Teacher's Role in Indian Society
4.4 Sociological determinants of
education –
Teachers' role in strengthening
integrated and cohesive forces.
Sociological determinants of Education
• Communalism
- It determines the national unity, disturbs
emotional balance and puts social
development in peril
• Provincialism
• Social and economic inequality
• Linguism
• unemployment
• Regional imbalances
• Segregation in Educational System
• Irrelevant curriculum
• Lack of social and national integration
• Lack of national and international
consciousness
What can a Teacher do for the
Elimination of Social Evils?
• The teacher should be a bridge between
the community and the educational
institutions
• The teacher’s work does not end with
his teaching in the classroom. He should
work for the social harmony in being a
model for the students and the social
worker for the community
• The teacher should conduct number of
activities to promote national integration and
international understanding
• Teacher should develop national
understanding of and respect for the culture,
traditions and ways of life in different
sections of the nation
• A sense of equality of opportunity in
political, economic and social terms should
be developed in the minds of young children
• The curriculum should be in accordance with
the individual and social needs
• Efforts should be made to check enormous
wastage and stagnation in the form of
money, material, energy and efforts etc
• Most of the Indian parents are illiterate and
backward economically. To solve this
problem, a programme of adult education or
social education should be introduced. The
teacher has a significant role in extending
their services to the masses
• As a member of the society, he should avoid
favoritism in any form. He must be neutral in
dealing with social problems
• Secular, moral and religious teaching by the
teachers will definitely produce good citizens
to the country in future
Teachers in static and changing society
Teachers
Static/stable/rigid society Fluid/changing/dynamic society
Slow changing Changing fast
Children influenced by same
social institutions, customs,
traditions
Changing influences of society
of children
Same type of children attend
schools (similar generations)
Changing generations of
children
Teachers grow wiser by age and
experience
Age bring confusion
