Certain wavelengths of light can penetrate the atmosphere better than others. These transparent regions are called "atmospheric windows". The figure shows that visible light and radio frequencies experience the least absorption as they travel through the atmosphere. These are the dominant windows. X-rays and UV light face strong absorption, while gamma rays and infrared see somewhat less absorption. Atmospheric windows may refer specifically to the radio, infrared, and visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
