy area.
However some days was a disadvantage because on days which I was free
she wasnât so we had to work around specific times this means we didnât get
as much time as I would have wanted to film and some days got cancelled
due to us both being busy this lead to me not getting as much clips as I
would have liked so therefore in the future I know to always check to make
sure the performer doesn't have a busy schedule. But we managed to at
least had two in total days of filming and in my plan I had originally wrote
that but when it came to it I realised that wasnât enough time as I wanted to
get the clips exactly how my mood board and shot list looked.
7. PLANNING
Overall, I am very happy that I produced a whole planning PowerPoint
beforehand as this was my main source to look back on when filming the
music video because this included all my information and my main
storyboard which was the pictures of how I wanted the shots to turn out.
This also was where I had wrote the whole narrative of my music video and
without my planning I would probably be creating a music video which
didnât make sense and had no meaning. Although sometimes with my
planning it did make me confused at points as I had different ideas and too
much information wrote down which made me not focus on one idea but
once getting half way through my plan it helped me to choose a idea and my
song. Another main problem was that I hadnât finished my whole planning
PowerPoint before I filmed I was half way through and decide to film this
was a struggle as I only had some parts of planning which I knew to produce
and I was left struggling what to film next this would definitely be a main I
improvement for next time to make sure all my other PowerPoints are up to
date before filming as I believe this would make it a lot more easier and less
time consuming, however I am very happy with my planning outcome.
8. EDITING
⢠Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in
this section
⢠Include screenshots with annotations, statements, etc
where possible
⢠Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose
to work the way you did.
⢠Follow the structure and what to include on each slide as
this is necessary for evidence for assessment
⢠Pick notable moments in the editing process and discuss
them, what worked/didnât work and why, how you adjusted
to problems. Discuss how you worked and what you
learned from the process
9. WHAT WENT WELL
[3 EXAMPLES]
DISCLAIMER-(I have included in a lot more detail a full screenshot
process in my evaluation PowerPoint)
My first edit which went well was my colour
schemes before I didn't realise how much a
difference adding a bit more colour to a clip could
make which I am glad I used this tool because it
made my clips look so much more to life and almost
like a film. Using the colour tools I firstly mixed
around and tried different colours to see which
ones matched better in this picture the colour I
focused on was a yellow and orange tint this
brought out the colour of the grass and buildings as
before I didnât really like the clips because they
looked dull and boring, but this made a huge
difference to the outcome of the music video as a
whole. At first, I struggled with using the colours as
I havenât ever used these on premier to edit clips so
at first, I did saturate them a little too much but
after a while I got the hang of this.
The main reason behind using the
colour wasn't just to make it look
better in fact it was a way of
showing my performers emotions
so that my audience would get the
hint and follow on with this and
this turned out exactly as planned.
10. 2ND EXAMPLE:
Next, is my second example of a focus which went well
for me and this part was unplanned because I though of
this idea when I had firstly thought I finished my music
video but I watched it back and realized it seemed very
confusing Asif there was no narrative then I thought of
the idea of adding in âflashbacksâ and âmemoriesâ of
times when she was firstly dealing with the breakup
therefore I edited these by adding a black and white
colour scheme because this will hint straight away to
my audience of the meaning. And I believed black and
white would work well together with her emotions in
this part of the video (just like in the first example)In
these parts I also added in transitions when switching
clips this is because It makes it also look like a
flashback when a clip disappears and another ones
takes it over. Overall I was glad about this outcome and
is definitely one of my favourite parts to the music
video. I also had the hang of using the colour schemes
at this point, so it didnât take up as much time as I
thought.
11. 3RD EXAMPLE:
Lastly, my last edits which I included which went
well was the transitions involved these where
mainly the faded ones which the pictures shown
are the faded transition where you can see two
clips at one time, I loved including these
because they made the clips look a lot smoother
and more ongoing instead of just having clips
switch fast, I was able to include slow motion
into the transition so when it fades it isnât going
too fast and the audience get chance to see. I
wanted my outcome to look a lot more
professional therefore I believed these where a
good input with the video as these also remind
me of when they are included in films which my
narrative is set out just like a film. I believe this
also made a huge difference to my music video
as I knew there was something missing before I
added these in, I also tried not to add in too
many because I didnât want it to be constant
fading or my audience would get bored easily.
12. WHAT PROBLEMS DID
YOU HAVE? [3
EXAMPLES]
1.One of my main problems was that when filming I didnât have enough clips due
to the fact I didnât have enough time to get more as I had to move onto editing this
meant that when I was editing I had to cut down the length of the music this
created a problem because it didnât really sound as good as the music just cut off
and didnât end well therefore I had to add in a transition for the audio to slowly
fade this made a small improvement but I would have preferred to have enough
clips for the whole audio.
2.Another problem which occurred was that I didnât really like the outcome of my
clips this is because I think the whole narrative wasnât fully clear and my clips
sometimes looked a bit random when I watched back the whole music video I feel
Asif I could have done better with my filming because my camera angles wasnât
as good as I expected due to the time and I rushed when filming.
3.A final problem was also the length of my clips because I didnât make long
videos they where short clips so when I got to editing I realised my video wasnât
over 2 minutes at the begging therefore I had to add in different transitions and
slow motions to clips to add on more time, this also links to the main problem that
I didnât film as much clips as I planned and wanted to this will definitely be
something I would know for next time is to take my time and this made me have
too much time for editing because this didnât take as long.
13. NEXT STEPSâŚ
What are the main things youâve learned from this project?
Pick a minimum of 5 to discussâŚ
The first main thing I have learnt is that I need to focus on producing the project
more than focusing on planning because the outcome is more Important and to
make sure I'm not rushing through filming and taking my time to get good quality
and professional clips, another main thing is to make sure that my performer and I
have fully discussed days before I can plan out to make sure we are free on the
same days because this causes problems such as never being able to film as we
both are busy on the same days. I also have learnt that planning before hand is an
important thing because this makes filming a lot easier and not as stressful and
speeds up the filming process (this did for me). This also links in with my story
board which I have also learnt to make sure I always have this on me especially
whilst filming because my shots are all laid out and I had labeled all the different
shot types I was using so I didnât have to think of the spot. Lastly a final thing I
have learnt is how big of a difference editing can make to a video as before I hadnât
ever edited that much on premier especially with a video and after experimenting
this it helped me to gain experience and how much better the video looks with
added transitions and different colours schemes now I know this for next time
when I need to edit videos in the future.
