MOSHIACH IN THE PARSHA
Teshuvah brings about the ultimate geulah, as our chachomim
taught us: “[The geulah] depends solely on teshuvah”
(sanhedrin 97b). The Rambam rules that “The Torah already
assured that the Yidden will ultimately repent, in the final period
of golus, and then they will be redeemed immediately” (hilchos
teshuvah 7:5).
This does not mean, however, that the geulah will not occur
unless all the yidden do complete teshuva in the simple sense of
these words. For:
a) There is not a single Yid who has not already had thoughts
of teshuvah several times in the course of his life. The halocho
stipulates that the mere thought of teshuvah transforms even the
wicked person into a most righteous one.
b) People living in our times who presently do not observe the
Torah and its Mitzvos are like “infants taken into captivity among
heathens” and raised by them (thus not knowing any better).
They are “tinokos she'nishbeu,” and “the Torah exonerates tinokos
she'nishbeu,” Moreover, when such “captives” observe even a
single mitzvah, it is most precious and dear to Hashem. In fact, we
see that precisely nowadays there are thousands of such “tinokos
she'nishbeu,” who have already returned, and many more who are
constantly returning to their spiritual roots, to the path of the
Torah.
c) The geulah will actually occur even before the Yidden repent.
Thus it is written, “ve'hu yifde es yisroel mikol avonosov” (Tehilim
130:8), and the meforshim explain: “Even aveiros will not impede
the geulah, for he will redeem all Yidden from all there aveiros.”
This is seen also from the text of the tachanun which cites first,
“pedeh elokim es yisroel mikol tzorotzov” (Tehilim 25:22), and
only thereafter the posuk, “ve'hu yifde es yisroel mikol avonosov”
(Tehilim 130:8). In other words, first Hashem will redeem the
Yidden from the distress of the golus, and thereafter he will
redeem them from their aveiros.
One of the meforshim on Michah explain (7:18), “mee e-l
kamocha nosei avon veover al pesha le'sheris nachalaso lo hechezik
load apo ki chofetz chesed hu”:
Those that remain when Moshiach comes... though they will be
guilty to the point that they should not leave the golus because
of their aveiros, Hashem will not look at their behavior forever
“ki chofetz chesed hu…” His mercy shall prevail over their aveiros
when the time of geulah arrives!

LIVING LESSONS
A Rov was once travelling, and stayed overnight in an inn.
The innkeeper was a simple Yid, but he recognized that his
guest was a distinguished Rebbe, and tried to accord him every
consideration.
In the middle of the night (as was the custom), the Rov
awakened to recite tikkun chatzos. He sat on the floor, and read pirkei
tehillim, expressing his mourning over the churban. In the next
room, the innkeeper somehow awakened, and was distressed to hear
sounds of weeping from the room of his illustrious guest. Worried,
the innkeeper hastened to the room of the Rov to ask about the cause
of his sorrow.
“What is troubling you, Rebbe”, he asked, “is your bed not
comfortable, is your room too hot or cold, did you perhaps find fault
with the meals we served you?”
The Rov set his mind at ease that the service was, in fact, beyond
reproach, and was not the cause of his crying. Rather, what the
innkeeper overheard was his davening and beseeching Hashem to
bring us Moshiach.
“Moshiach”, asked the simple innkeeper, “who is that?”
“Did you never hear about Moshiach?” asked the Rov. He explained
to his simple host how all Yidden were eagerly awaiting the coming
of Moshiach, who would take us all to eretz yisroel. The innkeeper
digested this novel idea, and ran to share it with his wife. “What!”
exclaimed the good woman, “to go to eretz yisroel? Please tell the
Rabbi that this is impossible at this time. Why, we have our inn here,
and our house and our barn with all of our animals, how can we just
pick up and go to eretz yisroel?!”
The innkeeper ran back to his guest and conveyed his wife’s
reservations. The Rov tried to speak to the simpleton in his own
language. “True”, he conceded to him, “you are settled here with all
of your possessions. But you have no peace here. Every few years,
the goyim make a pogrom, and steal and destroy everything, and you
need to begin anew. Once we all go to eretz yisroel, we’ll be free of
the goyim!”
The idea made sense to the innkeeper, but, not one to make
decisions on his own, he asked leave of the Rov to consult with his
wife. Moments later he returned. “Rebbe”, he asked humbly, “my wife
asks to kindly make a request of Moshiach; – let us stay here where
we’re settled, and let Moshiach take the goyim to eretz yisroel!”

דאלאי גלות
For someone who was not present, it is hard to picture the excitement which filled the air and the uplifted atmosphere which reigned
in 770 on erev yom kippur 5752. By contrast to the usual more serious tone projected by the Rebbe on this most significant and decisive day,
this year the situation was somewhat different.
It is not surprising that through the entire duration of the 15 minute dollar distribution following the sicha the Rebbe delivered after Mincha, the
crowd of chassidim gathered into a whirlpool of joyful dancing in the center of 770, an extremely rare sight in the Rebbe’s presence.
In the sicha the Rebbe clarifies, that although this day is called “yom hakippurim – a day which is like purim”, which may imply that it is of lesser
spiritual status than purim itself, the truth is that the comparison works vice-versa – it is merely similar to purim and not exactly the same for
it is much higher. From this the Rebbe infers that if on Purim one must reach a situation of “ad delo yoda”, a state of complete oblivion to one's
mundane surroundings, how much more so on Yom Kippur that the “ad delo yoda” attained must infinitely surpass that of purim.
The Rebbe continues to explain that just like when the first beis hamikdosh was built, the festive feast in honor of the “chanukas habayis”
(inauguration) undermined the prohibition to eat on yom kippur, so too when Moshiach is revealed and builds the third beis hamikdosh there will
be a seven day celebration which will continue straight through yom kippur.
These are two of the many amazing statements the Rebbe proclaimed in this sicha. The surprising thing, then, is, that the chassidim managed to
contain their excitement until the conclusion of the sicha . . .

It says that before the geulah, all Yidden will
experience death for a short period of time, The
Rebbe explained that this is not in contradiction to
the inyan that our generation will experience chayim
nitzchiyim beli hefsek beintayim for this must not be
fulfilled literally, rather it can fulfilled through the
avodah of bittul which is in a way similar to death.
