CONSERVATION METHODS
Tube lights
 Power consumption by tube lights
at present(40&36 W) = 61618.19 units/year
 power consumption by 36 W instead of
40 W Tubes = 58047.95 units/year
By using electronic ballast = 40975.22 units/year
Economic Analysis:
Power will save = 20642.97 units/year
Pay back period = 26 months
Cost of savings = Rs.72250/year
*approximately calculated
By day light-A/c rooms
Allow the Daylight
 Power consumption by tube lights at present
= 7371.54 units/year
 Power consumption by tube lights by this method
= 3685.77 units/year
Economic analysis:
Power will save =3685.77units/year
Cost of saving = Rs.12900/year
Street lights-HPSV
Replace HPMV by HPSV
 Power consumption by HPMV = 5246.88 units/year
 Power consumption by HPSV = 2938.25 units/year
Economic analysis:
Power will save = 2308.63 units/year
Cost of saving = Rs.8080/year
*approximately calculated
Street lights
Switch on Even lights after 9 pm
 Power consumption at present(10 no’s) = 5246.88
units/year
 Power consumption by this method (7no’s) = 3672.82
units/year
Economic analysis:
 Power will save =1574.05 units/year
 Cost of saving = Rs.5509/year
*approximately calculated
Name board removal (side)
 Power consumption at present = 5047.95 units/year
 Power consumption after removal = 4460.30 units/year
Economic analysis:
 Power will save = 587.65 units/year
 Cost of saving = Rs.2057/year
*approximately calculated
Solar lightening
 Power consumption by street lights at present =5246 units/yr
 Power consumption by this method =nil
Economic analysis:
 Power will save >=5246.88 units/yr
 Cost of the project =Rs.160000
 Payback period =9 years
 Cost of saving =Rs.18364/yr
*approximately calculated
Solar lightening-future
 Entrance focus
 Garden light
 Portico light
 Clock
Insulation-A/c rooms
 Power consumption at present = 42385.5 units/yr
 Power consumption after insulation=39842.37 units/yr
Economic analysis:
 Power will save =2543.13 units/yr
 Cost of saving =Rs.8901/yr
*approximately calculated
Compressor checking
 Power consumption-reciprocating compressor
=39235.5 units/year
 Power consumption-rotary compressor
=29893.7 units/year
Economic analysis:
 Power will save =9342 units/year
 Cost of savings =Rs.32697/year
Ceiling fan-A/c rooms
 Install ceiling fan in A/c
rooms
 More than 6% of energy
has saved.
Bio gas plant
Used to conserve the usage of wood
 Bio gas plant is very effective one for our
hostel. Because it saves money.
 we construct a small bio gas plant.
 It produces gases equal to three LPG
cylinders for a month.
 Savings per year - Rs.11700
 Pay back period - 9 months
Expand the quantity (future)
Steam cooker
 This steam cooker is used to prepare food by
steam. By this method the time taken for
prepare the food is reduced.
 Another one is number of LPG cylinders and
wood also reduced due to the steam work.
 This is most preferable for our hostel to
reduce the energy bill.
Conservation tips (lights)
 The use of timer switches to switch off lights during
unwanted hours should be considered.
 Replace existing tungsten filament lamps with
compact fluorescent lamps.
 Lamps and luminaries should be cleaned regularly.
Illumination levels fall by 20-30 % due to collection of
dust.
 Lighting should be reduced in non-resident areas.
Conservation tips-A/c
 Turn off heating or cooling when not needed.
 Set Thermostats correctly (Human comfort
conditions).
 Consider replacing old HVAC systems with new
energy-efficient systems.
 Microprocessor based control system may be
developed and adopted to optimize energy use.
Conservation tips (equipments)
 Make awareness and encourage employees/students
to reduce electrical loads in our college.
 When purchasing equipment, purchase “Energy Star”
products.
 Eliminate unnecessary hot plates, and other similar
appliances in our labs & canteen.
 Otherwise turn off the things and machines when not
in use.
Conservation tips (computers)
 LCD monitors consumes less energy
compared to ordinary monitor. So bring LCD
monitors for future use.
 Note that screen savers don’t save the
energy; complex screen savers actually
increase energy use.
 Use the power management features to save
the energy in computer.
 Turnoff computer monitor when not in use
(or) we are away from our desk for more than
5 minutes.
Benefit to users
 Saving in Energy of 8 to 25%.
 Identification of all points of energy loss.
 Reduced cost of maintenance.
 Saving of penalties like power factor penalty etc.
 Fewer breakdowns.
 Formulating strategies of energy and fuel saving.
Conclusion
*approximately calculated
 Conserve power = 45931.08 Units/year
 Conserve amount =Rs.160758/year
 Percentage of units saved per year in electric
bill =16.84%
 Percentage of amount saved per year in
electric bill =12.2%
 Thus, energy audit will help us to make our
unit more energy-efficient, consequently
saving energy and money.
Thank You
