This presentation focuses on the use of Audiovisual Translation in foreign language learning and it presents ClipFlair, a web platform specifically designed for this purpose.
Language teachers often resort to video to present their students with linguistic and cultural aspects of communication in their context. Since learning-by-doing is generally considered more effective than learning-by-viewing, they try to find active tasks for their learners, such as note-taking, answering questions, summarizing or discussing the video with peers. Familiar Audiovisual Translation modalities, such as subtitling and dubbing, can be used in this context as multimodal resources that can account for a very active and motivating educational framework.
ClipFlair proposes an authentic way of working with audiovisual material which results in a product, valuable in its own right: a subtitled or dubbed clip. Learners are asked to add to the clip their own subtitles, captions for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, annotations or intertitles. Alternatively, they can record their voice to simulate foreign film dubbing, voice-over, free commentary, or audio description for the blind. Clips can be short video or audio files, including documentaries, film scenes, news pieces, animations and songs.

Abstract:
Since December 2010, a series of protests and uprisings have shocked North African countries such as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen and more. In this paper, focusing mainly on the Egyptian revolution, we provide evidence of the intense edit activity occurred during these uprisings on the related Wikipedia
pages. Thousands of people provided their contribution on the content pages and discussed improvements and disagreements on the associated talk pages as the traumatic events unfolded. We
propose to interpret this phenomenon as a process of collective memory building and argue how on Wikipedia this can be studied empirically and quantitatively in real time. We explore and suggest possible directions for future research on collective memory formation of traumatic and controversial events in Wikipedia.

Translation is as old as language. Different language communities considered translation necessary for their interaction. With translation as an important activity, there emerged diverse theories to guide it.
Influenced by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu approach to power within the context of comprehensive theory of society, Helbron and Sapiro reject the idea of interpretive approach to the text and the economic analysis of transnational exchanges, and call for study of translation practice from their specific position within the world system of translation . This presentation does critical analysis of these thoughts and deals with translation as a socially regulated activity that has following three dimensions:
1) Nation states and various agents get engaged in the cross- national transfer that involves existence of field of international relations of exchange forming global system of translation
2) These exchanges involve power relations, and nation states and various agents involved compete with each other to gain supremacy through political, social or cultural dynamics
3) The dynamics of translation depend on the structure of space of reception and the way relevant intermediaries shape social demand.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
