Brickwork
• Components
– Brick
– Cement mortar
• Size of brick
-230x110x70mm
- 190x90x90mm
(IS:2691:1988 Revision 2)
Where brickwork is done?
• Load bearing walls
• Partition walls
• Parapet walls
• Compound walls
• Footing of LB houses
How are bricks made?
Class of brick
L b d
• Class A 215-225 105-110 70-75
– Properly burnt chamber bricks
• Class B 210-220 105-110 60-70
– Country bricks
• (all dimensions are in mm)
Properties of bricks
• Compressive strength- 35kg/sq.cm
• Water absorption < 20%
• Density -1900 kg/m3
• Physical test
– Uniform size, shape and corner
– Metallic sound
– Stable when dropped from 1.2m height
– Uniform red color
– Should be free from flaw, cracks and lumps.
– For every 4000 bricks 6 samples should be
tested.
Typical walls

Masonry walls
• most durable part of any building or
structure.
• provide strength, durability to the
structure
• to control indoor and outdoor
temperature.
• Partition
Masonry walls
1. Load Bearing Masonry Walls 2. Reinforced Masonry Walls
3. Hollow Masonry Walls 4. Composite Masonry Walls
Types of masonry
• Brick masonry
• Cement/fly ash bricks
• Stone masonry
• Random rubble masonry
• Hollow block – 400 mm
x200mmx(150/100/200)mm
• Solid block
• Porotherm block
• Aerocon – 600mmx200mmx(150/100/200)mm

Aerocon block
• Advantages
• very easy to handle
• available in large sizes and hence less no. of joints.
• faster construction on site
• less consumption of cement
• increasing in strength of wall.
• Earthquake resistant
• AAC blocks are made from an inorganic material
which helps to avoid termites, damages or losses.
• Saves steel and concrete due to the reduction in
dead weight.
Some more..
• Increase in floor area due to a reduction in the size
of columns and thickness of the wall.
• Easy to transport on upper floors.
• AAC blocks have a very low thermal conductivity which keeps
interior remain cool in summer and warm in winter.
• One AAC block of size (600 x 200 x 100 mm) is equivalent to 6
bricks hence it reduces 50% of joints resulting in saving of
mortar up to 48%.
• Minimal wastage of AAC blocks.
• It is environment-friendly and also saves water. Hence it is
popularly used as a green product.
• The production cost of AAC Blocks is expensive but on the
whole project cost decrease.

Plastering
objectives
• protect the surface from atmospheric
influences
• to cover the defective workmanship
in masonry
• to conceal porous materials
• to provide a suitable surface for
painting.
Ratio
• Rcc surface- 1:3
• Inner wall - 1:4 or 1:5(12mm)
• Outer wall - 1:5 or 1:6(20 mm)
• only 12mm thk plaster per layer.
• Mixture
PRE-CHECK
• Specification like lime finish, trowel finish,
sponge finish, rough plaster should be
clarified from architect.
• Check aluminum temp. opening
• Brick work should be cured for 7 days.
• Button mark should be fixed –min 12mm
• For composite structure use chicken mesh
or fibre net.(6” on both sides)
• Admixture if needed
• Hacking to be done(25-30 hacks / sft)
procedure
• Keep all the mortar joints
of wall rough, so as to give a good
bonding to hold plaster.
• Wet the surface with cement slurry
• Prepare the mix
– Mix sand with cement
– Add water
Post check
• Curing -7 days , after 24hrs of plaster
• Smoothness of plaster surface
• Level of plaster
• Sharpness of Edges and corners
• Groove and other design work
• Window border
• Window sill
Quantity
• For 1:5 12mm thk
• For 1:3 20 mm thk

Waterproof
• Purpose-
• Done in roof slab,
toilet sunken slab and tank.
• Procedure
• Materials
• chemicals
Pre check
• Check water leakage in mother slab
• Find the leakage point and do
pressure grout(chemical used
rendrock)
• Floor chipping
• Wet the surface
Procedure
• Arrest the corner v-grove(6” inch) with
plaster mix and fiber net + cico1 or cico3
chemical.
• Tapecrete 1st coat – 1:1.5
tapecrete :cement
• After 4hrs – fiber net covering
• Tapecrete 2nd coat – 1:1.5:0.75(sand)
• After 4hrs 3rd coat
• Fix spout outlet.

Some more.. • Increase in floor area due to a reduction in the size of columns and thickness of the wall. • Easy to transport on upper floors. • AAC blocks have a very low thermal conductivity which keeps interior remain cool in summer and warm in winter. • One AAC block of size (600 x 200 x 100 mm) is equivalent to 6 bricks hence it reduces 50% of joints resulting in saving of mortar up to 48%. • Minimal wastage of AAC blocks. • It is environment-friendly and also saves water. Hence it is popularly used as a green product. • The production cost of AAC Blocks is expensive but on the whole project cost decrease.

  • 19. Plastering objectives • protect the surface from atmospheric influences • to cover the defective workmanship in masonry • to conceal porous materials • to provide a suitable surface for painting.
  • 20. Ratio • Rcc surface- 1:3 • Inner wall - 1:4 or 1:5(12mm) • Outer wall - 1:5 or 1:6(20 mm) • only 12mm thk plaster per layer. • Mixture
  • 21. PRE-CHECK • Specification like lime finish, trowel finish, sponge finish, rough plaster should be clarified from architect. • Check aluminum temp. opening • Brick work should be cured for 7 days. • Button mark should be fixed –min 12mm • For composite structure use chicken mesh or fibre net.(6” on both sides) • Admixture if needed • Hacking to be done(25-30 hacks / sft)
  • 22. procedure • Keep all the mortar joints of wall rough, so as to give a good bonding to hold plaster. • Wet the surface with cement slurry • Prepare the mix – Mix sand with cement – Add water
