The document provides a self-evaluation and reflection on Josh Bailey's production process for a final project. Some key points from the evaluation include:
- Josh's strengths in research were finding inspiration from other videos and incorporating different methods into his own work. However, he did not properly account for production restrictions.
- Better planning and contingency planning could have improved his rate of work and final draft, as injuries forced him to rush filming closer to the deadline.
- Time management was also an issue, as injuries required filming in low light conditions with limited resources.
- Peer feedback noted the quick transitions kept the music video engaging but improvements could have included reducing continuity errors and adding a clearer narrative.
3. RESEARCH
Personally I’d say the strengths of my research I did for
my final product consisted of knowing where to look for
examples and inspiration. The videos I did look at had in
some way a trait or characteristic about it that I had
imagined I could make for my project. This way I could
compare all methods and point out the best and think of
way to incorporate that into my work. So in that respect I
am strong in having original ideas for my work then
looking up ways to improve them.
One of the weaknesses for research is that I didn’t prepare
for the restrictions of production, and let my imagine run
wild. While this can be seen as a good thing it is also very
important to aim for work that is doable with your limited
time and resources.
4. PLANNING
Looking back on my work, I definitely could have
planned it all better and that would have greatly
improved my rate of work and final draft. In the end it is
the contingency that needed to be planned better as my
original plan fell through after I was injured and unable
to film over half term thus forcing me to make-do and
film closer to the deadline when my hand had healed.
If I created a better contingency plan in the case of
accidents like that happening I might have been able to
have had more time to edit and read over/ make changes
to my production PowerPoint and in turn improve my
work in general.
However in a way, I somewhat did manage to execute my
contingency in the form of my original idea but toned
down to fit the restrictions of time and crew that were
free.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
Once again, my biggest regret with production and this project
altogether is how I managed my time. The essence of a good
product is putting time into it and a lot of effort but not too
much, my first idea before filming was to acquire a camera from
college and film over the halloween half term, then a couple days
before my crew and I scheduled to film I had a workplace accident
and was unable to use my left hand.
The situation initially started panic as I now had no idea when we
were all available to film again as my camera man was going on
holiday soon as well as the burn.
In the end I had no choice but to film in my times after college or
work which left me with the problem of lighting and weather as
shooting in the winter presented the issue that most my shots are
now dark and need to be lit up by a few lights. My time
management could have definitely been handled in a better way
but due to reasons out of my control I was reduced to using my
torch as a means to see anything in shot.
6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
Before filming I made sure the camera that was given to us was all in
working order, the battery was charged, we had a spare in case and
there was an SD card inside. I took it out of college on the Wednesday
before half term along with a tripod, set to return on the first Tuesday
back. Over the week I couldn't film due to afore mentioned reasons
and didn’t have a cameraman to do it either. When I returned the
camera to college however I ended up borrowing another one from a
friend and began filming with that. While not having chance to film
before I took advantage of this and planned all the shots that we are
able to do in the short time that we have left, this way when it came to
filming I knew exactly where to go and the positioning of the shots.
Alfred, my camera man is confidant with cameras and has used them
in his own projects before, this way when I told him what I envisioned
he knew what I was meaning and shot it how I wanted. The many
techniques we used included dramatic zoom ins, panning, tilting,
rolling and framing. Some of the shots though were impossible to do
as we quickly ran out of daylight time.
7. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POSTThe editing process of the film was always the most important part
of production, if the editing didn’t go well then the all that was
unique about the idea isn't presented in music video and has no
compelling elements to support it. So in that respect I needed to
waste no time while in the editing phase to hopefully achieve a
good music video.
Editing consisted of mainly cutting files we filmed and adding
transitions between them or just placing them together, for
example there were scenes where I was shot running and they were
cut together to look as if I was running through all these locations.
It was reasonably easy to make looking back on it, even though
there were moments that didn’t go as planned, continuity errors,
clips not matching up with the song which made the whole ordeal
quite stressful as I would end up having to re-adjust every clip just
to make one cut go in time with music.
8. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
Personally I think the execution of my ideas and pressure
of completing work in time was inevitably what caused my
final draft of the music video to be disappointing in my
eyes. I’m happy that I was able to finish my video in time
but at the cost of dropping elements that I wanted to
include, such as a wider range of transitions for example
swiping and rotating the camera along with fades and
other special effects. If I had included all these features
there would be arguably more aesthetic qualities as
oppose to having one prominent quality throughout the
entire video being the change of locations every now and
again.
I’m happy with my video in the sense it has intriguing
aesthetics instead of being a lip-sync or dance routine as I
find that those aesthetic qualities would not go well with
9. AUDIENCE APPEAL
For audience appeal I think I have a good job in making the
audience want to watch more which is obviously the point, I
accomplished this by making the next scene, let alone the
ending, impossible to predict; you never know where the
next location will be. I believe the song helps with this as
well as it is a catchy and upbeat song that I think people
may like.
On the other hand the audience appeal could be improved
to reach out to a wider amount of people. This could have
been done by further editing my video to include more
interesting and experimental techniques, the
cinematography could be better as well to keep people
enjoying each and every shot taken for the film so it is
visually impressive.
11. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
I liked the quick transitions between shots, it kept the music video
enjoyable to watch and easy to watch. The pace of the music video fit
the song perfectly and also made the music video easy to watch
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
The whole project did not seemed finished in the end but with a
shortage of time the music video being not perfect is justified in the
end. The video included lots of continuity errors throughout and
could have been improved by a few retakes of shots.
Feedback by Oliver Coleman
12. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
I thought the cohesion of shots was well done; I liked how everything
is reversed in the end to provide a sense of narrative circularity.
I liked how the music was integrated – it fit well with what was being
shown
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
The narrative felt somewhat confused; the proceeding of events was
not entirely clear and I felt it could have used more direction
There could have been a wider variety of shots – some sequences felt
repetitive to an extent
Feedback by Alfred Pick
13. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
I liked that a range of settings were used in the video to make it more
exciting.
The acting was very convincing and you stayed in character.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
There could’ve been a clearer link between the lyrics and visuals.
A deeper narrative could’ve been used.
Feedback by Holly Smith
14. PEER FEEDBACK
SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I strongly agree that the narrative in the video could be a lot clearer and
less convoluted. The execution could be improved upon and made to
make a lot more sense.
I also agree there should be a wider range of shots, this initially was the
plan however because of time limitations I was forced to remove some
shots I had planned
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I feel as though the narrative, although limited, was more present than
given credit for. In my opinion the problem was a lack of depth.
Additionally, I believe that the shots used were more varied than some
have said. I used medium long shots, medium shots, close-ups and
pans.
15. PEER FEEDBACK
SUMMARY
Overall I found my peer feedback to be very helpful and
informative, this can be very useful for future projects that
might suffer the same problems my music video did. The
insight provided warned me to the issues that were
consistently pointed out, such as a lack of narrative focus.
Based upon this, I would alter some of the shots as some
feedback suggested a sense of repetition, pay more attention
to continuity errors and establish a clearer narrative. I believe
that this could improve my product because it had a few
flaws that prevented it from being as good as it could be.
