Olmec Art Themes
Diana Meza Tues/Thur 12:30 pm Olmec Sculpture: The First Mesoamerican Art In this article, De la
Fuenta addresses Olmec art, its themes, and the style variations in Olmec art. Olmec traits appear in
several regions and vary in themes. The themes varied from the expression of religion, politics,
society, technology or the economy of a certain group. Cosmogony, myths, and human/ animal
combinations, were some of the themes that were present in Olmec art. One common theme that is
present in many myths fin different cultures is that of the twins. The Olmec not only had different

Because the Aztecs feared that the world was ending, they held rituals and sacrifices to try to prevent
it from happening. According to the article, the Calendar stone suggests a relationship to midnight, the
earth, death, and the center of the world. The center of the Calendar stone was not easily identifiable
as it resembles many other deities like Tonatiuh, Piltzintecuchtli, Xochipilli, Coatlicue, and others.
These other deities had similar characteristics in the way that they looked but the context behind them
did not match the context of the Calendar stone. At first, it was believed that Tonatiuh was the face at
the center but he was a day sky god not a night sky god. There were also similarities among the face at
the center of the Calendar stone and with the god Xochipilli Pilzintecuhtli. Xochipilli Pilzintecuhtli
had similar face painting, arms, and carried a human heart. Although other deities like Tonatiuh were
thought to be the face at the center of the Calendar stone, it was shown that the face is the deity
Yohualtecuhtli who was a god of the earth, dark ness, death, and the south and center of the

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Coming Of Age Analysis

Chbosky is a phenomenal coming of age novel that depicts how Charlie, the introverted protagonist,
develops a new understanding of life. Set in the early 1990s, Charlie narrates his freshmen year of
high school experience through an anonymous series of letters to a stranger. He begins the novel
isolated by his peers and feeling lonely until he is befriended by Sam and Patrick, two seniors who
encourage Charlie to experience new things and life live to its fullest. Charlie is considered to be a

The first symbol is revealed when Sam is speaking to Charlie to truly participate about how it s not
enough to have friends or just be there but that, Charlie really needs to engage with his friends. It s
great that you can listen and be a shoulder to someone, but what about when somebody doesn t need a
shoulder? What if they need arms or something like that? You can t just sit there and put everybody s
lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love. You just can t. You have to do things (Chbosky

shoulder symbolizes his inaction, a stationary anatomy to be leaned on. It symbolizes how Charlie
listens and is always there for his friends but the arm symbolizes how Charlie needs to put himself out
there; give his opinions, speak up and challenge others, be a man of action, be the arms . It
demonstrates how he emotionally grew to become a shoulder but also how he needs to continue to
grow. Undoubtedly, Charlie has become someone who participates in life. This is demonstrated in
Charlie s final letter when he describes his ride through the Fort Pitt tunnel with Sam and Patrick.
Instead of overanalyzing his drive through the tunnel as he did the previous times, Charlie allows

The analysis report found that states that tended to suffer most from the recession had the biggest
declines in births.
The National Center for Health Statistics, in a statement released also stated that there is quite possibly
a connection between the decline in births and the economic downturn of the last couple of years. Two
consecutive years of declines would be consistent with that, given that the nation s economic troubles
are affecting the birth rate.

World History Comparison Essay
World History Comparison
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are three of the most well known and most influential religions in the
world today. There are many similarities among these religions. All three religions originated in the
Middle East tracing their history back to Abraham. Each of these religions believes that there is only
one god therefore they are all considered to be a monotheistic religion. Another important similarity is
the belief that their god created everything and that it is possible to have an individual and personal
relationship with him. ( Christianity and Islam and Judaism: Comparison Chart )

is the creator of all people, the world, and the universe. Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God
and was sent here for our salvation. Christians believe that people are saved and forgiven of their sins
if they confess their sins and confess their belief in the resurrection of Jesus. This process allows
Christians to gain a personal relationship with God. Greater than 2.2 billion supporters of the Christian
religion exist today ( Christianity ). Islam is the most clear. They clearly state that God alone is the

Theme Of Free Will In Notes From Underground By Fyodor...
The critically acclaimed American author, William Faulkner, once said, We must be free not because
we claim freedom, but because we practice it. The concept of free will has been a widely discussed
topic that presents both end of the spectrum to bring forth their own point of views. In Notes from
Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky, the idea of freedom is argued against a deterministic view that
actions and decision are predetermined and can be calculated using advancement of humanity through
present day technology. The debate between the two opposing side will be analyzed through a recount
on the deterministic point of view, an exploration about free will with its connection to the provided
text, and an opinion piece of the matter.
Firstly, the book presents the underground man as an enlightened individual based on his ability to
shrink away from societal norms. His self ostracization from his community allows him to
overanalyze his every thought and actions. This enables him to form his opinion about free will.
During his time, an emphasis is placed upon science and reason. As a symbol of this progress within
society, the crystal palace was then given meaning of the ideal utopia. A place where civilization and
mankind can accomplish anything once it has found all the laws of nature that influence human
behaviour. The underground man argues, What sort of will of one s own can there be if it comes to
tables and arithmetic, and the only thing going is two times two is

The Expansion Of Modernity By Ferdinand T ÓŚ Nnies
Most theorists agree that the expansion of modernity has resulted in the decline in the natural will
based type of community, and has paved the way for less of a need for the Gemeinschaft type of
society and the rise the Gesellschaft association, in which the individuals engage in impersonal and
contractual arrangements, rather than a meaningful, emotionally invested relationship with others.
Modernity is intrinsically disorderly because it encourages individuals to experiment, to hope, to
gamble, and to be ambitious. Its social life lacks the predictability and the certainties that characterize
societies governed by tradition. Individual creativity is exchanged for the security of calculable social
obligations and the sense of belonging that emanate from fixed social bonds (Savage and Warde,
1993, p.150). Essentially, individuals give up a sense of belonging in order to experience what that
have not, and could not in a traditional community. They give up the security of being a part of a
group in order to gain individual creativity.
THEORIES
Ferdinand Tӧnnies is seen as the theorist with the most direct influence over later sociological work
and communities. He wanted to eliminate the spatial contexts and superiority of neither village nor
city life when analyzing communities, in attempt to identify the main features and quality of each way
of life. He coined the terms Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft, which would later be used by one of the
founders of modern sociology, Max

Organic Solidarity By Emile Durkheim
Emile Durkheim was a French famous sociologist, one of the main founders of modern sociology,
mostly known for the way he viewed the structure of society. He mostly focused on how past and
present societies progressed and function. Durkheim s philosophies were based on the thought of
social facts , defined as the norms, values, and the way society is structured. To Durkheim, men are
creatures whose desires are unlimited. Other animals are content when their biological needs are
fulfilled, but humans are different, because they are never satisfied with what they have. Durkheim
says that, The more one has, the more one wants. For Durkheim, a society is not only a group of
individuals living in a particular geographical location. But, society ... Show more content on

In traditional societies, people are independent, hence society has little need for collaboration and
interdependence. Organisations that need collaboration and agreement must frequently alternate to
keep society together. Traditional mechanical solidarity may have a tendency to be controlling and
forced. In modern societies, under organic solidarity, people are automatically much more mutually
dependent. Concentration and the separation of labour requires assistance. Therefore, harmony and
social integration are needed to survive in this world and do not need the same sort of pressure as
under mechanical solidarity. In organic solidarity, the individual is measured extremely important. In
organic solidarity, the individual, becomes the concentration of rights and accountabilities, the main
source of public and private ceremonials holding the society together, a purpose that was once done by
the religion. To show how important this concept is, Durkheim mentioned the cult of the individual.
But, he made it clear that the cult of the individual is a social fact. Respect for the individual is not
something a human can trait, but a social fact that rises in certain societies at some certain

Roxanne Shante s Contribution To The Rise Of Rap
Rap is a genre of music which has been made with many forms of instrumentation such as guitars,
pianos, cellos, violins, drums, as well as recorded sounds and voices which are inserted in the songs.
Over the decades, there have been many influential, successful, talented, and even iconic rappers who
have paved the way for rappers in following generations. However, Rap has become more than just
music that people listen to, it has become a culture of its own that is frequently and closely associated
with drugs and gang violence. Although Rap music has only been around since the 1970 s, the root
form of rap music is thousands of years old and has made rap into what it is today with a foundation
resembling nothing related to rap. Thousands ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, some of these rappers have witnessed the horrendous consequences of substance use and
addiction, and some have even experienced the aftermath of misuse and addiction first hand. Since the
1980 s, rappers have used countless amounts of substance references in their lyrics, praising drugs and
alcohol for their favorable, pain numbing effects. For example, Snoop Dogg has mentioned
intoxication by drugs in many of his songs, including Gin and Juice which contains lyrics about
smoking indo, a slang term for marijuana. Despite the health risks of using marijuana such as
hallucinations and memory loss, rappers continue to promote and pay homage to marijuana and its
benefits. In the 2000 s, Xanax, Ecstasy, and Codeine would become more popular drugs in rap music.
In his song 56 Nights , contemporary rapper Future, claims to have taken 56 Xanax pills in a month.
Ecstasy, also known as Molly and MDMA, which is a synthetic drug that contains mood changing
properties, has also been frequently mentioned in rap lyrics. After the release of Kanye West s hit song
Mercy , which referred to Ecstasy, the National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens website had
experienced an immense increase in the number of searches for the term Molly. Another substance

James Langston Hughes Delusions Of Rivers
A Mention of Rivers
James Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1902 in Joplin Missouri to mother Carie Langston and
father James Hughes. Shortly following his birth, Hughes parents divorced which resulted in him
being raised mainly by his mother, his maternal grandmother and a childless couple named Reed. (
Langston Hughes ) Hughes moved frequently throughout his childhood, traveling to and living in
various states before graduating from high school in Cleveland Ohio. Shortly after graduating from
high school, Hughes took a trip to Mexico to see his father who moved there after he divorced his
wife. While riding on a train on the way to see his father, Hughes crossed over the Mississippi river
and received the inspiration for his first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And then I remembered that I had read about Abraham Lincoln going down the Mississippi as a young
man...He saw human beings bought and sold in the slave market there and he was so horrified by this
that he never forgot it ( Audio on The Negro Speaks of Rivers )
With this knowledge it is easy to see that the bosom [turning] all golden in the sunset symbolizes the
freeing of the slaves after the passing of Abe Lincoln s Emancipation Proclamation and the
metaphorical dawning of a new day that occurred thereafter for the negro people.
As one examines the symbolism of the rivers mentioned in the poem, it becomes easier to see
elements of Hughes style and his efforts to highlight the significance of the black soul . During the
Harlem Renaissance, a time of artistic revival in Harlem, black writers were faced with a dilemma.
Whites celebrated the supposedly primitive (that is, natural, basic, and uncivilized) qualities of black
culture because they were seen as rejuvenating a depleted, over civilized Western culture. (Hardy)
Consequently black writers during this time were faced with the choice of either adopting the
European forms of writing despite their limited access and experiential connection (Hardy) or be
labeled as primitive and simple. In The Negro Speaks of Rivers Hughes, in a way steals the thunder of
this simple stereotype. Through symbolism he shows the long lineage of the black race all the way
back to the Mesopotamian cultures and how it dwarfs any achievements of the United States one
hundred fifty year history.

What is Impression Formation
Introduction Impression formation is an idea formed without consciousness based on little evidence to
evaluate a judgement. The process of forming impression is determined through verbal
communication, non verbal communication and paralinguistic cues. Verbal communication is the
content of what a person says. Non verbal communication is the way we present ourselves without
using spoken language while paralanguage is the way we talk other than spoken words. This research
conducted was experimental. This is because there are two variables identified in this research which
are independent variable (IV) and dependent variable (DV). The IV was the duration of time while the
DV was the result of the First Impression Scale (FIS).The research question is Are the results of the
First Impression Scale affected by the time a person is exposed to the presenter? .Thus, the objective
of this research is to find out whether the time a person is exposed to the video will affect the person s
impression on the presenter. This information could be important to determine how long an
advertisement or a show should last to create a good impression among the audience. The research
hypothesis is the longer a person is exposed to the video, the better the impression formed. The sample
size of this research is small which is 38 psychology students in SAM program of Taylor s College
Subang Jaya. Participants were assigned randomly into two groups, Group 1 and Group 2, to watch a

Barriers In Chinese Cinderella
Every adolescent has struggles and problems that need to be resolved throughout their life, however,
one constant is that their parents are always there for them. Whether they fix the problem themselves,
or help their child through it, the child almost always receives the help they require. A quote from
Mending Wall by Robert Frost helps describe what it is like when the parents are not there for the
child. Something there is that doesn t love a wall, that sends the frozen ground swell under it, and
spills the upper boulders in the sun; and makes gaps even two can pass abreast (1). In this instance, the
child is the wall, and the parent is the person that does not love it. Slowly, the child will break apart,
and eventually collapse without the affection and support they need. In Chinese Cinderella by Adeline
Yen Mah, this is one of the few unfortunate exceptions where the child doesn t acquire assistance from
any parent. Adeline had many occurrences within her community that changed her mentality, one
being that her self esteem declined, and made her feel like she needs to prove herself worthy, no
matter the circumstance. Adeline s step mother, Niang, never fails to be uncouth towards her, not just
by damaging her self esteem, but also through verbal and physical abuse (whipping, hitting, etc.). I
approached her gingerly, trembling with terror. She slapped my face so hard I almost fell... ...she
slapped me with the back of her hand against my other cheek (Mah 114 115).

Career Development and Life Planning
Final Reflection
Signing up for Career Development was one of the best choices I made this semester (probably the
only one). Not only was this class informational and productive, I was able to gain a different outlook
on why I am in school. The book that we read in class, You Majored in What also helped me to
confirm why I choose the major that I am taking now. I learned things from Chaos theory to how to
succeed in an interview. The class taught me viable life lessons and helped prepared me to face real
world situations in my career.
In college, you decide what you would like to major in. After choosing a major, you take the classes
needed and hopefully get a degree right? Wrong. One day you may wake up and ask yourself is this
what you want to do for the rest of your life? This is the part you go to your counselor and change
your major. It may even come to a point where you may not even use the degree that you spent all
those years in school for in the job you have. Bottom line is life is not linear. You might major in
Biology and hope to be a Doctor but end up working for the government. This is what Chaos theory is.
Just like meteorologist predicts the weather, we as humans try to predict where we will be 5 10 years
down the line. But as we see changes on our path, we begin to assess the situation differently and
adapt to those changes. As a computer science major, I plan on working for either

My Studio Project And The Oslo Opera House
he idea of being able to walk on top of the building is something that does not happen a lot.
Connecting the public to the building should be more than just creating a fascinating and interesting
facade. My idea is to describe how a building is able to connect to people, by allowing them to not just
walk inside or around but on top of the building creating a public space. The reason why I chose this
topic is that I wanted to make a connection to my studio project, and how I developed the idea for it.
In addition, I wanted to compare it to the Oslo Opera House and how this assisted me in arriving at my
final design. My studio project and the Oslo Opera House have a different scale however, I think they
share some similar concepts. The idea of togetherness, open space, and easy movement access to the
public, and most significantly its connection to the landscape.
Firstly, the location of the buildings is disparate, the Oslo Opera House does not really have a
connection to the landscape, since it is mostly part of the city surrounded by other buildings and where
traffic is heavy. There might be some connection between the Oslo Opera House and the landscape of
the river, which has influenced the design known as The Wave Wll . My project studio (picture 2) has
a huge connection to the landscape, which allowed me to work around the landscape instead of being
surrounded by buildings. The location of my building is in Beacon, NY, around Main St. behind some
trees and in front of a

Raw Diet Research Paper
Raw Diet? raw diet is a diet based on eating whole, live, uncooked and un processed foods as a large
percentage, about 75% or more, of your diet. The theory is when your diet is 75% raw your body s
eliminate all or most of the toxins in the cooked portion of your diet, and when you eat more cooked
food the body can not eliminate all the toxins and they back up causing disease. It is believed heating
food above 118 degrees F destroy enzymes in food that can destroy digestion. Cooking is known to

a measure of acidity and alkalinity of a solution that is a number on a scale on which a value of 7
represents neutrality and lower numbers indicate increasing acidity and higher numbers increasing

Marc Lewis Reflection
Critical Thinking Assignment #3 Since I have been reading the life of Marc Lewis I find myself
always becoming more and more excited about what is going to happen next. So far it has been filled
with ups and down and me trying to predict what will happen next on his journey. While reading
chapter 6 I was so elated that Marc had gotten accepted to college, it seems as though he actually has a
plan for himself and is determined to exceed every goal. But normally good things don t always last
for a time and for some reason I could sense that something was about to happen. For those of us who
were not given the opportunity to have a silver spoon in their mouth or even those who had the spoon
but chose not to use it acquire a different meaning in life. Growing up I lived in the projects, with drug
dealers and snotty nosed kids who only aspiration when they grew up was to get out of the projects.
Thankfully at a young age I was adopted by my grandparents and just like Marc Lewis a new door
opened and I was finally given a chance at life itself. I truly believe that when people are presented
with things that inspire them to do better or be better then they will change their attitude on
everything. They begin to create dreams of being successful, studious and eventually become so set in
their goals that even when things go bad they choose not to focus on them because of the complete
turnaround they just achieved. Although marc seemed to be doing great I could tell that he didn t want
to do the complete turnaround, I say this because he was still smoking hash, it was evident that it had
become apart of his new lifestyle whether he actually wanted it to or not. He began to put a phosaude,
almost like when you re high around your parents and try to act as normal as possible. He said that the
trick is to balance anxiety and ecstasy and in all honesty I had no clue to what he was trying to say.
The psychedelic drugs caused his thoughts to go from normal thoughts like what he wanted to eat or
buy and would quickly change to his possible enemies such as customers, children and President
Ronald Reagan. Psychedelic drugs cause people to hallucinate and become in and out of
consciousness. I know a few people who have

The United States Involvement in the Korean War
Communism has been a global problem for decades, and has caused a wide array of issues. The Soviet
Union and China were the main Communist threats post World War II. The Soviets were the biggest
threat, without their influence, China would not have become a Communist nation. North Korea was
supported by the Soviet Union after the Japanese lost World War II. They adopted a Communist
government called the Democratic People s Republic of Korea and was ruled under Kim Il sung.
North Korea invaded South Korea, an authoritarian country, which drew involvement from the United
States, and in general, the United Nations. US involvement in Korea is debatebly because of the rising
threat of global Communism and the attempt of North Korea taking South Korea.
North and South Korea hosted a raging battle that involved a lot more than just the two countries.
North Korea before 1950 was occupied by Japanese imperialists. After the Japanese lost World War II,
The Soviet Union occupied the region north of the 38th parallel. They underwent a Communist
government called the Democratic People s Republic of Korea (North Korea Wikipedia.org 5). In June
of 1950, the poorly influenced North Korea invaded the 38th parallel into the south, starting the
Korean War. By July, the United States had become involved on the south s behalf. Although it was to
prevent one country from imperializing another, the war was more generally seen by the United States
as a war of international Communism. One of their

Listening For A Recording Of An Opera
Listening to a recording of an opera is an altogether different beast, than seeing one in person. While
you can get a sense of the music and the style behind a piece from a recording, there is something
special about hearing it performed in person. Feeling the vibrations of the voices and orchestra,
observing the characters moving on stage, the variable highs and lows of every different performance;
all combine to form an experience vastly more complex and nuanced than simply listening to a
recording. The opera I saw was Verdi s Falstaff, as performed by the UW Madison University Opera,
on Sunday, November 13th. Falstaff is the last opera Verdi wrote and his interpretation of a
Shakespearean comedy. Originally set in the 1400s, this production of Falstaff was reimagined by
director David Ronis and dramaturg Steffen Silvis in 1930s Hollywood. It is the goal of this recreation
to make the opera more relatable and interesting for a more modern audience. This review will cover
how the performance did and did not meet my expectations, along with how resetting of the opera in
the 1930s worked in my eyes.
Falstaff was performed in the UW Music Hall, A small, unremarkable building near the base of
Bascom Hill that I have passed hundreds of times but never payed much attention to. When I use to
think of an opera theater, the picture I had in mind was a giant, gilded arena for the high end of
society. Even after learning the truth of early opera theatres build, the image persists.

Fuzzy Multi Objective Particle Swarm Optimization
This approach propose a fuzzy multi objective particle swarm optimization (FMOPSO) for solving
TCQT problem. The parameters of cost, time and quality are defined by fuzzy numbers and a fuzzy
multi attribute utility procedure is used with limits of fuzzy arithmetic operation to adopt and evaluate
the selected construction methods. The proposed method is justified and implemented through
computational analyses.
The above method suggests optimal combination of construction method with the large fuzzy
composite utility by the means of particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique will be searched out.
The fuzzy multiple attribute required function governed by constrained fuzzy operations will be added
with the PSO method.
The framework of the fuzzy multi objective particle swarm optimization (FMOPSO) for solving the
fuzzy TCQT problem will be presented. The PSO simulates a social behavior scenario such as bird
flocking to certain position. A particle is assigned attributes of velocity and position and defined as a
point in multi dimensional space. The particle position depicts a candidate solution to the task at hand.
A swarm of particles (birds) fly toward an optimal defined position according to the evolving method
that utilizes the best experience (or position) of a particle (called local best) and the best experience
(or position) ever identified by any particle (called global best). To show how effective is the proposed

Dreamers Dream On Essay
Let the Dreamers Dream On How would you feel if someone promised you something, but then
changed their mind? If you were told you were safe, but the rug was pulled out from under you? Over
a half million teenagers and young adults who illegally immigrated to the United States as minors
were recently confronted with this reality. DACA, an act passed during Obama s term that protected
them from deportation, was rescinded by the Trump administration on September 5, 2017. After these
people, known as Dreamers, had begun to come out of hiding to legally obtain jobs, attend college,
and live without fear of deportation, this rescission suddenly suspended their dreams. Now their future
is in the hands of Congress. Although many people would like to eject this group, statistics are in
favor of their continuing residence. The Dreamers comprise a diverse and valuable group that deserves

Power of Choice in Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange Essay
The choice between good and evil is a decision every man must make
throughout his life in order to guide his actions and control his future.
This element of choice, no matter what the outcome, displays man s power as
an individual. Any efforts to control or influence this choice between
good and evil will in turn govern man s free will and enslave him. In the
novel A Clockwork Orange, the author uses symbolism through imagery, the
characterization of Alex, and the first person narrative point of view to
prove that without the ability to choose between good and evil, Man becomes
a slave.

his abuse of choice. His love for violence symbolises his abuse of power
as an evil trait, but his love for music symbolises his human side. In the
end of the story Alex decides that he is ready to become a man. During
this rapid evolution from adolescence to manhood, Alex chooses a wife, a
family, a life, and in essence he chooses good for the first time in the
story. There was your humble narrator . . . I knew what was happening, O

good and still maintain a strong element of choice. He becomes stronger
because he now has a broader selection to choose from. He sees that the
abuse of the ability of choice is not what makes Man powerful. It is
instead, the realization that the choice between good and evil, no matter
what decision, is the power within Man.
Using the characterization of Alex, it effectively illustrates how
the element of choice is linked to the power within man. The author uses
violence to represent the abuse of power when the right

Book Report on Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals by Kant
Kant states (38,) act as if the maxim of thy action were to become by thy will a universal law of nature
. This categorical imperative forms the basis of his book, Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics
of Morals. Though at times his writing is confusing Kant lays out his logic as to what a categorical
imperative is. Kant divides the book into three sections. The first explains the transition from everyday
moral beliefs to the philosophy of those morals. The transition from popular moral philosophy to the
metaphysics of morals is explained in Section II. Kant ends the book explaining how the metaphysics
of morals is seen in everyday moral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kant provides two reasons to study the metaphysics of morals. First, to understand a priori morals we
must investigate their course. Second, morals may be corrupted if we fail to understand and estimate
them correctly. Section 1 begins with the idea that the only thing absolutely good is a good will (11).
According to Kant acts of courage and perseverance can be negative if a dubious idea is driving them.
Kant uses Duty as an example of good will but provides three qualifications. For an action to have
moral worth it must be done from duty. He is careful to distinguish three forms of duty; from duty ,
conforming to duty and as duty requires (15). A morally good action is not based on anything or done
out of want for any object or inclination. It is performed simply because it is. For example, a man
rescues a cat from a tree because he knows there is a reward offered. The man performs the act for a
monetary purpose. An act driven by any possible reaction can not be based on good will . Good will is
good in itself (12). In Section II Kant provides an in depth explanation of what a categorical
imperative is. He first defines an imperative as a command that is obligatory for a will (30). In other
words it is something we ought to do. He goes on to differentiate the two kinds of imperatives,
hypothetical and imperative. An action based on a hypothetical imperative is done for the result while

However, proponents argue that the new telecommunication technologies are the electronic highways
of the informational age, equivalent to the role played by railway systems in the process of
industrialization (Henderson and Castells 1987:6 as cited by Dicken 2007:83) implying that IT indeed
is in the process of reaching maturity but that there are still gaps where the advances in IT have not
been exploited fully. The time space convergence process is geographically uneven (Dicken, 2007:83)
since two thirds of all registered domain names are in just three countries (US, Germany, UK).
Therefore IT services are far from being globally available which implies that even if IT based

Maximilien Robespierre And The French Revolution
The French Revolution was a time of civil war in France that was filled with the shed blood of many
for one cause, to create a democratic government. An important figure that dominated the Committee
of Public Safety, a political body that took control of France during the Reign of Terror, was a man
named Maximilien Robespierre.
Robespierre was born the son of a lawyer in Arras, France on May 6, 1758, but during Maximilien s
childhood his siblings and him were raised by their maternal grandparents because Robespierre s
mother s death brought extreme sadness to his father, which resulted in his absence in his children s
life. In 1765, he attended the college of the Oratorians, and four years later he received the scholarship
to attend the most famous college at the time called Louis le Grand in Paris. It was at this
distinguished college that Robespierre found himself fascinated with philosophy and law, and
Maximilien was given his law degree in 1781. Not long after he became a lawyers at Arras, his
childhood city.
Maximilien Robespierre was soon a well known name in the world of legal actions and lawyers, so he
was appointed to be a judge at the Salle Episcopale, which gave him a very profitable income.
Robespierre was now known as a wealthy man of France, and this plays an important part in his role
in the French Revolution. Soon he was admitted into the Arras Academy becoming its chancellor and
later the president.

Comparing Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher and Taylor’s...
Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher and Peter Taylor s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time
Various authors develop their stories using gothic themes and characterizations of this type to lay the
foundation for their desired reader response. Although Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of
Usher and Peter Taylor s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time are two completely different narratives, both
of these stories share a commonality of gothic text representations. The stories take slightly different
paths, with Poe s signifying traditional gothic literature and Taylor approaching his story in a more
contemporary manner. Gothic texts are typically characterized by a horrifying and haunting mood, in a

Just as in Poe s, this story places significance upon the appearance of the house and its surroundings.
The Dorsets host parties for each generation of children in their neighborhood. Enhancing further the
evidence of gothic style found in Taylor s story, the parents curiosity is overcome by a feeling of
horror concerning the types of events that unfold during those parties. The parties also act as points of
isolation for the children and the Dorsets. Except for the people who attend the party, no one knew the
explanation or the necessity for the annual event. The presence of curiosity and secrecy help to
support the gothic basis for this story. The grotesque and incestuous relationship that the Dorsets
sustain functions as another gothic element in the text. One of the definite obscurities in the Dorsets
house would be the hanging of various pictures, specifically Bronzino s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time
. It is a tiny color print and described as simply being tacked on the wall, and obviously been torn
from a book or magazine (Taylor, 765). The picture could be interpreted as a family interacting and
behaving immorally, further enhancing the notion that the Dorsets do not just have a sibling
relationship but rather a more intimate connection. This print acted as a focal point of the house and
further detailed the Dorsets incestuous relationship. In the end, the Dorsets are overcome by their

A Bleak Day By Werner Herzog
It s a gloomy day, the sky is a shade of gray, but no rain is falling. The air feels dry, sticky and hot.
The young girl is taking a journey to a jungle, a place she normally doesn t observe, a place where
humans and animals inhabit. She trudges her way to the centermost oak tree near Mason Hall. It s the
perfect spot: dry ground, a slight breeze, and shade from heat. On her way, she passes the boy from
her psychology class, she neglects to give him a smile. The Diag seems unfriendly today, but she sits
down anyways. She pulls out her shiny silver laptop from her overflowing backpack. She starts to read
her homework assignment, Werner Herzog s Conquest of the Useless, for her freshman year English
class. She young girl dives her way into the reading, she starts to think about where she is, what is
going on around her, and the journey that she is on. Suddenly, a bushy red squirrel approaches the
young girl. She s puzzled as to why the squirrel is advancing towards her. So, she quickly gets up to
escape the bushy animal s presence. As the girl moves from the tree the Diag starts to appear
differently and the girl begins to notice specific details she hasn t before.
First, think about human beings. Second, think about animals. Do they usually interact? Do animals
and humans go through similar journeys? There are many thoughts that come to mind when humans

Olympic Housing Issues
Along with the money that must be spent on these new facilities, there must also be land for them to
reside on. Because new land cannot be created, scarcity again comes into effect. This is made apparent
through the real estate market. Often times, these Olympic construction projects take the space of what
would be housing developments or other building projects. This can cause rents to rise in the city and
its surrounding areas. These cities are also likely to experience the effects of crowding out (The
Economic Impact 19). Because there is an abundance of people flooding the area and limited space in
hotels for them to stay, hotel prices skyrocket. This causes many of the people who would normally

In some cases, citizens of the host city are very opposed to certain aspects of facilities that are built to
house the Games. For example, in the Sydney Olympics, the citizens held a very hostile attitude
toward the construction of the Bondi Beach Volleyball Stadium. They argued that the development of
that facility would close off a popular surfing beach for six months causing them an inconvenience.
The people of Sydney also thought that putting an arena on this stretch of beach might cause
environmental problems (Cashman 6). The recent Rio Olympics especially stirred up some
controversy. The developers of these games built a golf course in a natural reserve, evicted hundreds
of families to make way for infrastructure, and even built their press center on a slave burial ground
(Coston). These actions are all violations of universal ethical and moral principles. As Catholics, we
know that it is our job to care for the environment. When the maker s of the Rio Games, Sydney
Game, and any other Games for that matter, build a facility that disrupts a natural reserve or natural
habitat of animals, it breaks that teaching. We also know that each and every person is made in God s
image and therefore deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. The people that were evicted from
their homes or dug up from their graves to allow development were not given that dignity that they
deserve. Along with development, the initial bidding process also brings up ethics issues. When a
country enters into the bidding process to try to obtain the rights for hosting the Games, local
communities often end up being motivated and run by private business interests. This leads to the
interests of the citizens of the city not being properly represented. It also leads to the city spending
billions of dollars just to have a chance to host the Games, which they may

Sylvia Getm Improving Presentation Skills
Information can be shared and communicated in a variety of ways. Public speaking and formal
presentations are common methods of communication that any leader will need to master regardless of
their profession. There are times when it can be difficult to stay away during a presentation. However,
a dynamic speaker can keep the audience engaged and interested in the information being shared.
Improving presentation style is achievable with the right amount of planning, organizing, and by
getting to know your audience. Observing other presenters is another great way to improve personal
presentation skills.
Sylvia Getman, former Chief Executive Officer at The Aroostook Medical Center, is a fantastic public
speaker and a person worth emulating. There are many positive attributes that make Sylvia a great
speaker. She is a great story teller with a talent for personalizing the material in a way that unites her

Government Conspiracy Theory
Government or Controlled Demolition The September 11 attacks were a series of four coordinated
terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al Qaeda in the United States on the morning of
Tuesday, September 11, 2001. They attacked the Twin Towers in New York City. There are different
conspiracy theories with the 9/11 attack but the most important conspiracy theory is that the collapse
of the twin towers were the result of controlled demolition by the government rather than structural
failure due to impact and fire. Now the question remains, was it controlled demolition or was it
terrorist attacking the World Trade Center on purpose? This conspiracy theory revolves around
authorities knowing about the attackers and also guiding them to complete their terror attack. None of
the deaths would have happened without the deliberate unplugging of Americas air defense. The twin
tower did not fall of plane impacts or fire. People claim that jet fuel doesn t melt steel beams. It was a
controlled explosion by the government. Our mission is to expose the official lies in a way that
inspires the people to overcome denial and understand the truth. People want answers to what
happened that morning, devastation all around. Conspiracy theorists believe that the government
dismissed all the signs that were in their face because this attack was a controlled demolition. Dr.

Because the Aztecs feared that the world was ending, they held rituals and sacrifices to try to prevent it from happening. According to the article, the Calendar stone suggests a relationship to midnight, the earth, death, and the center of the world. The center of the Calendar stone was not easily identifiable as it resembles many other deities like Tonatiuh, Piltzintecuchtli, Xochipilli, Coatlicue, and others. These other deities had similar characteristics in the way that they looked but the context behind them did not match the context of the Calendar stone. At first, it was believed that Tonatiuh was the face at the center but he was a day sky god not a night sky god. There were also similarities among the face at the center of the Calendar stone and with the god Xochipilli Pilzintecuhtli. Xochipilli Pilzintecuhtli had similar face painting, arms, and carried a human heart. Although other deities like Tonatiuh were thought to be the face at the center of the Calendar stone, it was shown that the face is the deity Yohualtecuhtli who was a god of the earth, dark ness, death, and the south and center of the ... (Carroll Lewis) The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a phenomenal coming of age novel that depicts how Charlie, the introverted protagonist, develops a new understanding of life. Set in the early 1990s, Charlie narrates his freshmen year of high school experience through an anonymous series of letters to a stranger. The first symbol is revealed when Sam is speaking to Charlie to truly participate about how it s not enough to have friends or just be there but that, Charlie really needs to engage with his friends. It s great that you can listen and be a shoulder to someone, but what about when somebody doesn t need a shoulder? What if they need arms or something like that? You can t just sit there and put everybody s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love. You just can t. You have to do things (Chbosky 200). In other words, Sam uses a shoulder to represent Charlie s passivity and wallflower status. The shoulder symbolizes his inaction, a stationary anatomy to be leaned on. It symbolizes how Charlie listens and is always there for his friends but the arm symbolizes how Charlie needs to put himself out there; give his opinions, speak up and challenge others, be a man of action, be the arms . It demonstrates how he emotionally grew to become a shoulder but also how he needs to continue to grow. Undoubtedly, Charlie has become someone who participates in life. This is demonstrated in Charlie s final letter when he describes his ride through the Fort Pitt tunnel with Sam and Patrick. Instead of overanalyzing his drive through the tunnel as he did the previous times, Charlie allows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The critically acclaimed American author, William Faulkner, once said, We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it. The concept of free will has been a widely discussed topic that presents both end of the spectrum to bring forth their own point of views. In Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky, the idea of freedom is argued against a deterministic view that actions and decision are predetermined and can be calculated using advancement of humanity through present day technology. The debate between the two opposing side will be analyzed through a recount on the deterministic point of view, an exploration about free will with its connection to the provided text, and an opinion piece of the matter. Firstly, the book presents the underground man as an enlightened individual based on his ability to shrink away from societal norms. His self ostracization from his community allows him to overanalyze his every thought and actions. This enables him to form his opinion about free will. During his time, an emphasis is placed upon science and reason. As a symbol of this progress within society, the crystal palace was then given meaning of the ideal utopia. • 8. The Expansion Of Modernity By Ferdinand T ÓŚ Nnies Most theorists agree that the expansion of modernity has resulted in the decline in the natural will based type of community, and has paved the way for less of a need for the Gemeinschaft type of society and the rise the Gesellschaft association, in which the individuals engage in impersonal and contractual arrangements, rather than a meaningful, emotionally invested relationship with others. Modernity is intrinsically disorderly because it encourages individuals to experiment, to hope, to gamble, and to be ambitious. Its social life lacks the predictability and the certainties that characterize societies governed by tradition. Individual creativity is exchanged for the security of calculable social obligations and the sense of belonging that emanate from fixed social bonds (Savage and Warde, 1993, p.150). Essentially, individuals give up a sense of belonging in order to experience what that have not, and could not in a traditional community. They give up the security of being a part of a group in order to gain individual creativity. THEORIES Ferdinand Tӧnnies is seen as the theorist with the most direct influence over later sociological work and communities. He wanted to eliminate the spatial contexts and superiority of neither village nor city life when analyzing communities, in attempt to identify the main features and quality of each way of life. He coined the terms Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft, which would later be used by one of the founders of modern sociology, Max ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Organic Solidarity By Emile Durkheim Emile Durkheim was a French famous sociologist, one of the main founders of modern sociology, mostly known for the way he viewed the structure of society. He mostly focused on how past and present societies progressed and function. Durkheim s philosophies were based on the thought of social facts , defined as the norms, values, and the way society is structured. To Durkheim, men are creatures whose desires are unlimited. Other animals are content when their biological needs are fulfilled, but humans are different, because they are never satisfied with what they have. Therefore, harmony and social integration are needed to survive in this world and do not need the same sort of pressure as under mechanical solidarity. In organic solidarity, the individual is measured extremely important. In organic solidarity, the individual, becomes the concentration of rights and accountabilities, the main source of public and private ceremonials holding the society together, a purpose that was once done by the religion. As one examines the symbolism of the rivers mentioned in the poem, it becomes easier to see elements of Hughes style and his efforts to highlight the significance of the black soul . During the Harlem Renaissance, a time of artistic revival in Harlem, black writers were faced with a dilemma. Whites celebrated the supposedly primitive (that is, natural, basic, and uncivilized) qualities of black culture because they were seen as rejuvenating a depleted, over civilized Western culture. (Hardy) Consequently black writers during this time were faced with the choice of either adopting the European forms of writing despite their limited access and experiential connection (Hardy) or be labeled as primitive and simple. In The Negro Speaks of Rivers Hughes, in a way steals the thunder of this simple stereotype. Through symbolism he shows the long lineage of the black race all the way back to the Mesopotamian cultures and how it dwarfs any achievements of the United States one hundred fifty year history. ... The process of forming impression is determined through verbal communication, non verbal communication and paralinguistic cues. Verbal communication is the content of what a person says. Non verbal communication is the way we present ourselves without using spoken language while paralanguage is the way we talk other than spoken words. This research conducted was experimental. This is because there are two variables identified in this research which are independent variable (IV) and dependent variable (DV). The IV was the duration of time while the DV was the result of the First Impression Scale (FIS).The research question is Are the results of the First Impression Scale affected by the time a person is exposed to the presenter? .Thus, the objective of this research is to find out whether the time a person is exposed to the video will affect the person s impression on the presenter. This information could be important to determine how long an advertisement or a show should last to create a good impression among the audience. The research hypothesis is the longer a person is exposed to the video, the better the impression formed. Barriers In Chinese Cinderella Every adolescent has struggles and problems that need to be resolved throughout their life, however, one constant is that their parents are always there for them. Whether they fix the problem themselves, or help their child through it, the child almost always receives the help they require. A quote from Mending Wall by Robert Frost helps describe what it is like when the parents are not there for the child. Something there is that doesn t love a wall, that sends the frozen ground swell under it, and spills the upper boulders in the sun; and makes gaps even two can pass abreast (1). In this instance, the child is the wall, and the parent is the person that does not love it. Slowly, the child will break apart, and eventually collapse without the affection and support they need. In Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, this is one of the few unfortunate exceptions where the child doesn t acquire assistance from any parent. Adeline had many occurrences within her community that changed her mentality, one being that her self esteem declined, and made her feel like she needs to prove herself worthy, no matter the circumstance. The class taught me viable life lessons and helped prepared me to face real world situations in my career. In college, you decide what you would like to major in. Connecting the public to the building should be more than just creating a fascinating and interesting facade. My idea is to describe how a building is able to connect to people, by allowing them to not just walk inside or around but on top of the building creating a public space. The reason why I chose this topic is that I wanted to make a connection to my studio project, and how I developed the idea for it. In addition, I wanted to compare it to the Oslo Opera House and how this assisted me in arriving at my final design. My studio project and the Oslo Opera House have a different scale however, I think they share some similar concepts. The idea of togetherness, open space, and easy movement access to the public, and most significantly its connection to the landscape. Firstly, the location of the buildings is disparate, the Oslo Opera House does not really have a connection to the landscape, since it is mostly part of the city surrounded by other buildings and where traffic is heavy. There might be some connection between the Oslo Opera House and the landscape of the river, which has influenced the design known as The Wave Wll . So far it has been filled with ups and down and me trying to predict what will happen next on his journey. While reading chapter 6 I was so elated that Marc had gotten accepted to college, it seems as though he actually has a plan for himself and is determined to exceed every goal. But normally good things don t always last for a time and for some reason I could sense that something was about to happen. For those of us who were not given the opportunity to have a silver spoon in their mouth or even those who had the spoon but chose not to use it acquire a different meaning in life. Growing up I lived in the projects, with drug dealers and snotty nosed kids who only aspiration when they grew up was to get out of the projects. Thankfully at a young age I was adopted by my grandparents and just like Marc Lewis a new door opened and I was finally given a chance at life itself. I truly believe that when people are presented with things that inspire them to do better or be better then they will change their attitude on everything. They begin to create dreams of being successful, studious and eventually become so set in their goals that even when things go bad they choose not to focus on them because of the complete turnaround they just achieved. Although marc seemed to be doing great I could tell that he didn t want to do the complete turnaround, I say this because he was still smoking hash, it was evident that it had become apart of his new lifestyle whether he actually wanted it to or not. • 31. Book Report on Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of... Book Report on Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals by Kant Kant states (38,) act as if the maxim of thy action were to become by thy will a universal law of nature . This categorical imperative forms the basis of his book, Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals. Though at times his writing is confusing Kant lays out his logic as to what a categorical imperative is. Kant divides the book into three sections. The first explains the transition from everyday moral beliefs to the philosophy of those morals. The transition from popular moral philosophy to the metaphysics of morals is explained in Section II. Kant ends the book explaining how the metaphysics of morals is seen in everyday moral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kant provides two reasons to study the metaphysics of morals. First, to understand a priori morals we must investigate their course. Second, morals may be corrupted if we fail to understand and estimate them correctly. Section 1 begins with the idea that the only thing absolutely good is a good will (11). According to Kant acts of courage and perseverance can be negative if a dubious idea is driving them. Kant uses Duty as an example of good will but provides three qualifications. For an action to have moral worth it must be done from duty. He is careful to distinguish three forms of duty; from duty , conforming to duty and as duty requires (15). A morally good action is not based on anything or done out of want for any object or inclination. It is performed simply because it is. For example, a man rescues a cat from a tree because he knows there is a reward offered. The man performs the act for a monetary purpose. An act driven by any possible reaction can not be based on good will . Good will is good in itself (12). In Section II Kant provides an in depth explanation of what a categorical imperative is. He first defines an imperative as a command that is obligatory for a will (30). In other words it is something we ought to do. He goes on to differentiate the two kinds of imperatives, hypothetical and imperative. An action based on a hypothetical imperative is done for the result while a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The time space convergence process is geographically uneven (Dicken, 2007:83) since two thirds of all registered domain names are in just three countries (US, Germany, UK). Therefore IT services are far from being globally available which implies that even if IT based solutions are reaching homogeneity in developed parts of the world, for underdeveloped ones IT can still be looked upon as a source of competitive advantage if implemented adequately. Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher and Peter Taylor s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time Various authors develop their stories using gothic themes and characterizations of this type to lay the foundation for their desired reader response. Although Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher and Peter Taylor s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time are two completely different narratives, both of these stories share a commonality of gothic text representations. The stories take slightly different paths, with Poe s signifying traditional gothic literature and Taylor approaching his story in a more contemporary manner. Just as in Poe s, this story places significance upon the appearance of the house and its surroundings. The Dorsets host parties for each generation of children in their neighborhood. Enhancing further the evidence of gothic style found in Taylor s story, the parents curiosity is overcome by a feeling of horror concerning the types of events that unfold during those parties. The parties also act as points of isolation for the children and the Dorsets. Except for the people who attend the party, no one knew the explanation or the necessity for the annual event. The presence of curiosity and secrecy help to support the gothic basis for this story. The grotesque and incestuous relationship that the Dorsets sustain functions as another gothic element in the text. One of the definite obscurities in the Dorsets house would be the hanging of various pictures, specifically Bronzino s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time . It is a tiny color print and described as simply being tacked on the wall, and obviously been torn from a book or magazine (Taylor, 765). The picture could be interpreted as a family interacting and behaving immorally, further enhancing the notion that the Dorsets do not just have a sibling relationship but rather a more intimate connection. This print acted as a focal point of the house and further detailed the Dorsets incestuous relationship. In the end, the Dorsets are overcome by their monstrous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Olympic Housing Issues Along with the money that must be spent on these new facilities, there must also be land for them to reside on. Because new land cannot be created, scarcity again comes into effect. This is made apparent through the real estate market. Often times, these Olympic construction projects take the space of what would be housing developments or other building projects. This can cause rents to rise in the city and its surrounding areas. These cities are also likely to experience the effects of crowding out (The Economic Impact 19). Because there is an abundance of people flooding the area and limited space in hotels for them to stay, hotel prices skyrocket. This causes many of the people who would normally come visit the country without the games ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In some cases, citizens of the host city are very opposed to certain aspects of facilities that are built to house the Games. For example, in the Sydney Olympics, the citizens held a very hostile attitude toward the construction of the Bondi Beach Volleyball Stadium. They argued that the development of that facility would close off a popular surfing beach for six months causing them an inconvenience. The people of Sydney also thought that putting an arena on this stretch of beach might cause environmental problems (Cashman 6). The recent Rio Olympics especially stirred up some controversy. The developers of these games built a golf course in a natural reserve, evicted hundreds of families to make way for infrastructure, and even built their press center on a slave burial ground (Coston). These actions are all violations of universal ethical and moral principles. As Catholics, we know that it is our job to care for the environment. When the maker s of the Rio Games, Sydney Game, and any other Games for that matter, build a facility that disrupts a natural reserve or natural habitat of animals, it breaks that teaching. We also know that each and every person is made in God s image and therefore deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. The people that were evicted from their homes or dug up from their graves to allow development were not given that dignity that they deserve. Along with development, the initial bidding process also brings up ethics issues. When a country enters into the bidding process to try to obtain the rights for hosting the Games, local communities often end up being motivated and run by private business interests. This leads to the interests of the citizens of the city not being properly represented. It also leads to the city spending billions of dollars just to have a chance to host the Games, which they may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Government Conspiracy Theory Government or Controlled Demolition The September 11 attacks were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al Qaeda in the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. They attacked the Twin Towers in New York City. There are different conspiracy theories with the 9/11 attack but the most important conspiracy theory is that the collapse of the twin towers were the result of controlled demolition by the government rather than structural failure due to impact and fire. Now the question remains, was it controlled demolition or was it terrorist attacking the World Trade Center on purpose? This conspiracy theory revolves around authorities knowing about the attackers and also guiding them to complete their terror attack. None of the deaths would have happened without the deliberate unplugging of Americas air defense. The twin tower did not fall of plane impacts or fire. People claim that jet fuel doesn t melt steel beams. It was a controlled explosion by the government. Our mission is to expose the official lies in a way that inspires the people to overcome denial and understand the truth. People want answers to what happened that morning, devastation all around.
