- 1. Plants - Earth's Producers Bryophytes & Pteridophytes
- 2. Plants Feed the World! • All plants are autotrophs – They produce their own “food” • thus, the name “producers” • Every other living thing is fed from either – Plants – Plant-eating Animals – Animals that eat plant-eating animals
- 3. Plant Cell Characteristics • Rigid cell walls – (in addition to a flexible cell membrane) • Chloroplasts – for photosynthesis – to make "food" (glucose) from sunlight
- 4. Plant Anatomy • Roots (or rhizoids) – anchor plant in soil – absorb water and minerals – sometimes store food • Stems – support leaves/flowers – woody or herbaceous – transport water/nutrients • Leaves – absorb sunlight – allow water vapor, carbon dioxide and oxygen in & out through stomata – chloroplasts: photosynthesis • Fruiting Body – store carbohydrates (glucose) – reproduction (seeds, etc.)
- 5. Major Plant Groups • Mosses • Ferns • Conifers • Flowering Plants
- 6. Mosses - Bryophytes • Non-Vascular – Lack a system of tubes for water and nutrient transportation • Get water & nutrients directly from atmosphere – Grow only in damp, shaded areas (on soil, trees, rocks) • Rhizoids instead of roots • Spores instead of seeds
- 7. Moss Reproduction • Gametophyte-stage plants produce male and female cells – male cells swim through water to reach eggs • Fertilized egg grows into sporophyte structures – Sporophytes produce spores – wind disperses spores – spores grow into new gametophytes
- 9. Pteridophytes - Ferns • Vascular – Has a system of vessels (specialized tissues that form tiny tubes) to transport fluids • xylem (up from roots) • phloem (down from leaves) – Shallow roots absorb water & nutrients – Grow in damp, shaded areas • Fronds instead of leaves – grow from underground stems (rhizomes) • Spores to Reproduce – similar to moss life cycle
