INTRODUCTION
.
DEFINITION
Natural childbirth can refer to many different ways of giving birth without
using pain medication, either in the home or at the hospital or birthing
center.
Or
A system of managing childbirth in which the mother receives preparatory
education in order to remain conscious during and assist in delivery with
minimal or no use of drugs or anesthetics.
Natural childbirth is giving birth using no medicines at all, instead using
techniques such as relaxation and controlled breathing for pain. "Natural
Childbirth" Or "Drug-Free Birth," they mean giving birth vaginally without
the use of medications to dull any pain. This type of childbirth also avoids
the use of other medical interventions, such as forceps, labor induction, or
episiotomy. Some pregnant people who choose to have an non medicated
birth do so in a hospital setting or birthing center, while others opt to have
a home birth. For many, having a natural childbirth isn't about being
"brave”. It's about treating labor and delivery as natural events.
TYPES OF TECHNIQUES
There are a number of different natural birth techniques that can
be used when trying to have baby without the use of any medical
interventions. The following techniques have been successfully
used for many years in aiding natural birth-
1. Lamaze method
2. Water delivery
3. The Alexander techniques
4. The Bradley Method
5. Hypnosis
6. Yoga
7. Meditation
8. Walking
9. Massage or Counter pressure
10. Taking a bath or shower
11. Birthing balls
12. Immersion in warm water or a Jacuzzi
13. Distractions via activities to take the focus off
14. Listening to soothing music
15. Visual imagery
TYPES OF TECHNIQUES-
There are a number of different natural birth techniques that can
be used when trying to have baby without the use of any medical
interventions. The following techniques have been successfully
Distractions via activities to take the focus off the pain
It also known as the Psycho prophylactic method or simply
Lamaze. Coping techniques, including comfort measures,
relaxation and breathing. Lamaze breathing is a controlled,
slow, deep breathing techniques also known as conscious
breathing.
The Lamaze method advocates six healthy birth practices.
These are: allowing labor to begin on its own
 allowing the person giving birth
 to walk around and change positions during labor and
delivery encouraging continuous emotional support from a
loved one, doula, or friend
 avoiding unnecessary medical interventions
 avoiding giving birth while lying on the back and
encouraging the person in labor to follow their instincts to
push
 keeping the birthing parent and the baby together after the
birth
Start with a slow deep breath as your contraction starts and
then slowly breathe out, releasing all physical tension from
your head to your toes. This is often referred to as an
organizing breath. Slowly inhale through your nose and then
pause. Then exhale slowly through your mouth.
Breathing techniques to help the process of labor are practiced.
Husband/ partner/ coach helps comfort mother. Aims to
provide women with ways to relax and deal with pain during a
natural childbirth. One way is through patterned breathing.
Control contractions by using breathing and muscle control
techniques. Parents prepare themselves for birth with weekly
training classes.
Six researches – based principles, called “The Lamaze Healthy
Birth Practices”.
 Let labor start on its own ·
 Keep moving during labor
1. LAMAZE METHOD
 Use a labor support team
 Avoid medical intervention
 When delivering baby,
 Stay together after birth
Disadvantage-
 Take weekly classes
 cost effectiveness
It is the process of giving birth in water using a deep bath or
birthing pool. Water birth is a process of giving birth in a tub of
warm water. Many women find that sitting or floating in water
during labor helps them to relax and manage pain. Warm water
is soothing comforting relaxing. In later stages of labor, water
can speed up the labor, with mother perceiving less pain. The
water baby has a much gentle transition to the outside world, as
she is born into an environment similar to her mother’s womb.
A person remains in the water during the pushing phase and
actual birth of the baby. Than the baby is brought to the surface
of the water after the baby is born. A water birth may be
followed by the birth of the placenta in or out of the water. This
is also known as Hydrotherapy.
Risk of water birth-
 Mother your baby could get an infection.
 The umbilical cord could snap before your baby comes out
of the water.
 Your baby’s body temperature could be too high or too
low.
 Your baby could breathe in bath water.
 Your baby could have seizures or not be able to breathe.
Precaution- You have an experienced, licensed health care
professional with doctor backup to help you through the labor
and delivery. High standards are kept to ensure the tub is clean
and well-maintained. Proper infection control measures are in
place. .
2. WATER BIRTH
Benefits of water birth-
 Shorter labors
 Reduce perineal trauma
 Relaxation
 Less need for painkillers
 A positive birth experience
 Help ease pain
 Improved circulation
 Privacy and focus
 Calm start for the baby
It teaches improved posture and movement, which is believed
to help reduce and prevent problems caused by unhelpful
habits. It has 5 principles-
 Recognition of habits & Inhibition and non-doing
 Recognition of the faculty sensory awareness
 Giving direction & Primary control
 It is motor skill which helps people how to treat their body.
 This method corrects body stance, relieves muscles
contractions, and makes body movements easier.
This technique is very helpful, especially during pregnancy
when one must carry the embryo. It can also beneficial to you
and your baby by making you aware of harmful feeding and
carrying habits that so easily develop.
By thinking of the way hold the child, naturally hold less
tension, which your baby will automatically respond to.
Posture and balance, Sporting performance, Back pain
management, Stress management, Increased confidence and
self esteem.
3. THE ALEXANDER METHOD
It is also known as “Husband-coached natural childbirth”. Dr.
Robert Bradley came up with a revolutionary idea for its time
that people didn’t need medications to give birth. But the truly
shocking concept was that you should have your partner by
side while in labor. It’s also a comprehensive plan that focuses
on healthy living throughout pregnancy.
This includes- ·Maintaining a nutritious diet , Exercising,
Improving education It is a 12 weeks course that’s meant to be
a partnered experience between you and your significant other.
Your partners becomes your coach. Coach will help to
encourage the relaxation techniques learned during the course
as well as serve as your advocate during labor and delivery
Classes are kept small to encourage more one-on-one
interactions between students and instructors. Each couple will
receives a 130 pages workbook that corresponds on the stages
of pregnancy as well as labor, birth, and postpartum periods.
Throughout the 12 week class (starting in 5th month).
4. THE BRADLEY METHOD
The benefits of this type of childbirth Avoidance of drugs
during pregnancy. Birth. Breastfeeding, unless medically
necessary Active partner participation as a coach Breathing
work and relaxation for pain management Benefits of
breastfeeding Proper nutrition for a healthy pregnancy and
baby.
It proponents believe that pregnant people can train their brains
to elicit a deep relaxation response on demand, as long as they
prepare before giving birth. Hypnotherapy often describe
feeling “pressure” instead of “pain” during labor. The use of
hypnosis helps laboring people break what termed the “Fear-
Tension-Pain syndrome”. It can help with fertility issues by
helping both women and men feel calmer, relaxed and more in
control, and therefore reducing stress and anxiety. Relaxed the
brain produces endorphins which helps restore hormone
balance, regulate the nervous system and promote a healthy
immune system. It can help both during and after pregnancy-
Reduce labor time, reduce fatigue in the mother during and
after birth, reduce postnatal recovery time and assists the
natural birth process, help morning sickness, improve oxygen
levels in mother and baby and cost savings.
Disadvantage-
Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Drowsiness, Anxiety or distress,
Sleep problems Unsuitable for psychosis Potential for false
memories
5. HYPNOSIS
Involves a series of body positions (called postures or asana)
and breathing exercises (called pranayama). It aims to build
strength and flexibility to improve mental and physical
wellbeing. Pregnancy yoga classes use exercises that are safe
during pregnancy. Practicing prenatal yoga can benefits both
mother and child. Prenatal yoga focuses on breathing
techniques and gentle stretching.
These classes are designed to make more flexible and prepare
for labor. To create a balance between emotional, mental,
physical, spiritual dimensions.
Yoga is a low-impact fitness routine that can help improve
mood and sleep, increase strength and flexibility, and decrease
lower back pain, improves blood flow, build a support system.
Disadvantage-
 Physical Strain and Injury Risk.
 Lack of Individualized Attention.
 Limited Focus on Muscle Recovery.
 Potential for Overstretching.
6. YOGA
Meditation is an easy way to help both mother and baby during
those long months of pregnancy. It can help cope with a variety
of physical and emotional stresses during pregnancy, enabling
to relax and focus concentration, reduce stress, lower blood
pressure and enhance peace of mind. It can also be useful in
treating mild to moderate anxiety or depression during
pregnancy.
Mindfulness during pregnancy provides with the opportunity to
uncover fears and bring awareness of body and its capabilities.
Find a comfortable position, focus on belly, breath deeply,
focused attention, relaxed breathing, a quiet environment, a
comfortable position, body scan.
7. MEDITATION
 Walking can be a safe, beneficial exercise during
pregnancy Walking is a moderate aerobic activity that
folks because it’s safe, effective, accessible. Walking is
safe activity during pregnancy because it works
cardiovascular system without taking muscles and joints.
 Its maintaining a healthy weight gain throughout
pregnancy. It keeps muscles strong to reduce back pain.
 It maintains or improves fitness level throughout
pregnancy. Keep bowels moving to combat constipation.
Benefits of walking during pregnancy- Safe, Accessible,
Effective, Improves Mood, Enhances Sleep, Lowers Back Pain.
Must Stop Walking if: An abnormally rapid heartbeat,
Bleeding, Extreme fatigue,You experience any form pain,
Dizziness, Faintness or light-headedness, Lack of normal fetal
movement, Sudden swelling
8. WALKING
 Massage therapy during pregnancy is a safe way to relieve
physical and mental stressors. To provide including a sense of
wellness, improved relaxation, better sleep.
 Prenatal massage is a specialized certification, massage
therapist who practice it receive advanced education in safe
techniques for pregnant women.
 Massage has been used for to improve overall health, reduce
stress, relieved muscle tension.
 Massage and pregnancy has often received ambivalent
responses from the health community regarding the safety and
purpose of massage during pregnancy.
 Massaging the stomach and uterine area- Deep tissue massage
of the abdomen should be avoided to prevent discomfort any
disruption of the placenta or injury to the baby.
 Stop immediately Massage for - nausea, vomiting, or
morning sickness, at high risk of miscarriage, a high-risk
pregnancy such as placental abruption. preterm labor etc.
 Shoulders, hands, legs and lower back or sacrum area. Pressure
is applied for 30 seconds to two minutes.
 Counter-pressure consists of steady, strong force applied to one
spot on the lower back during contractions using the heel of the
hand, or pressure on the side of each hip using both hands.
 Counter-pressure helps alleviate back pain during labor,
especially in those women experiencing “back labor.”
9. MASSAGE / COUNTER PRESSURE
 Shower may better for cleaning body, baths are
great for relaxing muscles, stimulating nervous
system and exfoliating skin.
 Types of baths that are good for include the
following- Sitz baths boost healing Oatmeal baths
soothe inflammation Aromatherapy baths relax
mind and body Cold and flu bath help feel better
 Advantage of showering over taking a bath-
Showers can boost immune system Shower can
make hair and skin glow Cold showers may help
treat depression
10. TAKING A WARM BATH SHOWER
 Birthing Ball A birth ball is a slightly larger version of a
gym ball that use to exercise, sit comfortably and practice
positions for labor.
 It use for sitting comfortably and exercise and pain relief,
relieve spinal pressure and back pain and provide support
for knees and ankles.
 Birth ball are brilliant way of your keeping hips and pelvis
flexible and supple through pregnancy. They are also
fantastic in all stages of labor, it helps open up the pelvis
and create space to supporting swaying and moving to help
baby drop down ready for birth.
 During labor a birthing ball can reduce the pain of
contraction and also help maintain upright position which
lets gravity take some effects and open pelvis ready to birth.
Sit on your birthing ball from very early on in pregnancy.
Then, from around 32 weeks, you can use it to help you
with some gentle pregnancy exercises
11. BIRTHING BALL
 Taking a dip in a hot tub might be the ultimate way to relax.
Warm water is also known as soothe muscles. During a
pregnancy on the other hand hot tubs should be used
cautiously or not at all. Water temperature in the hot tub
should never exceed.
 Body temperature should not exceed 102.2F easily spend
more than 10 min in warm tub.
 Avoid the Jacuzzi during first trimester and feeling having
fever. High temperatures, especially early in pregnancy,
have been associated with increased risk of neural tube
defects.
12. JACUUZI
 Distraction via Activities To Take The Focus Of Pain
Distraction means shifting or moving attention away.
 So distraction techniques should help the women not
feeling pain so these are- Counting, Deep Breathing,
Bubbles, Alphabet Challenge, Listen To Music Audio
Books, Reading, Tapping Fingers, Drawing/Doodling, Craft
And Models, Walking And Talking, Constructions, Apps,
TV /DVD, Stress Ball, Writing, Puzzles, Massage,
Imagination Walk, Cooking, What’s In My World
 Distraction can help a person achieve distance from them
and to see them as 'just thoughts' rather than convincing
truths about themselves or the world.
 Distraction has been shown to have direct therapeutic
benefit both physically and psychologically.
13. Distractions Via Activities To Take
The Focus Off The Pain
 It is proven that music has a role in brain development
before birth. During pregnancy will not have a soothing
and uplifting effects on pregnant women, but also a
positive influence on unborn baby.
 Around 16-18 weeks of pregnancy the little one hears its
very first sound. 20 min daily for 12 weeks listening a
music

pain. Very loud noises may be able to damage your baby's
hearing.
 Ear plugs or earmuffs do not protect your baby's hearing.
If you're pregnant the only way to protect your baby's
hearing is to stay away from loud noise.
 Use for pregnant women- Stress and anxiety during
pregnancy and labor Preeclampsia treatment sleep Prenatal
depression Fetal heart rate increases on mother listening to
fast music and decreases in response to slow and relaxing
musical piece. fetal memory development hearing

14. LISTENING MUSIC
 Visual Imagery Explaining what is going on in the body
and using those images as a relaxation tool is also
beneficial.
 His practice during pregnancy to help create a deeper
bond with your baby. Four stage of imagery- ·
1. Image generation
2. Image maintenance ·
3. Image inspection ·
4. Image transformation
 Visualization is a techniques women use to help them
manage labor and delivery.
 Many childbirth educators teach visualization as a way to
help women relax and reduce fear and pain during labor.
1. Reduce stress, anxiety and tension.
2. Decrease pain.
3. Lower blood pressure.
4. Improve oxygenation throughout your body .
5. To help lower stress, pain, or other negative
feelings.
 The concept is simple: imagine a place that is peaceful and
relaxing to you. It can be a place you have been to or one
created purely from your imagination. This technique is
sometimes called visualization, or guided meditation.
