Small presentation on different types of missile, their characteristics, technology etc.If anything is wrong let me know. There are some animated videos that will help to understand. Thank you.
2. INTRODUCTION
What is missile?
An object or weapon that is fired, thrown, dropped or otherwise projected at a target.
It can be self-propelled or it can be directed by remote control.
The word missile comes from the Latin verb mittere , meaning “to send”
3. HISTORY OF MISSILE
The idea of missile first came to the mind of Nazi scientists back
in World War II.
They developed a series of missiles but most famous of these
were V-1 flying bomb and V-2 rocket.
They both were autopilot control.
5. CRUISE MISSILE
A cruise missile is an unmanned self-
propelled guided vehicle that sustains flight
through aerodynamic lift for most of its flight
path and whose primary mission is to place
an ordnance or special payload on a target.
They fly within the earth’s atmosphere and
use jet engine technology .Depending upon
the speed such missiles are classified as:
1. Subsonic cruise missile
2.Supersonic cruise missile
3.Hypersonic cruise missile
6. BALLISTIC MISSILE
A ballistic missile is a missile that has
a ballistic trajectory over most of its
flight path ,regardless of whether or
not it is a weapon-delivery vehicle
.Ballistic missiles are categorized
according to their range , maximum
distance measured along the surface
of earth’s ellipsoid from the point of
launch to the point of impact of the
last element of their payload.
7. DIFFERENCE
Ballistic Missile Cruise Missile
1. Ballistic missile is targeted as a projectile from a
single launch force with not much added guidance.
1. Cruise missile is a self guided autopilot plane.
2. A ballistic missile has a boost stage and then falls
unpowered onto the target .
2. A cruise missile’s cruise motor burns all the way
into the motor.
3. Ballistic missile has extreme initial speed. 3. Cruise missile has low initial speed but the speed
increases when the target is near.
4. It is hard to provide accurate guidance to the
missile.
4. It is easier to provide accurate guidance than
ballistic guidance.
5. Ballistic missiles fly at high altitude and are more
detectable on radar.
5. Cruise missiles fly at low altitude and it is difficult
for radar to detect.
9. WARHEAD
Warhead is the part of a missile which
contains either the nuclear or
thermonuclear system, high explosive
system, chemical or biological agents, or
inert materials intended to inflict damage.
SEEKER
Seekers are also known as infrared
homing. It is a guidance system which use
as the infrared light emission from a target
to track and follow it. Missiles which use
this technology are often referred to as
“Heat-seekers” since infrared is radiated
strongly by hot bodies.
10. PROPULSION
Propulsion system helps to
accelerate the missile body and
sustain to reach the required
target. The propulsion system
consists of chamber, a nozzle and
an igniter.
DATALINK
Datalink system is a fully
customizable, software defined
radio solution for missiles. The
component enables the operator
to exchange information through
a secure wireless communication
link with the missile during
engagement.
11. MISSILE GUIDANCE
For a specific mission, particular guidance technique is used.
The different types of guidance are:
(1)Command guidance,
(2)Homing or seeker guidance,
(3)Beam rider guidance, and
(4)Ranging Navigation guidance
12. COMMAND GUIDANCE
In Command guidance target is tracked by an
external radar. However, a second radar also
tracks the missile itself. The tracking data from
both radars are fed into a ground based
computer that calculates the paths of the two
vehicles. This computer also determines what
commands need to be sent to the missile
control surfaces to steer the missile on an
intercept course with the target. These
commands are transmitted to a receiver on
the missile allowing the missile to adjust its
course.
13. HOMING GUIDANCE
A system by which a missile or torpedo steers itself
towards a target by means of a self-contained
mechanism which is activated by some
distinguishing characteristics of the target. It is the most
common form of guidance used in anti-air missiles today.
Three primary forms of guidance fall under the homing
guidance umbrella--semi active, active, and passive.
14. SEMI-ACTIVE HOMING GUIDANCE
In semi-active homing guidance, the missile
carrying vehicle emits signal to the target. When
the signal reflects from the target, the reflected
signal is received by the launched missile. The
missile has a computer installed in its body
which helps the missile to track the target.
15. ACTIVE HOMING GUIDANCE
Active homing works just like semi-active except
that the tracking energy is now both transmitted
by and received by the missile itself. No external
source is needed. It is for this reason that active
homing missiles are often called "fire-and-
forget" because the launch aircraft does not
need to continue illuminating the target after
the missile is launched.
16. PASSIVE HOMING GUIDANCE
A system of homing guidance where in the
receiver in the missile utilizes radiation from
the target.
17. BEAM-RIDER GUIDANCE
Beam riding is based on a signal that is pointed
towards the target. The signal does not have to
be powerful, as it is not necessary to use it for
tracking as well. The main use of this kind of
system is to destroy airplanes or tanks. First,
an aiming station (possibly mounted in a vehicle)
in the launching area directs a narrow radar or
laser beam at the enemy aircraft or tank. Then,
the missile is launched and at some point after
launch is “gathered” by the radar or laser beam
when it flies into it. From this stage onwards, the
missile attempts to keep itself inside the beam,
while the aiming station keeps the beam pointing
at the target. The missile, controlled by a
computer inside it, “rides” the beam to the
target.
18. RANGING NAVIGATION GUIDANCE
It uses GPS for the location. GPS
consists of a constellation of 24
satellites in geosynchronous orbit
around the Earth. If a GPS receiver on
the surface of the Earth can receive
signals from at least four of these
satellites, it can calculate an exact
three-dimensional position with great
accuracy.
19. ADVANTAGES:
Missile combat employment is completely autonomous.
Missile flexible flight trajectories.
High supersonic speed.
High level of mobility.
Does not contain or need a qualified pilot on board.
Missiles are easily guided.
A lot of them don’t even need an actual visual of the target from the operator, meaning they can lock on even
if you cant see the target.
High precision for mass destruction.
There is no need of ground team support for the attack.
Each type of missile is suited for particular job.
Minimal crew.
20. DISADVANTAGES:
Missiles can be destroyed in flight(either with Defender missiles or with a well-timed smart bomb
detonation)
Missiles have to rely on the ground-based radar for guidance.
Nuclear missiles make plants, soil and rain radioactive.
The lack of human pilot means you can’t reuse the thing, whereas you can multiple missions out of a
piloted aircraft.
High cost and missiles aren’t always accurate.
Causes human life to death.
21. TECHNOLOGY:
With the passage of time, new and improve
technology are being used in missiles. Russia has
made the latest missile which is RS-26 Ballistic
Missile. Russian scientists believe that this missiles
warheads are supersonic and can change their
course all the time. Some of them will penetrate
any existing missile defense shield and will hit their
target. Iran has developed a new missile defense
system named “Iron Dome” that can intercept and
destroy incoming short-range rockets and artillery
shells. India and Russia combine developed a new
cruise missile named “Brahmos” missile which is
the world’s fastest anti-ship cruise missile in
operation.
22. CONCLUSION
With this we conclude our topic by saying that missiles are harmful for happy and peaceful life, but
in today’s world, there is more amount of terrorism prevailing out as well as threat from the
neighboring countries, in these conditions if required we can use it for the welfare of our own
country men.
