Tissues are groups of cells that work together to perform specific functions. There are four main types of tissues in animals and plants:
(1) Epithelial tissues cover and protect surfaces, and allow for absorption and secretion. (2) Connective tissues connect and support other tissues. (3) Muscle tissues allow for movement. (4) Nervous tissues receive and transmit electrochemical signals. Tissues are organized into organs that work together as organ systems to keep the organism functioning.
