• Classification is the first step after collection and
editing of data.
• It is grouping of related facts into classes.
• It is similar to that of sorting function.
• Eg.1) Sorting letter in post office, like sorting
them on the basis of geographical area.
• Eg.2) Sorting of application forms of the students
appearing for admissions in a college by the
office.

• To condense the mass data in such a manner
that it can be easily apprehended.
• To facilitate comparison.
• To pinpoint the most significant features of the
data at a glance.

7. Qualitative Classification
• Data is classified on the basis of some attribute or quality
For Eg. Color of hair, sex, literacy, religion, etc.
• The type of classification where one class is formed is
known as simple classification.
• The type of classification where two classes are formed
is known as dichotomous classification.
• The type of classification where more than two classes
are formed is known as manifold classification.

8. Quantitative Classification
• Classification of data that can be measured.
For Eg. Height, weight, income, age, etc.
• Elements of quantitative classification.
Frequency Variable
• Frequency distribution refers to data classified on the
bases of variable that can be measured.
• Variable refers to the characteristic that varies in amount
in frequency distribution.

9. Geographical and Chronological
Classification
• Geographical classification – It includes
classification area wise.
For Eg. Cities, districts, states, etc.
• Chronological classification – It includes
classification on the basis of time.
For Eg. Rainfall of a place for years from
the year 2000 to 2005.
