Cholesterol is a type of fat found in the body and obtained through diet. There are two types - LDL (bad) cholesterol which can clog arteries, and HDL (good) cholesterol which removes cholesterol from arteries. A high cholesterol level over many years increases the risks of heart attack and stroke by allowing cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet, exercise, weight control and not smoking can help manage cholesterol levels.
