3. What Are Plants?
• Plants are from the kingdom Plantea. Plants are all around
us.
• We get food, wood, oxygen and shelter (trees) from plants.
• Plants also prevent soil erosion.
• Plants only need air, water, Chlorophyll and energy from
sunlight to help them prepare food. They make their own
food unlike animals.
5. How plants and animals depend on each other
depend on each other
When animals
die they
Provide
Nutrients to
The soil.
Animals also
Give plants
Carbon dioxide
Which they
Need.

7. Terrestrial & Aquatic Plants
• Plants that grow on land are called Terrestrial plants. The
different types of terrestrial plants are -
Annual plants - It is a plant that completes its life cycle, from
germination to the production of seed, within one year, and then
dies.
Biennial plants - They are flowering plants that take two years to
complete its biological lifecycle.
Perennial plants - It is a plant that lives for more than two years.
They can be classified into two groups -
Evergreen - Has leaves throughout the year.
Deciduous - Lose leaves seasonally.
• Plants that have adapted to grow in aquatic areas (saltwater or
freshwater) are called Aquatic plants.Ex. Alge

9. Unusual Plants
• Cactus - Cacti come from the family
Cactaceae. They grow in dry areas and
have a modified stem and leaf. The stem is
thick and fleshy and prepares and stores
food. The stem protects the plant from
animals and helps store water.
• Croton - Croton is a unusual plant because
it is colourful. The substance of a colourful
pigment hides the green chlorophyll.
• Moulds and mushrooms - Moulds are a
group of fungi. They are decomposers of
earths organic waste. Mushrooms are also
a group of fungi. All mushrooms are fungi
but only small proportions are edible. It
requires grate knowledge to know which
mushroom is edible. Some mushrooms are
very deadly.
10. Carnivorous Plants
• Pitfall traps (Pitcher plants) - These
plants trap prey in a rolled up leaf that
contains a pool of digestive enzymes or
bacteria.
• Flypaper traps - These plants use a
sticky mucilage
• Snap traps -Snap traps utilize rapid leaf
movements.
• Bladder traps - These plants trap in prey
with a bladder that generates an internal
vacuum.
• Lobster traps - These traps are also
known as eel traps, force prey to move
towards a digestive organ with inward-
pointing hairs.
