Tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient disease that has affected humans for thousands of years. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB primarily affects the lungs and is transmitted through inhaling droplets from infected individuals. While many who are exposed will not become infected, one third of the world's population is estimated to be infected with the latent form of TB. Active pulmonary TB is most commonly transmitted through coughing or sneezing. While treatment exists, TB remains one of the leading infectious disease causes of death worldwide.
