This document discusses using viruses and fungi for microbial control of crop pests. It describes three types of entomopathogenic viruses - nucleopolyhedroviruses, granuloviruses, and cytoplasmic polyhedroviruses - that can infect and kill insect pests. Baculoviruses like nucleopolyhedroviruses and granuloviruses are widely used. Among fungi, Beauveria and Metarhizium species are effective biological control agents. They infect insects through the cuticle and kill them by invading tissues. Both viruses and fungi act slowly, allowing infected insects to continue causing damage initially.
