Vicky created marketing materials for a film project including character posters, a billboard, and group poster. Through research on similar products and audience surveys, she aimed to understand audience preferences. Peer feedback praised the detailed drawings and cohesive theme across posters. Areas for improvement included making the release text on posters bolder and straightening a color on the billboard. Vicky agreed the release text could be harder to read and would address that and the billboard issue if redoing the project.
3. Research
For my research, I looked at products which were similar to what I was
hoping to create for my project. I focused on character posters, as this
is what I intended to create. I discussed what each poster featured and
the affect this may have on its audience. I feel this was affective to my
final product as I was able to see what was typical of the type of
product I intended to make and apply this to my ideas and planning of
my product.
I also created a survey and interviewed individuals within my target
audience which helped me to understand what is most appealing to
my audience and most interacted with. It also allowed me to explore in
detail how changing my product to suit its audience would benefit my
production.
I feel I could have improved my research by looking at other existing
products from each film, which will have given me a bigger idea of
how films of the style I was aiming for are represented to its audience,
which could have potentially widened my skills. I could have also asked
more in-depth questions on my interviews which would have allowed
me to have even further knowledge on what the audience would want
to get from my production.
4. Planning
When planning my FMP, I planned my layout, intended colour scheme,
potential fonts, how I intended to sketch my characters and the overall
theme of my project. I also created a health and safety plan,
production schedule, contingency plan and equipment list. This helped
me to structure my production, as I had looked into potential ideas for
how I could create my product which helped give me a clearer idea of
what it would look like complete.
Planning out how I was going to sketch my characters was particularly
useful, as it gave me experience of drawing using procreate for the first
time and time to practice techniques for my final product. If I was to go
back on to my planning I would have added more detail to the process
of designing the characters, as a more detailed description may have
allowed me to add more in-depth detail to my final product.
During production, I found the font and brush research useful, as it was
easy to look at what I had already found on procreate/online and test
these out on my final product, without having to spend ages finding
the right brush and font.
5. Time Management
Overall I feel I stuck to my time pretty well, as I managed to get all
my work completed before I needed it all to be finished which
gave me time to look back on my work and make sure everything
was completed to my best standards.
If I had more time to complete my project, I would have liked to
create more adverts such as social media adverts and potentially
animate my drawings to make the advertising more interactive for
the audience. I would also have liked to add more detail to the
background of the group poster as it may have blended in better
with the other single character posters.
The only issue I have had with time management is creating
products were not always completed to schedule as I found it
easier to create things as they were needed in the project- e.g.
titles for posters were created as I was creating the poster rather
than all at once.
7. Technical Qualities- Character
posters
My character posters all follow a similar layout, so it is fairly
simple to read and recognize by its audience. The character
holds the main focus of attention, as this allows the audience to
focus their main attention to the characters that they will see in
the cinema, and be able to visually recognize the main part of
the film. This is similar in the Snoopy poster as the text,
characters and logo are all placed roughly the same, which
makes them easy to remember and look at as they are not over
complicated.
I tried to keep the text on each poster unique to the character,
by using different fonts and textures for the name titles as I felt
this made each piece visually unique to the character. This is
different to the Snoopy posters, as they use the same font for
each poster, and is always bold, whereas mine varies per
character.
9. Technical Qualities- Billboard
For my billboard, I chose to position the characters in a line, so
they were clearly represented to the audience, and they can
clearly see them without having to closely look to admire each
character, this I similar on the ‘My Little Pony’ billboard as all
the characters are in a line, which makes them easily visible to
the audience.
My text on the billboard is positioned both at the top and
bottom of the billboard, as I felt this would immediately show
the audience the logo, as it is above the characters, which may
help them to remember the film along with the characters
being portrayed in a line. I have the ‘in cinemas..’ at the
bottom, as I felt this is less important than the other features
on the billboard. This is different to the My Little Pony billboard
as that has all of the text together in one area and it is not
separated.
11. Technical Qualities- Group
character poster
For my group poster, I decided to group the characters
together so they would easily stand out to the audience and
would be simply presents, without over complicating the
poster. This is slightly different in the ‘Scoob’ poster, as the
characters are not facing the audience and are in a line
rather than as a group.
I chose to position my logo at the top of the poster, as I
wanted it to be one of the first things the audience saw on
the poster, and the ‘in cinemas..’ to be the last thing that the
audience saw, as I feel the logo is the most important part
of the marketing. This is not the case in the ‘Scoob’ poster,
as the logo is positioned at the bottom of the poster,
underneath the characters.
12. Audience Appeal
Overall, I feel my project appeals well to its audience as it is
brightly coloured and structured based on how my target
audience would view the production. For example I have
positioned the logo at the top of all my products, which I feel
appeals to the audience well as they are able to immediately
see what the film is called, then the characters of the film. The
consistency of this is appealing as all of the products are the
same and therefore easy to read.
I think the use of bright colours also makes my product
appealing to its audience as it is easily visible and aesthetically
pleasing. I established that bright colours attract an audience to
marketing when I did my research so based on this I selected
my colours to both fit with the characters and appeal to my
audience.
14. Feedback 1
What did you like about the product?
They are well details and have obviously had a lot of time and
effort put into them.
The colours are nice and bright and clearly stand out to the
audience.
The characters are unusual and I would not have necessarily put
them together which makes the product unique.
The characters are detailed and creative
What improvements could have been made to the product?
The “in cinemas..” doesn’t show up very well on all of the posters,
could benefit from being a different colour or made bolder so it
will stand out more- particularly on Harley Quinn and Joker
15. Feedback 2
What did you like about the product?
Each poster sticks to a well-struck theme, which is a character
poster with a line and a colour scheme that suits them.
The brick type backgrounds suit the style that has been chosen
for the project and the posters all hit a crescendo with a group
character poster and billboard.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
The orange on the billboard cover doesn’t quite line up
straight like the others do, it could maybe have benefitted from
being straightened up a little bit.
16. Feedback 3
What did you like about the product?
Characters are all unique and well detailed
The caged type texture fits well with the theme of the posters
What improvements could have been made to the product?
Improve the fonts at the bottom as some can be difficult to
read
17. Peer Feedback Summary
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree that my drawings are well detailed and had a great
deal of time spent on them
I agree that my posters stick to a well struck theme and are
all linked together
I like the bright colours as I feel it fits well with the style of my
marketing campaign
The “in cinemas…” text is slightly faint and could do with
improvement.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I disagree that the quote fonts are hard to read, as when I
was designing my posters I made sure I chose fonts that
stood out on the poster
18. Peer Feedback Summary
If I was to go back and change my product, I would change
the “in cinemas…” font to be bolder and easier to read, as
this would make my marketing more effective to the
audience, and make the date more recognizable, as it would
be easier to read.
I would also go back to my billboard and straighten up the
orange colour, as it is slightly out of place after being
blended with the other colours
