The Olympic Ice Hockey Team Winning A Game
The Miracle on Ice was more than just the United States Olympic Ice Hockey Team winning a game.
The win for the United States had major political impacts on the United States, the Soviet Union and
the Cold War.
The Soviet Union entered the Lake Placid games as the favorite, having won the last four ice hockey
gold medals all the way back to the 1964 games. In the four Olympics following their 1960 loss to
Team USA at Squaw Valley, Soviet teams had gone 27 1 1 and outscored the opposition 175 44. In
match ups against the United States, the total score over those games was 28 7 with Russia outscoring
the US. The Soviet players, some were active duty military, played in an elite league in world class
training facilities. Many of the Soviet players were seasoned veterans with a lot of experience in
international play. The United States head coach, Herb Brooks, conducted tryouts in Colorado Springs
in the summer of 1979. Of the 20 players who eventually made the final Olympic roster, Buzz
Schneider was the only one returning from the 1976 Olympic team. Nine players had played under
Brooks at the University of Minnesota, which included Rob McClanahan, Mike Ramsey, and Phil
Verchota. Boston College and University of Minnesota were perennial rivals in college hockey and the
hostility spilled over from some of these players when they ended up being teammates on the US
Olympic team during the first few months. The average age of the U.S. team was 21 years old, making

Government Impact On Childhood Cancer
The Impact the Government can have on Childhood Cancer
Childhood cancers make up less than 1% of all cancers diagnosed each year (What Are the Key
statistics for Childhood Cancer). The creation of chemotherapy in the 1940 s showed off the progress
that can be made, slowing down or potentially stopping the production of cancer cell. With continuous
support of many cancer research hospitals and greater funds from the government we can swiftly
abolish childhood cancer forever.
Children with cancer should be entitled to government assistance. Funding childrens research
hospitals will give many children an opportunity to live their life and creates a chance for an impact
on our society. It is in our advantage to treat cancer in children, as their

Tech N9ne Research Paper
Tech N9ne and Strange Music
Some classical songs were not meant to be classics, such as Im A Playa but who made this song?
Aaron Yates also known as Tech N9ne was born in Kansas City Missouri, 1971 November 8th. Aaron
grew up listening to blues and rock but it wasn t until a kid and Yates had a rap battle that Aaron found
out he loved to rap. While Tech N9ne was growing up he mainly wore red due to him living in a blood
neighbor hood. Aaron Yates is a very respected singer and very religious. He has made a pretty big
influence on his fans and has even surpassed some tough comings telling us not to do what he did
making himself a role model for listeners and believers.
Tech N9ne found Strange Music due to the record label saying they couldn t have his hardcore style
playing. After this occurred Aaron teamed up with Travis o Guin to start Strange Music. Techs new
album The Storm will come out almost 20 years after his album The Calm Before The Storm
(Zachary). Aaron takes special care of his music which is clearly seen in his album The Storm which

was not suppose to tell this story due to him not remembering that night but the 2 girls said it

Harley-Davidson Case Essay
Harley Davidson Mini Case
Question 1 The international business environment that Harley Davidson faces includes several
challenges and obstacles. These challenges include trying to increase sales in nations that already offer
well known brands of motorcycles at cheaper costs. Besides having to compete with local brands, in
places such as Europe each specific country may have different preferences on styling, size, and the
type of performance. Other obstacles include high tariffs in some emerging markets, potential for
piracy and counterfeiting of designs, environmental and regulatory sanctions due to high greenhouse
gas emissions, and the need lower carbon footprint standards. Should Harley attempt to increase its

With respect to Europe Harley could expand the presence of its HOG club as well as begin to offer
lines of motorcycles geared toward European tastes that are lighter weight, smaller, and faster. They
have already shown signs of doing this with the purchase MV Augusta Group in 2008. For the nation
of Japan Harley can expand its local distribution network and subsidiary. An introduction of the HOG
club there may also boost interest in the brand. The company can also focus on cutting production
costs and offering their motorcycles at lower prices to compete with the local Japanese brands that are
considerably cheaper. It would also be wise for Harley to maintain its path of lowering its greenhouse
gas emissions and carbon footprint to appease the Japanese government and to appeal to the Japanese
public.
Question 4 Harley can compete against firms such as Lifan and Zongshen in a few ways. In one regard
Harley can stick to its core business of heavyweight bikes and attempt to rely on its brand name and
history to attract customers. These bikes would be more expensive and Harley probably would not
make large gains within these markets. Simultaneously Harley could also attempt to open local
assembly plants, distribution networks, and subsidiaries to utilize the same low cost labor as their
emerging competitors. As they did in Europe, Harley could also purchase one of these competitors to
adhere to the tastes of the local market. Harley should look

Changes In Polar Bear Eating Habits
On the western shore of the Hudson Bay, biologists have been studying the drastic changed in polar
bear diets and their new eating habits. Through their studies of polar bear scat and video surveillance,
the biologists have come to the conclusion that polar bears are beginning to adopt a new form of food.
They are beginning to eat from the abundant source of snow geese. The snow geese have been
traveling farther north in the spring to nest in the grassy, arctic marshes. Here they lay their eggs,
vulnerable to predators such as the polar bear. Due to the global warming, the arctic ice has begun to
melt at a much faster pace. This means that polar bears have less time and less ice to hunt for seals.
The polar bears have always relied on seals

Pilate As A Positive Figure In The Bible
The Bible is interpreted in many different ways. Depending on who wrote the chapter, when the story
was written, and it depends on the person who is reading the story. All of these factors contribute to
how we read the Bible. Depending on the context of the situation, Pilate may be portrayed as a
negative, neutral, or positive figure in the Bible. Warrens Carter s book, Pontius Pilate: Portraits of a
Roman Governor, states, Gundry sees the first sign of this Christianizing in Matthew s presentation
when Pilate asks the crowd if they want to release Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Christ?
(Carter 9). This source claims that Pilate is one of the first Christians and makes an effort to save Jesus
from being crucified. I argue that Pilate is seen as a negative figure in the Bible because The standard
way of thinking about Pilate s role as a figure in the Bible has it that Pilate is seen as a positive figure.
Pilate is the governor and holds most of the power, he is aware of Jesus s innocence before crucifying
him, and he is naïve to think that his hands are cleaned of Jesus s blood.
Pilate is seen as a negative character because of many different reasons. Pilate is not a normal citizen
of Judaea; he was the governor. He had the power to approve or disapprove any decision the city
wanted to make. Some sources claim that Pilate did not want to start a riot or that he fell into peer
pressure, but a strong leader should have been able to stand up for the right

Critical Critique Of Dr Faustus
Doctor Faustus was written in Elizabethan age that is also known as Shakespearean age or as a
Renaissance period. It is a historical play based on the story of Faust who is a well known doctor of
theology. He has too much knowledge and wants to acquire more. Law and physic are the good wits
and he thinks that philosophy is not petty good. He is of the view that divinity is the basest and all the
necromantic books are glorious. He withdrew God and sells his soul in the hands of Lucifer, Prince of
Hell. He has also committed a fling with Helen of Troy and become eternally loathsome.
Genre:
Doctor Faustus, a play by Marlowe showed all the characteristics of Renaissance movement as well as
it showed the Christian religion and at the same time Elizabethan era. It is purely a morality play.
Source of Influence: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of the critics said that Marlowe has composed his story which is written in Faustbuch in which a
person commits a sin and then he has faced punishment.
Structure of doctor Faustus:
Some of the critics are of the view that Doctor Faustus is a play which deals with the unevenness. It
has some gaps in the middle part of the plot. It does not have any good start, ending as well as middle.
Just because of this the unity of action with the chain of effect and cause is badly interrupted. But the
reality is contrary to this, no doubt the unity of action is there and the middle portion of the play is the
most essential part of the play.
Plot of doctor Faustus:
As Aristotle has given the idea of a good play. It should have a proper beginning, a middle and an end.
But Doctor Faustus does not follow these rules. Doctor Faustus has a weak middle if compare to its
beginning and

The Rocking-Horse Winner
The world has always been full of hatred, war, and strife, but the one thing holding us together is love.
One of the main concepts to happiness is being loved and loving others. In my 17 years of living, I
have seen and experienced love on multiple occasions. The love a couple has for each other. A love of
God. A love of friends and family. Even the love a pet has for it s owner. A love that sticks out the
most is the love a parent has for their child and vice versa. The famous novelist, poet, playwright,
essayist, literary critic and painter, David Lawrence, wrote the short story The Rocking Horse Winner ,
which digs deeper in the concept of love. The narrative begins with a mother, Hester, who is
struggling with whether she loves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrative starts out telling about Hester having trouble loving her children. It has never been a
common thing that a mother just stops loving her children. She also loves money more than her
family. This shows how unthankful she is for the family and life she has. Materials such as money
mean more to her than family does. This is shown towards the end of the narrative The Rocking Horse
Winner , Paul knew that the derby was coming up, so he rode the rocking horse as hard as he could to
figure out which horse would win. He thought the more he rode his rocking horse, the more money he
would make, to please his mother. He was so stressed about betting on the horse that would win, he
became ill. This is when his mother actually became a little concerned about him. Paul was in critical
condition, He neither slept nor regained consciousness, and his eyes were like blue stones. His mother
sat, feeling her heart had gone, turned to actual stone (Lawrence 495). Bassett visited him to tell him
that the horse Paul said would win, had won. Paul awoke when Bassett told him the news. Paul asked
his mother if he told her how lucky he was, and she said he never did. He died that night. In
consequence, she did earn money, but she lost a child because of her

The Odyssey, The Ramayana Of Valmiki, And The Bhagavad Gita
War has been treated as an acceptable response to political or personal disagreements. The Bhagavad
Gita shows how a person can have a moral dilemma when faced with the prospect of fighting against
people who are familiar. This story explains how, if there are no other options available to solve a
dispute, then violent conflicts are acceptable responses. The use of armed conflict to resolve any
political or personal disputes has been a theme that is visible in famous warrior stories. The Odyssey,
The Ramayana of Valmiki, and The Bhagavad Gita all deal with conflicts of war and how it can affect
the lives of those involved. Violence as a solution to combat any disagreements or problems has been
viewed as noble and necessary in many stories. Armed conflict and violence has an effect on everyone
involved and the aftermath can be just as destructive as the initial fighting. The characters in these
stories are defined by their status as a warrior and hero. A man s ability to be successful in battle has
been praised in these stories. Odysseus and Rama are both viewed as strong heroes and they have been
praised for the violent actions taken in order to solve the situations in their lives. Arjuna was a warrior
who was expected to fight against loved ones because that was his job as a solider. The nature of war
in these ancient stories showed how accepted and valued violence conflicts were to a hero s status and
legend. The Bhagavad Gita handles the question of when

The Swatch Group Essay examples
The Swatch Group: Competing In An Increasingly Global Market For Watches
Nicholas Hayek and Ernst Thomke formed the Swatch Group (the Group) in 1983 by merging two
bankrupt watch making groups. The merger gave the Group ownership of many of the Switzerland s
dominant watch brands. Swatch, their first product initiative, was so successful that it helped pull the
squandering Swiss watch industry out of a slump. In June 1999, with its 14 brands, the Group was the
world s largest watch manufacturer (in value terms). However, the global industry had changed and
would continue to change dramatically in the new millennium. The Swatch Group was at a strategic
crossroad and had to analyze the industry s past and future in order to determine ... Show more content

Let us look at several key figures relating to the Group and its industry at the time the case was
written:
¡ In 1999, the Swiss watch industry produced over 34 million units. Over 90% of these watches were
exported to markets outside of Switzerland.
¡ Although they were responsible for only 7% of the world s production, Swiss watches generated
51% of the global value.
¡ The Swatch group, with its 14 brands, was the world s largest manufacturer (also in value terms).
¡ Nearly 90% of the Group s profits were generated by four brands: Omega, Swatch, Tissot, and Rado.
These brands competed in the following segments: luxury, basic, middle, and high range
(respectively).
¡ The Group s prestige, luxury, and top ranged brands were third in global market share at 14%
(behind Rolex at 28% and Vendome at 20%).
¡ The Group s gross sales and net profits had increased by 7.1% and 7.5% respectively in 1998.
¡ The Group s US market share was under 3% in 1998.
We can draw several conclusions based on these and other figures presented in the case. First, it is
clear that the Group s financial performance was strong. They managed to derive the most value from
the fewest units of production, a luxury attributed to the high prices the Group charged for its
products. As such, they had an advantage over other manufacturers whose low price points generated
lower returns. Next, it is clear that exports were important for the Group

Research Paper On Fraternal Twins
In my opinion, twins reared in such different conditions can display some of the same traits especially
in their biological traits. In this movie (Twins, 1988), Julius and Vincent Benedict considered as
fraternal twins. Fraternal twins are formed from two different ova fertilized by two different sperm.
The fraternal twins are siblings born at the same time. Like other siblings they share half their genes,
chromosomes and also deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), (M Fish, 2010). So they shared some of the
common traits indirectly in their daily routine. Not only that, it was also considered as nature, which is
the biological traits inherited from their biological parents.
Adoption studies stated that two sets of factors that may account for differences in behaviour and
personality which is biological parents and environmental parents. So any links between the biological

people instead of his biological father, this can be explained by the incidence whereby he is shy
speechless when he met a girl, Marnie in the supermarket. Besides, he was also resists to those
antisocial activities or behavior. In contrast, Vincent was more to craft and sly guys. This probably
because of nurture factor whereby he lived in a competitive city and need to compete with others in
order to survive. So Vincent was a big mouth and glib tongue guys, especially to her girlfriend. Not

Loyalist Or Patriot Analysis
Shall I be Loyalist or Patriot? After the victory towards French in the Seven Years War, the political
and social relationship of the colonists and Great Britain had shifted to a different direction. The
colonists began to think of themselves as Americans. At that time, The British government felt that the
colonies had become quite independence, and they wanted their colonies to start paying tax in order to
help England pay the national debt. Not only were Americans forced to pay direct taxes, but they were
also obliged to involve in strict regulatory acts such as Sugar Act and Currency Act. Sugar Act (1764)
strongly affected American s trading in which their oceanic vessels and cargos could be inspected by
the British Navy and might be confiscated if the paper and the goods that being transported were in
disagreement. Currency Act (1764) restricted colonial governments to print their own paper money.
These two acts put some colonists in anger but they were not enough to result in civil disorder until
the Stamp Act was passed. The reason that the colonists resisted government authority with the
passage of the Stamp Act (1765) was because the Stamp Act collected taxes in all type of papers
including newspapers, playing cards, licenses, and stamps. This outraged many colonists especially

The Issue Of Open Carry
Gun Laws Brad Coffman Ms. Scannell 10 November 2015 Abstract Open carry has been a proven fact
to save lives and cut down on violence throughout the world. I believe that open carry would create a
gateway to less violence and more opportunity. We have the right to exercise our rights as Americans.
We shouldn t have to cower in fear at the sight of a gun when guns gave us our freedom. The British
weren t going to just hand Americans all the land they wanted. The Americans fought for it, with guns.
They didn t take no for an answer and look where we are, two hundred years later and our country is

The sad part is, many people are making a huge controversy over the fact that it would cause more
problems than it would solve. No one is subject to knowing if a teacher is really carrying a gun or not.
A teacher can carry a gun without anyone, not even the superintendent, has to know. Teachers must be
completely trained before trying to carry at a school. Six of the twenty eighty states became legal after
the tragic Sandy Hook shooting. Thirty three states tried to pass the bill to carry in schools through
legislation but only five were able to do such. Teachers are known to say that they take it deeply
personal when a shooter messes with their students. Utah is the easiest of all states for teachers and
everyone to carry a gun. No fatal shootings have occurred in Utah since the day teachers have been
allowed to carry guns in school over a decade ago. The Gun Violence Prevention Center is trying hard
to disarm teachers and other Americans alike. Some believe that teachers with guns make the kids feel
as if they are in an unsafe environment, but a lot of people believe otherwise. Schools can designate
teachers to carry a gun in their school if they very well feel it is necessary. There are almost nine guns
for every ten people in the United States including children, women, and men. Gun owners believe it
is a right most valued by free people throughout the United States. There s an estimated two hundred

Essay on Research In Clinical Practise
Research In Clinical Practise
Introduction to Portfolio
The research articles to be critiqued relate to the author s area of practice; community nursing and in
particular; the cost effectiveness of community leg ulcer clinics. The author currently manages a leg
ulcer clinic and an insight into the research underpinning their cost effectiveness would be of benefit
in her quest to deliver evidence based practice in line with the principles underpinning clinical
governance.
Management of venous leg ulcers had advanced considerably over the last decade. This is due to
various factors from greater knowledge of the aetiology of leg ulceration to more recent
developments, such as dedicated leg ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nursing has been striving to become a research based profession since the Briggs Report (1972) and
the lack of apparent integration of research findings into nursing practice has been lamented
consistently ever since (Walsh and Ford, 1989). As long ago as 1989 the Department of Health (DoH),
in their Strategy for Nursing stated; All clinical practice should be founded on up to date information
and research findings.
Practitioners should be encouraged to identify the needs and opportunities for research presented by
their work. Research is fundamental to achieving evidence based practice in nursing. Evidence based
health care aims to promote clinical and cost effective care/treatment through the explicit,
conscientious, and judicious use of the currently available best evidence from research to guide
decisions (Sackett et al, 1996).
Recently, there has been an increasing emphasis on evidence based practice. The NHS information
strategy, the development of the NHS net and the National Electronic Library for Health all testify to
the NHS commitment of bringing research evidence closer to clinical decision makers (Thompson et
al 2001). Journal based initiatives are also available such as Evidence Based Nursing (Cullum et al.
1997) and Clinical Effectiveness in Nursing (Newell 1997). Furthermore, guidance can be found in
publications such as NICE (National Institute

Greek Art Power
Introduction The capacity of a society to produce art is, in effect, an exercise of its power. It is through
the presence of affluence that a nation is capable of focusing not solely upon survival, but the
development and proliferation of culture, of which art is a central element. The Greek and Roman
Empires will be explored from this perspective. Herein, the way in which the power of these two
empires was exemplified through the art they were capable of producing will be explored in depth
herein. As will be demonstrated, the substantial cultures each nation developed, in concert with the art
therein, were supported through the power of the nation states of Greece and Rome. For a creative
class to exist to produce art, a leisure class ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Roman conquest of the Greek East resulted in the beginning of a substantial period of
acculturation. At the time, the Roman city state was considered relatively primitive, however, upon
having taken the Greek East, took much from Hellenistic culture. The successful conquest of this
region demonstrated the military and economic superiority of Rome over Greece. The fact that a
younger nation, that of Rome, was capable of conquering a more ancient civilization demonstrated the
rapid military progress realized by the nation. The borrowing of much of the culture that had been
defeated was an oddity from a historical perspective. Generally, when a nation conquered another, the
culture of the victorious nation would eclipse that of the conquered peoples. The reverse was realized
in the Roman conquest over Greece through the superior cultural development of Greece over Rome
at the time in the 2nd century B.C. Prior to the conquest of the Greek East, much of what would
become Roman culture would have been considered to be excess. The cities of Greece, such as
Classical Athens, had a refined high culture, contrasting sharply with the lesser cultured Roman cities.
The high culture of Greece, as discussed above, allowed for the development of a form of art that was
applied to both pottery and the equipment of war, with this equipment failing in the face of Roman
military might and

Discuss Scientific Management, Max Weber and Concept of...
2.3 DISADVANTAGES OF MAX WEBER AND THE CONCEPT OF BUREAUCRACY
Despite the clear advantages of bureaucracy, one would wonder if they are really efficient. Nearly all
governmental organizations adopt this form of organization to some extent and weber claimed they
were capable of achieving the highest efficiency. Below are draw backs of bureaucracy concepts: (a)
Impersonality can ensure a common level of treatment but may also lead to stereotyping behavior and
lack of responsiveness to individual incidents. Relationships are inhibited, meaning that social and ego
needs are unsatisfied. (b) Human beings and individual circumstances vary pretty much infinitely and
trying to apply rigid rules can mean inefficiency, even injustice, in ... Show more content on

The illumination and interviewing studies, on the other hand, involved whole departments of workers.
From these experiments, the final core conclusions that the researchers reached were that the
experimental variables such as incentive payment had little effect, while that the unmeasured quality
of human relations of workers to management and peer group was responsible for most output
improvement (Gale, 2004).
3.1 ADVANTAGES OF THE HAWTHORNE EXPERIMENTS
In the past, managers considered workers as machinery that could be bought and sold easily. To
increase production, workers were subjected to long hours, miserable wages and undesirable working
conditions. The welfare of workers and their need were disregarded. The Hawthorne studies helped in
shaping transformations in many areas of human relations and brought about radical changes in
organizational behavior.
The traditional popular belief that increasing output of an organization was directly related to
increasing workers wages was disproved. Experiments conducted by Mayo proved that there were
more than economic factors that improved efficiency. Consequently, human relations were a key
component to improve organizational output as evidenced from tests conducted.
The Hawthorne experiments evolved the rest pauses as cardinal for well being and effectiveness of
workers and efficient

Using Porous Asphalt Surface Surfaces
scuffing, mixes are typically designed with polymer modified binders. Fibers are often added to the
mix to reduce drain down. Many states have a specification for open graded friction courses and
asphalt treated permeable bases that may be used in specifying mixes for porous asphalt pavements.
(U.S. Department of Transportation, 2015). An added advantage to using porous asphalt is that it does
not need proprietary ingredients. It also does not require the contractor to have special paving
equipment or skills other than those needed to place normal asphalt. With the proper information, most
asphalt plants can easily prepare the mix and general paving contractors can install it. State
specifications should be checked to see if they abide by the key properties shown in Table 1. Table 1.

The Great Depression
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself, is a famous quote once said during the Great Depression
by Franklin D. Roosevelt. After one world war, great financial fallout, and another world war to
follow, the twentieth century was already shaping out to be a handful. When the Great Depression was
coming to an end and the economy was trying to turn around, jobs started opening up and a new wave
of immigrants came into New York, the Puerto Ricans. For some the American dream was to come to
America and start a new life, but for others already here, it was about making it big in show business.
West Side Story , a twentieth century musical, was greatly influenced by the immigration during that
time.
Before West Side Story was written, there were some major events that occurred. For instance, in
1914 America entered WWI. Then in 1920, women were given the right to vote and women s suffrage
was a big focus of the twenties (Unstend 6). Soon after in October of 1929, the Great Depression
followed, causing massive economic downfall to the United States. Families during that time were
very poor, but millions still went to watch films at local theaters (Unstend 12). One technological
advance was the first television which began in 1936 (Unstend 30). After the Great Depression hit,
WWII came shortly after and America entered the war on December 7, 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl
Harbor (Unstend 18). In 1945, the U.S. possessed the atomic bomb helping to protect the U.S

The Battle Of Fort Wagner
The Battle of Fort Wagner consisted of two battles the second being the most deadly and the most
famous of the battles. There were several events and terrain features that cost the Union these battles
during the attempted siege of Fort Wagner. Even though the Battles were a complete loss there s
several things that came from the battles that had lasting impacts on the war and America.
The Union Army wanted to destroy Fort Sumter to allow the Union Navy access to Charleston Harbor

Putnam. In the battle of Fort Wagner Gillmore also worked closely with Rear Adm. John A. Dahlgren
s Federal fleet.
The first battle of Fort Wagner took place early morning on July 10th and 11th, 1863, where the Union
Army began with an amphibious assault from the south which drove all Confederate forces back to
Fort Wagner. During this battle the Union Army captured 150 Confederate soldiers. Some historians
speculate that Fort Wagner could have possibly been destroyed if Gillmore wouldn t have rested that
day of the 10th when he drove the Confederates back to the Fort. Because Gillmore rested after the
first battle it gave Taliaferro more time to reinforce the Fort for the following day where the
Confederate army repelled an attack against the 7th Connecticut infantry. This mistake cost the Union
army 330 men and the Confederate side only lost 12 men.
At 8:15am on July 18, 1863 the second battle of Fort Wagner commenced. It was initiated by four
federal land batteries and the Federal Fleet that shelled from the sea using 11 ships to include the USS
New Ironsides, a veritable floating gun platform sheathed in iron. The Confederate soldiers incased all
14 cannons in sandbags hoping they would last the unrelenting shelling of the Federal Fleet, which
hurled shells at the Fort weighing up to 400 pounds. The Confederate men retreated to the belly of the
Fort where they held out the shelling suffering zero casualties and amazingly loosing few

Marriage and Divorce in Hard Times
Marriage and Divorce in Dickens Hard Times: A Statement on the Religious Morals of 19th Century
British Society
The Victorian era in England gave birth to the first real industrial society the world had ever seen.
With the rise of industry came large cities, an expanded working class population and the rapid rise of
imperialism. Although England was progressing towards a more powerful place in the world, its
citizens seemed to be drifting in the opposite direction. Oppressive laws and working conditions set
clear boundaries between classes in England. The most oppressive social and state laws were those
regarding to marriages and divorces. Just as the people of England felt trapped in the unequal social

Judge William Blackstone had announced that husbands could administer moderate correction to
disobedient wives, and there were other means: as late as 1895, Edith Lanchester s father had her
kidnapped and committed to a lunatic asylum for cohabiting with a man (Wojtczak, English Women s
History ). Although religion is not explicitly mentioned in Hard Times, religious values were involved
in the social structure of England. Social and government laws were based on religious morals. For
example, The Bible specifically states, Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and
likewise also the wife unto the husband (King James Version, 1. Corinthians. 7.3). The Bible notes
that the husband should treat his wife with benevolence. When one thinks of marriage, they think of
love and emotions. This certainly does not seem to be the case in Mr. and Mrs. Gradgrind s marriage.
A perfect example of this is when Mrs. Gradgrind quotes on her deathbed, You must remember my
dear, that whenever I have said anything, on any subject, I have never heard the last of it; and
consequently, that I have long left off saying anything (Dickens 151). To expand this further, The
Bible also notes that, Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his
wife: and they shall be one flesh (Genesis, 2.24). The Bible promotes the idea of a man and woman
being together as one flesh. To be one is to be equal or balanced. This is not the

Cultural Diversity Of The Republic Of Indonesia
Within the cultural diversity of the Republic of Indonesia there are numerous artistic art forms that
have surfaced throughout this country. These genres give outsiders a glimpse into the cultural and
social context in which this society functions. Internationally this country is most recognized for its
traditional music ensemble known as gamelan. This art form serves as a significant part of the artistic
culture. It is used to accompany dances, puppet performances, rituals, and various ceremonies.
Furthermore, gamelan has always been an important part of the social construct within the different
provinces of Indonesia as it holds great recognition within its community. The different forms of
gamelan throughout the country in many ways have served as its own version of the Gesamtkunstwerk
within the culture of Indonesia and through provinces such as Bali we see how one of their own
genres of gamelan became the genesis for Balinese artistic culture.
Within the province of Bali, one of the most archaic genres within this region is known as Gambuh.
Gambuh is the oldest known surviving performing dance drama which dates back to the early
sixteenth century during the Majapahit era under the influence from classical Hindu Javanese court
culture and performing arts. According to ethnomusicologist Emiko Susilo she stated, When the dance
dramas of Majapahit came to Bali, they had the new task of preserving the tradition of a fallen
dynasty. This dance drama portrayed life

Employment generation through construction of rural roads, and ground water and minor irrigation to
support food security received much higher priority compared to need to enhance logistics to support
industrial growth and improving overall economic efficiency.
In five year plans a major goal was to connect all villages (with population of more than 1,500
inhabitants) with rural road network; however, this was done through minimum needs program
supporting employment creation and leading to waste and inefficiency. Most of the roads thus created
did not meet quality standards because fiscal space was not adequate to accommodate both the
demand for resources for rural roads and also the national highway network which was getting
congested. Even in the case of power sector, village electrification was a priority so as to provide
power for the farms, but not necessarily to households. Emphasis on connectivity, without
improvements in overall economic efficiency meant unsustainable financial burden on the government
budgets. In the time of slower economic growth or external shocks such as wars and high oil prices,
infrastructure investments were major casualty. China with its high economic growth rates and higher
savings rates was able to allocate much larger resources for investments in general. In the 1980, China
saved 35% of GDP whereas India s savings rate was less than half at 15.5%. This combined, with
higher fiscal deficits in

The Importance Of Sin And Evil In Hawthorne s Young...
In the short story, Young Goodman Brown written by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses some of the puritan
activities towards Goodman s dream, such as secrecy of sin and evil. The story introduces, a young

he left just for the day. He begins his walk into a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of
the forest (Hawthorne 1300) and was approached by a man also known as the devil. Throughout the
trip, Goodman Brown tried to resist him but the man reminded him that his father and grandfather

were continually looking at their lives, especially their thoughts, actions, and preference to make sure
to see they were living faithfully. In order for the puritans to know if they were living faithfully, they
were given signs or dreams, similar to Goodman and his dream. Whether it was a reality check or
dream, Goodman s dream places him to question him about his faith and salvation. Also, it was a sign
from God that Goodman was straying from his path of God s salvation. Hawthorne s portrays
Goodman s dream as a punishment from God similar to the puritan s punishment which were failure to

Hawthorne mentions, My Faith is gone! There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come devil;

of punishment from God. Every now and then, the puritans did not believe that they could be saved by

Camera Lucida By Roland Barthes
After Reading Camera Lucida written by Roland Barthes, I was both confused and interested by his
ideas. Though I did not understand much of the book, I was able to take a couple of his ideas and
really think about how I see photos. In the future, I intend to use these ideas when I look at photos.
One of his ideas that I was able to understand is the way he looks at pictures. The other one is his
second definition of punctum. The first of the two ideas that interested me the most was the way
Barthes looked at photos. He did not say that he liked a photo because it had his favorite animal or
color. He looked deeper into the photo. He looked to see what had caught his eye the most about a
photo he enjoyed. He called the catching of his eye the punctum. Barthes described the punctum as, ...
is that accident which pricks me... (Barthes 27). This prick didn t always hit him with every photo.
Throughout the book, he described certain photos that I thought were interesting, but he did not enjoy
them. An example of a photo that he didn t enjoy was the photo of the two nuns and three helmeted
soldiers, which was photographed by Koen Wessing in 1979. The main reason that it didn t appeal to
him was that it didn t have much of a, duality (Barthes 23) to it. Then there were photos that had
caught his eye. An example of an image he enjoyed and had his prick was a photo of an African
American family; photographed by James Van Der Zee in 1926. The family is not what the punctum
was. The

These components are vital to be considered before you can choose what procedure to use to evacuate

Most spray painting is done by utilising spray paint, yet a few vandals utilize markers, stickers, or

requires a specific method for removal, which changes relying upon the surface and the paint used.
With the exception of paint, spray painting evacuation materials can t be found in shops or different

System Thinking Is The Process Of Understanding How Things...
System thinking is the process of understanding how things influence one another within a system.
Russell L. Ackoff, Dr. W. Edwards Deming, and Peter Senge s define, think differently, and have
different approaches of system thinking. Russell L. Ackoff was born on February 12, 1919 in
Philadelphia. He was a pioneer in the field of operations research, systems thinking and management
science. (Russell L. Ackoff) He received his bachelor degree in architecture at the University of
Pennsylvania in 1941. In 1942 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army. After his return he went on to
study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his doctorate in philosophy of science in
1947 as C. West Churchman s first doctoral student. (Russell L. Ackoff) Russell L. Ackoff says the
typical way management has been trained in the western world is to divide any complex system into
parts, and then try to manage each part as best as you can. If these were to be divided into parts we
would believe two things which are any problem can be solved, and the system as a whole will behave
well. Ackoff goes on to say these are false because it s possible to improve the performance of each
part taken separately and destroy the system at the same time. (Production Management: A Total
Quality Management Approach) Ackoff defines a system as a whole containing two or more parts that
contains the five conditions. The first condition is the whole has one or more important properties or

took out a swath of knights. It was inspirational to see him fight, he wielded his blade with the grace
of a fencer and the ferocity of a starving lion. Those that saw him fight, friend or foe, called him a

continued to carve a path directly through the enemy forces, the horse he was riding upon had taken an

Abraham Lincoln And The Abolition Of Slavery
Even though the abolishment of slavery is a glorious accomplishment during his administration, it was
not the only defining factor of Abraham Lincoln when he was president. Lincoln saw past the
inequality of black and white and regarded equality and freedom above all as a basis for a united
nation because he wrote the Gettysburg Address at a crucial time during the civil war to earn favor
among freed slaves and to those opposed to slavery in the North and he decreed the Emancipation
Proclamation as a stepping stone to achieve his ultimate goal.
Lincoln had deep feelings on the subject of liberty. He knew it was a vital but delicate concept, which
needed to be cared for. Nearly a ten years earlier, in the midst of agitation over the Kansas Nebraska
Act, Lincoln had said in Peoria, Illinois: Little by little, but steadily as man s march to the grave, we
have been giving up the old for the new faith. Nearly eighty years ago we began by declaring that all
men are created equal; but now from that beginning we have run down to the other declaration, that
for some men to enslave others is a sacred right of self government. These principles cannot stand
together. They are as opposite as God and Mammon; and whoever holds to the one must despise the
other. (1) Perhaps as a young man, Lincoln had done his share of useless labor to fulfill his quota.
Lincoln did what was necessary and, in return, he expected others to do the same. His work ethic was
key to his attitudes toward

Controversial Aspects Of Government Regulation
Regulating a variety of aspects of business and society is an old and often controversial aspect of
government, particularly at the national level. Much of what the national government does, or fails to
do, has an impact on individual citizens, private corporations and other business enterprises,
agricultural producers and marketers, foreign governments, labor unions, and state and local
governments.
The first national regulatory efforts in the late 1800s were intended at punishment for, and the
prevention of, abuses in the marketplace, antitrust violations, and price gouging. During the 20th
century, government regulation became even more extensive, focusing not only on preventing certain
kinds of practices, but also requiring that certain in service standards can and should be met. And the
past 50 years, more than a dozen new regulatory agencies have been shaped at the national and state
government levels, following the route of new regulatory statutes. Regulatory measures contact
virtually every part of our lives.
Some government actions are seemingly not linked to regulating private lives, but still indeed do so.
These include local building codes and zoning laws; government housing loan programs with
minimum income requirements cut off many inferior citizens from an ability to ... Show more content

Some challenge that the most efficient regulator is free market competition among those seeking to
attract the buying public. They argue that government regulation is intrusive with the marketplace and
works to the disadvantage of both consumers and producers. Advocates of government regulation,
however, see a better need to observe and guide the path of competition. They believe that an entirely
unrestrained market will unavoidably lead to monopolistic practices, higher costs, underserved
segments of society, and lower quality goods and

Driving Through Sawmill Towns poem analysis Essay
Driving Through Sawmill Towns by Les Murray
In the high cool country, having come from the clouds, down a tilting road Into a distant valley,
You drive without haste. Your windscreen parts the forest,
Swaying and glancing, and jammed midday brilliance
Crouches in clearings...
Then you come across them,
The sawmill towns, bare hamlets built of boards
With perhaps a store,
Perhaps a bridge beyond
And a little sidelong creek alive with pebbles.
This first stanza ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This first stanza from the poem, explains the journey of a man driving through a sawmill town and his
observations. Murray describes his journey through a small sawmill town in New South Wales whilst
using strong, vivid imagery and emotive language.
As evident by the title of this poem, imagery is a strong technique used in this poem as the author
describes with great detail his journey through a sawmill town. This technique is used most in the
following phrases: ...down a tilting road, into a distant valley. And The sawmill towns, bare hamlets
built of boards with perhaps a store . This has the effect of creating an image in the reader s mind and
making the poem even more real.
There is also figurative language used in phrases such as Having come from the clouds and tilting road
. This adds to the effect of imagery and emphasis on the journey to the sawmill town. It also helps to
make the stanza more interesting to the reader.

Literary Devices In Amadeus
The music in Amadeus has been beyond the simple role as a background of the movie and greatly
influenced the flow of the narrative in the film. The movie Amadeus arouses realism and immersion in
the life of Mozart which is glorious but miserable at the same time by appropriately arranging the
narrative of the film with Mozart s great music. In other words, the soundtrack of the film composed
by Mozart works as the important dramatic device to describe Mozart s life, the main theme of the
movie ordinary people s jealousy of genius and the relationship between God and humans in further.
First of all, the Mozart s music in Amadeus is used to vividly illustrate the overall life of Mozart and
the situation in which Mozart s was in when he composed his music. The film Amadeus is based on
the play of the same title written by Peter Shaffer which is created depending on the rumor floating
around Vienna in the 1820s that Salieri poisoned Mozart. Even though it is revealed that the rumor,
which says, Mozart s death is related to Salieri, is not true by several historical researches, still
Amadeus depicts fictional life of Mozart in realistic way with appealing and enthrallment that the plot
has. In addition to the narrative s high level of immersion, the works of Mozart, which are properly

In the film, Mozart is illustrated as the character which always has the fear of the presence of a father.
This trait of Mozart in Amadeus is based on the real relationship between Mozart and Leopold. In
reality, Mozart had never received formal education. Instead, he was only educated by his father until
he became an adult. (S.Y. Lee) Upon historical researches about real Mozart, it is not surprising why
Mozart in Amadeus is portrayed like a child dependent on his father

Erikson and Goffman on American Identity Essay
When foreigners think of America, they think of McDonald s, the Statue of Liberty, Hollywood film
stars, and the list goes on. In terms of Americans, people associate Texans with cowboy boats,
Californians with surfboards, and New Yorkers with a snobbish grin on their face. It is true that all
these things represent America in one way or another, but what exactly is American identity? Erikson
s analysis on American identity has drawn attention to four topics: Mom, adolescent, boss, and
machine. He links all four topics together by using the myth of John Henry Hero. Goffman, on the
other hand, develops dramaturgical analysis to understand human behaviors. He sees men as actors
with different roles and these actors have to perform to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second, parents do not satisfy everything the child demands, and the child feels neglected and grows
distant from his parents. John Henry left his parents because his parents fed the dogs before they fed
him. Third, he left because he was sure that he could take care of himself. John Henry took into his
grave believing that a man counts only as a man (Erikson, P. 299). Hence, in another point of view, he
abandoned his parents just as Erikson says, it was the child who abandoned the mother, because he
had been in such a hurry to become independent (Erikson, P.296). This abandonment also lead to
another factor rejections to intimate feelings. Erikson finds not only the sorrow of having been
abandoned but also the fear of committing to deep emotions (Erikson, P.301) in cowboys because
there is a mental barrier in knowing that they have abandoned their mothers and have been abandoned
by her. Cowboys, thus, are usually rather lonely people. Their job will not let them see their family nor
their friends very often. They are the man without roots, the motherless man, the womenless man
(Erikson, P.299). The nonsense folk songs offer a funny yet sarcastic view of cowboys life they are not
bounded by relationships because they are not allowed to do so. This lifestyle,

The Civil Argument Of Epistemology
For decades, there has been an open deliberation over whether knowledge is intrinsic or if it springs
itself from life experiences: the civil argument of epistemology. Epistemology is the investigation of
knowledge and its techniques and legitimacy. Individuals from philosophers to scientists to
psychologists have argued their perspectives, yet even today the contention is not yet settled.
Personally, I believe that it bodes well for knowledge to originate from experiences. Three
philosophers that are solid proponents for the belief that knowledge is derived from experiences are
Gaston Bachelard, Immanuel Kant, and John Locke. One of the great epistemologists was Gaston
Bachelard who was more commonly known as a philosopher of science. ... Show more content on

Kant concurred with empiricists that concepts without perceptions are empty (lonestar). He
acknowledged that concepts and ideas cannot constitute knowledge alone and that innate ideas do not
constitute knowledge at all. This brought about his conviction that there must be experience(s) in life
for there to be knowledge. His theory was that there are two sorts of reasoning to acquire knowledge:
posteriori reasoning and priori reasoning. The posteriori reasoning depends upon experience in the
world that provides us with information. For example, if I said that Barack Obama was the president
of the United States in 2010, I would only know that this is true through experience; I would not be
able to determine this through an analysis of the concepts of president or Barack Obama. In contrast, a
priori reasoning does not rely on experience to inform it, but to create the knowledge. Kant believed
that with priori reasoning, the dynamic mind relates and understands experiences in terms of causes
and effects where an event takes place and causes an experience to happen with the effect of
knowledge being gained. Kant s crucial insight here is to argue that experience of a world as we have
it is only conceivable if the psyche provides an efficient organizing of its representations; the mind
makes deductions prior to experiences, but can only truly experience something in the event that it
obtains knowledge from the

Leadership In The Black Community
Has the black community ever had a black leader or leaders? In 2015 I feel the black community
needs leaders to guide us to a higher place in society in the 2nd millennium. But first the black
community need to understand what a true leader is and how to embrace a true leader. Also The Black
community has to understand what previous leaders have done for us in the past to continue to push
the envelope further for us to have opportunities we have now. 2015 is the year we try to get a council
of new leaders to help the black community in areas we are lacking due the fact we are not being well

The Thin Red Line Presents War
We return to the present and we see Ryan questioning whether he was a good man and made the most
of his life for the sake of those soldiers who laid their life down for his. His wife reassures Ryan that
he honored their memory. The ending presents itself as a perfect ending, even though many died for
Ryan he did not squander the opportunity granted to him and he upheld their memory. In the end it
was a perfect Hollywood blockbuster, everything happened for a reason and it was a beautiful story
filled with friendship, hardship, loss, and love. Those are the characteristics we use to romanticize
war, a journey full of loss, hardships, and friendship that in the end there is peace. The Thin Red Line
presents war in a different light the entire premise is the war. There are varying voices narrating
throughout the movie, they speak of war as the destruction of the human soul. War is characterized as
a game of chance where your life hangs on only chance. The movie begins with a voice saying, What
s this war in the heart of nature? Why does nature vie with itself? it appears like a metaphor for human
life and why do humans war one another. We then see a village in the pacific with natives living a
simple life undisturbed then we see Witt and another soldier who appear to be living with the natives.
Witt then talks about his mother dying and realizes that dying peacefully is where immortality is
hidden. This presents that there is no beautify in war, as no death is

  • 2. The Olympic Ice Hockey Team Winning A Game The Miracle on Ice was more than just the United States Olympic Ice Hockey Team winning a game. The win for the United States had major political impacts on the United States, the Soviet Union and the Cold War. The Soviet Union entered the Lake Placid games as the favorite, having won the last four ice hockey gold medals all the way back to the 1964 games. In the four Olympics following their 1960 loss to Team USA at Squaw Valley, Soviet teams had gone 27 1 1 and outscored the opposition 175 44. In match ups against the United States, the total score over those games was 28 7 with Russia outscoring the US. The Soviet players, some were active duty military, played in an elite league in world class training facilities. Many of the Soviet players were seasoned veterans with a lot of experience in international play. The United States head coach, Herb Brooks, conducted tryouts in Colorado Springs in the summer of 1979. Of the 20 players who eventually made the final Olympic roster, Buzz Schneider was the only one returning from the 1976 Olympic team. Nine players had played under Brooks at the University of Minnesota, which included Rob McClanahan, Mike Ramsey, and Phil Verchota. Boston College and University of Minnesota were perennial rivals in college hockey and the hostility spilled over from some of these players when they ended up being teammates on the US Olympic team during the first few months. These challenges include trying to increase sales in nations that already offer well known brands of motorcycles at cheaper costs. Besides having to compete with local brands, in places such as Europe each specific country may have different preferences on styling, size, and the type of performance. Other obstacles include high tariffs in some emerging markets, potential for piracy and counterfeiting of designs, environmental and regulatory sanctions due to high greenhouse gas emissions, and the need lower carbon footprint standards. With respect to Europe Harley could expand the presence of its HOG club as well as begin to offer lines of motorcycles geared toward European tastes that are lighter weight, smaller, and faster. They have already shown signs of doing this with the purchase MV Augusta Group in 2008. For the nation of Japan Harley can expand its local distribution network and subsidiary. An introduction of the HOG club there may also boost interest in the brand. The company can also focus on cutting production costs and offering their motorcycles at lower prices to compete with the local Japanese brands that are considerably cheaper. It would also be wise for Harley to maintain its path of lowering its greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint to appease the Japanese government and to appeal to the Japanese public. Question 4 Harley can compete against firms such as Lifan and Zongshen in a few ways. In one regard Harley can stick to its core business of heavyweight bikes and attempt to rely on its brand name and history to attract customers. These bikes would be more expensive and Harley probably would not make large gains within these markets. Simultaneously Harley could also attempt to open local assembly plants, distribution networks, and subsidiaries to utilize the same low cost labor as their emerging competitors. As they did in Europe, Harley could also purchase one of these competitors to adhere to the tastes of the local market. Harley should look ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through their studies of polar bear scat and video surveillance, the biologists have come to the conclusion that polar bears are beginning to adopt a new form of food. They are beginning to eat from the abundant source of snow geese. The snow geese have been traveling farther north in the spring to nest in the grassy, arctic marshes. Here they lay their eggs, vulnerable to predators such as the polar bear. Due to the global warming, the arctic ice has begun to melt at a much faster pace. This means that polar bears have less time and less ice to hunt for seals. The polar bears have always relied on seals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Pilate As A Positive Figure In The Bible The Bible is interpreted in many different ways. Depending on who wrote the chapter, when the story was written, and it depends on the person who is reading the story. All of these factors contribute to how we read the Bible. Depending on the context of the situation, Pilate may be portrayed as a negative, neutral, or positive figure in the Bible. Warrens Carter s book, Pontius Pilate: Portraits of a Roman Governor, states, Gundry sees the first sign of this Christianizing in Matthew s presentation when Pilate asks the crowd if they want to release Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Christ? (Carter 9). This source claims that Pilate is one of the first Christians and makes an effort to save Jesus from being crucified. I argue that Pilate is seen as a negative figure in the Bible because The standard way of thinking about Pilate s role as a figure in the Bible has it that Pilate is seen as a positive figure. Pilate is the governor and holds most of the power, he is aware of Jesus s innocence before crucifying him, and he is naïve to think that his hands are cleaned of Jesus s blood. Pilate is seen as a negative character because of many different reasons. Pilate is not a normal citizen of Judaea; he was the governor. He had the power to approve or disapprove any decision the city wanted to make. Some sources claim that Pilate did not want to start a riot or that he fell into peer pressure, but a strong leader should have been able to stand up for the right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Law and physic are the good wits and he thinks that philosophy is not petty good. He is of the view that divinity is the basest and all the necromantic books are glorious. He withdrew God and sells his soul in the hands of Lucifer, Prince of Hell. He has also committed a fling with Helen of Troy and become eternally loathsome. It does not have any good start, ending as well as middle. Just because of this the unity of action with the chain of effect and cause is badly interrupted. • 11. The Rocking-Horse Winner The world has always been full of hatred, war, and strife, but the one thing holding us together is love. One of the main concepts to happiness is being loved and loving others. In my 17 years of living, I have seen and experienced love on multiple occasions. The love a couple has for each other. A love of God. A love of friends and family. Even the love a pet has for it s owner. A love that sticks out the most is the love a parent has for their child and vice versa. He thought the more he rode his rocking horse, the more money he would make, to please his mother. He was so stressed about betting on the horse that would win, he became ill. • 12. The Odyssey, The Ramayana Of Valmiki, And The Bhagavad Gita War has been treated as an acceptable response to political or personal disagreements. The Bhagavad Gita shows how a person can have a moral dilemma when faced with the prospect of fighting against people who are familiar. This story explains how, if there are no other options available to solve a dispute, then violent conflicts are acceptable responses. The use of armed conflict to resolve any political or personal disputes has been a theme that is visible in famous warrior stories. The Odyssey, The Ramayana of Valmiki, and The Bhagavad Gita all deal with conflicts of war and how it can affect the lives of those involved. Violence as a solution to combat any disagreements or problems has been viewed as noble and necessary in many stories. Armed conflict and violence has an effect on everyone involved and the aftermath can be just as destructive as the initial fighting. The characters in these stories are defined by their status as a warrior and hero. A man s ability to be successful in battle has been praised in these stories. Odysseus and Rama are both viewed as strong heroes and they have been praised for the violent actions taken in order to solve the situations in their lives. The Swatch Group Essay examples The Swatch Group: Competing In An Increasingly Global Market For Watches Nicholas Hayek and Ernst Thomke formed the Swatch Group (the Group) in 1983 by merging two bankrupt watch making groups. The merger gave the Group ownership of many of the Switzerland s dominant watch brands. Swatch, their first product initiative, was so successful that it helped pull the squandering Swiss watch industry out of a slump. In June 1999, with its 14 brands, the Group was the world s largest watch manufacturer (in value terms). Let us look at several key figures relating to the Group and its industry at the time the case was written: ¡ In 1999, the Swiss watch industry produced over 34 million units. Over 90% of these watches were exported to markets outside of Switzerland. ¡ Although they were responsible for only 7% of the world s production, Swiss watches generated 51% of the global value. ¡ The Swatch group, with its 14 brands, was the world s largest manufacturer (also in value terms). ¡ Nearly 90% of the Group s profits were generated by four brands: Omega, Swatch, Tissot, and Rado. These brands competed in the following segments: luxury, basic, middle, and high range (respectively). ¡ The Group s prestige, luxury, and top ranged brands were third in global market share at 14% (behind Rolex at 28% and Vendome at 20%). ¡ The Group s gross sales and net profits had increased by 7.1% and 7.5% respectively in 1998. ¡ The Group s US market share was under 3% in 1998. We can draw several conclusions based on these and other figures presented in the case. First, it is clear that the Group s financial performance was strong. They managed to derive the most value from the fewest units of production, a luxury attributed to the high prices the Group charged for its products. As such, they had an advantage over other manufacturers whose low price points generated lower returns. Next, it is clear that exports were important for the Group ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sugar Act (1764) strongly affected American s trading in which their oceanic vessels and cargos could be inspected by the British Navy and might be confiscated if the paper and the goods that being transported were in disagreement. Currency Act (1764) restricted colonial governments to print their own paper money. These two acts put some colonists in anger but they were not enough to result in civil disorder until the Stamp Act was passed. Teachers must be completely trained before trying to carry at a school. Six of the twenty eighty states became legal after the tragic Sandy Hook shooting. Thirty three states tried to pass the bill to carry in schools through legislation but only five were able to do such. Teachers are known to say that they take it deeply personal when a shooter messes with their students. Utah is the easiest of all states for teachers and everyone to carry a gun. No fatal shootings have occurred in Utah since the day teachers have been allowed to carry guns in school over a decade ago. The Gun Violence Prevention Center is trying hard to disarm teachers and other Americans alike. Nursing has been striving to become a research based profession since the Briggs Report (1972) and the lack of apparent integration of research findings into nursing practice has been lamented consistently ever since (Walsh and Ford, 1989). As long ago as 1989 the Department of Health (DoH), in their Strategy for Nursing stated; All clinical practice should be founded on up to date information and research findings. Practitioners should be encouraged to identify the needs and opportunities for research presented by their work. Research is fundamental to achieving evidence based practice in nursing. Evidence based health care aims to promote clinical and cost effective care/treatment through the explicit, conscientious, and judicious use of the currently available best evidence from research to guide decisions (Sackett et al, 1996). Recently, there has been an increasing emphasis on evidence based practice. The NHS information strategy, the development of the NHS net and the National Electronic Library for Health all testify to the NHS commitment of bringing research evidence closer to clinical decision makers (Thompson et al 2001). Journal based initiatives are also available such as Evidence Based Nursing (Cullum et al. 1997) and Clinical Effectiveness in Nursing (Newell 1997). It is through the presence of affluence that a nation is capable of focusing not solely upon survival, but the development and proliferation of culture, of which art is a central element. The Greek and Roman Empires will be explored from this perspective. Herein, the way in which the power of these two empires was exemplified through the art they were capable of producing will be explored in depth herein. As will be demonstrated, the substantial cultures each nation developed, in concert with the art therein, were supported through the power of the nation states of Greece and Rome. The Roman conquest of the Greek East resulted in the beginning of a substantial period of acculturation. At the time, the Roman city state was considered relatively primitive, however, upon having taken the Greek East, took much from Hellenistic culture. The successful conquest of this region demonstrated the military and economic superiority of Rome over Greece. The fact that a younger nation, that of Rome, was capable of conquering a more ancient civilization demonstrated the rapid military progress realized by the nation. The borrowing of much of the culture that had been defeated was an oddity from a historical perspective. Generally, when a nation conquered another, the culture of the victorious nation would eclipse that of the conquered peoples. The reverse was realized in the Roman conquest over Greece through the superior cultural development of Greece over Rome at the time in the 2nd century B.C. Prior to the conquest of the Greek East, much of what would become Roman culture would have been considered to be excess. The cities of Greece, such as Classical Athens, had a refined high culture, contrasting sharply with the lesser cultured Roman cities. The high culture of Greece, as discussed above, allowed for the development of a form of art that was applied to both pottery and the equipment of war, with this equipment failing in the face of Roman military might and ... Nearly all governmental organizations adopt this form of organization to some extent and weber claimed they were capable of achieving the highest efficiency. Below are draw backs of bureaucracy concepts: (a) Impersonality can ensure a common level of treatment but may also lead to stereotyping behavior and lack of responsiveness to individual incidents. From these experiments, the final core conclusions that the researchers reached were that the experimental variables such as incentive payment had little effect, while that the unmeasured quality of human relations of workers to management and peer group was responsible for most output improvement (Gale, 2004). 3.1 ADVANTAGES OF THE HAWTHORNE EXPERIMENTS In the past, managers considered workers as machinery that could be bought and sold easily. To increase production, workers were subjected to long hours, miserable wages and undesirable working conditions. The welfare of workers and their need were disregarded. The Hawthorne studies helped in shaping transformations in many areas of human relations and brought about radical changes in organizational behavior. The traditional popular belief that increasing output of an organization was directly related to increasing workers wages was disproved. Experiments conducted by Mayo proved that there were more than economic factors that improved efficiency. Consequently, human relations were a key component to improve organizational output as evidenced from tests conducted. Many states have a specification for open graded friction courses and asphalt treated permeable bases that may be used in specifying mixes for porous asphalt pavements. (U.S. Department of Transportation, 2015). An added advantage to using porous asphalt is that it does not need proprietary ingredients. It also does not require the contractor to have special paving equipment or skills other than those needed to place normal asphalt. With the proper information, most asphalt plants can easily prepare the mix and general paving contractors can install it. State specifications should be checked to see if they abide by the key properties shown in Table 1. Table 1. Normal properties and characteristics of asphalt surface layer. After one world war, great financial fallout, and another world war to follow, the twentieth century was already shaping out to be a handful. When the Great Depression was coming to an end and the economy was trying to turn around, jobs started opening up and a new wave of immigrants came into New York, the Puerto Ricans. For some the American dream was to come to America and start a new life, but for others already here, it was about making it big in show business. West Side Story , a twentieth century musical, was greatly influenced by the immigration during that time. Before West Side Story was written, there were some major events that occurred. For instance, in 1914 America entered WWI. Then in 1920, women were given the right to vote and women s suffrage was a big focus of the twenties (Unstend 6). Soon after in October of 1929, the Great Depression followed, causing massive economic downfall to the United States. Families during that time were very poor, but millions still went to watch films at local theaters (Unstend 12). One technological advance was the first television which began in 1936 (Unstend 30). After the Great Depression hit, WWII came shortly after and America entered the war on December 7, 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor (Unstend 18). During this battle the Union Army captured 150 Confederate soldiers. Some historians speculate that Fort Wagner could have possibly been destroyed if Gillmore wouldn t have rested that day of the 10th when he drove the Confederates back to the Fort. Because Gillmore rested after the first battle it gave Taliaferro more time to reinforce the Fort for the following day where the Confederate army repelled an attack against the 7th Connecticut infantry. Although England was progressing towards a more powerful place in the world, its citizens seemed to be drifting in the opposite direction. Although religion is not explicitly mentioned in Hard Times, religious values were involved in the social structure of England. Social and government laws were based on religious morals. For example, The Bible specifically states, Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband (King James Version, 1. Corinthians. 7.3). The Bible notes that the husband should treat his wife with benevolence. When one thinks of marriage, they think of love and emotions. This certainly does not seem to be the case in Mr. and Mrs. Gradgrind s marriage. A perfect example of this is when Mrs. Gradgrind quotes on her deathbed, You must remember my dear, that whenever I have said anything, on any subject, I have never heard the last of it; and consequently, that I have long left off saying anything (Dickens 151). To expand this further, The Bible also notes that, Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh (Genesis, 2.24). In five year plans a major goal was to connect all villages (with population of more than 1,500 inhabitants) with rural road network; however, this was done through minimum needs program supporting employment creation and leading to waste and inefficiency. Most of the roads thus created did not meet quality standards because fiscal space was not adequate to accommodate both the demand for resources for rural roads and also the national highway network which was getting congested. Even in the case of power sector, village electrification was a priority so as to provide power for the farms, but not necessarily to households. Emphasis on connectivity, without improvements in overall economic efficiency meant unsustainable financial burden on the government budgets. Though I did not understand much of the book, I was able to take a couple of his ideas and really think about how I see photos. In the future, I intend to use these ideas when I look at photos. One of his ideas that I was able to understand is the way he looks at pictures. The other one is his second definition of punctum. The first of the two ideas that interested me the most was the way Barthes looked at photos. He did not say that he liked a photo because it had his favorite animal or color. He looked deeper into the photo. He looked to see what had caught his eye the most about a photo he enjoyed. He called the catching of his eye the punctum. Barthes described the punctum as, ... is that accident which pricks me... (Barthes 27). This prick didn t always hit him with every photo. Throughout the book, he described certain photos that I thought were interesting, but he did not enjoy them. An example of a photo that he didn t enjoy was the photo of the two nuns and three helmeted soldiers, which was photographed by Koen Wessing in 1979. The main reason that it didn t appeal to him was that it didn t have much of a, duality (Barthes 23) to it. Then there were photos that had caught his eye. Lincoln saw past the inequality of black and white and regarded equality and freedom above all as a basis for a united nation because he wrote the Gettysburg Address at a crucial time during the civil war to earn favor among freed slaves and to those opposed to slavery in the North and he decreed the Emancipation Proclamation as a stepping stone to achieve his ultimate goal. Lincoln had deep feelings on the subject of liberty. He knew it was a vital but delicate concept, which needed to be cared for. Nearly a ten years earlier, in the midst of agitation over the Kansas Nebraska Act, Lincoln had said in Peoria, Illinois: Little by little, but steadily as man s march to the grave, we have been giving up the old for the new faith. Nearly eighty years ago we began by declaring that all men are created equal; but now from that beginning we have run down to the other declaration, that for some men to enslave others is a sacred right of self government. These principles cannot stand together. They are as opposite as God and Mammon; and whoever holds to the one must despise the other. (1) Perhaps as a young man, Lincoln had done his share of useless labor to fulfill his quota. Lincoln did what was necessary and, in return, he expected others to do the same. His work ethic was key to his attitudes toward ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Controversial Aspects Of Government Regulation Regulating a variety of aspects of business and society is an old and often controversial aspect of government, particularly at the national level. Much of what the national government does, or fails to do, has an impact on individual citizens, private corporations and other business enterprises, agricultural producers and marketers, foreign governments, labor unions, and state and local governments. The first national regulatory efforts in the late 1800s were intended at punishment for, and the prevention of, abuses in the marketplace, antitrust violations, and price gouging. During the 20th century, government regulation became even more extensive, focusing not only on preventing certain kinds of practices, but also requiring that certain in service standards can and should be met. And the past 50 years, more than a dozen new regulatory agencies have been shaped at the national and state government levels, following the route of new regulatory statutes. Regulatory measures contact virtually every part of our lives. Some government actions are seemingly not linked to regulating private lives, but still indeed do so. These include local building codes and zoning laws; government housing loan programs with minimum income requirements cut off many inferior citizens from an ability to ... In terms of Americans, people associate Texans with cowboy boats, Californians with surfboards, and New Yorkers with a snobbish grin on their face. It is true that all these things represent America in one way or another, but what exactly is American identity? Erikson s analysis on American identity has drawn attention to four topics: Mom, adolescent, boss, and machine. He links all four topics together by using the myth of John Henry Hero. John Henry left his parents because his parents fed the dogs before they fed him. Third, he left because he was sure that he could take care of himself. John Henry took into his grave believing that a man counts only as a man (Erikson, P. 299). Hence, in another point of view, he abandoned his parents just as Erikson says, it was the child who abandoned the mother, because he had been in such a hurry to become independent (Erikson, P.296). This abandonment also lead to another factor rejections to intimate feelings. Erikson finds not only the sorrow of having been abandoned but also the fear of committing to deep emotions (Erikson, P.301) in cowboys because there is a mental barrier in knowing that they have abandoned their mothers and have been abandoned by her. Cowboys, thus, are usually rather lonely people. Their job will not let them see their family nor their friends very often. They are the man without roots, the motherless man, the womenless man (Erikson, P.299). • 49. The Civil Argument Of Epistemology For decades, there has been an open deliberation over whether knowledge is intrinsic or if it springs itself from life experiences: the civil argument of epistemology. Epistemology is the investigation of knowledge and its techniques and legitimacy. Individuals from philosophers to scientists to psychologists have argued their perspectives, yet even today the contention is not yet settled. Personally, I believe that it bodes well for knowledge to originate from experiences. Three philosophers that are solid proponents for the belief that knowledge is derived from experiences are Gaston Bachelard, Immanuel Kant, and John Locke. One of the great epistemologists was Gaston Bachelard who was more commonly known as a philosopher of science. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kant concurred with empiricists that concepts without perceptions are empty (lonestar). He acknowledged that concepts and ideas cannot constitute knowledge alone and that innate ideas do not constitute knowledge at all. This brought about his conviction that there must be experience(s) in life for there to be knowledge. His theory was that there are two sorts of reasoning to acquire knowledge: posteriori reasoning and priori reasoning. The posteriori reasoning depends upon experience in the world that provides us with information. For example, if I said that Barack Obama was the president of the United States in 2010, I would only know that this is true through experience; I would not be able to determine this through an analysis of the concepts of president or Barack Obama. In contrast, a priori reasoning does not rely on experience to inform it, but to create the knowledge. Kant believed that with priori reasoning, the dynamic mind relates and understands experiences in terms of causes and effects where an event takes place and causes an experience to happen with the effect of knowledge being gained. Kant s crucial insight here is to argue that experience of a world as we have it is only conceivable if the psyche provides an efficient organizing of its representations; the mind makes deductions prior to experiences, but can only truly experience something in the event that it obtains knowledge from the ...
