Pulmonary tuberculosis is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Hospitals were historically built near the sea for tuberculosis patients, as the sea breeze was thought to help recovery from the disease. Symptoms of pulmonary TB may include coughing up blood, excessive sweating, weight loss, and general feeling unwell. The disease spreads through airborne droplets from infected individuals talking, coughing, sneezing, laughing, or singing, and if left untreated can cause serious lung damage or death.
