Atrial septal defect is a congenital heart defect where blood flows between the upper chambers of the heart, the atria, because of a hole in the interatrial septum. It is usually asymptomatic in children but can cause difficulties breathing, respiratory infections, palpitations, and shortness of breath with activity. While small defects may close on their own, larger defects require cardiac evaluation and treatment to prevent issues like strokes or lung illnesses.
