R J Reynolds Case
This case study is based on R.J Reynolds (RJR) 1985 financing of the $4.9 billion acquisition of
Nabisco Brands Inc. To finance the acquisition, RJR proposed the issue of a preferred stock of $1.2
billion with twelve years US domestic notes of the same amount. To analyze the case there are two
major components. First requirement is to examine the financing alternatives available to the company
in order to assess their suitability. Secondly, identify other financing alternatives that may be suitable
for R.J Reynolds. Three financing alternatives are suitable for the company (Hillier, D., Grinblatt, M.,
Titman, S. (2011) They include a five year yen/dollar dual, a five year Euroyen bond, and a five year
Eurodollar bond. The viability of these alternatives will be assessed in the context of maturity
concerns, whether the billion dollar piece have a floating rate or a fixed rate and finally whether the
final dollar piece should be issued in US dollars or other currencies. ... Show more content on

The borrowings increased the RJR debts issued in 1984 bringing an A debt rating, therefore in
financing the remaining $1 billion the below should be put into consideration: Debt vs. Equity: RJR is
a mature company whose average retained earnings for the last three recent years amounted to $4.2
billion. The net equity in 1984 stood at $4.5 billion. Therefore this is a clear indication that the
company is in a position to support additional debt in any of the three financing

Atoms And Covalent Bonds
Covalent bonding starts when atoms are sharing pairs of electrons. Atoms will covalently bond with
other atoms to get more stability, which they get by forming a full electron shell. By sharing their
outer most valence electrons, atoms fill up their outer electron shell and get stability. Nonmetals will
form covalent bonds with other nonmetals in order to gain stability. They also can form anywhere
between one to three covalent bonds with other nonmetals depending on how many valence electrons
they have. Covalent bonds are the strongest type of chemical bond. When two or more atoms have
similar electronegativity, conditions are suitable for covalent bonding. Covalent bonds are the
strongest type of chemical bond. Electronegativity increases toward the right of the periodic table and
decreases down the table. Electronegativity is not an atomic property, but is there when atoms interact
with each other. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Metals and metallic atoms have loose electrons that can be taken away easily. In a molten metal, the
metallic bond is still there, but the ordered structure has been broken. The metallic bond isn t all the
broken until the metal boils. The boiling point is actually a better guide to the strength of the metallic
bond than melting point is. When melting, the bond is loose, not broken.
Ionic bonding is a type of chemical bond formed between two ions with opposite charges. Ionic bonds
are formed between a metal and a non metal. Non metals are stronger than metal and can get electrons
easily from the metal. These ions attract each other and create an ionic bond. Ionic bonds are also
known as electrovalent bonds. Ionic bonds form their bond when opposite charged ions in a chemical
compound have an electrostatic attraction. Even thought Ionic bonds still hold molecules together,
they are weaker than covalent

The Happiest Refugee Book Analysis
To me, this quote, We read to know we re not alone , has two meanings; that is we read to immerse
ourselves in different universes and situations. We connect to other characters or experiences we never
get in our universe. Another meaning is we read to feel the we, the reader, is not alone. For example, if
I say I hate my life , I read and find out that there are other people who have the same problem or in
even worse situation than I am.
I have read two books who are totally different to each other. The first book I read was entitled The
Happiest Refugee by Ahn Do. The second book I read was entitled Skeleton Key , a graphic novel by
Anthony Horowitz.

African Education Vs American Education Essay
Education and the Diversity in The African and American Society They say If you give a man a fish;
he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish; and you feed him for a lifetime. Education in today s society is
very vital to be successful. Although there are many opinions on how education is valued or the access
to such privileges vary. It can be crucial all the same. Both Africa and America have many differences
there are many things they have in common starting with education. Education was not always

Just as the American schooling system mostly education was available to mostly white cultures.
African school were segregated just as well as the American culture in the past. The apartheid was a
system of racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa between 1948 and 1991. South
Africans were broken down into one of four racial groups based on appearance, known ancestry,
socioeconomic status, and cultural lifestyle: Black, White, Colored and Indian. Places of residence and
educational facilities were determined by racial classification. America had dealt with these same
issues in the mid 1800 s Southern Blacks wanted public schools for their children but they did not
demand racially integrated schools. Legal segregation of schools did not come to an end until the U.S.
Supreme Court made the decision after Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.
Women seem to take be more successful in both countries as well. Word Press states: Although
African Americans have made great progress in the past 30 years in their quest for equality, a
significant gender gap in educational achievement remains. Black females have made much greater
progress in academic attainment when compared to black males. Several statistics illustrate this fact.
For example, in 2006 81% of black females graduated high school compared to 72% of black males.
Whereas here in America the averages of male and female university participants were pegged at a 43

The Bible And The Interpretation Of The Bible
Although the interpretation of the Bible is the particular task of the exegetes, it does not belong,
however, as a monopoly, since it involves, in the Church, aspects that go beyond the scientific analysis
of the texts. The Church, in effect, does not consider the Bible simply as a set of historical documents
concerning its origins. She welcomes it as the Word of God that directs her and the whole world, in
the present time.
This conviction of faith has as a consequence the practice of updating and inculturating the biblical
message, as well as the different ways of using the inspired texts, in the liturgy, the Lectio divina , the
pastoral ministry, and the ecumenical movement.
Already in the Bible itself (as we have noted in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Measuring Reaction Rate Using Volume of Gas Produced
Chemistry 12 Formal Report Measuring Reaction Rate using Volume of Gas Produced By John Doe
23th October 2012 Introduction An essential element of chemistry is finding reaction rates. This is
because chemists need to know how long a reaction should take. In addition to needing to know the
rate of a reaction at any point in time to monitor how the reaction is proceeding. Many factors effect
reaction rates, two shown above include temperature and concentration. Concentration affects the rate
of reactions because the more concentrated a solution the more likely collisions between particles will
be. This is simply because there are more particles present to collide with each other. When the
temperature is higher, particles will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In next reaction which took place at a temperature 10Ëš higher than that had a rate of 39.5 mL/minute.
Next was the reaction which took place at 10Ëš below room temperature which resulted in a rate of 26.8
mL/minute. In the reaction that 20 mL of distilled water was added to the bleach solution and the
temperature was kept constant, the reaction rate dropped to 16.2 mL/minute. Finally the slowest
reaction occurred when 60 mL of distilled water was added to the bleach causing a rate of 10.8
mL/minute. The rate value changes as the temperature is changed. When the temperature increases by
10Ëš, the rate of the reaction increases by a factor of 0.12 (12%). This is again changed when the
temperature is changed to 10Ëš below room temperature. This results in a rate of production of oxygen,
which is decreased by a factor of 0.25 (25%). When the concentrations were changed so did the rate of
reaction. When the concentration was changed to 0.265M the rate of reaction dropped by a factor of
0.5 (50%) below the control value. Furthermore when 60mL of water was added to the bleach
dropping the concentration too 0.132M the rate dropped by a factor of 0.7 (70%). Bleach should never
be mixed with any acid based cleaners because it results in the formation of toxic Cl gas. If bleach is
mixed with an acid based cleaner in a small room it will result in a toxic build up of chlorine gas,
which can be fatal to anyone spending

The United States Supreme Court Decisions
As a student or professional in the criminal justice field, one will undoubtedly cross paths with the
Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The right of the people to be secure in their
persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated,
and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and
particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. (U.S. Const.
amend. IV) The source of many United States Supreme Court decisions, these often debated words
seek to protect citizens against abuses of power by the government. Although the intent of these few
words are clear, the debate stems from the attempts to interpret the intent of the framers. Three major
interpretations have been developed from the debates surrounding the Fourth Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution. These interpretations are the warrant approach, the reasonableness approach and the
special needs approach. We will begin by discussing the warrant approach which is also the traditional
approach to interpret the Fourth Amendment. The warrant approach focused on limiting valid searches
to those done with a warrant based on probable cause (Bacigal, 1979). This meant that in order for a
search to be valid under the Fourth Amendment there had to be judicial approval in advance of the
search except when justified by absolute necessity (Stelzner, 1979). Proponents of this approach

Boxing Should Not be Banned Essay
Boxing Should Not be Banned In recent years, there have been many campaigns to try and have
boxing banned. Those in favour of banning boxing argue that it is dangerous, potentially life
threatening and generally unsafe. It can also be argued that it is immoral to give someone money for
fighting with someone else. Those who are against boxing being banned argue that it is no more
dangerous than other sports. In this essay, I will critically examine each of these arguments and
demonstrate to the reader that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All boxers obviously believe that the benefits of the ancient sport outweigh its negative side. This is
shown in their enthusiasm to take potentially high risks in order to gain the rewards of winning. Like
all sports, there is an element of danger involved however we have the freedom to decide whether or
not to take part in it.
One of the main arguments for boxing being banned is that serious medical injury can result from
boxing due to continuous blows to the head. In boxing when the head is knocked sideways, the brain
swirls in the skull, its layers shearing and sliding off one another, tearing vital nerve fibres . Statistics
show that 15 20% of boxers ending a professional career develop the punch drunk syndrome . This
syndrome consists of the brain weakening, loss of memory, slowed speech and difficulty in walking.
Also boxing can effect the time of death. A professional boxer dies around 10 15 years earlier than the
average life expectancy. People argue that a sport, which can result in players suffering from brain
damage and cerebral ischemia ( a disruption of blood supply to an area of the brain ) should be banned
straight away because of the life threatening risks involved
However, Dr Nigel Warburton, a lecturer in philosophy for the Open University, claims that the

Summary of research plan
Development of drugs with high potency and inhibitory activity against specific activating mutation,
while showing significantly less activity against wild type mutations, made testing specific sensitizing
mutation necessary. (1) (EGFR) T790M mutation a successful example of a biomarker for non small
cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment with Osimertinib that gained a wide acceptance in clinical
practice in Europe and US (), One question that needs to be asked, however, is whether testing for
similar mutations in different cancer will be of clinical value. an unknown subpopulation of patients
with CRC will have an activating EGFR mutation, such as L858R, which is thought to activate the
receptor constitutively, regardless of ligand status promoting cellular proliferation and growth. in
patients with colorectal cancer, Targeting activated EGFR, hypothetically, will lead to growth
inhibition of cancer cell dependent on the oncogenic drive of sensitising EGFR mutation. This project
aims to investigate the role of EGFR (L858R/+/+) as a biomarker for AZD 9291 (Osimertinib)
treatment, using SW48 cell line with a wild type mutation of EGFR and Heterozygous knockin of
EGFR activating mutation (L858R/+/+), to investigate the mechanism of resistances if cells developed
resistance and to test the overlap between Osimertinib and AZD5363, palbocidib and selumetinib.
This work should improve treatment outcome for patients with CRC with EGFR sensitising mutation

How Does Manet Present A Nude Woman In The Luncheon On The...
Edouard Manet s The Luncheon on the Grass was a very controversial piece of it times as it depicted a
nude female with fully clothed men. In understanding this controversy surrounding The Luncheon on
the Grass, it is important to remember that in the nineteenth century (19th century) in which Manet
revealed this painting it was at a time in which nude female images was viewed as objects of desire,
voyeuristic, and subtle. With traditionally, the display of the female body was seen as more mythical
such as goddess like. For the typical male viewer, this provided comfort, freedom, and fantasy. Manet
changed all this with his painting of The Luncheon on the Grass. First, Manet transformed the goddess
like image of the nude female by painting the female as a modern Parisian woman with curves and
less flattering features such as more body fat. Manet also has the female figure at the focal point of the
painting gazing as if looking straight at the audience. The gaze from the woman figure gives the
illusion that the woman is making eye contact with the viewer. This gaze by the nude female gives her
the appearance that she is strong, bold, and challenging in contrast to the ... Show more content on

The Pros And Cons Of Open Marking
The Correctional framework in the 21st century has advanced from early disciplines which were
unfeeling and convoluted medications of detainees. Prior disciplines were taken a gander at the same
number of structures, for example, lashing which mean detainees were beaten for wrongdoings, at
times to the point of death. Mutilation is the point at which the culprits were physically eviscerated as
a discipline to discourage lawbreakers from carrying out different wrongdoings. Marking was a type
of open showing of disgracing lawbreakers by stamping them. Open mortification of hoodlums was

Female Episodic Memory Research Paper
Introduction
Memory is described as a group of related and interacting processes that enable us to acquire, retain
and retrieve information. Information is first encoded so that it can be retained in memory. It is then
stored where it can be retrieved so that we are consciously attentive to it. Information first enters
sensory memory and if it is attended to, it can be transferred to short term memory (STM) where it is
retained for about six seconds and then to long term memory (LTM). Information can then be
transferred from LTM to STM when needed and stored again. At any stage, memory can be lost if it

Racial Barriers in Grace Paley s Short Story Samuel Essay
Racial Barriers in Grace Paley s Short Story Samuel
It is hard to distinguish the difference between which race is more important. One might ask
themselves if white is superior over colored skin. There have been numerous struggles and much
success in the fight towards equality between the races. Although many large steps have been made,
there are still existing racial barriers. One particular struggle is whether or not people of different races
should interact with each other. Should Caucasian adults interact with young children of color? A
question that becomes especially critical when children are putting themselves in potentially
dangerous situations. This moral debate is portrayed in Grace Paley s short story, Samuel. ... Show

In the short story, Two men and others looked at the four boys jumping and jiggling on the platform
and thought, It must be fun to ride that way (191). Men normally have influence to control dangerous
situations and instead of using this power to persuade the boys to come into a safe place, they allow
the children to continue to endanger their lives. The women on the train became very angry when they
look at the four boys. Most of them brought their brows together hoping the boys would see their
extreme disapproval (191).
In the story, one woman in the subway car saw that three of the boys were Negroes and the fourth was
something else she couldn t tell for sure. She was afraid that they would be fresh and laugh at her and
embarrass her (191). It seems that the women are scared of even confronting the barrier that separates
her from the children. The racial wall is so intimidating to the women that all they could do is sit and
watch the young boys in fear of their safety.
As time passed, the racial begun to slowly deteriorate. Sometimes, motherly instincts will overcome
anything, and in this case it is to persuade the women to stand up to the children. The lady who was
afraid of embarrassment saw the boys jerk forward and backwards and grab the swinging guard
chains...She stood up with determination and went to the door (191). Allowing her maternal

New Technology in the Trucking Industry
Drivers who travel the interstate have shared the road with an 18 wheeler, which incorporates a large
portion of the transportation service industry (also known as the trucking industry), and have
witnessed firsthand new technology working not only to protect the driver but you as well. New
technology is defined as the specific methods, materials, and devices used to solve practical problems.
Research has shown that new technology has been both helpful and harmful in changing the trucking
industry, but was needed. The electronic log, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Computer Use in Early Childhood Education
Computer Use in Early Years of Education
Abstract The importance of the child s development in early years of education has reached the stage
where it becomes critical that learning programs becomes a global issue. Understanding changes and
undertaking practice is fundamental in student learning. The purpose of this article is to increase our
perception on the different effects of using computer technology in early childhood setting. In
answering the question What is the purpose of education? I started at that time from the observation
that man lives in a world of objects which influence him and which he wishes to influence, and so he
must know these objects in their characteristics, their essence and their relation to one ... Show more

According to Yelland (1999), Educators beliefs such as Montessori, Isaacs, Froebel, and Steiner, has
led to early childhood programs that are characterized by their adherence to such traditional principles,
manifested in unstructured environments, informal contexts, and learning through active exploration
and play. Indeed, early pioneers such as Montessori advocated relatively structured learning
opportunities, whereas Froebel s views supported a less formal structure. However, both Froebel and

Women s Rights And Feminist Movements
Although often iconized as a time of industrial and political revolution the 20th Century provided an
equally important platform for social revolution. During this era countless social movements emerged,
notably so the women s rights and feminist movements. Tremendous gains were made for women
throughout the century s span, from suffrage, to equal pay, and the availability of contraceptives. One
of the most complex feminist movements of the 20th century followed the period s most tumultuous
event: World War II. While under occupation by the United States the Japanese feminist movement
flourished and the lives of Japanese women changed dramatically. The feminism of this period, from
the end of the war to the end of occupation, has been studied by numerous historians and is mentioned
in most literature concerning occupation. The leading scholars of occupation feminism have
approached and presented the topic in three distinctly different ways: several focus on cultural
changes, others emphasize the movement s deep historical roots, and some criticize the period as
flawed feminism. The loss of World War II was a catalyst for cultural change within Japan.
Occupation and the subsequent influx of American ideals and culture influenced the changes that
occurred in Japanese women s lives. John Dower, a retired MIT professor of Japanese history, reflects
on these cultural changes in his work Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II .

Lean Manufacturing Is An Approach
Introduction Lean Manufacturing is an approach taken by manufacturing organization to increase
efficiency through optimization and maximize customer value while minimizing waste. Traditionally,
Lean principles were applied to manufacturing industries especially automotive companies. However,
with the success in automotive industry, it no longer limited to automotive sector and can be applied in
other manufacturing sectors as well as services industries (Balle, et al., 2006). The drivers for
implementing Lean in both manufacturing and service sectors are customer demands for better quality
products and services, managerial demands for cost reduction and sustaining in an increasing market
competitiveness. Lean implementation and various success stories has led companies worldwide to
introduce lean in their operations and services but majority of these companies achieved only modest
levels of success (Womack Jones, 2003). It is reported that many organizations are not able to
transform themselves to lean organization and thus at some point of time, lean implementation is
destined to fail (Farris, et al., 2009). Some of the main factors for lean failures are poor
communication, lack of strong leadership, lack of learning, staff resistance to change, and lack of clear
direction (Emiliani Stec, 2005). Researchers have argued that transition to lean environment and
sustaining lean improvements requires cultural change in the organization rather than changing the

The Benefits of a Liberal Arts Education
The strength of a liberal arts education is the strong, varied foundation it provides over a wide
spectrum of subjects. A liberal arts education is aimed at teaching you how to think. It helps you to
develop strength of mind, and an ordered intellect. This broad based education allows students to
create new theories, discoveries, and connections between fields. With such expansive roots, great
innovators can build and expand from what others have learned, instead of wasting effort on
rediscovery of what is already known. With the knowledge of a subject s strengths and capabilities,
and weaknesses and restrictions, students can combine traits of different subjects to formulate new and
more complicated concepts. New colors can only come from mixing those which already exist. The
pigment of a new color depends on the shades and hues of the colors used to create it. Such is true for
education. The resulting ideas are a sterling product of the compatibility of the subjects blended to
create it. What vocational schools have in central focus, they lose in direct focus. Enormous
concentration in one area pigeon holes, severely limiting the range of career opportunities. A liberal
arts education on the other hand, teaches one how to think, and how to apply this to a variety of
subjects. Both aspects have their strengths and their downfalls. However, one can hardly say the
liberal arts is useless and should be tossed aside in the modern day. A better understanding of
education comes

Pluralism in Islam

Introduction
While Islam stresses on the unity of humanity, it also recognizes human diversity and gives valuable
principles to deal with ethnic, racial and religious differences in society. This paper discusses
Religious Pluralism in the light of Quran and Hadith. Islam gives rights to all citizens of Muslim state;
granting them protection and allowing them to co exist in a multi religious society giving birth to the

the way to deal and communicate with the book of people and other religions as well. Book of people

The Battle At Midway During World War II
Abstract
The battle at Midway was a pivotal moment in World War II. The United States Navy was in desperate
need for victory, while the over confident Japanese military force was riding on the tails of previous
success. The U.S. gained intelligence and surprised the unsuspecting Japanese fleet. The battle was
swift and just, with Japan sustaining a significant loss of life. Their loss of artillery, equipment and
supplies proved to be unsurmountable. These losses led to a major shift in momentum towards the
United States. The Japanese confidence level plummeted, in both the soldiers and the public. The U.S.
celebrated the victory and built on that energy. Japan was forced to refocus military plans. Strategic
initiatives changed from the Pacific theater to other, less desirable locations. A desperate focus to
rebuild from the human and material loss was attempted. Carrier defense was strategized. Despite
these refocus attempts; Japan was unable to regain triumph, making the Battle at Midway the most
pivotal event in World War II history. Japan s losses, change in momentum and forced military refocus
proved to be the revolution necessary to provide U.S. the triumph.
The Battle of Midway June 4 7, 1942 recorded the most pivotal battle of World War II, the Battle of
Midway. Prior to this, Japanese military ran almost unchecked throughout the western and central
Pacific Ocean (Black, 2009). The recent defeat at Pearl Harbor wounded the United States

Overbreathing Persuasive Speech Outline
I know what you re probably thinking: you ve been breathing since you were a baby and it s kept you
alive this long so you must be doing something right. Well, not necessarily right, perhaps only
consistently.
The truth is, most people actually breathe in a way that negatively impacts their health. In fact,
improper breathing patterns are associated with sleep disorders, asthma, and rhinitis. How many times
have we been told we must get 8 hours of sleep each night for our health, or we must drink 8 glasses
of water per day for our health? And yet very little information or training is available on how we
should breathe for our health.

The Collective Memory In Cracking India And The...
Memory of a singular event can differ amongst individuals, even those in the same neighborhood or
family. Each individual brings a collective of different experiences, mindsets, identities, etc. to the
table and therefore, perceives events differently. Although a seemingly simple concept, there is a
distinctness of individual memory that does not coincide with the collective memory of a community.
In terms of historical events, a nation s communal memory is not solely rooted in fact but also in the
oral histories of those individuals who lived through the event. There is no one history. Consequently,
there is a discourse between the collective memory of the community and the individual memory.
India s 1947 partition reveals that there are many different histories to the independence of India and
the subsequent creation of Pakistan. By utilizing the text Cracking India, author Bapsi Sidhwa
examines the disparities between the two types of memories in order to reconcile the past with
contemporary India/Pakistan.
India and Pakistan are built from the same foundational nation of India before Partition; thus, their
histories are irrevocably bound together despite their contemporary violence and distrust towards each
other. India was once colonized by the British for three centuries, known as the jewel in the British
crown for its wealth in resources and spices. Regarding India s independence from the British Empire
in 1947, a bitter victory emerged as the Partition of India

Ok so in this paper I will be looking at the Simply Green Product brand and seeing what can be done
with their company as far as their patenting and packaging of their product SafePac. So there is a lot
of information that will be covered here. Also we have to look at the time frame that SGB was using
the SafePac logo, on their equipment. The other thing is that we have to look at the trademark and the
other laws that incorporate trademarks and patents. So listed below is the topics that I would like to

1. Deciding if SGP can register their product name as a trademark.
2. Would the Trademark Dilution Revision Act be violated if the USTPO granted the trademark on

Because there is already a mark that is listed by the USPTO. This mark was first used in 2002 which is
6 years to the senior of SafePac, and SGP. Because of its seniority they have a claim to it and it would
add a little confusion if SGP would to market it. Because there would then be two products out there
with the same name, possibly cost some business for both companies. Here there would be a minor hit
on the Lanham act, which was put into place to protect legit business, so that they can keep using their
ideas, and investments. The reason why I say that is a minor hit is because even not knowing that this
was already in use they have a responsibility to the preexisting company and name of their product.
Even though there is no completion, and they are two separate spectrums of services. Still the idea was
first thought of by Safe Choice.

Should Computers Be Allowed in the Classroom

Today, professors at colleges all around the country are asking the same question. They are wondering
whether laptops in the college classroom actually facilitates a student s ability to learn or rather it
distracts them from the lesson being taught. Laptops were originally considered to be a small niche
market and were thought suitable mostly for specialized field applications such as the military, the
Internal Revenue Service, accountants and sales representatives. But today, there are already more
laptops than desktops in businesses, and laptops are becoming obligatory for student use and more
popular for general use.
The conflict lies in that a majority of college professors believe that allowing students to use laptop ...

* Ease of Access Most laptops have doors on the underside that allow the user to access the memory,

Consumption A typical laptop uses 20 90 W, compared to 100 800 W for desktops. This could be
particularly beneficial for colleges which run hundreds of personal computers, multiplying the
potential savings. * Quiet Laptops are often very quiet because they produce less heat and therefore
require fewer and slower cooling fans making them less of a distraction in the classroom environment.
* Battery a charged laptop can run several hours in case of a power outage and is not affected by short
power interruptions and brownouts. * All in One designed to be portable, laptops have everything

Frank Lloyd Wright s Fallingwater And Wim Delvoye
Visual art and construction can be integrated within one another through different mediums. Frank
Lloyd Wright shows this in the building, Fallingwater, while Wim Delvoye presents it in his piece,
Caterpillar 5bis. These two men have very unique and different styles but in the end they both relate to
art and construction. Whether it be art in construction or construction in art there is no doubt that the
two have crossed paths. Frank Lloyd Wright is an architect who lets art influence his construction. In
some of his pieces Wright lets the artistic beauty of surroundings and nature influence and be a part of
his buildings. Wright addressed the issue of boundaries in architecture, he had unique ideas and

The Cosmic Prison
There are many things that seem to be complete opposites of each other, yet after looking in depth our
immediate conclusion appears to be wrong and the reality is they share many similarities. A popular
example of this is the comparison between humans and chimpanzees. At an initial glance, humans
seem so far superior to chimpanzees that the difference is at an astronomical level. The concepts,
ideas, societies, relationships, technological advances that humans have brought are incomparable to
what little chimpanzees have accomplished. Yet as scientists have studied and observed closely, they
have noted that in reality we are made of nearly the exact same genetic structure as the chimp, varying
in only a 1% difference. This miniscule 1% ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Cosmic Prison, Eiseley explains how man confines themselves to their current understanding
of their self and their environment, without even considering the possibility of a greater inconceivable
universe. Although Eiseley makes sure to suggest that the human brain could be physically limited to
this understanding, he explains how it is most likely by man s will alone. This is because man is
unwilling to accept that they may not understand, or may be wrong. They believe that they are right
and won t give into other ideas. Eiseley explains this by stating that [Man] could never, by any
conceivable stretch of the imagination, be aware that their so called universe was, in actuality, the
prowling body of a cat or the more time enduring body of a philosopher . We think of ourselves as the
only sentient part of the universe, some big significant species. Stephen Crane s poem, A Man Said to
the Universe , holds this same ideology. In this poem, Man exclaims to the universe Sir, I exist! This
exclamation shows Man s attempt to be recognized, but he is shot down and told of how insignificant
he is compared to the rest of the infinitely existing universe, but they cannot see this because of their
arrogance. All three of these examples display man s anthropocentrism, although in different
approaches. The next visible connection between these works, closely related to the previous, is how
puny and insignificant man really is. If one takes a moment to think about it,

Summary Of King Leopold s Ghost
In King Leopold s Ghost, the author is narratively telling the story of what is essentially the first
international scandal between the people of Africa and Europe, and power hungry, greedy, and
ruthless, King Leopold II of Belgium. Using Henry Morton Stanley and his different groups of
adventurers as his primary sources of information, Hochschild takes the American and European
documentation of the event which makes the whole ordeal a bit cloudy, in order to try and expose the
horrific event that took place in the African Congo. In doing this, he is essentially able to tell a story of
history. This book follows the life of Henry Morton Stanley on his adventures as an explorer who is

Defending Violent Video Games in Adolescents
Do parents know what violent video games their children are playing? Playing violent games is
nontoxic, exciting fun, and no more harmful than watching something graphic on television. This is an
arguable point, and people want to know if violence shown in video games cause aggression, violent
actions, bullying, or weapon skills. The answer to this is a no brainer; most parents go about their busy
lives and leave their children unsupervised when these activities are taking place. If parents are
worried about what their children are learning from this, then they should be under adult supervision
during these activities or banned from them. It is the responsibility of the parents and not the law to

One of the most ridiculous common claims that are made against violent video games is that they can

players to perform violent actions. Proponents of this view argue that they not only give players the
skills to carry out their destructive wishes or that they desensitize, but that merely playing a game or
seeing it can drive one to reproduce the harmful acts represented in the game. If true, this would be the
most worrying of the three hypotheses. However the important point to take away from this is that
video games may indeed train people to hurt others but there are huge differences between violence in
a video game and violence in the real world. People understand that when they kill someone in a video
game there are zero repercussions. However,

Oil And Gas Maintain A Critical Role For Uae Industry And...
Oil and gas maintain a critical role for UAE industry and daily life for locals. However, the
government has put forth major efforts to increase their renewable energy capacity. They have also
focused on diversifying their economy so they aren t reliant on exporting oil and natural gas for
income. With the various complex construction projects in Dubai such as the Palm Islands or the Burj
Khalifa, the tallest skyscraper in the world, engineering and real estate have become major industries
in the country. UAE efforts to shift toward renewable energy, mostly constrained to the emirate Abu
Dhabi, have gained international attention. Recently, they hosted a meeting in Abu Dhabi of over one

It is similarly structured to the Cabinet of the United States with different departments such as the
Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Labor, etc. In order to choose the head of this branch, which is the
prime minister, the president appoints someone who is then approved by the Supreme Council; once
chosen, the prime minister then proposes the Cabinet, which the president must approve and ratify.
Additionally, there is the Federal National Council. This body of government is somewhat similar to
Congress where they represent a voice for the citizens and create laws which the Supreme Council
authorizes or rejects. Political disputes, not only in the host country, but also in neighboring countries
can greatly affect the success of business. So when discussing political disputes and risks you must
consider a wide variety of events. The nuclear crisis in Iran is an event that must be considered when
assessing the environment around the UAE. Recently, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action has
been signed by the representatives from the P5+1 (the five permanent powers of the UN Security
Council and Germany) powers and Iran, which requires Iran to remove large numbers of centrifuges
from different nuclear sites. Even though steps have been taken in the right direction to ease tensions
on this issue, there is always the chance that something similar to this could arise again. Another thing

How to Create Suspense and Tension
How to Create Suspense and Tension Literary suspense and tension are essential elements in any story,
both in fiction and some genres of non fiction. Several elements are needed to create and maintain the
suspense in a piece of writing, such as the reader s concern and empathy, looming danger, and
building of tension throughout the story. Each element plays an important role and is a necessary part
of a well devised plot. Suspense and tension begin and end with the character. The reader must first
know what the main character desires, which means the writer must supply this information from the
start. Does the main character need adventure, romance, freedom? What is holding him back from
reaching what he desires, and what are the consequences if he cannot reach his goal? Both internal and
external conflict is required, and suspense can only build when the character s physical, psychological,
spiritual, relational, and/or emotional wellness is threatened. After these key points are established, a
foundation can be laid for suspense and tension. One way of maintaining tension is saying no to your
character. Whatever he wants, continue to withhold it from him. Gratification releases tension rather
than building it. Constant change feeds tension. New challenges, new information, and more
complications drive tension, keeping the reader invested in the character s plight. Immediate
explanation isn t necessary when adding these unexpected changes. Those details can be added

The Rolling Stones And The Stones
The Rolling Stones Stones, a simple concretion of earthy or mineral matter, a rock, a building block, it
may be precious, or it may be garbage. The Rolling Stones are very similar to a pack a stones, a pack
of random men to play music. They first started as a small measly band that soon grew into an
international sensation. The Stones created some of the most widely known tunes and they also
created one of the most iconic styles of music, rock and roll. The Rolling Stones were defined by the
very famous founding trio, The Stones themselves, their extraordinary style and their gruesome
political troubles. Even with some hardships and struggles their success was quickly awarded with
countless music rewards.
The Creation of the Rolling Stones The group named The Rolling Stones took a very long time to
form and it all started with the founding trio. The Rolling Stones were a rock band formed by the
famous trio of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Brian Jones. Together they recruited musicians to
their rock and roll group. The Rolling Stones Biography states that, The Rolling Stones origins date
back to the boyhood friendship of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, formed in 1957. In October 1960
Richards and Jagger ran into each other. They both noticed their enthusiasm or the rock and roll and
blues music. After the encounter Richards soon joined Little Boy Blues and the Clues Boys, Jagger s
blues group. Furthermore, while making rounds of London blues clubs, Jagger and

The Night Before The Moon Essay
Before the swan met the moon, there were only two beautiful things in her life dancing and her beauty.
She knew the moon was a kind man, with his gentle eyes which turned into small crescents when he
smiled, but she would never be quite good enough for him. Even though she danced and danced and
danced, until the snow underneath her feet turned into a river of red, she could only blend with the
moonlight, but the swan was a swan. And a swan could not be the moon.
So she offered herself to the moon, to the moon who must love her so much. She stood there under his
gaze in her naked glory, his large hands which could build worlds, soft against her trembling skin. He
tried to push her away, but the swan was nothing but determined.

But what is the point of wishing upon a dying star?
The girl who thought she was a swan, she was actually a monster. She was a black hole, she killed the
moon.
The moon who used to be loved by the Sun was broken, it lost its light when it finally left the Sun s
shadow, there was no more moonlight for the girl to dance in, and the moon wouldn t dance with her
anymore.
Time used to chase her, but now she had all the time in the world, because the world stopped spinning
when the Sun stopped loving the moon.
The moon was no longer the moon, he was a thousand pieces of stars consumed by the black hole, and
the girl spent what felt like light years trying to find all the pieces, and she tried to piece the moon
back together.
But the girl never managed to get the moon back together quite right, because the hands which used to
build, could only break, and the eyes which used to be so gentle, there was a caged beast inside.
It wasn t okay, it would never be okay. But it was the fault of the girl who thought she was a swan.
She would dance and dance, and let him break her again and again, until she figured out the way for
him to love her.
She couldn t leave.
It was all the fault of the girl who wasn t the swan.

Globalization Promoted The Development Of Productive Forces
Globalization promoted the development of productive forces. Globalization may be defined as the
integration of the world s people, firms and government. In the modern context, globalization is
usually the result of closer ties in international trade, known as bilateral trade agreements. The WTO
and NAFTA are two examples of such bilateral trade agreements. With such agreements, cross country
investment increases. This increase in investment is aided by the increase in information technology
and communications. (Green, 2016)

Why Do Some Children have Foetal Alcohol Syndrome and Some...
For many years the questions has been raised as to why not all children are affected by Foetal Alcohol
Syndrome even if the mother was drinking alcohol during her pregnancy. The theory that genetics
plays a role in whether a child will have FAS first came about through studying twins. In a sample size
16 sets of twins, which were all exposed to alcohol while in the uterus, out of the 5 sets of identical
twins, in each set both children were affected by FAS. Out of the 11 sets of fraternal twins, 4 sets had
the same out come as the identical twins, while in the other 7 sets only one child per set was affect by
FAS. Through this research it can therefore be understood that it was the difference in DNA of the
fraternal twins that lead to only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another area of study is that if the mother has both or one of the alleles ADH1B*2 and ADH1B*3 her
child is protected from FAS. ADH1B*2 and ADH1B*3 are polymorphisms of ADH1B which comes
from the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), which is a catalyzing enzyme involved with the oxidation of
ethanol. These alleles code for enzymes that cause oxidation of ethanol to occur at a much faster rate
than usual. By having a faster oxidation rate alcohol will be metabolized and detoxified sooner. The
alcohol consumed goes into your blood stream and is spread through the body, which could have a
teratogenic effect on the foetus, until the alcohol has been completely metabolized. Therefore the
faster the alcohol can be metabolized the less chance there is of it getting to the placenta and therefore
into the foetus bloodstream. Due to the fact that the alcohol won t be able to get to the foetus because
it oxidised much quicker, the foetus is protected from the effects of the alcohol which lead to FAS.
The most recent discovery to provide evidence that genetics is a contributing factor to the
development of FAS is the discovery of the exact locus that controls the alcohol sensitivity of the L1
protein. L1 is an essential part of the neural development of foetuses. It is located on the outside of
cells and is important to the joining of cells as well as axon control and movement of cells.
Phosphorylation, controlled by the enzyme ERK2, occurred inside the L1

To finance the acquisition, RJR proposed the issue of a preferred stock of $1.2 billion with twelve years US domestic notes of the same amount. To analyze the case there are two major components. First requirement is to examine the financing alternatives available to the company in order to assess their suitability. Secondly, identify other financing alternatives that may be suitable for R.J Reynolds. Three financing alternatives are suitable for the company (Hillier, D., Grinblatt, M., Titman, S. • 4. Atoms And Covalent Bonds Covalent bonding starts when atoms are sharing pairs of electrons. Atoms will covalently bond with other atoms to get more stability, which they get by forming a full electron shell. By sharing their outer most valence electrons, atoms fill up their outer electron shell and get stability. Nonmetals will form covalent bonds with other nonmetals in order to gain stability. They also can form anywhere between one to three covalent bonds with other nonmetals depending on how many valence electrons they have. Covalent bonds are the strongest type of chemical bond. When two or more atoms have similar electronegativity, conditions are suitable for covalent bonding. Covalent bonds are the strongest type of chemical bond. Electronegativity increases toward the right of the periodic table and decreases down the table. Electronegativity is not an atomic property, but is there when atoms interact with each other. ... In a molten metal, the metallic bond is still there, but the ordered structure has been broken. The metallic bond isn t all the broken until the metal boils. The boiling point is actually a better guide to the strength of the metallic bond than melting point is. When melting, the bond is loose, not broken. Ionic bonding is a type of chemical bond formed between two ions with opposite charges. Ionic bonds are formed between a metal and a non metal. Non metals are stronger than metal and can get electrons easily from the metal. These ions attract each other and create an ionic bond. Ionic bonds are also known as electrovalent bonds. Ionic bonds form their bond when opposite charged ions in a chemical compound have an electrostatic attraction. South Africans were broken down into one of four racial groups based on appearance, known ancestry, socioeconomic status, and cultural lifestyle: Black, White, Colored and Indian. Places of residence and educational facilities were determined by racial classification. America had dealt with these same issues in the mid 1800 s Southern Blacks wanted public schools for their children but they did not demand racially integrated schools. Legal segregation of schools did not come to an end until the U.S. Supreme Court made the decision after Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. The Bible And The Interpretation Of The Bible Although the interpretation of the Bible is the particular task of the exegetes, it does not belong, however, as a monopoly, since it involves, in the Church, aspects that go beyond the scientific analysis of the texts. The Church, in effect, does not consider the Bible simply as a set of historical documents concerning its origins. She welcomes it as the Word of God that directs her and the whole world, in the present time. This conviction of faith has as a consequence the practice of updating and inculturating the biblical message, as well as the different ways of using the inspired texts, in the liturgy, the Lectio divina , the pastoral ministry, and the ecumenical movement. Measuring Reaction Rate Using Volume of Gas Produced Chemistry 12 Formal Report Measuring Reaction Rate using Volume of Gas Produced By John Doe 23th October 2012 Introduction An essential element of chemistry is finding reaction rates. This is because chemists need to know how long a reaction should take. In addition to needing to know the rate of a reaction at any point in time to monitor how the reaction is proceeding. Many factors effect reaction rates, two shown above include temperature and concentration. Concentration affects the rate of reactions because the more concentrated a solution the more likely collisions between particles will be. This is simply because there are more particles present to collide with each other. When the temperature is higher, particles will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In next reaction which took place at a temperature 10Ëš higher than that had a rate of 39.5 mL/minute. Next was the reaction which took place at 10Ëš below room temperature which resulted in a rate of 26.8 mL/minute. In the reaction that 20 mL of distilled water was added to the bleach solution and the temperature was kept constant, the reaction rate dropped to 16.2 mL/minute. Finally the slowest reaction occurred when 60 mL of distilled water was added to the bleach causing a rate of 10.8 mL/minute. The rate value changes as the temperature is changed. When the temperature increases by 10Ëš, the rate of the reaction increases by a factor of 0.12 (12%). This is again changed when the temperature is changed to 10Ëš below room temperature. This results in a rate of production of oxygen, which is decreased by a factor of 0.25 (25%). When the concentrations were changed so did the rate of reaction. When the concentration was changed to 0.265M the rate of reaction dropped by a factor of 0.5 (50%) below the control value. Furthermore when 60mL of water was added to the bleach dropping the concentration too 0.132M the rate dropped by a factor of 0.7 (70%). Although the intent of these few words are clear, the debate stems from the attempts to interpret the intent of the framers. Three major interpretations have been developed from the debates surrounding the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. These interpretations are the warrant approach, the reasonableness approach and the special needs approach. We will begin by discussing the warrant approach which is also the traditional approach to interpret the Fourth Amendment. The warrant approach focused on limiting valid searches to those done with a warrant based on probable cause (Bacigal, 1979). This meant that in order for a search to be valid under the Fourth Amendment there had to be judicial approval in advance of the search except when justified by absolute necessity (Stelzner, 1979). One of the main arguments for boxing being banned is that serious medical injury can result from boxing due to continuous blows to the head. In boxing when the head is knocked sideways, the brain swirls in the skull, its layers shearing and sliding off one another, tearing vital nerve fibres . Statistics show that 15 20% of boxers ending a professional career develop the punch drunk syndrome . Edouard Manet s The Luncheon on the Grass was a very controversial piece of it times as it depicted a nude female with fully clothed men. In understanding this controversy surrounding The Luncheon on the Grass, it is important to remember that in the nineteenth century (19th century) in which Manet revealed this painting it was at a time in which nude female images was viewed as objects of desire, voyeuristic, and subtle. With traditionally, the display of the female body was seen as more mythical such as goddess like. For the typical male viewer, this provided comfort, freedom, and fantasy. Manet changed all this with his painting of The Luncheon on the Grass. First, Manet transformed the goddess like image of the nude female by painting the female as a modern Parisian woman with curves and less flattering features such as more body fat. Manet also has the female figure at the focal point of the painting gazing as if looking straight at the audience. One of the most complex feminist movements of the 20th century followed the period s most tumultuous event: World War II. Lean Manufacturing Is An Approach Introduction Lean Manufacturing is an approach taken by manufacturing organization to increase efficiency through optimization and maximize customer value while minimizing waste. Traditionally, Lean principles were applied to manufacturing industries especially automotive companies. However, with the success in automotive industry, it no longer limited to automotive sector and can be applied in other manufacturing sectors as well as services industries (Balle, et al., 2006). The drivers for implementing Lean in both manufacturing and service sectors are customer demands for better quality products and services, managerial demands for cost reduction and sustaining in an increasing market competitiveness. Lean implementation and various success stories has led companies worldwide to introduce lean in their operations and services but majority of these companies achieved only modest levels of success (Womack Jones, 2003). It is reported that many organizations are not able to transform themselves to lean organization and thus at some point of time, lean implementation is destined to fail (Farris, et al., 2009). Some of the main factors for lean failures are poor communication, lack of strong leadership, lack of learning, staff resistance to change, and lack of clear direction (Emiliani Stec, 2005). • 26. The Benefits of a Liberal Arts Education The strength of a liberal arts education is the strong, varied foundation it provides over a wide spectrum of subjects. A liberal arts education is aimed at teaching you how to think. It helps you to develop strength of mind, and an ordered intellect. This broad based education allows students to create new theories, discoveries, and connections between fields. With such expansive roots, great innovators can build and expand from what others have learned, instead of wasting effort on rediscovery of what is already known. With the knowledge of a subject s strengths and capabilities, and weaknesses and restrictions, students can combine traits of different subjects to formulate new and more complicated concepts. New colors can only come from mixing those which already exist. The pigment of a new color depends on the shades and hues of the colors used to create it. Such is true for education. The resulting ideas are a sterling product of the compatibility of the subjects blended to create it. What vocational schools have in central focus, they lose in direct focus. Enormous concentration in one area pigeon holes, severely limiting the range of career opportunities. A liberal arts education on the other hand, teaches one how to think, and how to apply this to a variety of subjects. Both aspects have their strengths and their downfalls. However, one can hardly say the liberal arts is useless and should be tossed aside in the modern day. A better understanding of education comes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. The Battle At Midway During World War II Abstract The battle at Midway was a pivotal moment in World War II. The United States Navy was in desperate need for victory, while the over confident Japanese military force was riding on the tails of previous success. The U.S. gained intelligence and surprised the unsuspecting Japanese fleet. The battle was swift and just, with Japan sustaining a significant loss of life. Their loss of artillery, equipment and supplies proved to be unsurmountable. These losses led to a major shift in momentum towards the United States. The Japanese confidence level plummeted, in both the soldiers and the public. The U.S. celebrated the victory and built on that energy. Japan was forced to refocus military plans. Strategic initiatives changed from the Pacific theater to other, less desirable locations. A desperate focus to rebuild from the human and material loss was attempted. Carrier defense was strategized. Despite these refocus attempts; Japan was unable to regain triumph, making the Battle at Midway the most pivotal event in World War II history. Japan s losses, change in momentum and forced military refocus proved to be the revolution necessary to provide U.S. the triumph. The Battle of Midway June 4 7, 1942 recorded the most pivotal battle of World War II, the Battle of Midway. Prior to this, Japanese military ran almost unchecked throughout the western and central Pacific Ocean (Black, 2009). The recent defeat at Pearl Harbor wounded the United States ... • 32. The Collective Memory In Cracking India And The... Memory of a singular event can differ amongst individuals, even those in the same neighborhood or family. Each individual brings a collective of different experiences, mindsets, identities, etc. to the table and therefore, perceives events differently. Although a seemingly simple concept, there is a distinctness of individual memory that does not coincide with the collective memory of a community. In terms of historical events, a nation s communal memory is not solely rooted in fact but also in the oral histories of those individuals who lived through the event. There is no one history. Consequently, there is a discourse between the collective memory of the community and the individual memory. India s 1947 partition reveals that there are many different histories to the independence of India and the subsequent creation of Pakistan. By utilizing the text Cracking India, author Bapsi Sidhwa examines the disparities between the two types of memories in order to reconcile the past with contemporary India/Pakistan. India and Pakistan are built from the same foundational nation of India before Partition; thus, their histories are irrevocably bound together despite their contemporary violence and distrust towards each other. In The Cosmic Prison, Eiseley explains how man confines themselves to their current understanding of their self and their environment, without even considering the possibility of a greater inconceivable universe. Although Eiseley makes sure to suggest that the human brain could be physically limited to this understanding, he explains how it is most likely by man s will alone. This is because man is unwilling to accept that they may not understand, or may be wrong. They believe that they are right and won t give into other ideas. Eiseley explains this by stating that [Man] could never, by any conceivable stretch of the imagination, be aware that their so called universe was, in actuality, the prowling body of a cat or the more time enduring body of a philosopher . We think of ourselves as the only sentient part of the universe, some big significant species. Stephen Crane s poem, A Man Said to the Universe , holds this same ideology. In this poem, Man exclaims to the universe Sir, I exist! This exclamation shows Man s attempt to be recognized, but he is shot down and told of how insignificant he is compared to the rest of the infinitely existing universe, but they cannot see this because of their arrogance. All three of these examples display man s anthropocentrism, although in different approaches. The next visible connection between these works, closely related to the previous, is how puny and insignificant man really is. If one takes a moment to think about it, ... Proponents of this view argue that they not only give players the skills to carry out their destructive wishes or that they desensitize, but that merely playing a game or seeing it can drive one to reproduce the harmful acts represented in the game. Several elements are needed to create and maintain the suspense in a piece of writing, such as the reader s concern and empathy, looming danger, and building of tension throughout the story. Each element plays an important role and is a necessary part of a well devised plot. Suspense and tension begin and end with the character. The reader must first know what the main character desires, which means the writer must supply this information from the start. Does the main character need adventure, romance, freedom? What is holding him back from reaching what he desires, and what are the consequences if he cannot reach his goal? Both internal and external conflict is required, and suspense can only build when the character s physical, psychological, spiritual, relational, and/or emotional wellness is threatened. After these key points are established, a foundation can be laid for suspense and tension. One way of maintaining tension is saying no to your character. Whatever he wants, continue to withhold it from him. Gratification releases tension rather than building it. Constant change feeds tension. New challenges, new information, and more complications drive tension, keeping the reader invested in the character s plight. • 49. Why Do Some Children have Foetal Alcohol Syndrome and Some... For many years the questions has been raised as to why not all children are affected by Foetal Alcohol Syndrome even if the mother was drinking alcohol during her pregnancy. The theory that genetics plays a role in whether a child will have FAS first came about through studying twins. In a sample size 16 sets of twins, which were all exposed to alcohol while in the uterus, out of the 5 sets of identical twins, in each set both children were affected by FAS. Out of the 11 sets of fraternal twins, 4 sets had the same out come as the identical twins, while in the other 7 sets only one child per set was affect by FAS. Through this research it can therefore be understood that it was the difference in DNA of the fraternal twins that lead to only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another area of study is that if the mother has both or one of the alleles ADH1B*2 and ADH1B*3 her child is protected from FAS. ADH1B*2 and ADH1B*3 are polymorphisms of ADH1B which comes from the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), which is a catalyzing enzyme involved with the oxidation of ethanol. These alleles code for enzymes that cause oxidation of ethanol to occur at a much faster rate than usual. By having a faster oxidation rate alcohol will be metabolized and detoxified sooner. The alcohol consumed goes into your blood stream and is spread through the body, which could have a teratogenic effect on the foetus, until the alcohol has been completely metabolized. Therefore the faster the alcohol can be metabolized the less chance there is of it getting to the placenta and therefore into the foetus bloodstream. Due to the fact that the alcohol won t be able to get to the foetus because it oxidised much quicker, the foetus is protected from the effects of the alcohol which lead to FAS. The most recent discovery to provide evidence that genetics is a contributing factor to the development of FAS is the discovery of the exact locus that controls the alcohol sensitivity of the L1 protein. L1 is an essential part of the neural development of foetuses. It is located on the outside of cells and is important to the joining of cells as well as axon control and movement of cells. Phosphorylation, controlled by the enzyme ERK2, occurred inside the L1 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
