3. Research
• My research including collecting different videos and then viewing the
positives and negatives of each. The videos I used were cocoon by
Catfish and the Bottlemen, Why do you only call me when your high by
Arctic Monkeys and Pompeii by Bastille. This was a good method as it
allowed me to see what techniques and effects worked in different types
of video. This allowed me to take a step back and view what kind of
directing techniques and shots I could try include and interpret form the
videos researched. It also allowed me to see what features did not work.
Overall, helping me create the best possible video I can make.
• To improve my research, I would have researched more videos. This
would have allowed me to have collect a wider range of knowledge
therefore allowing me to pick up more techniques from different
directing styles. As well as that, I would have researched different genres
of video. This would allow me to see a different range of video meaning I
could have used skills from different genres and adapt them to my video.
4. Planning
• My planning included creating experiments. This included trying out
different techniques to see what worked and what didn’t. I created two
different experiments and then analysed them afterwards. This was
beneficial as it allowed me improve my camera skills and also see what
features work well and which don’t. This allows me to save time when
creating my final video as I wont have t pay around with different shots
as I will already know what works effectively. It also allowed me to see
what effects and techniques worked in post production again, saving me
time as I knew exactly what filters and editing changes I would include in
my final video.
• My planning could have been improved by completing even more
experiments. This would save me even more time in my final project and
also allow me to perhaps collect new skills and figure out new directing
techniques.
5. Time Management
• My time management was good a completed all of my work in the set
time. I also allowed just enough time to create my video to a good
standard and collect all the shots I needed. I also had enough time to
finish all the written work needed for this project
• To improve, I would have left more time for my video as although I had
enough, I would have preferred a bit more to create the best possible
video could make. If I had more time, I could have taken multiple
different shots for every scene. This would lead to every shot being
perfect.
6. Technical Qualities - camera
I have chose to compare my
video with the Why do you only
call me when you high music
video by Arctic Monkeys. The
similarities between both videos
are that we both include a large
number of close shots. This is
used to focus on the main
character and clearly show that
characters emotion and actions.
The why do you only call me
when your high has many close
shots of Alex Turner as the song
wants to portray how he is
missing his ex-girlfriend and
concentrate on the bad state he
has go himself into whereas my
music videos concentrates on the
man and girl to show the
unhealthy relationship they have.
The differences between the
two videos is that I always
include a number of medium
and longer shots whereas the
why do you only call me when
your high music video only
mainly consists of close shots. I
had to include different shots
to display all the characters
involved and also the location
of the videos. This was to
convey the negative and
de[pressing tone of the song.
Whereas, the Why do you only
call me when your high video
only has to only concentre on
turner as the video’s tone is
conveyed by his emotions and
actions.
7. Technical Qualities – editing/post
The similarities between my
music videos editing and
the Why do you only call
me when your high music
videos editing is that we
both used quite depressing
and negative colour
schemes. This was to show
how the message conveyed
in the video wasn’t a very
positive one. The theme
also pushes the depressed
tone further than if it was
without the effect.
The Why do you only call
me when your high videos
includes a few post editing
changes for example,
blurriness. In the video,
this was used to display
the mess Tuner had got
himself into to. In my
video, I didn't need to add
many post production
changes to the shots. This
was because the tone of
my video was conveyed
well with the shots I
collected and the acting in
the video. For example,
blurriness or sharpness
was not really needed.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
My music video looks good and professional. The shots I collected worked with the
theme of the song as it portrayed the message very clearly. My video was creative as I
included a number of different shots and all the ideas I included were my own. The fact
that I followed the message of the song in the video shows how creative I had to be for
this project. I liked a few of my close shots as they clearly showed the characters
emotion and worked well in the video. Some of my walking shots also looked very crisp
and fitted in perfectly with my video.
To improve my music video, I would have retaken some of my shots as some weren’t as
good as they could have been. All of my shots fitted the theme however, others fitted it
better. As well as that, some of the shots were a bit shaky meaning they didn’t look as
professional as others. Some of the shots collected were also a bit dark therefore making
it hard to see. Next time, I would make sure most of my shots are filmed in daylight to
make sure my video is the best it can be.
9. Audience Appeal
My target audience was the younger generation. I appealed to this specific
audience by portraying h message of the song on screen. This appeals to them as
a lot of the shots are very relatable to the younger generation as it is common
for girls to be mistreated. The mistreatment of woman happens in every
generation however, is more common in the younger generation.
The music video will also appeal to the younger generation as the video is quite
dark and edgy therefore matching many teenagers moods. The actors in my
video are all in the younger generation. This appeals to my target audience as all
the younger generation like being with people a similar age to them therefore,
they will enjoy watching other people around their age as they may connect to
them.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
The product was filmed well and the editing was as good as It could have
been. The video also portrayed the message of the song as planned and
some of the ideas included were very good.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
To improve, you could have filmed all the shots in the same light as this
would have made the video a little bit cleaner. Also, same of the editing
was a bit off but I could see that was because you didn’t collect enough
shots.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
The theme for video was continued throughout. The camera work was
quite good and the editing was good enough. The effect you added fitted
the theme and I liked bow the message was conveyed through the whole
video.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
I think your product could be improved if your performers didn't’t
smile in parts of your video. Also think you could of improved if you
added more shots.
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
I like how the video fit with the lyrics. The colour change and effects in the
video were good. The video is good as it follows the pace of the song well,
as the pace of the song increases so does the pace of the video.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
To improve, you should include more variation of shots. Also, add more
colour variation.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with many of the positives. For example, I agree with the idea that
the editing was the best it could be. I also agree with the way I portrayed
the message of the song in my video as it worked exactly as planned. I
agree with the idea that my video also maintained the same theme
throughout. This is exactly what I wanted. However, I agree with some of
the criticism too. For example, I agree that I should have filmed in similar
light as this did effect my video significantly.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I disagree with some of the criticism. For example, the fact that I didn’t
include a variation of shots. I did include varied shots however, had to
include more close and medium shots as this fit the them of my video.
15. Action Plan for future development
From this project, I have learnt how to work with different lighting
better. This is because I had to film in a majority of different lighting.
From this, I now know what lightings work with the camera and which
don’t work effectively.
I have also used many different effects and filters when in post
production. From this, I have learnt which work effectively with
different lighting and different shots. This will help me in future
projects as I will not have to experiment with different effects, I will
know exactly what to use for the shots I have collected.
