Presentation on Drones and Open Street Maps

State of the Map Asia is an annual gathering of people who contribute to OpenStreetMap (OSM) movement in Asia in different ways. During the conference, representatives from different countries of Asia presented the state of OpenStreetMap in their countries, as well as participate in discussions, mapping activities, workshops and events related to the free and open map of the world. During the Nepal session, there were four presentations where the presenter talked about different kind of projects that are being done around OSM and Open data with the use of different tools and frontier technologies . I represented Nepal Flying Labs ,WeRobotics and gave 10 minute lightning talk on the topic : Drones and Open Street Maps. I briefly talked about the regulatory environment in the country for use of Drones and its current status. I also highlighted on the possibility of using high resolution satellite images as a Base Map in the Open street maps thus allowing any users to easily identify ground details and help them manually trace the objects more accurately. I would like to thank Kathmandu Living Labs, the main organizer of this event for providing us this opportunity.

MULTIPLE OBJECTS AND ROAD DETECTION IN UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles have greater potential to widely used in military and civil applications. Additionally equipped with the cameras can also be used in agriculture and surveillance. Aerial imagery has its own unique challenges that differ from the training set of modern-day object detectors, since it is made of images of larger areas compared to the regular datasets and the objects are very small on the contrary. These problems do not allow us to use common object detection models. Currently there are many computer vision algorithm that are designed using human centric photographs, But from the top view imagery taken vertically the objects of interest are small and fewer features mostly appearing flat and rectangular, certain objects closer to each other can also overlap. So detecting most of the objects from the birds eye view is a challenging task. Hence the work will be focusing on detecting multiple objects from those images using enhanced ResNet, FPN, FasterRCNN models thereby providing an effective surveillance for the UAV and extraction of road networks from aerial images has fundamental importance.

The aim of the paper is to embed UAVs with A.I and explore possible application of the same. Face Recognition is needed and applicable in various fields like Defense, Health Care, Search and Rescue, Surveillance and Delivery System. Dataset creation, training and recognizer are the basis of Face recognition system. Face recognition systems developed are acceptably effective with detection and identification of the objects. We aim to create an artificial intelligence which is integrated in an UAV for face recognition and surveillance. We also intend to introduce anti collision system on the A.I to help the drone be safer and prevent damages to itself and the surround. The same is based on sonar sensors which would measure the distance the between the drone and object. Once detected the drone will maneuver itself out of the trajectory of collision. A path finding algorithm is part of the A.I to help the drone navigate 2 dimensional maps on its own. by integration of both object detection and path finding we aim to create an automated drone capable of functioning without human intervention of any kind. Feature Detection in Aerial Images for Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (report)

Robotic aircraft can be rapidly deployed to capture high-resolution, low-cost aerial imagery for the purpose of post-disaster damage and needs assessment. Recently, WeRobotics, OpenAerialMap, and the World Bank captured a set of aerial images from an island state in the South Pacific, to challenge groups of qualified volunteers to develop various classifiers for baseline analysis and future damage assessment. Dr. Patrick Meier from WeRobotics made the imagery available to me, and I decided to design classifiers to detect coconut trees and asphalt/dirt roads. Four distinct object detectors (two ensembles of weak learners and two convolutional neural networks) were developed, of which two (ACF, Faster R-CNN) are based on very recently developed algorithms. Boosted ensembles of decision stumps outperformed convolutional networks in detecting coconut trees. A semantic segmentation network detected roads reasonably well, and performance might be improved by adding more training images, including synthetically generated ones.

The current scenario in the world is that almost all people have their own vehicle for conveyance. As, vehicle has become the most integral part of mankind. It travels as a part and parcel of man’s life. Theft happens increasingly at one place or the other, when there is improper surveillance. The safety of vehicles is extremely essential in all areas, especially in public places. In this work, the vehicle tracking and locking system are done in order to satisfy the needs of security of the vehicle. Vehicle theft handling is one of the important crises in today's world. Countries which are densely populated like India finds it very difficult to track the vehicle after theft. This system consist an advanced microprocessor board which is connected to the GPS to get the real time location of the vehicle which is then connected to the mobile application through IoT platform. Mobile application will show the location of the vehicle in a map and also the places surrounding the vehicle by capturing it through camera connected to the system. Not only to identify the theft but also it avoids the theft by having dual switching method both on vehicle and the mobile application connected to the vehicle via Bluetooth. It also gives the alert notification in the mobile if someone takes the vehicle when it is turned on in the mobile.

In this study, a basic autonomous vehicle software infrastructure and mobile Augmented Reality application that can work on Android devices have been developed. The Mobile Augmented Reality app serves inside and outside the vehicle. In addition, this application has been shown to support multiple autonomous system infrastructures.

In recent years, there has been a strong demand for self-driving cars. For safe navigation, self-driving cars need both precise localization and robust mapping. While global navigation satellite system (GNSS) can be used to locate vehicles, it has some limitations, such as satellite signal absence (tunnels and caves), which restrict its use in urban scenarios. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) are an excellent solution for identifying a vehicle’s position while at the same time constructing a representation of the environment. SLAM-based visual and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) refer to using cameras and LIDAR as source of external information. This paper presents an implementation of SLAM algorithm for building a map of environment and obtaining car’s trajectory using LIDAR scans. A detailed overview of current visual and LIDAR SLAM approaches has also been provided and discussed. Simulation results referred to LIDAR scans indicate that SLAM is convenient and helpful in localization and mapping.

UAV images were used to generate high resolution digital surface models (DSMs). PIX4D software produced the most accurate DSMs, with errors less than 2 cm compared to ground control points. For areas with repetitive patterns or vegetation, classical photogrammetry algorithms in LPS performed poorer than computer vision approaches in Agisoft and PIX4D. While UAV photogrammetry provides a low-cost method for creating very high resolution datasets of small areas, specialized workstations and accurate ground checks are needed for processing images and assessing accuracy.

Prior to the April earthquake drones were not regulated. Rescue and relief agencies brought their own craft for reconnaissance. Many aerial videos were taken over sensitive heritage sites.

Emphasize on Requirement of Post Earthquake Mapping. Benefits of High Resolution Aerial Mapping in aftermath of disaster. Mapped An Ongoing Reconstruction work.
Monitoring Ongoing Reconstruction Works. During Monsoon Season, Close range Aerial Inspection can also help in Project Progress Monitoring.
