3. RESEARCH
I feel like the research stage of the project went well and I drew
inspiration from various videos within the drill genre however
some of the things I was trying to replicate and re-boot within
my own video didn’t go exactly to plan but for the most part I
am very happy with how my video ended up, I focused my
research on the groups zone 2 and Harlem Spartans which
eventually led me to using one of the latter's songs “I don’t
mind by Harlem members Blanco and Bis, the song itself is an
ominous trap rap style beat that is slow paced but at parts the
rapping is fast and upbeat. I decided to use this song because
at the time this song had just come out and was doing very
well numbers wise, if I had to go back and change what song I
used I probably would as there was several songs that crossed
my mind and debated changing the song at parts, however
decided to stick with it as I had focused a lot of my planning
around it. I looked at a lot off different filming editing
techniques within the genre and it is fair to say that the genre
of drill has a very urban, rough around the edges feel which I
wanted to show in my own work and I feel I did this well. I am
glad I decided to look at a lot of videos before creating my own
4. PLANNING
I tried to stick to my planning as best I could but things never
go exactly to plan, I had to go out and film on four separate
days and each day a problem was encountered most notably on
the first day we couldn’t get the college camera to work in the
way we wanted and instead decided to come back another day
and use a better camera (cannon 650 d) which was a lot better
due to the auto focus feature it also allowed me to create more
crisp looking videos. I planned to go to more locations that I
actually filmed at but due to weather and light conditions it
would’ve been very hard to get the footage I wanted so instead
settled on locations which were suitable to the conditions laid
out in front of me, i planned to use smoke grenades and
references to drugs which I was told I would be disqualified if I
were to do so which later I found out was allowed, I feel like I
was lied to and set back by this and wasn’t able to showcase
what ideas I actually have and present them in an artistic way. I
wanted to use a green screen to create smooth transitions as
well as interesting visuals but didn’t get round to doing this
because of limited time. There was a lot of visuals that I
planned on getting but didn’t and because of this I feel like my
final product doesn’t showcase how good my video could have
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
Time management Is something I have always struggled
with as some parts of my life aren’t very well organised
I'm often late due to this. Filming was no exception I left
things fairly last minute but it worked out pretty well I
think. One negative I came across was I would always
start filming to late in the day that after a couple of
hours it would get dark and we would lose the light we
needed for filming so had to cut the day short. If I had to
go back and do it again I would start filming very early in
the morning like 9am just to ensure that id have enough
light throughout the day to get the shots I needed. I
finished my editing on time but once again was very last
minute as I only finished it on the final lesson on the
Wednesday which was the final opportunity I had to edit.
If I were to have more time to produce my work I think it
would be a lot better than it is currently however I am
6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
CAMERA
Because I don’t have my video on hand to analyse and compare to
other work I will just have to show other works and talk about the
similarities and differences between my own work and others.
I used medium range shots with low camera
angles at various points in my video.
I used drone shots at the starts and end of my
video which Is a convention of my genre, a lot
of videos use tracking and panning drone shots
I tried to replicate this in my own work by doing
drone shots of things like trees, cars and one of
my locations fountains abbey.
I used a lot of low angled close up shots in my
work due to it once again been a convention of
the drill genre this is because the camera angle
portrays dominance.
7. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
I used similar flashes to transition in and out of
shots I did this by changing the brightness and
contrast in premier. This works really effectively
as it allows you to switch between shots whilst it
still looking smooth and not jumpy.
I used something similar to this in my work,
they’ve edited a VHS overlay over the top of the
footage which is an effective technique to create
interesting visuals. You often see this technique
used in a lot of drill videos because it switches
up the video and adds a new dynamic.
In a section of my video I have words of the song
coming on and off of the screen compared to
this where they have used the artists name, I
must say mine is not at the level of this as they
8. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I think my video turned out very well, as I think and have been told
by others it actually looks like a drill video done to a good standard.
All of my transitions and cuts are done to the beat and in time with
the song. There is a lot of conventions of drill on show in my video
for example, visuals of cars with both the camera and with a drone.
Lots of low angle shots on the actors to convey power and
dominance. Lots of close ups. Editing wise my work is quite
aesthetically pleasing to the viewer with colour manipulation
throughout the video, I did this because it makes my video more
interesting to the viewer than just a bunch of clips in time to music,
just adds another dimension to my video. I also added black bars for
most of my video to make it more professional however there is
sections which don’t have black bars. This is done deliberately as
some sections just do look better without also switches it up and
keeps it interesting. Transitions wise I use a lot of flashes to cut
between shots in addition to using them to the beat of the song. I
fade in and out of black between shots as well which looks smooth
9. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I believe my video appeals to the type of people who listen to
the genre of drill. It appeals to them due to the aesthetic
qualities that it posses. These qualities include, it is all in time
and cut to the beat, there are interesting transitions and
effects. It flows nicely between shots with flashes and fades in
and out of black which is used In a lot of drill videos. I have
drone shots in my video which takes my piece to the next
level and makes it interesting visually. The movements of the
people in the video and how they act in general looks like
something you'd see in a drill video, when I showed one of my
mates a section of my video he did think it was an actual drill
video and liked it. The colour manipulation makes my video
more interesting as they're is something more going on in the
clip than just the clip itself. the feedback I have had so far of
my piers and my friends has been good and they all seem to
11. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product? The transitions
between the scenes in the video fit in time with the beat of
the song, all the footage was in time with the rhythm of the
song and I liked how the colors of the mask stood out
against the darkness of the video. I also like how you had a
black and white background and the square box of the
video playing in front of it contrasted with the colors in the
background.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
Some of the actions the person was doing in the video,
maybe you could of changed some of the movements they
were doing to something else because it was a bit repetitive.
There’s also a long pause near the end of the video where it
just goes black you could of added some extra scenes in
there instead of it just being black.
12. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product? The visual style was very
entertaining and unique with the changing colors allowing it to
stand out among other song of the same genre.
The acting was very good as when the lead singers scenes were on
it thank to the actors mannerisms it felt like has was actually
singing the song.
The scenes shot for the music video really work well with the song
as the song it self feels like a gangster song and with the actors
mannerisms and clothing making the scenes themselves feel like
footage of actual gangsters it really helps bring the music video
together.
What improvements could have been made to the product? Certain
scenes in the night could be lit up a bit more as sometime it
becomes jarring and distracting when you can’t see much of what
the other actors are doing when its too dark to see them.
Another improvement could be to make sure the text at the
beginning is the same font so it makes the video feel more
consistent.
13. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product? I like the use of
very bright visual effects and that they happen quite
frequently it comes across as very consistent and it fits
well with the rhythm and beat of the song. The cuts and
pacing is really good and the live action footage is very
high quality and looks very professional and crisp.
What improvements could have been made to the
product? I wasn’t too keen on the words that come up on
the screen, it looks kind of old fashioned. Also the colour
makes it so the words don’t show up very well, I think
maybe a lime green or yellow would’ve fit better with the
visuals and would’ve showed up more effectively.
14. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with the feedback I was given to some extent
where one person (feedback 3) was on about how the
footage looks fairly professional and Is cut to the beat as
well as most of the footage looking crisp. I think the
camera work we did when we filmed worked very
effectively considering neither me or harry had used a
camera previously. I also agreed with what person in
feedback 2 to was saying about the main actors
mannerisms and how they were in time with the song, in
addition to this the shots in the video in general suited
to the genre that I chose (drill) and looked urban and
gangster. Something else that I agreed with the person in
feedback 3 was the consistency of the visual effects with
the changing colours on the masks across the video, I
thought the effects would make my footage look more
interesting and aesthetically pleasing to the viewers and I
believed I achieved this to a good standard.
15. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I didn’t agree with was the person in feedback 3 was
saying about the words looking old fashioned and how I
should change the colour. When people saw my video
they did not see the final end product as I was In the
middle of doing the lettering and hadn’t yet applied the
same effects onto them all and must admit it looked
fairly rough around the edges however in my end
product I think I made more aesthetically pleasing.
Something I didn’t agree with was what the person in
feedback 2 was saying about how certain shots in the
night could have been lit up more. I wanted to have dark
visuals to stay in conventions of my genre and think it
worked nicely in my video however I do agree somewhat
with was they are saying as some shots drifted in and out
