The Theme Of Conflict In The Shunned House
The Shunned House
Discuss Lovecraft s description of the house over the course of the story. Be sure to include details
from the beginning middle and end of the story.
Lovecraft describes the house as though it looked gloomy and torn down.
..the shunned house was vacant, with barren, gnarled, and terrible old trees, long, queerly pale grass,
and nightmarishly misshapen weeds.. ..The small paned windows were largely broken, and a nameless
air of desolation hung round the precarious panelling, shaky interior shutters, peeling wall paper,
falling plaster, rickety staircases, and such fragments of battered furniture as still remained..
(Lovecraft V.8)
Defend whether the narrator is a reliable narrator or not.
The narrator in The Shunned House, can fit in the unreliable category. As the story continues, the
narrator admits to lying to other characters, and presents a rather unreal story. The narrator says,
..Later I told Harris only through sheer necessity, and because he had heard odd tales from old people
which disposed him ever so little toward belief, (Lovecraft. V. 8.).
Describe the conflict in the story. Be sure to include what type of conflict it is, how it starts, develops
and is resolved.
The conflict in the short story is all of the events that happen in it throughout the short story the house
is said to give off bad vibes. There is a certain scene where the narrator awakens to an ear deafening
scream from his uncle; upon finding his uncle he

Temperature Rate Lab Report
Causal Question: (15 words max.)
What caused the water to rise?
Hypothesis: (30 words max.)
A change in pressure inside the jar caused the water to rise.
Prediction: (30 words max.)
If the pressure in the jar remains atmospheric, then the water level will not rise.
Rational: (100 words max.)
Inside the jar, the flame consumed the oxygen and produced carbon dioxide until it ran out of oxygen
and the flame was extinguished. Since pressure is reliant on volume as seen in the formula p=(NkT)/V,
a change in the volume of molecules in the jar will also cause a change in pressure. If the pressure
inside of the jar becomes negative, it will force water into the jar to balance the pressure gradient.
Methods: (200 words max.)
Trial 1: A dish was filled with approximately 2 cm water and a candle mounted on clay was place in it.
The candle was lit and a jar was placed over top of the candle so that it was resting on the dish. When
the flame went out the water level inside the jar was measured. This process was repeated three times.

Dakota Pipeline Project
The Dakota Access, LLC is a company of Energy Transfer Partners formed to create the Dakota
Access Pipeline Project (DAPL) in attempt to transport crude oil in a safer, more direct, and cost
effective way. The pipeline will stretch 1,172 miles through 50 counties in North Dakota, South
Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois. This $3.7 billion project will be able to transport 479,000 barrels of crude
oil a day which is enough oil to produce 374.3 million gallons of gasoline per day. According to

North Dakota to reach major refining markets in a more direct, cost effective, safer, and

The Pipeline will also reduce the current use of transportation and create more than 8,000 new job

would ruin many of their sacred sites in the reservation. Also, with the pipe running underneath the
Missouri River, there is a chance that the pipe could rupture and contaminate the water and cause
people to develop an illness. The DAPL can not be approved because it will create a multitude of

Nero The Great Empire
The name Nero is one of the most recognizable throughout history, widely regarded as the Great
Leader of the Roman Empire. His reforms impacted on the social, political and religious mechanisms
used in the Roman Empire for centuries to come. Nero consolidated his position within Rome through
many decisions which favored the people, enabling him to establish and maintain himself in the
position as Emperor. Nero has been known as the emperor who ultimately ended the Julio Claudian
dynasty and jeopardized Rome s authority, but through analyzing his work and achievements
throughout his rule, many historians raise the question that Nero in fact shaped the society we live in
currently and his actions in his time of power have had a chain effect throughout ... Show more

Until the year 59 A.D., Nero was described as a generous and reasonable leader. He eliminated capital
punishment, lowered taxes and allowed slaves to bring complaints against their masters (Tacitus, 109
A.C.E.). Nero supported the arts and athletics above gladiator entertainment, and gave aid to other
cities in crisis. Although he was known for his nighttime frolicking, his actions were good natured,
albeit irresponsible and self indulgent. Although Nero was a supportive man and contributed many
assets to his empire, after his mother s death, Nero fell into a hedonic lifestyle that was full of tyranny.
He spent exorbitant amounts of money on artistic pursuits and began public performances as a poet
and lyre player, a significant breach of etiquette for a member of the ruling class (Pamela B, 1990).
Nero s attitude at this time ultimately demonstrated that he was an unstable emperor, and his rain of

The Essential Role of the Federal Reserve
The Federal Reserve was established as the Central bank of the United States in late 1913. Commonly
referred to as the Fed, it is responsible for managing currency, money supply, and interest rates
(Lecture, 10/6). While the bank is given much autonomy over its actions, it is not independent from
the US government in that the legislature is responsible for allowing the Federal Reserve to act freely,
and elected officials appoint central bankers. These are two primary mechanisms for keeping the Fed
in check, insuring that it is acting in the nation s best interest (O, 286). Countries with central banks
that are independent from their governments tend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the onset of the war, the stability of the relationship between Britain, France, and Germany
which the Gold Standard was dependent on crippled (lecture, 10/13). During the interwar period, 1914

floating exchange rate. The interwar period saw a breakdown in international monetary coordination
proving that a floating economy was doomed for failure (FLB 264). Outside of the lack of
international coordination, the Gold Standard had other downfalls leading to its demise. For example,
national governments had no authority to stimulate their country s economies in times of need.
Moreover, the fixed economy limits foreign trade, hurting the country s industries (lecture,

A Clockwork Orange Symbolism In The Great Gatsby
Anthony Burgess 1963 novel A Clockwork Orange, orbits around a extremely dynamic character that
goes by simply, Alex. Alex does have three other droogs that he drags along with him, Pete, Georgie,
and Dim, Dim being really dim (Burgess 3). Burgess brilliant mind drags the reader in by starting the
novel at The Korova Milkbar, which is a mesto, place, where Alex and his droogs drink some milk
with a little surprise of liquor in their beverages. Later they end up leaving the Milkbar, while they are
on their way to a different bar they spot a helpless old man walking home, therefore, they take the
opportunity to beat the innocent old man, ripping the books he was caring to shreds, and stripping him
of his clothing. This was the first of many crimes the fourteen year olds committee. Anthony Burgess
changes the setting of the novel from bars, Alex s house, to meeting new people on the street, to even

A clockwork Orange could also be compared to Her Best Friend by Sarah Mayberry. Alex so called
droogs will always be there for him till the end, but once they realize that he is way too powerful to be
around, they turn in him to the police in order so he could get arrested, and they wouldn t have to
worry about having to deal with somebody that is way too powerful for them. Similarities also happen
in Her Best Friend when Amy Parker, the protagonist, is his love with her best friend s husband. The
normal person will not interfere and let her friend have eternal happiness, but she goes after him and
completely backstabs her best friend leaving them in a battle of who will keep the guy and who would
be victorious in the end. Both novels show just how people will be there for you, they show just how
powerful their friendships are, both novels show that nobody will be there for you in the end.

Introduction The Book of Acts is a literary masterpiece filled with stories of miracles, faith, chronicles
of the growth of Christianity, Holy Spirit encounters, and stories of supernatural conversions. It is one
of the main books of the Bible studied to learn about the power of the Holy Spirit and God s ability to

There has been much discussion surrounding the name change from Saul to Paul beginning in Acts
chapter 13. It is shown throughout the New Testament after Saul s conversion that he called himself
Paul and only used the name Saul when he referred to incidents that occurred prior to his conversion.
Other commentaries attribute the name change to Saul s desire to not share the same name with
wicked King Saul from the Old Testament who persecuted David, Jesus ancestor. Many significant
people in the Bible were referred to by different names such as Jesus disciples Matthew (Levi), Simon
(Peter), Abraham (Abram), Sarah (Sarai), Jacob (Israel). The Bible does not offer a reason why Saul
changed his name to Paul or indicate whether it was inspired by God or not. The timing of the change
of name leads us to believe it was because of his conversion and desire to abandon his old nature and
walk in the calling God placed on his life.
The Damascus Experience The account of Saul s conversion is such an important theme that it is
reported in three different areas of the book (Acts 9:1 19, Acts 22:4 16 and Acts 26:9 19). Even though
these 3 verses differ in the amount of detail they contain, they all focus on different aspects of the
miraculous encounter. Charles

Balloon Sinusitis
Millions of people take medications each day to manage the irritation and inflammation of sinuses, but
undergoing balloon sinus surgery offers a permanent and effective solution. Before treatment, it is
important to understand your condition fully. With this guide, you will understand chronic sinusitis
and learn how surgery can decrease your discomfort to improve your quality of life.
Understanding Chronic Sinusitis
Living with chronic sinusitis can be incredibly painful, since it causes your nasal passages to be
inflamed, swollen, and irritated for 12 or more weeks. The swelling can be so severe, it can cause
redness and discomfort around your eyes, as well.
While uncomfortable, chronic sinusitis also prevents you from breathing properly ... Show more

In most cases, treatment will begin nasal corticosteroids. These nasal sprays reduce irritation, easing
swelling and preventing further discomfort. Nasal irrigation is also effective for alleviating pain and
promoting proper drainage. Irrigating your nasal passages with a saline solution can greatly decrease
your congestion.
Medications are usually successful short term solutions, but treating your chronic sinusitis may require
a more permanent solution. Thankfully, balloon sinus surgery is effective for chronic inflammation of
the sinuses.
During the procedure, the inflamed sinuses are opened up using a balloon to dilate the nasal passage.
Once dilated, a saline solution is sprayed deep into the nasal passage to flush out stubborn mucus. The
sinuses remain open after the procedure, reducing your risk of inflammation in the future.
Medications may be effective for fast relief, but they do not treat your sinusitis long term. Also, most
medications for sinus inflammation have other side effects including drowsiness and nausea. The
balloon surgery is capable of healing chronic sinusitis without side effects or invasive

seductive pleasure and sensation that the bears use to lure people to their side. Further through the

This leads to a bigger picture of how close the Laguna people can connect to nature, so much that they
may never want to go back. In The Eagle Watchers Society, Able reflects on his childhood when he
watched eagles and captured them with his group. This moment is notably important to him because
he sees himself as one of the eagles flying around. He sees a free eagle, roaming with complete
freedom, in which is symbolic to his idea of freedom towards his own life.

Go Set A Watchman, By Harper Lee
Prompt #5 In the book Go Set A Watchman , Dr. Finch said not much more than 5% of the South ever
saw a slave, much less owned one. to Jean Louise. This statement brings the idea of slavery away
from the racist views which are clearly present in characters like Dr. Finch and Grady O Hanlon.
Although the validity of this statement is questionable, the impact slavery had on society in this
country is clear. Slavery impacted many aspects of society, including the people of Maycomb, the
views of the Southern/Northern states, and racial tension in today s society.
The statement made by Dr. Finch was, in fact, inaccurate. When you look at the results of the 1860
census, you see that the overall percent of families owning slaves is only 8% in the United States as a
whole(CivilWar.net). However, in his statement from the book, he specifically said not much more
than 5% of the South ever saw a slave, much less owned one. The keywords in this statement were
South and Saw . Both of these words can be disproved by the 1860 census. If you were to look at the
different states separately, you would see that almost all southern states were at or above 25% when
looking at families who own slaves. This proves that much more than 5% of the south owned slaves.
However, if you were to look at the data as a whole, you would be mislead by thinking this 8% was a
representation of the south. This is most likely what Dr. Finch s error was when saying this. This is
why I do believe that

The Psychological Effects Of The Holocaust
Psychological Effects Psychological effects are associated with the mental health of the suvivors.
Imagine a situation where you are housed with a lion in one room, what will you feel? Would you be
comfortable? That feeling is the exact feeling that the victims of the holocaust were experiencing
during the periods they lived in the camps (Levine 350 360). The mental health of the Holocaust
survivors was indeed complex and varied. Literature about the Holocaust reveals there was shock
upon the arrival in the death camps for the Jews. Their experience is next to the unexplainable. The
only sure thing for them at that particular time was death. The Jews lived in fear, heightened because
they lived like hunted animals. They were, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This caused shock to these survivors, causing many to lose hope. Unable to comprehend the tragedy
or to express their grief or rage, the survivors still had the daunting task ahead of them of rebuilding
their lives against difficult circumstances (Gangi, Talamo and Ferracuti 687 700). These circumstances
included their afore mentioned physical ailments, but now they also faced poor living conditions, and
lack of sufficient clothes and food (that now were being rationed to them). In Europe, apart from the
shared problems of the immigrants, a larger proportion of the survivors had already started to express
negative attitudes and reactions (Gangi, Talamo and Ferracuti 687 700). Many who arrived in both the
United States of America and Europe were provided with financial and material help, however, the
survivors received relatively very little of this aid.
The war was a terrifying and horrifying experience. But the survivors rarely wanted to speak about it.
According to the research, the doctors and the researchers found that the effects and symptoms of
psychological failure were not only exhibited in the survivors, but also in their family members. These
predominant symptoms included: living in guilt for having survived while the others had not; the fear
of undercover police officers; and their inability to work. These conditions ended up creating
symptoms involving

Common Law And Civil Law
There are two main categories of the legal systems which is common law and civil law. There are
around 80 countries which recognize the common law system. The civil law system applies to about
150 countries. The primary importance in a common law country is case law. Civil law countries have
predominate codified statutes. An important factor to international business is the legal system. The
market attractiveness of a country can be affected by differences in legal systems. Business practices
are regulated by the country s law. Policies are defined as well the rights and obligations in business
transactions. The legal framework for business to be conducted is defined by the country s
government. There will be variances in laws country to country. Sound business decisions can be
made by acquiring knowledge about common laws and civil laws of different countries. Contract and
contract law regulate several business transactions. The jurisdiction process of a common law system
is expensive. The common law system has a greater flexibility. Contract disputes are interpreted by
judges in comparison to the civil law system. The property rights of most countries are not enforced

Ecclesiastes One Night Analysis
I stumbled upon this chapter in Ecclesiastes one night and as I read it, it was explaining to me exactly
how I felt that moment when I had opened my bible. I had been in a busy season of life, and at the end
of every day, I was consistently finding myself overwhelmed and stressed, and every night I would
think about how life is always going to be stressful, maybe expressed differently and hidden in
different aspects of life, but nevertheless, stressful. Many times when I find myself stressed, my
perspective is taken off of God and placed on my circumstance, which causes me to not tolerate stress

Should Children Get Paid For Good Grades Essay
A child comes home from school, crying. She holds her report card in shaking hands, and knows what
will happen to her. She got a C on her report card, unlike all of her friends, who got A s. She knows
now that she will be the only girl in her class not to get paid for getting a good mark. This young girl,
with tears in her eyes, knows that she tried her best, but it still wasn t enough to earn her a cash sum.
There are a few reasons why children should not get paid for good grades. First, they lose out on
valuable life lessons. Second, it is hard to provide the money for all of the children that get A s. Third,
it can become a competition and can cause problems amongst friends and family. Finally, children
aren t mentally prepared for handling the stress of money.
First of all, children lose out on valuable life lessons. Paying for a child s good grades will stop the
child from learning about getting achievements for the pride, not for the reward. It can also enforce in
a child the message that the only rewards you want from life is money. We expect students to get good
grades, so why should we be paying them for something expected of them?
We can also be telling kids to find an easy route to get the best rewards, making them lose the life
lesson of working hard to get what you want. Kirabo Jackson, an assistant professor, says By
rewarding people for a GPA, you re actually giving them an impetus to take an easier route through

The Dead Gabriel Conroy Essay
Although reassured about his life status and his future, Gabriel Conroy foresees that his own

Conroy is portrayed as his aunts favorite nephew and is a very intelligent man. Despite his educations

The Image Of Image Processing
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Introduction to broad area of research
Image processing:
Image processing is a methodology to perform some operations on an image, so as to urge an
enhanced image or to extract some helpful data from it. It is treated as an area of signal processing
where both the input and output signals are images. Images are portrayed as two dimensional matrix,
and we are applying already having signal processing strategies to input matrix. Images processing
finds applications in several fields like photography, satellite imaging, medical imaging, and image
compression, just to name a few. Basically Image processing includes the following steps:
Reading the image via image acquisition tools like cameras, caners etc.
Analysing and manipulating the acquired image to have enhanced quality and locate the data of
interest;
Output in which result can be altered image or report that is based on image analysis.
Originally image processing is proposed for space exploration and biomedical field. But later on with
the increase in use of digital images in everybody s lives it considered as powerful tool for arbitrarily

Sherman Alexie s `` Green World ``
Sherman Alexie s Green World recounts his experience with twelve windmills during the Second
Great Depression. An old man acquired a grotesque job on an Indian reservation. His job consisted of
him driving to the windmills and cleaning up the dead birds. When the first snow occurred, he
witnessed quite a sight with twelve distinct bloody circles of dead birds caused by the windmills.
While caught in his gaze at the reservation, an Indian approached him, and he was held at gunpoint.
The Indian shot the windmill with his shotgun, only to be discouraged and walk off (16 21). In
Sherman Alexie s Green World , I would argue that the main intellectual conflict with the old man
beckons the question is the advancement in technology worth the severe impact with the environment
or should society strive for the preservation of the environment. This struggle resonates with Robert
Sapolsky s Super Humanity theme of it is human nature to be unconstrained by nature because society
strived to produce alternative forms of energy to help preserve nature, but society also harmed nature
in the pursuit of protection. While non reusable natural resources diminish, scientists have created
engineering marvels, such as the Hoover Dam and hybrid cars, to preserve what little resources
remain. Windmills are one such creation that utilizes the ever powerful wind to power generators to
supply electricity, and the old man is mesmerized by them: those windmills were rather simple and

Rhetorical Analysis Of Thomas Paine s The Crisis No. 1
Salema: The Crisis No. 1 is a 16 pamphlet series written by Thomas Paine in December of 1776
(Paine 86). It was a rather successful piece that argued for independence from England and described
the difficulties faced by the colonists because of Britain s tyranny. Paine was mostly targeting the
American patriots and trying to influence them to come together and fight for their independence. He
also included his idea of the colonies being free from British rule. Through his strong use of tone and
figurative language, he got the colonists to picture a tyranny free country.
There are many uses of rhetoric in The Crisis No. 1 . Paine uses a plentiful amount of logos in this
essay. He uses it to explain logically that the colonies would thrive if they were free from British rule.
He pairs his use of logos with lots of pathos. He tries to get the American patriots upset with the
British in order for them to be more willing to fight against them. For example, he uses pathos when
telling the story of the Tory tavern keeper who made a so called ignorant statement in front of his
child. The tone he used when speaking about the tavern keeper seemed almost furious! The impact of
his use of tone leaves the reader appalled. Similarly, he also uses pathos when he equates offensive
war to murder; ...I believe, could have induced me to support an offensive war, for I think it murder...
(Paine 90).
In conclusion, The Crisis No. 1 influenced many ideas in the American Revolution,

persecution. One of the main contributive factors to the American Revolution was the Intolerable Acts
(or otherwise known in Great Britian as the Coercive Acts); which included the Boston Port Act, the
Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act.
The Boston Port Act was passed by parliament on March 31, 1774. This Act was designed to punish
the inhabitants of Boston, Massachusetts for the incident that would later become known as the
Boston Tea Party. The British Parliament demanded that the city s residents pay for the nearly $1
million worth (in today s money) of tea dumped in to Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party. This
act closed the port of Boston so tightly that the colonists could not even bring hay in from
Charlestown to give to their starving horses. Only food and firewood were permitted into the port. The
events leading up to this act included the Boston Massacre which occurred on December 16, 1773.
This Act was the first, and the easiest to enforce of

The Abandoned Colony by Karen Ordahl Kupperman
Thesis: The Roanoke colony proved to be an unsuccessful venture in the New World for England,
since leaders of the expedition held the viewpoint that privateering would prove to be the most
profitable aspect of founding the new settlements in the West. However future, still unsuccessful
attempts to make a permanent colony at Roanoke, helped England understand how to build a
prosperous one; and it became a building block for establishing future colonies for England and
helped shape the ideas that would help launch their empire.
Summary: This book starts well before Roanoke was founded. It detailed how, at the time, England
was not a superpower. Spain and France were the most dominant of the European countries, but

They had a strange relationship, since many of the colonists respected the Indian s way of life and
were amazed by how they lived. Many attributed their strength to the tobacco that they consumed.
Others saw them as savages and wanted to convert them to the European way of life. The colonists
ended up waging war with them and killed some Croatoans. White went back to England to request
supplies, and when he came back, the colony was abandoned, with evidence that they joined the
Croatoans. CRO was written on a tree, a sign that the colonists left to tell him where they had gone.
However, they were to carve a cross over the name if they were forced to vacate, but there was no
such mark. An entrance post also had the word Croatoan carved into it, also without any crosses. Big
items like weapons were left behind, but all smaller supplies were gone. The book uses Professor
David Quinn s theory to explain what happened. The bulk of the colony moved to the Chesapeake Bay
and lived in peace while the rest stayed behind to guard the heavier equipment. However, the Spanish
threat and Indian hostility forced them to leave. They were the ones who left the notes. Rumors
continued to spin when Indians told stories to the people of Jamestown in the Chesapeake Bay about
whites living with the Indians. Unfortunately, White, Ralegh, and everyone else searching for the
colony never found them. Even after hearing of why Roanoke failed,

Mermaid Research Papers
Mermaids are legends that have been among us for years; moreover, to understand the legends, one
must look at their history, their mystical powers and their distinct descriptions. Mermaids, Mermen,
and Merbabys are making more of an appearance in our waters than they ever have. These mystical
creatures are swimming back into our world. Mermaids originated from aquatic ape s years ago when
dinosaurs still roamed our earth. As Tim Chaffey stated, Our supposed ape like ancestors started living
near the oceans, and the narrator informs viewers that this is where our advanced intelligence began to
develop thanks to the brain building nutrients like iodine and fatty acids so abundant in the shellfish

Mermaids have multiple human bodily functions and multiple fish bodily functions to support their
bodies and keep their have fish and have human bodies healthy and running. As Irene Ziegler has
stated, When a real mermaid is underwater, that third eyelid closes over her eyes like a window shade
pulled from the side of the sash. The mermaids third eyelid serves to let the mermaids keep their sight
while living beneath water for most of their lives. Without their third eyelid, Mermaid s eyes could
potentially dry out and they would be blinded for over 50% of their lives. These mystical creatures
also have a tail covered in aquatic fish scales. These scales that surround the mermaids tail help
protect it from predatory attacks and can also to show the origin of that specific mermaid. Inside the
top human half of a mermaid is an aquatic respiratory system. Without these aquatic respiratory
system mermaids wouldn t be able to breath underwater or stay underwater for long periods of time.
Basically, the mermaid would be a human with a fish tale. Mermaids also have a heart, lungs, and all
other anatomy that a human has, but their body can survive the intake of great amounts of water.
Unlike humans, mermaids use their outrageous bodily abilities to thoroughly embrace life. The third
eyelid that helps them see underwater and prevents eye dryness, fish scales that prevents injuries from
predatory attacks, and an aquatic respiratory system to allow the animal to live and breathe
underwater, all work together to allow the mermaid to create a life strictly under ground

Hugo Bedau s Argue About The Death Penalty
Should we execute murders? That is the debate that we have been struggling with when talk about the
death penalty. A famous philosophy professor by the name of Hugo Adam Bedau has a distinct
argument on this topic that he explains in his paper, How to Argue About the Death Penalty. He
opposed the death penalty on solely moral principles and excludes the augments he believes are
strictly factual. I will show that Bedau s case against the death penalty fails because his facts he
excludes are morally sound arguments.
Hugo Bedau argues that a society is not required to invoke the death penalty for murder unless one
accepts lex talionis that is his first premise and follows it by stating since it is not completely accepted,

the rights away from their victims. The victims do not get a say in the final outcome. They believe that
is okay to take the rights away from someone, so they must be okay with the idea of their right being
compromised as well because they believe in it. You cannot act on something that you cannot be okay
with it happening to yourself in a similar situation. So if murders are willing to compromise the rights
of another human being, then they give up their own

How Does Ishmael Beah Rehabilitated
I have been rehabilitated now, so don t be afraid of me. I am not a soldier anymore; I am a child (Beah
199). Ishmael Beah had a long road to rehabilitate but he was able to rehabilitate because he had vital
forces shaping him. In Ishmael Beah s memoir, a long way gone, Ishmael was a child soldier in Sierra
Leone. He wrote a memoir sharing his experiences of being a child soldier and of him rehabilitation.
During 1991 to 2002 there was a vicious civil war going on in the western African country of Sierra
Leone between the RUF rebels and the government forces. Ishmael Beah was a young 10 year old boy
who lived in a small village, he liked rap music and dancing hip hop with his friends. Ishmael was
never affected by the war until one day when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Ishmael was taken from the front lines of the civil war he was takin to UNICEF s Benin Home
where he was to be rehabilitated. The Benin Home was a place specifically designed to rehabilitate
former child soldiers like Ishmael. The home and its counselors used many techniques for
rehabilitating the kids. In an article about rehabilitation programs in Africa the author states, The
trauma counseling training workshop, which can range from a few days to several weeks, typically
offers participants a combination of lectures, discussions, role plays... game sports and expressive
therapy techniques, and other forms of active methods of treating war trauma can be introduced
(Dridi). One of the counselors at the Benin Home, Esther, used expressive therapy to treat Ishmael s
war trauma. Esther gave Ishmael a rap cassette as a gift and Ishmael said, When I unwrapped it, I
jumped and hugged her (Beah 154). Esther gave this gift because before the war Ishmael and his
friend used to perform rap songs together, Esther knew that giving this gift to Ishmael would help him
reconnect with his past as a normal child. Esther was constantly caring about Ishmael and he was
starting to do the same, I had become very fond of Esther, but I refused to show it... Whenever she
left, though, I would watch he go (Beah 168). Ishmael now cares about people, which is a big step for
a person who used to viciously kill people to start caring about someone. All in all, Esther has helped
turn a vicious child soldier into a normal kid that is capable living life with happiness and caring about

Un Nuevo Mundo As I placed the car into park, turned the key off and stepped into the crisp cold

my heart beating faster. With a quick turn of the ice cold door knob, I found myself standing in a

knew. For the first time in my life I was the minority in my small home town of Winamac, Indiana.

Judicial Branch
The Federal system of government in the United States was built on some of the ideas of
Enlightenment thinkers. The government consists of the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branch.
Each branch has different but equal responsibilities in governing the citizens of the United States.
Although all of the branches of the government have a hand in the passing and regulating of new laws,
in different situations one branch may have more influence on the passing of a specific law than the
others. In the case of the passing of the law that legalized same sex marriage, the Judicial branch had
the most influence because once a law is either declared constitutional or unconstitutional by the
courts in the judicial branch their decision becomes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Texas Attorney General, Luther Strange, states that the U.S. Supreme Court s ruling is now the
law of the land. Short of the passage of a constitutional amendment protecting marriage as between
one man and one woman, the U.S. Supreme Court has the final say. This shows whatever the verdict
of the Judicial branch is, the verdict needs to be followed as it is now the ruling in America. The
Governor of Ohio also stated that I ve said all along that when the Court makes a decision, we abide
by the law of the land, And they made their determination and just move on. It doesn t mean I m not
disappointed, I am, but the decision has been made. Although the governor of Ohio disagrees with the
passing of the law, he accepts the law , as the law was passed through the judicial branch therefore is
now the ruling of the land. This is ultimately shows that the Judicial branch has had the most influence
in the passing of the law that legalized same sex

Analysis Of The Sweet Hereafter By Mitchelll Stephens
The Man with a Mission, Mitchell Stephens Sometimes there is a situation that one is dragged in to,
such as some type of accident. For example, Mitchell Stephens is one of the narrators in The Sweet
Hereafter by Russell Banks. In his side of the story, he is a lawyer from New York who heard about a
bus accident in Sam Dent where ten children died in a bus crash. Mitchell is also the one lawyer
representing Risa Walker and her husband in a negligence suit that financially compensated them for
the loss of their son Sean. Mitchell is not only just a lawyer like many others but also had more
experience. He sympathizes with the parents who lost their children in the accident because like these
parents who lost their children he also has a daughter Zoe, who is he can consider dead due to her drug
problem. To this reason, Mitchell Stephen has the most to gain by telling his tale to the reader because
he seeks to relieve himself from his grief and to help future children riding to school who do not have
to come to the same fate as others in the accident. One reason why Mitchell is trying to gain
something by telling his tale is that he trying to help the people who lost their children in the accident.
Mitchell might a lawyer but he did not come to San Dent just because there was a good case like the
bus accident and he it was good pay, no, not Mitchell, he even said it himself that he did not come for
the money as Mitchell said people immediately assume we re greedy, that it s money we re after,
people call us ambulance chasers and so on, like we re the proctologists of the profession, and, yes,
there is lots of those ((Banks 90). The reason he came to San Dent was that he was angry because he
knows this was not just an accident as he Mitchell said I knew at once that it wasn t an accident at all.
There are no accidents. (Banks 91). Mitchell wanted to help the people from San Dent by making
them as angry as he was. To forget about their grief and Point their anger to the one who is the culprit.
Other reason to why Mitchell is the one narrator in The Sweet Hereafter that is trying to gain
something by telling his tale is because of him a man on a mission. Like many other lawyers heard
about the accident

Complications Of Government Corruption
Introduction: If we read the News today, we could see that the government all over the world is
corrupt. According to US Legal, government corruption is when government leaders abuse their
political power to extract and accumulate for private enrichment (US Legal, Inc.)[1]. Technically, this
is a bad thing because when government leaders use their power for their benefit, it does not
necessarily mean that it is beneficial to the public and the society. To prove or disprove this argument,
I decided to run an econometric analysis to see whether government corruption hinders or helps
economic development. Method: There were three datasets I used for this paper. The first and the main
dataset was the dataset that contained the data on government corruption, which came from the
Worldwide Governance Indicators excel file posted on World Bank. From this dataset, I pulled out one
important variable called Corruption, which is a measure of the government performance. It ranges
from 2.5 (bad government performance/corrupted) to 2.5(good government performance/not
corrupted). We need to be careful when interpreting this variable because even though this is a
corruption measure, higher positive value actually means the government is doing better and less
corrupted. The second dataset I used was Penn World Table version 9.0[3]. From this dataset, I pulled
out the variables: average hours worked (avh), human capital index, based on years of schooling and
returns to education

Mormon Stereotypes
Mormonism, the largest church to originate on American soil is not without its own burdens to bear.
As one of the younger religions, one that strayed from the foundations of the other already established
religions in the United States, it is often viewed with negativity and mockery. Modern day social
media, television, news articles and movies often exploit Mormon beliefs. They twist and exaggerated
certain facets of the Mormon way of life. This framing of their belief system by the media leads the
public opinion toward viewing this representation as a true depiction of the Mormons. Some of the
more extreme behaviors exhibited by members that have separated from the main group are used
against the entire faith by the media, so in turn this extremist view has become a Mormon stereotype.
History of Mormonism The Mormon faith dates back to the year 1830 when Joseph Smith, the
founder along with 5 other men gathered together to form what they initially called The Church of
Christ. This was later changed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Moving to Palmyra,
New York in 1816 with his parents and seven siblings, Joseph Smith and his family found themselves
confused and troubled by the opposing churches in the area. His family tried to associate themselves
with the Presbyterian Church for a time. Then his father shifted his interest to Methodism, but none of
the churches suited their needs. At the age of 14 Joseph found himself praying ... Show more content

us is a son or daughter of our Father in Heaven, who loves all of His children.

Essay On The Destructors
The Destructors is a short story written by Graham Greene that takes place in 1954. This story is set in
England after World War II, and focuses on a group of boys known as the Wormsley Common gang.
They are a group of lower class boys who spend their days pulling off petty crimes. It is when a
newcomer, Trevor, arrives that their most elaborate plan forms. Trevor, who comes to be known as T.,
lived the beginning of his life in the upper class, but due to the loss of his father s job, he now lives in
a lower class neighborhood. He is the one who develops the plan to utterly destroy elderly Mr.
Thomas s house, who lives just across the street from where they all meet. By the end of the story, the
gang is completely successful in their plans, but readers are left wondering what would make T. want
to do this horrible act. Upon closer speculation, it becomes clear that Trevor is motivated to destroy
the house as a way to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Trevor, who comes to be known as T. is described as having a brooding personality (105). When he
first meets the gang and introduces himself, the narrator explains that, There was every reason why T.,
as he was afterwards referred to, should have been an object of mockery there was his name...the fact
that his father, a former architect and present clerk, had come down in the world and that his mother
considered herself better than the neighbors (105). Despite these reasons for mockery, Trevor s odd
quality of danger gets him into the gang with no need for initiations (105). On the day he explains to
the gang his plan for the destruction of Mr. Thomas s house, his eyes are described as as grey and
disturbed as the drab August day (108). At this point in the story, it is becoming clear to see that
Trevor has been greatly affected by the sudden change in his life and wants to act upon the

  • 2. The Theme Of Conflict In The Shunned House The Shunned House Discuss Lovecraft s description of the house over the course of the story. Be sure to include details from the beginning middle and end of the story. Lovecraft describes the house as though it looked gloomy and torn down. ..the shunned house was vacant, with barren, gnarled, and terrible old trees, long, queerly pale grass, and nightmarishly misshapen weeds.. ..The small paned windows were largely broken, and a nameless air of desolation hung round the precarious panelling, shaky interior shutters, peeling wall paper, falling plaster, rickety staircases, and such fragments of battered furniture as still remained.. (Lovecraft V.8) Defend whether the narrator is a reliable narrator or not. The narrator in The Shunned House, can fit in the unreliable category. As the story continues, the narrator admits to lying to other characters, and presents a rather unreal story. The narrator says, ..Later I told Harris only through sheer necessity, and because he had heard odd tales from old people which disposed him ever so little toward belief, (Lovecraft. V. 8.). Describe the conflict in the story. Be sure to include what type of conflict it is, how it starts, develops and is resolved. The conflict in the short story is all of the events that happen in it throughout the short story the house is said to give off bad vibes. • 3. Temperature Rate Lab Report Causal Question: (15 words max.) What caused the water to rise? Hypothesis: (30 words max.) A change in pressure inside the jar caused the water to rise. Prediction: (30 words max.) If the pressure in the jar remains atmospheric, then the water level will not rise. Rational: (100 words max.) Inside the jar, the flame consumed the oxygen and produced carbon dioxide until it ran out of oxygen and the flame was extinguished. Since pressure is reliant on volume as seen in the formula p=(NkT)/V, a change in the volume of molecules in the jar will also cause a change in pressure. If the pressure inside of the jar becomes negative, it will force water into the jar to balance the pressure gradient. Methods: (200 words max.) Trial 1: A dish was filled with approximately 2 cm water and a candle mounted on clay was place in it. The candle was lit and a jar was placed over top of the candle so that it was resting on the dish. When the flame went out the water level inside the jar was measured. His reforms impacted on the social, political and religious mechanisms used in the Roman Empire for centuries to come. Nero consolidated his position within Rome through many decisions which favored the people, enabling him to establish and maintain himself in the position as Emperor. Nero has been known as the emperor who ultimately ended the Julio Claudian dynasty and jeopardized Rome s authority, but through analyzing his work and achievements throughout his rule, many historians raise the question that Nero in fact shaped the society we live in currently and his actions in his time of power have had a chain effect throughout ... Although he was known for his nighttime frolicking, his actions were good natured, albeit irresponsible and self indulgent. Although Nero was a supportive man and contributed many assets to his empire, after his mother s death, Nero fell into a hedonic lifestyle that was full of tyranny. He spent exorbitant amounts of money on artistic pursuits and began public performances as a poet and lyre player, a significant breach of etiquette for a member of the ruling class (Pamela B, 1990). Commonly referred to as the Fed, it is responsible for managing currency, money supply, and interest rates (Lecture, 10/6). While the bank is given much autonomy over its actions, it is not independent from the US government in that the legislature is responsible for allowing the Federal Reserve to act freely, and elected officials appoint central bankers. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There has been much discussion surrounding the name change from Saul to Paul beginning in Acts chapter 13. It is shown throughout the New Testament after Saul s conversion that he called himself Paul and only used the name Saul when he referred to incidents that occurred prior to his conversion. Other commentaries attribute the name change to Saul s desire to not share the same name with wicked King Saul from the Old Testament who persecuted David, Jesus ancestor. Many significant people in the Bible were referred to by different names such as Jesus disciples Matthew (Levi), Simon (Peter), Abraham (Abram), Sarah (Sarai), Jacob (Israel). The Bible does not offer a reason why Saul changed his name to Paul or indicate whether it was inspired by God or not. The timing of the change of name leads us to believe it was because of his conversion and desire to abandon his old nature and walk in the calling God placed on his life. The Damascus Experience The account of Saul s conversion is such an important theme that it is reported in three different areas of the book (Acts 9:1 19, Acts 22:4 16 and Acts 26:9 19). Even though these 3 verses differ in the amount of detail they contain, they all focus on different aspects of the miraculous encounter. Charles

  • 12. Go Set A Watchman, By Harper Lee Prompt #5 In the book Go Set A Watchman , Dr. Finch said not much more than 5% of the South ever saw a slave, much less owned one. to Jean Louise. This statement brings the idea of slavery away from the racist views which are clearly present in characters like Dr. Finch and Grady O Hanlon. Although the validity of this statement is questionable, the impact slavery had on society in this country is clear. Slavery impacted many aspects of society, including the people of Maycomb, the views of the Southern/Northern states, and racial tension in today s society. The statement made by Dr. Finch was, in fact, inaccurate. When you look at the results of the 1860 census, you see that the overall percent of families owning slaves is only 8% in the United States as a whole(CivilWar.net). However, in his statement from the book, he specifically said not much more than 5% of the South ever saw a slave, much less owned one. The keywords in this statement were South and Saw . Both of these words can be disproved by the 1860 census. If you were to look at the different states separately, you would see that almost all southern states were at or above 25% when looking at families who own slaves. This proves that much more than 5% of the south owned slaves. However, if you were to look at the data as a whole, you would be mislead by thinking this 8% was a representation of the south. This is most likely what Dr. Finch s error was when saying this. This is why I do believe that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The mental health of the Holocaust survivors was indeed complex and varied. Literature about the Holocaust reveals there was shock upon the arrival in the death camps for the Jews. These circumstances included their afore mentioned physical ailments, but now they also faced poor living conditions, and lack of sufficient clothes and food (that now were being rationed to them). In Europe, apart from the shared problems of the immigrants, a larger proportion of the survivors had already started to express negative attitudes and reactions (Gangi, Talamo and Ferracuti 687 700). Many who arrived in both the United States of America and Europe were provided with financial and material help, however, the survivors received relatively very little of this aid. The war was a terrifying and horrifying experience. But the survivors rarely wanted to speak about it. She got a C on her report card, unlike all of her friends, who got A s. She knows now that she will be the only girl in her class not to get paid for getting a good mark. This young girl, with tears in her eyes, knows that she tried her best, but it still wasn t enough to earn her a cash sum. There are a few reasons why children should not get paid for good grades. First, they lose out on valuable life lessons. Second, it is hard to provide the money for all of the children that get A s. Third, it can become a competition and can cause problems amongst friends and family. Finally, children aren t mentally prepared for handling the stress of money. First of all, children lose out on valuable life lessons. Paying for a child s good grades will stop the child from learning about getting achievements for the pride, not for the reward. It can also enforce in a child the message that the only rewards you want from life is money. We expect students to get good grades, so why should we be paying them for something expected of them? We can also be telling kids to find an easy route to get the best rewards, making them lose the life lesson of working hard to get what you want. In Sherman Alexie s Green World , I would argue that the main intellectual conflict with the old man beckons the question is the advancement in technology worth the severe impact with the environment or should society strive for the preservation of the environment. This struggle resonates with Robert Sapolsky s Super Humanity theme of it is human nature to be unconstrained by nature because society strived to produce alternative forms of energy to help preserve nature, but society also harmed nature in the pursuit of protection. While non reusable natural resources diminish, scientists have created engineering marvels, such as the Hoover Dam and hybrid cars, to preserve what little resources remain. Windmills are one such creation that utilizes the ever powerful wind to power generators to supply electricity, and the old man is mesmerized by them: those windmills were rather simple and lovely but ... • 22. Rhetorical Analysis Of Thomas Paine s The Crisis No. 1 Salema: The Crisis No. 1 is a 16 pamphlet series written by Thomas Paine in December of 1776 (Paine 86). It was a rather successful piece that argued for independence from England and described the difficulties faced by the colonists because of Britain s tyranny. Paine was mostly targeting the American patriots and trying to influence them to come together and fight for their independence. He also included his idea of the colonies being free from British rule. Through his strong use of tone and figurative language, he got the colonists to picture a tyranny free country. There are many uses of rhetoric in The Crisis No. 1 . Paine uses a plentiful amount of logos in this essay. He uses it to explain logically that the colonies would thrive if they were free from British rule. He pairs his use of logos with lots of pathos. He tries to get the American patriots upset with the British in order for them to be more willing to fight against them. For example, he uses pathos when telling the story of the Tory tavern keeper who made a so called ignorant statement in front of his child. The tone he used when speaking about the tavern keeper seemed almost furious! The impact of his use of tone leaves the reader appalled. Similarly, he also uses pathos when he equates offensive war to murder; ...I believe, could have induced me to support an offensive war, for I think it murder... (Paine 90). In conclusion, The Crisis No. 1 influenced many ideas in the American Revolution, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Contributive Causes Of The American Revolution Without the American Revolution, the United States would not exist. Before the American Revolution, the nation was a collection of 13 British colonies that were united by the British monarchy. During this time it was ruled by British Parliament which was 3500 miles away and a journey by ship that was 27 days long in the ideal situation but could be up to 6 8 weeks. All of the colonies with the exception of Georgia were formed by people trying to escape some form of persecution. One of the main contributive factors to the American Revolution was the Intolerable Acts (or otherwise known in Great Britian as the Coercive Acts); which included the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act. The Boston Port Act was passed by parliament on March 31, 1774. This Act was designed to punish the inhabitants of Boston, Massachusetts for the incident that would later become known as the Boston Tea Party. The British Parliament demanded that the city s residents pay for the nearly $1 million worth (in today s money) of tea dumped in to Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party. This act closed the port of Boston so tightly that the colonists could not even bring hay in from Charlestown to give to their starving horses. Only food and firewood were permitted into the port. The events leading up to this act included the Boston Massacre which occurred on December 16, 1773. This Act was the first, and the easiest to enforce of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Abandoned Colony by Karen Ordahl Kupperman Thesis: The Roanoke colony proved to be an unsuccessful venture in the New World for England, since leaders of the expedition held the viewpoint that privateering would prove to be the most profitable aspect of founding the new settlements in the West. However future, still unsuccessful attempts to make a permanent colony at Roanoke, helped England understand how to build a prosperous one; and it became a building block for establishing future colonies for England and helped shape the ideas that would help launch their empire. They had a strange relationship, since many of the colonists respected the Indian s way of life and were amazed by how they lived. Many attributed their strength to the tobacco that they consumed. Others saw them as savages and wanted to convert them to the European way of life. The colonists ended up waging war with them and killed some Croatoans. White went back to England to request supplies, and when he came back, the colony was abandoned, with evidence that they joined the Croatoans. CRO was written on a tree, a sign that the colonists left to tell him where they had gone. However, they were to carve a cross over the name if they were forced to vacate, but there was no such mark. An entrance post also had the word Croatoan carved into it, also without any crosses. Big items like weapons were left behind, but all smaller supplies were gone. The book uses Professor David Quinn s theory to explain what happened. The bulk of the colony moved to the Chesapeake Bay and lived in peace while the rest stayed behind to guard the heavier equipment. However, the Spanish threat and Indian hostility forced them to leave. They were the ones who left the notes. Rumors continued to spin when Indians told stories to the people of Jamestown in the Chesapeake Bay about whites living with the Indians. A famous philosophy professor by the name of Hugo Adam Bedau has a distinct argument on this topic that he explains in his paper, How to Argue About the Death Penalty. He opposed the death penalty on solely moral principles and excludes the augments he believes are strictly factual. I will show that Bedau s case against the death penalty fails because his facts he excludes are morally sound arguments. • 30. Analysis Of The Sweet Hereafter By Mitchelll Stephens The Man with a Mission, Mitchell Stephens Sometimes there is a situation that one is dragged in to, such as some type of accident. For example, Mitchell Stephens is one of the narrators in The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks. In his side of the story, he is a lawyer from New York who heard about a bus accident in Sam Dent where ten children died in a bus crash. Mitchell is also the one lawyer representing Risa Walker and her husband in a negligence suit that financially compensated them for the loss of their son Sean. Mitchell is not only just a lawyer like many others but also had more experience. He sympathizes with the parents who lost their children in the accident because like these parents who lost their children he also has a daughter Zoe, who is he can consider dead due to her drug problem. To this reason, Mitchell Stephen has the most to gain by telling his tale to the reader because he seeks to relieve himself from his grief and to help future children riding to school who do not have to come to the same fate as others in the accident. One reason why Mitchell is trying to gain something by telling his tale is that he trying to help the people who lost their children in the accident. Mitchell might a lawyer but he did not come to San Dent just because there was a good case like the bus accident and he it was good pay, no, not Mitchell, he even said it himself that he did not come for the money as Mitchell said people immediately assume we re greedy, that it s money we re after, people call us ambulance chasers and so on, like we re the proctologists of the profession, and, yes, there is lots of those ((Banks 90). The reason he came to San Dent was that he was angry because he knows this was not just an accident as he Mitchell said I knew at once that it wasn t an accident at all. There are no accidents. (Banks 91). Mitchell wanted to help the people from San Dent by making them as angry as he was. To forget about their grief and Point their anger to the one who is the culprit. Other reason to why Mitchell is the one narrator in The Sweet Hereafter that is trying to gain something by telling his tale is because of him a man on a mission. • 31. Complications Of Government Corruption Introduction: If we read the News today, we could see that the government all over the world is corrupt. According to US Legal, government corruption is when government leaders abuse their political power to extract and accumulate for private enrichment (US Legal, Inc.)[1]. Technically, this is a bad thing because when government leaders use their power for their benefit, it does not necessarily mean that it is beneficial to the public and the society. To prove or disprove this argument, I decided to run an econometric analysis to see whether government corruption hinders or helps economic development. Method: There were three datasets I used for this paper. The first and the main dataset was the dataset that contained the data on government corruption, which came from the Worldwide Governance Indicators excel file posted on World Bank. From this dataset, I pulled out one important variable called Corruption, which is a measure of the government performance. It ranges from 2.5 (bad government performance/corrupted) to 2.5(good government performance/not corrupted). We need to be careful when interpreting this variable because even though this is a corruption measure, higher positive value actually means the government is doing better and less corrupted. The second dataset I used was Penn World Table version 9.0[3]. From this dataset, I pulled out the variables: average hours worked (avh), human capital index, based on years of schooling and returns to education ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Mormon Stereotypes Mormonism, the largest church to originate on American soil is not without its own burdens to bear. As one of the younger religions, one that strayed from the foundations of the other already established religions in the United States, it is often viewed with negativity and mockery. Modern day social media, television, news articles and movies often exploit Mormon beliefs. They twist and exaggerated certain facets of the Mormon way of life. This framing of their belief system by the media leads the public opinion toward viewing this representation as a true depiction of the Mormons. Some of the more extreme behaviors exhibited by members that have separated from the main group are used against the entire faith by the media, so in turn this extremist view has become a Mormon stereotype. History of Mormonism The Mormon faith dates back to the year 1830 when Joseph Smith, the founder along with 5 other men gathered together to form what they initially called The Church of Christ. This was later changed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Moving to Palmyra, New York in 1816 with his parents and seven siblings, Joseph Smith and his family found themselves confused and troubled by the opposing churches in the area.
