Electrical discharge machining is a non-traditional machining process that removes metal by using a series of electrical discharges between an electrode tool and a workpiece. Small particles of metal are melted and vaporized from the workpiece by the high temperature of the electric sparks. A dielectric fluid is continuously flushed between the tool and workpiece to carry away removed material and prevent overheating. Key factors in EDM include the current, voltage, spark gap distance, material removal rate, taper, and surface finish. It can machine any electrically conductive material regardless of hardness and produce complex, burr-free parts without mechanical contact or heat distortions.

Electrical discharge machining is basically a non-conventional material removal process which is widely used to produce dies, punches and moulds, finishing parts for aerospace and automotive industry, and surgical components. This process can be successfully employed to machine electrically conductive parts irrespective of their hardness, shape and toughness.

Non-traditional manufacturing processes is defined as a group of processes that remove excess material by various techniques involving mechanical, thermal, electrical or chemical energy or combinations of these energies
ELECTROCHEMICAL MACHINING - NON TRADITIONAL MACHININGSajal Tiwari
Non-conventional machining system in which metal is removed by an electrochemical process. Characterized as ‘Reverse Electroplating’ means it removes metal instead of adding it. Normally used for mass production and for hard materials that are difficult to machine using conventional processes. Both external and internal geometries can be machined.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. 2
•Electrical discharge machining, sometimes referred to as spark
machining and disintegrating
•Removing metal by a series of rapidly recurring electrical
discharges between an electrode (the cutting tool) and the
workpiece in the presence of a dielectric fluid.
•Minute particles of metal or chips, generally in the form of
hollow spheres, are removed by melting and vaporization.
are washed from the gap by the dielectric fluid which is
continuously flushed between the tool and workpiece.
•Metal removal in EDM operations takes place as a result of the
generation of extremely high temperature generated by the high
intensity of the discharge current
ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING
8. 8
Dielectric fluids:-
•petroleum based hydrocarbon
•mineral oils
•kerosene
•deionized water
•etc
The function of the dielectric fluid is to serve as a coolant,
conductive medium for spark, preventing oxide layer
formation due to heating and flushing the gap. The best
dielectric fluid is KEROSENE.
ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING
9. 9
The choice of the dielectric has been dictated mainly by the following factors:-
• The dielectric fluid should have sufficient and stable dielectric strength to serve as
insulation between tool and work piece.
• It should deionise rapidly after the spark discharge has taken place.
• It should have low viscosity and wetting capacity.
• It should be chemically neutral so as not to attack the electrode (tool), the table,
the work piece and the working chamber.
• Its flash point must be sufficiently high to avoid any fire hazards.
• It should not emit any toxic vapours or have unpleasant odours.
• Additives are added to inhibit the formation of bubbles and remove the char of
petroleum odor.
ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING
14. 14
Important Process parameters:-
•Current and voltage
•Electrode wear
•Spark gap ~ 0.013-0.13mm
•Material removal rate ~ 16.4mm3/hr to 245cm3/hr
•Taper range 0.005-0.05 mm/cm.
•Surface char ~ 2-4microns to 500 microns
ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING
16. 16
•Any electrically conductive material regardless of its
hardness.
•Machining will be done at hardened stage so heat
treatment distortions are avoided.
•Burr free process
•Thin fragile features machined without deformation.
•Stress free process due to no contact with work.
•Secondary operations are not required
ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING
Advantages:-
17. 17
•slow process.
•Cavities produced are tapered due to dielectric flow.
•Materials have to be electrically conductive.
•Electrodes less than dia70 microns are impractical.
•Slight case hardening will occur this may not be permissible in
some cases.
•Tool wear, which leads to use of two or three tools per
operation, thus results in high tool manufacturing cost.
ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING
Disadvantages:-
