Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease
usually caused by the bacteria
Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
 Tuberculosis an infectious disease usually
caused by the bacteria.
 Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs, but
can also affect other parts of the body.
 Tuberculosis is spread through the air when
people infected with TB cough, spit, speak,
or sneeze.
 One-third of the world's population is
thought to be infected with TB.
Pulmonary
 If a tuberculosis infection does become active,
it most commonly involves the lungs.
 Symptoms may include chest pain and a
extended cough producing sputum.
 Occasionally, people may cough out blood in
small amounts, and in very rare cases.
Extra pulmonary
 In 15–20% of active cases, the infection
spreads outside the lungs, causing other kinds
of TB.
 Extra pulmonary TB occurs more commonly
in immunosuppressed persons and young
children.
Mycobacteria
The main cause of TB is Mycobacterium
tuberculosis, a small, aerobic, non-
motile bacillus.
It divides every 16 to 20 hours, which is
an extremely slow rate compared with
other bacteria, which usually divide in less
than an hour.
TB patients should:
 stay in places which are well ventilated.
 cover his mouth while coughing.
 Spend time outdoors as much as possible.
 If possible, sleep alone in a separate, adequately
ventilated room.
 Spend as little time as possible on public transport
and other public places.
 avoid staying in crowdie places.
