it could also be used to find out where the driver went during the lunch hour. For similar reasons,
privacy advocacy groups have opposed the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in
consumer items. RFID tags are small silicon chips equipped with tiny antennas that enable them to
communicate with RFID readers and track the location of items as they move. When placed on
individual products, they allow companies to tell exactly when a product leaves a store or learn more
about the actions of consumers buying the products. Designer Lauren Scott had planned to add radio

RFID tag sewn into a child s clothing could store vital medical information or track the wearer s

My First Voyage Henry Hudson
I, Henry Hudson, have had a reputation for exploring new ways and directions. As an English
explorer, I have felt the need to find the Northwest Passage and seek everything and every visual in it.
It is the beginning of 1607, and I am about to start my first voyage after getting the job of attempting
to perceive a smaller path to the riches of Asia from Europe via Arctic Ocean. I have obtained high
hopes for my commitments, and I am certainly not going to give up. I am acquiring high hopes after a
fresh, educational start after graduating from Harvard, but I did have to be a cabin boy for many years
in my childhood, from when I was born in 1565. Hopefully, my life will get a bit easier to handle as I
am preparing my first voyage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I honestly think that it was part of the Lord s act, as I would encourage the crew to pray everyday.
Eventually, spring came along, and the ice cleared up. Even though everything was starting to
develop, the crew was in bad shape, vomiting and coughing spit all over the place. I had a conflict on
my hands. It was either me continuing the journey to find the passage, or turning back home for these
people to get help. I was leaning towards the continuing side, but my son was in bad shape, so I
hesitated for a long time. A few months later, in June of 1611, much of my crew had mutinied, and I
knew I was going to be swindled. As a matter of fact, much of my crew left by getting on the large
vessel. I sent my son with them, because I wanted him to live for a long time. After that event, I was
only left with seven others, and it would only take until the end of that year to run out of food, and the
water in the river was too cold to drink. Much of the water was ice, and we were really in a tight gap.
A month later, my focus came off of the crew and I dozed off and hit the floor of the ship, blacking out

Social Issues Related to Smoking and Alcohol Consumption...
Alcohol consumption is linked to many harmful consequences for the individual drinker, the drinker s
immediate environment and society as a whole. There are many social consequences such as traffic
accidents, workplace related problems, family and domestic problems, and interpersonal violence.
Work
People with alcohol dependence and drinking problems are on sick leave more frequently than other
employees. In Great Britain, up to 25% of workplace accidents and around 60% of fatal accidents at
work may be linked to alcohol. drinking alcohol at work and hangovers may reduce productivity.
Performance at work may be affected both by the volume and pattern of drinking. Co workers

Also arguments over someone s drinking can cause family and relationship problems that may lead to
break up. To address this families may consider going to councilling to stop the alcohol abuse and also
work out any issues that have been the outcome of the constant alcohol abuse from a family member.
Link between alcohol and poverty?
Apart from money spent on drinks, heavy drinkers may suffer other economic problems such as lower
wages (because of missed work and decreased efficiency on the job) and lost employment
opportunities, increased medical and legal expenses, and decreased eligibility for loans. To address
this issue the government should invest in centers to inform people of the horrible outcomes of alcohol
abuse and also help the people who have been affected to get back on their feet.
Alcohol abuse could be costing the UK up to £6 billion a year in NHS bills, premature death, losses to
business and drink related crimes and accidents, it was claimed today.
A study by the Royal College of Physicians said drink related health problems could account for up to
12% of total NHS spending on hospitals, about £3 billion.
But campaigners said that with the estimated £3 billion lost through absenteeism, unemployment,
premature deaths and alcohol related crimes and accidents the total cost of excessive drinking is £6
billion.

American lives will be discussed. Further, an analysis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe that industrialization was generally beneficial to the lives of the American people and the
history of the United States. Several of the advantages are outlined in the above paragraph. Overall,
Americans enjoyed a higher standard of living and a longer life span, thanks to the Industrial
Revolution. ...before the eighteenth century there was no mechanism by which long term sustainable
growth could take place. By the mid nineteenth century such growth was an established fact of life:
for the first time rapid population increase was accompanied by sustained growth in income per
person. (More, C. 2000).
In this brief paper, we have discussed two elements of industrialization that positively affected
American lives and two elements of industrialization that negatively affected American lives. One of
these negative elements was the employment of children in the industrial arena. The second negative
aspect was that the roots of our environmentally challenged society stemmed from the Industrial
Revolution.
From a positive stance, American grew and prospered economically, and became a superpower on the
world stage. Laws governing child labor were enacted and in general the population became healthier
and enjoyed a longer life span.
We have also looked at whether or not industrialization was generally beneficial or detrimental to the

Soccer On The East Coast
It has been said that when one gets injured, one never realizes it until you look at the wounded body
part. No statement is more genuine than that. An individual forgets the details of how they got injured.
The if, how, and whys are only noticed later on when you look back and analyze what had occurred.
More often than not, a lot of different things are to blame. Could it be the slip and slide, the angle, or
just a personal mistake? For some reason, I believe it was the first one, and that could explain why I m
scared of slip and slides.
You must be asking yourself what could have possibly happened that led to this erratic fear of slip and
slides?
Soccer on the East coast is an enormous spectacle. Like football in the south and basketball in Indiana,
soccer in the fall is an attraction that closes towns and turns neighboring schools into blood rivals.
Conditioning begins in June, but the real season doesn t start until the third week of August when first
week commences. First week of practice is the most challenging and fulfilling. Friendships that last all
season, as well as team foundations, develop that first week. That first week defines your season
before you complete a pass or attempt a shot.
The first week is unmerciful. Three or four hour practices, two a days; the heat makes you question
your decision to play every minute of every day. That last Friday practice, however, always ends on a
softer note. The team pickup game, ice bath, slip and slide, and a bonfire

Greater Kansas City was chartered in 1964, started by two big brothers who are still involved in the

Rising Tide Summary
John M. Barry, author of Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How it Changed
America, communicates his fascination with the Mississippi River by using diction, imagery, and
syntax. Barry s word choice conveys the mechanical force of the river; his use of imagery the beauty,
and his use of syntax the unpredictability. Barry s command of rhetorical devices draws the reader in
and brings the Mississippi River to life. Using scientific prose, Barry reveals his deep interest in the
unusual physical properties of the river. Its natural characteristics are what sets it apart; the Mississippi
does not conform to standards set by other rivers. Instead, it exceeds most major rivers in variation,
depth, and volume. In fact, the Mississippi is so outstanding that theories and techniques that apply to
other rivers ... simply do not work on the lower Mississippi (Barry 25 28). Looking beyond its external
features, the river also contains an intricate internal system unlike any other. In addition to the
complicated internal circumstances that normally occur within rivers, the Mississippi also stands out
because of its size, its sediment load, its depth, variations in its bottom and its ability to cave in the
riverbank and slide sideways for miles (Barry 20 23). As he describes the unusual corporeal aspects of
the Mississippi, Barry brings to light his own wonder in the face of such a daunting natural force.
Characterizing the river with its physical properties allows

Youth Gangs
Youth participation in gangs actually decreased from 1996 to 2004, but the violence within these
gangs has not. Homicides committed by youth gang members still remain as a monumental problem
across the United States of America. The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
reported in its 2004 survey of youth gangs that there were an estimated 760,000 gang members that
year. Many of the kids affiliated with gangs come from lower income, single parent homes; therefore,
the youths of America often turn to gangs to fill the void of not being part of a family . To combat this
problem and save our youth from a life of malfeasance, the people of the communities of America
must take a stand against the negative influences that impact these youths.
Violence within Youth Gangs of America
The term gang can be associated with a number of different things but, for this paper, the term gangs
will be in reference to youth gangs; youth gangs are considered to consist of adolescents and young
adults from the ages of 12 to 24 (Decker and Howell, 1999, p.1). Gangs have been a normal part of
United States culture for centuries now, a sad but also, very true statement. What started out as a group
of friends wearing their favorite color and protecting their neighborhood from crime has turned into a
problem of epic proportion across the United States of America. In earlier years gangs were only a
problem for poor communities within the big cities. But during this day and age,

HAT TRICK
It was a cold winter night in bay city, perfect for a hockey game. My team was in bay city for a
hockey tournament. We the Kentwood Falcons were facing Kalkaska. I was on offence with Charlie
and Trevor. It was the first period, I had the puck. I skated up the ice, and I took a shot. The puck
soared through the air and into the net! GOOOOOOOOOOAL! I yelled there s one goal!
After that my friend Jack scored twice in one shift giving us a 3 to 0 lead. Jack was my team s lead
scorer, and I was a little jealous about that. T me and him are great friends.
Then the second period started. I was on a breakaway and I slid the puck into the net. Then me and
Charlie were on a breakaway. He was yelling PASS PASS . So I passed it to him. ... Show more

Charlie was always one of my good friends. We cooperate well and that s how we got our goals. When
Charlie scored I was happy and when I scored he was happy. At the end of the period my coach put
me on defense. I said coach I have 2 goals why do I have to play defense! . But I ended up playing
defense. My team scored 2 goals while I was on defense, and it became 7 to 1. Then my teammate
Dominic shot one from the red line and it trickled into the net.
It was late in the third period I had the puck and was skating forward. It felt like everything was in
slow motion. I skated by the defense. Then the puck came off my stick, and it slowly moved toward
the net. It took a bounce and the goalie tried to block it, but he missed it! I knew it was going into the
net. Then it went into the net. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! HAT TRICK! I
screamed I did it I did it!
My team gathered around me and celebrated. I was so excited I was jumping up and down with joy!
All the blood sweat and tears were worth it! The stands erupted with cheers. We finished the game and
won 9 to 1. I said guys (and girl) we did it, we won. Then the stands once again erupted with cheers!
After that we went back to our hotel, went swimming, and ate lot s of pizza. That was one of the

Persuasive Essay About Rugby
I believe that the old English sport, Rugby, should make it s big return in schools as it would help
spark a new passion for something that has faded away for almost 100 years since the last game our
country has ever won medals in this Olympic sport.
For years, Rugby has been a neglected sport in the United States until recently it is now the nation s
fastest growing sport with over 1.2 million registered participants across the country.
Rugby may not be that popular here in the United States of America as of now, but it is very popular
in Europe and some parts of Asia. Also, Rugby has been in a few major events like the
Olympics, making it an Olympic sport which was introduced into the Olympics in the year 1900, until
its unfortunate end in 1924 where our national rugby team had won gold ... Show more content on

There are players that joined from the fear of the dangers of American football and saw rugby as a
safer alternative to football, despite the few changes that made rugby the modern version which is
played today.
Rugby has many similarities as differences with American football like the pads and referee which
was stated before. Some similarities between the two are the lines of scrummage or most commonly
known in the united states as the line of scrimmage, where the two teams are face to face with each
other, the difference in football is that the ball is thrown backwards and then given to the quarterback
which can be thrown forward. In rugby the player number 9 rolls the ball in the scrum where 8 players
bind onto each other and push forward so the team hook can use their leg to swipe the ball back
towards their team where they can pass to the outside players, known as wings, and those players can
run downfield and score a try. In rugby a scrum consists of the 8 forwards, such as props, a hooker,
locks, flanks, and the 8 man. They push each other forward to gain the ball, when the ball is in
possession they can pass the ball

A Different Perspective On Foreign Affairs
Tony Abbott, John Howard and Kevin Rudd each have a different perspective on foreign affairs, but
there is also a common thread to their approach. In the following paper I compare and contrast a
speech made by each of them concerning foreign affairs and note the large similarity of ideology
between each of them. All speeches support a strong relationship with the United States of America
and active engagement in international affairs. I argue that they differ only in the nuance of emphasis
although there is some evidence of traditional realist and liberal approaches to international politics.
Howard concentrates on pragmatic state to state engagement for the benefit of Australians. Abbott
focuses more on building up the military and physical security. Rudd is the only one of the three to
emphasise that Australia s foreign engagement should be for the benefit of others, as well as Australia.
Overall, however, the speeches demonstrate a greater commonality of purpose and direction than they
do divergent opinions. I argue the resulting stability of foreign policy engagement benefits not only
Australia, but the rest of the world.
The first speech of the three was given by John Howard. Howard begins his speech by describing the
wide ranging help Australia is providing to foreign countries through defence force medical aid, the
electoral commission advice and treasury counselling (Howard 2004: 2 3). Howard describes the help
Australia gives abroad as practical, broad and

G Sabrinus Research Paper
Alex Christensen 10/21/2014 Bio 203 Lab Glaucomys sabrinus: Habit and Geography/ Forms and
Function One of the most biologically complex organisms across all ecosystems is the northern flying
squirrel (G. sabrinus). In the most general sense, the northern flying squirrel can be labeled an
occupant of boreal conifer and mixed forests and an organism who has developed the ability to glide
from tree to tree (Smith et al. 2011, Thorington and Santana 2007, Weigl 2007). This basic overview
of the G. sabrinus, however, does not even begin to show the complexity of this organism s lifestyle
and the various functions that allow it to survive. This organism also serves as a very precise indicator

Small tree squirrels like the Sciurini are very good leapers and use the ability to jump from tree to tree
to avoid predators, however, small tree squirrels are unable to leap as far as larger tree squirrels so the
ability to glide is more advantageous to smaller squirrels then to larger ones (Thorington and Santana
2007). Also, due to the fact that smaller squirrels reach lower velocities upon falling, smaller squirrels
would be safer if such a situation occurred and they would be less likely to become injured
(Thorington and Santana 2007). Due to these factors, the conclusion that northern flying squirrels
evolved from small squirrels is justified. Overall, the evolution of gliding in small tree squirrels allows
them to more successfully avoid predators, find food more quickly, and increases the safety of the
squirrel as it moves around its habit (Thorington and Santana 2007). The anatomical manifestation of
this evolution is the patagium which is lined with muscle called the platysma II extending from the
wrist to the body and from the body to the ankle (Thorington and Santana 2007). Unlike other flying
squirrels, the northern flying squirrel does not possess what is called an uropatagium which extends
from the ankle to the tail, despite this, G. sabrinus is a very adept glider. Another adaptation that is

What Is The Tone Of Oranges By Gary Soto
In the poem Oranges by Gary soto, it follows the sacrifices that a young boy makes to ensure that his
lover is happy. Gary soto uses a nostalgic tone to emphasize that sacrifice is necessary in love. The
larger issues throughout this whole poem is that gratitude from strangers can make someone else s day
amazing. Additionally, this is the speaker s first date ever in his life, so he is extremely nervous and
wants everything to go fine. The poem is a free verse with no firm beat following the lines of the
poem. The lines are mostly comprised of enjambment lines, so there is no real end to them. The
speaker starts his reflection off with 2 examples of alliteration. The speaker is remembering his first

The author is including this to contrast with the cold and dark setting of the poem. The girl is the light
to the boy and she can guide him through this frost. The speaker also mentions about him hearing the
Frost cracking / Beneath [his] steps, [his] breath / Before [him], then gone (5 7). The author includes
this section, so that the reader will have an exact feeling on how the setting is for the speaker. In the
light of the author adding in an onomatopoeia to the poem, Soto describes the class difference between
the speaker and his date. The reader can interpret that the girl comes from a wealthy family, since she
can keep on her porch light all the time. And that she can take care of herself and a pet. The reader
learns about the pet when he walked toward / Her house, the one whose / Porch light burned yellow /
Night and day, in any weather. / A dog barked at me (8 12). This just continues to emphasize that the
speaker wants his date to go without any troubles, so that they can live as a happy couple. The couple
meet up together, the couple go to a drugstore, and the couple eat their snack together (Anaphora). As
a matter of fact, the speaker goes on how he and his date went to a drugstore and how they went ahead

History of Rock and Roll
INTRODUCTION
Rock and Roll started after the year 1955 with its roots being in Blues,
Gospel, and Jazz. This influenced vocal music, which was popular with the
African American population. Hep Harmony which added rhythm and harmony was sung by groups
such as The Mills Brothers and the Ink Spots .
Small Swing Bands or Jump Bands featured saxophone soloists and repeated phrases. These city style
blues featured singers such as Joe Turner, Dina

John Lennon (10/9/40 12/8/80), led the Beatles as the lead singer and songwriter. Also writing the
songs for the Beatles was Paul McCartney (6/18/42 present). George Harrison (2/25/43 present) added
to the sounds of the Beatles.
In 1962, Ringo Starr (7/7/40 present) became the drummer for the band. They were now known as
The Beatles, (the Fab Four).
Their first song Love Me Do was recorded in 1962, after Ringo joined the band. In 1964, the Beatles
invaded the United States, by bringing their music here and driving the crowds wild. The Beatles
bridged the generation gap and language barriers. They were trend setters, with their style of dress and
hair changing the face of the young people. They also influenced the use of hallucinogenic drugs,
Indian music, and Eastern mysticism.
The Beatles last concert was in San Francisco in 1966. The band broke up in 1970. Lennon went on to
record solo albums and with his wife, Yoko Ono.
McCartney went on to form Paul McCartney and Wings, with his wife, Linda.
Harrison and Starr also went on to do solo albums. Ringo also starred in some films. Rumors of a
reunion were believed until the murder of John Lennon in
1980.
Some of the groups influenced by the Beatles were The Who, Cream with
Eric Clapton, and Chicago Blues. They brought out sounds such as loud music,

These works of art and literature portray the scene of that remembered Christmas day when
Washington and his army set out to conquer to Hessian people. Although they have similarities, there
are some differences in these works that are nothing less than noticeable. Join me in observing the
similarities and dissimilarities in these pieces.
There are parallels in Shulman s poem and Leutze s painting and I would like to point them out. First,
how the water is represented in these two works are very much alike. In the painting, you can see that

The main difference in these two works is the disorder and movement. The painting by Leutze
expresses more of a chaotic scene while the Shulman s poem creates a slightly more composed
environment. Struggle is more evident in the painting. While the poem is serene and instills
confidence and excitement for battle in the reader, the painting depicts struggling men fighting for a
cause we are not quite certain of. Also, the feeling depicted in the painting is predominantly distraught
while the poem makes me feel the scene is filled with precise determination. Washington commands:
so go alight, crew, and win! (Shulman line 14). This is him telling them to go sneak, fight, and win the
battle. This makes evident some of the varying differences of these two works. You can see how in the
painting Washington is not promoting ideas or confidence in his crew like he is the poem (Leutze
Washington Crossing the Delaware). This is a leading reason in the difference of disorder. Also, the
painting shows ice as a major obstacle, while in the poem no ice is mentioned. This shows how there
is another element of conflict in the painting than in the written work which can add to the madness
happening. The poem depicts the brave, fearless leader watching the army he is leading and rather
triumphantly commanding them to go into battle and win (Shulman s Washington Crossing the
Delaware ). When the poem

Analysis Of 12 OClock High
The movie 12 O clock High was filmed and produced in 1949 directly after World War Two. This was
a critical moment in American history simply because this was the first time that America was the
greatest power globally. Due to this rise in international responsibility from power, patriotism soared
in the United States. Culturally films like 12 O clock High were produced highlighting important roles
that were played in the defeat of the Axis powers during World War Two. On a more extensive note,
the film displays what leadership influence tactics can be used to drastically turn a unit around during
a time of war. This unit, part of the American Army Air Force, is known as the 918th Bomber Group
located in England, during the year of 1942. At the beginning of the film, Col. Davenport was the Air
Commanding Officer with Lt. Col. Gately as the Air Executive Officer. However, General Savage had
to step in and relieve Col. Davenport of command after several major battle losses cause morale to fall
to an all time low. Additionally, Lt. Col. Gately is also relieved of command as Air Executive Officer
and placed as an aircraft commander due to his inability to fly missions and be a part of the team effort
. This is the major turning point in the movie as from this point forward the 918th Bomber Group
eventually becomes a brutal fighting force with the help Major Stovall who is the administrator for the
Air Commanding Officer. This paper will discuss the interactional framework:

Last Mile Health Research Paper
Africa is usually thought of a poor continent. A continent pitted by famine, droughts, floods, and
sickness. The last Mile Health charity is trying to help the outlook of health in Africa. They are trying
to get health care to the rural communities of West Africa, because of several reasons since health was
beginning to be worse by the years in the early 2000 s. At the end of the civil war in Liberia there were
only fifty doctors to treat the ill. If you lived in city areas you could have lived. If you lived in rural
areas you would have died needlessly, from easy to fix situations. Last Mile Health helps because they

A Visit to the Notre Dame Cathedral
The Notre Dame Cathedral is certainly one of the most beautiful locations in the world, as the city of
Paris as a whole and the building s surroundings contribute to making visitors acknowledge the
importance of this monument. Construction on the cathedral started in 1163 and was largely finished
by 1250, with most of its features emphasizing Gothic influences. The building s architecture, the
sculptures present in it, and the impressive stained glass all stand as reminders that the French
community invested most of its cultural values into the church at the time when it was constructed.
From the very first moment when entering the cathedral one is likely to be struck by the silence
dominating the massive interior. In spite of the somewhat annoying number of curious tourists (others
probably saw my curiosity just as annoying as the noise), the church manages to maintain its quiet and
peaceful nature. This is truly remarkable, taking into account that it is constantly filled with tourists
through visiting hours.
It is difficult to ignore the fact that the Notre Dame is one of most popular monuments in the world
and that many visitors prefer this particular building to the Eiffel Tower. Its popularity certainly makes
it difficult for one to feel the sacredness that it contains and that it was initially meant to put across.
The fact that so many visitors walk through its entrance every day diminishes its value somewhat,
especially considering that many of them fail to

Advantage and Disadvantage of Conditional Fee Agreements
COMMON LAW REASONING AND INSTITUTION RESEARCH ESSAY: STUDENT: Abdulla
Shafeeg Ali STUDENT NUMBER: 070391545 CANDIDATE NUMBER: 32188 3. Analyse the
advantages and disadvantages of conditional fee arrangements for legal aid. A conditional fee
arrangement is basically a form of risk sharing whereby if the lawyer loses the case, the client does not
have to pay. However, if the case is won, the lawyer can be recompensed through a success fee, which
is worked out as a percentage of his cost. In the US, many cases have been funded this way but in
English legal system conditional fee arrangement had been banned until the enactment of the Courts
and Legal Service Act 1990. Under the Access to Justice Act 1999 conditional fees form an important

Another area which could be hit is that of cases which have enormous public importance, but which
need large amounts of work, are difficult to win, and may attract relatively low levels of damages even
if successful. These include some types of action against the police and Government, such as
complaints by prisoners about their treatment. The Act does address these issues in that it provides for
cases in excluded categories to be funded in exceptional circumstances; it remains to be seen whether
this will be sufficiently flexible in practice. Another disadvantage is unfair trials. Where legal aid is
refused, a trial may prove to be unfair of one party is represented but the other is not. This is
potentially a breach of Article 6 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR), which
guarantees the right to fair trial. In Steel v UK (2005) (or common known as the McLibel Two), Ds
were environmental campaigners who were charged with defamation for disturbing leaflet criticizing
nutritional content of McDonald s fast food. Ds were refused legal aid because it is not generally
available for defamation cases. They were unrepresented (save for limited assistance from sympathetic
lawyers) whereas McDonald s was represented by a team of lawyers. Ds were found liable. They
challenged the fairness of UK proceedings in the European Court of Human Rights. The challenge
was successful. The European Court held that the Ds had not had a fair

Boys And Girls Club Research Paper
The Boys and Girls Clubs of America goes all the way back to 1860. A couple of women in Hartford,

behavior. From these perceptive observations arose, in time, a national cause. By 1906, The Boys and

Personality Change And Age Difference
Barbara Sarfo PSY 437 Advanced Research Method 07/20/2015 Personality Change and Age
Difference Does the age difference have something to do with people change in their personality? A.
Specific Aim The age an individual feels is related to changes in characteristic ways of thinking,
feeling, and behaving over time. As people aged, they become more mature and they approach thing
differently and that in a way has effects their personality either positively or negatively. The aim of the
study was to find out if age difference has anything to do with personality change. B. Introduction
Personality takes many shapes and forms and is affected by many factors. My understanding of
personality is simply a genetic and environmentally determined set of psychological traits that
influence our reactions in the world around us. Genetic because our parents possess a certain set of
psychological personality traits that we tend to have in common with them so therefore in my opinion
there are heritable personality traits. Personality is environmental because we each have our own
separate experiences in the world and these experiences help form our unique personality. Neo
Freudians such as Jung have given us a wide array of ideas of how they believe personality is
developed and formatted. Jung in particular has a very interesting take on personality. It is this theory
that I can most resonate with and apply to myself and even friends and family of mine. Current

Jacob Riis Research Paper
One evidence I used was how tenement life was before Jacob Riis and other reformers patched things
up. Living in tenements was extremely unformatable. Tenements were dirty and crowded. Another
evidence I used was how Jacob Riis fought for city dwellers. He wrote books and took picture and
published them so the public can see exactly what city dwellers went through. My third piece of
evidence is that our life is significantly better than the life of city dwellers in the late 1800s. These
three evidence support my thesis statement. They shows that life was difficult back in the late 1800s
but improved due to Jacob Riis writing and photographs. To develop my thesis statement, I used many
different resources to gather my evidence. Today our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before Riis picked up his pen and camera, our city was a very nasty place to live in. Garbage filled the
streets and children who didn t work or attend school roamed around in the midst of it, catching
bacteria or viruses. For them, it wasn t much better at home, where they most likely lived in a
cramped, dark room with another family. Because people were paid low wages, many young children
had to take on jobs, that usually took advantage of them, to support their family. Many people don t
realize it, but without Jacob Riis, our city would still be the way as I previously described. New York
would be known, not for it s beautiful city lights, busy streets, and other attractions but for the nasty
environment that envelops it. Thankfully, this is not the case and change in our society has occurred.
Jacob Riis is a photographer, news reporter, and author. By using his skills, Riis crafted books and
newspaper articles, completed with pictures to inform the public about the terrible conditions
immigrants and city dwellers suffered in. He also gave lectures to the public that aimed towards
getting the government and upper class involved in changing the city. Riis wrote and took pictures
about child labor. He depicted children working in unsafe conditions and were paid low wages. He
wrote about tenement life and the darkness and dirtiness that came with it. He also wrote about the

Alternative Sources Of Energy For Fossil Fuel
In this day and age, finding an alternate source of energy to fossil fuel is essential. Humans are using
up fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, faster than they can be made naturally. This means that there will
be a time when all of the fossil fuels will have been used to power . To prevent a world without
energy, many alternative sources have been harnessed. Six different pathways for energies were found:
solar power, biomass, geothermal power, hydropower, wind power, and nuclear power. All of these are
much better alternatives to fossil fuels, as they reduce carbon emissions. Carbon dioxide is one of the
greenhouse gasses in Earth s atmosphere, which when created in excess, causes things such as global
warming to occur. But when they are compared to each other, some seem better than others in many
different ways. Although wind and hydropower are both promising alternative energies, wind power
would be better for New Jersey, because it is space efficient, relatively cheap, and the turbines can be
placed almost anywhere.
Figure 1 in the diagram below, it simply shows how the wind turns the blades, which in turn help to
power the generator.
[Wind power would benefit New Jersey because it is space efficient.] Turbines are rarely seen on their
own, but the power that one turbine can produce is impressive to say the least. One 1.8 MW wind
turbine at a decent site can r 4,produce ove7 million units of electricity every year, that is enough to

A stonemason has his own set of tools that he uses to complete any form of stonework. But this does
not mean that Freemasons do not have tools of their own. Just because they do not lay bricks or work

Analysis Of Augustine s Augustine
Augustine is a sixteen year old boy, like all sixteen year olds he is going through puberty and trying to
figure out what love is. Augustine states, For as I became a youth, I longed to be satisfied with worldly
things, and I dared to grow wild in a succession of various and shadowy loves (24). Any young adult

difference between pure affection and unholy desire. He becomes ashamed of himself and goes into a

their parents try and tell them right from wrong but most teenagers have to learn from there own

the words more closely, he would not be in the trouble that he is in. Augustine turns to the Lord and

In entertainment, no matter if it is movies, music, or plays. One can almost always look in the story
line and find a hero. The hero is perceived to be the character that everyone looks to step forward in a

Heroes are heroes because they show exceptional amounts of courage, and they do it consistently on
the everyday basis. That is not possible to do. The extraordinary things that Beowulf and Sir Gowain
do are things that the average man would not do because of the lack of courage and confidence. That
is why heroes are who they are, the best of the best. They stick out from the crowd and that is why one
may feel like they deserve more than just the regular confidence that the average man gets, it is only
necessary. Being a hero is more of a mental challenge than anything else, because one has to believe
in oneself more than any other person can believe in them because whoever believes in the hero can
not possibly know and understand just exactly what the hero is going through. The other characters
will never know and understand why the hero faces the problems, defeats the problems, and
overcomes the obstacles that the hero faces. All that the characters and the people want in the stories is
for whom ever the hero is, they want that person to save them from the people or things that threaten
them. In other words, the people do no care so much about what the hero is going through, the people
just want the hero to deliver, so it is an absolute must for the hero s confidence to be above the average
person. This also applies for real life experiences for this day and age. The only difference is this is

Equity and Imperfect Transfer
Legal writing and credit For a trust instrument to be valid and effective, it must be properly
constituted. For a trust to be deemed as completely constituted, all of the relevant formalities must
have been satisfied by the settlor, hence the legal title of the property must transfer to the trustees. The
reason for a conveyance of property to the hands of trustee is explained in Milroy v Lord (1862) by
Turner L.J. is that a valid and effectual voluntary settlement will exist, when the settlor have done
everything which was necessary according to the nature of property comprised in the settlement,
which is to transfer that particular property to the trustee. This requirement of constitution of trust is

Descriptive Essay About Camp Wakeshma
Camp Wakeshma has something special about it and always has me wanting to stay longer. Since I
was 12 years old, I ve been going to Wakeshma every summer for a week. This camp is so simple yet
so fun and exciting. I m driving to camp with William Fulton and our moms when we turn onto Camp
Wakeshma Rd. and go under the huge sign reading the name. We arrive late to camp due to a baseball
tournament, but we check in and put our belongings in the cabin. William and I say our goodbyes and
go find the rest of our cabin. Afterwards we line up for dinner by the flagpole. Nobody could help but
realize one of our cabin mates lost an arm due to cancer. At night when we get ready for bed I see him
change his shirt revealing his scars. As I go to bed, I don t think much of it.
Today is a drag. Every year I can never sleep good the first night and this year it s no different. We do
our regular routine leading up to lunch and discuss more rules while standing at the flagpole. Tony, the
camp unit leader called our cabin to go in first and we made our way into the cafeteria. I stood atop of
the stage where our table sat and you could hear the doors whine as the hungry kids pass through.
Everyone is restless and excited for the first full day of camp. I m just as excited as everyone even
though I m one of the oldest campers. The cafeteria was like a giant school bus with rows of loud kids.
DINGGG the bell rings to capture everyone s attention. Tony announces we re having chicken bacon

I Love A Book Analysis
For as long as I can remember, I have loved reading. Even when I was just learning how to read in
elementary school, I enjoyed it. However, because of the heavier workload in college and needing to
work I do not have as much time to read leisurely as I would like. When I do get the opportunity to
read, I dive right in and read quickly as to fill myself until the next chance. For example, over
Christmas break I read a three book series in a little over twenty four hours because I craved reading
that much. As I start a book, I begin by getting a feel for the characters and by the half way point I am
in the same world as the book. I love feeling like I am a fly on the wall in a story: witnessing all the
events, hearing the things they say, following my favorite characters throughout their lives. When I
read I become so engulfed in the story that I hate for it to end, no matter how good the ending is.
When I was in elementary, I we used the Accelerated Reader program, otherwise known as AR, and
through that you could earn points for every book that you read and ... Show more content on

However my taste has shifted from young kids books to more young adult books. Some of my favorite
genres are romance, adventure, and dystopian novels. I love books that I can relate to either a
character or the story line. I also enjoy books that take me somewhere I have never been, whether that
is a location or a new frame of thought. My mother is one of my greatest reading influences because
she almost always has a book on hand but still manages to balance everything else in her busy
schedule. I hope to one day be able to accomplish all I need to do throughout the day and still get to
read quality books. Another thing I look forward to in life is hopefully being able to excite the children
in my classroom about reading. Even if I can just plant a few seeds in students that make them grow
and begin to love

Anne Frank Dynamic Character
Just like any fruit it ripens and grows through time so it is ready for the world.
The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett is a play about two Jewish families
(The Franks and the Van Daans) are living in a secret annex in Mr. Frank s old business building to
hide from the Nazi s. Anne Frank, younger sister of Margot (who is very lady like), is very talkative
and almost rebellious but through the play Anne is more polite; she is close to her father and distant
with Mrs.Frank. Anne is a dynamic character who matures as she reflects on her actions. In the
beginning of The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Anne is immature
and childish. Anne is unabashed; she prances around=the annex with no care and says things she ...

Essentially, Anne thinks before she speaks and acts. For example, on page ______ Anne claims
maturely, that she would like to be a writer. Anne is imagining herself in a realistic situation on which
she wants to become. When Anne is talking to Peter he explains how he doesn t believe in any
righteousness in the world. Anne detects Peter is sorrowful and explains, I still believe, in spite of
everything people are still good at heart, ( __) Anne as someone who now is careful about what she
says and believes in; she wants to benefit others. Altogether, Anne eventually becomes a practical
young lady by the end of The diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Anne
Frank is a dynamic character that matures as she reflects and realizes her actions. Throughout the play
Anne goes from naive to a level headed, thorough young lady. Anne messes with peters stuff like his
shoes and his cat at first. Nevertheless, at the end of the play Anne is trying to make Peter feel better.
Entirely, Anne Frank progresses to a ripened adult by the denouement of The Diary of Anne Frank by
Frances Goodrich and Albert

Analysis Of Arm Wrestling With My Father And Shooting...
The Inability to Recognize Different Types of Love
Both Arm Wrestling with My Father and Shooting Dad written by Brad Manning and Sarah Vowell,
respectively, portrays a damaged and rough relationship that a son and/or daughter holds with his
father. Although they both find themselves struggling, they are dealing with different things, Manning
is dealing with a physical bounding, while Vowell finds herself handling a more emotional and
communicative type of bonding. Eventually, both characters find themselves in a mature relationship
over time. The characters had similarities and also differences with their respective father. Throughout
the stories, both authors dig into the relationship between child and father and how it can be shaped
and changed over time.
The difference between the bounding and the way affection is shown it s critical. Manning find
himself with a physical and somehow of psychological while Vowell find herself with a more
emotional relationship with more communication. Manning mentions, We never communicated as
well in speech or in writing [...] (1, paragraph 2), the bounding between Manning and his father wasn t
emotional, instead a more physical and psychological, were Manning always felt like the inferior since
his father is the dominant and always beat him in arm wrestling. Basically, Manning s father
transmitted love to his son through competition, and through His [physical] words (1, paragraph 3). In
Vowell s life, his father is more in

The General Theory Of Crime
Historically, criminologists have separately studied the pattern and causes of criminal offending and
the pattern and causes of victimization (Piquero et al., 2005, p.55). This began to change when
criminologists recognized a strong relationship between offending and victimization. Scholars argue
that this relationship can be explained by a common underlying trait of low self control. Gottfredson
and Hirschi first introduced low self control as an explanation of offending in the General Theory of
Crime, and more recent studies have applied the theory to victimization. In this paper, we will first
discuss Gottfredson and Hirschi s General Theory of Crime as it applies to criminality. Then, we will
review the literature to see how their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also tend to engage in analogous criminal acts such as smoking, drinking, gambling,
irresponsible sex, and speeding in cars. In households where children are cared for and appropriately
disciplined, those children develop the self control needed, through socialization, to resist the easy
temptations offered by crime. This early developmental process is key in setting the stage for later life.
(McMurtry Curling, 2008)
Gottfredson and Hirschi strayed from Hirschi s previous theory that social control protected people
from participating in criminal activities in favor of the conception that self control, or lack thereof,
could be used to explain criminal behavior. According to the general theory of crime, crime occurs
through the following process: (1) an impulsive personality to (2) lack of self control to (3) the
withering of social bonds to (4) the opportunity to commit crime and delinquency to (5) deviant
behavior. Gottfredson and Hirschi suggest that those who engage in crime do so to obtain immediate
gratification. People with a propensity for criminal involvement are said to lack self control, or the
ability to delay short term desires. Theorists state that this lack of self control can be traced back to
early childhood when early indications of deviant behavior emerge. For those with low self control,
participation in deviant behavior continues

Role and Concept of Sleary s Circus in Hard Times
Hard Times is a Charles Dickens novel set in the social backdrop of the Victorian era during the
Industrial Revolution that took place during the 1850s. The ill effects of Victorian Utilitarianism are
upheld in this moralistic vision of the writer. Unlike most of his novels, Hard Times is not based in
London but in the red and black seemingly monotonous structures of Coketown. That being said, it
still realistically allows the reader to observe the systems and structures of society forced to face
various economic and social hardships. What preserves the novel as a social commentary is that the
struggles in life and human emotions are still relevant for these times .
The rise in capitalist ideals brought forth an age where the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though the circus is a commercial enterprise, it still feels more like a family than Grangrind s
household will ever manage to. Mr. Sleary thus, acts as a protector and though he feels compassion for
Sissy, he is aware that it is not economically viable for the company to keep her and therefore thinks
of more suitable alternatives like her continued education. Unlike Gradgrind who condemns his
daughter to an incompatible and unsuitable marriage. The circus as a whole with all its colours is a
great visual contrast to the image evoked by Coketown. It is not shrouded by the by product of its
labour, like the soot that coated the city. The circus, here, stands for all that is loyal and free.
Nonetheless, there is a certain disdain in which the gypsies are viewed by the educated classes, as
Bounderby puts it we are the kind of people who know the value of time, and you are the kind of
people who don t know the value of time . This is primarily because they cannot be restrained by the
laws and obligations of society. Dickens reiterates his own personal faith in those people, like the
gypsies by highlighting the presence of complete trust, emotions and faith as opposed to the doubt
prevalent in most of society, even with all the privileges and high standards of morality they seem to
possess. It is able to address issues like education that is only successful when

Hypoglycemia Research Papers
Hypoglycemia describes an abnormally low level of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Hypoglycemia is not
a disease in itself, rather it is a sign of a health problem. The aspect of this study is as followed:
Hypoglycemia has been a common clinical condition known to affect human development. Little has
been done to define the resultant brain biochemical alterations. A controlled study of hypoglycemia in
the newborn human infant is impossible, the infant rat was chosen as a model. During this experiment
hypoglycemia was induced once daily for 18 days following birth resulted in generalized diminution
of brain weight, cellularity, and protein content. The rate of formation of the myelin lipid sulfatide was
decreased, as was the quantity of cerebroside sulfatied in brains of hypoglycemic animals.
Phospholipids, gangliosides, and cholesterol were decreased only in proportion to the decrease in the
brain weight. Brain glucose and glycogen concentrations were low in the brains of hypoglycemic
animals, although ATP and phosphocreatine levels were not decreased. Damage of the brain in human
infants has been associated with neonatal hypoglycemia, particularly when not treated early and when
the infants are symptomatic. Neonatal hypoglycemia related to gestational age, size, ... Show more

I think the doctors should have ended the helpless (frail and weakened) rats in a better manor instead
of decapitation or soaking the baby rats in liquid nitrogen. My opinion of this article gave me a whole
other insight of hypoglycemia and brain development. I am a hypoglycemic patient; though I did not
inherit these genes from my mother, my father has a hereditary strand of diabetes in his family. After
reading this article and doing a tad bit more research I concluded I am having slight problems with the
overall function of my brain which is from the development of my

RFID tags are small silicon chips equipped with tiny antennas that enable them to communicate with RFID readers and track the location of items as they move. When placed on individual products, they allow companies to tell exactly when a product leaves a store or learn more about the actions of consumers buying the products. • 3. My First Voyage Henry Hudson I, Henry Hudson, have had a reputation for exploring new ways and directions. As an English explorer, I have felt the need to find the Northwest Passage and seek everything and every visual in it. It is the beginning of 1607, and I am about to start my first voyage after getting the job of attempting to perceive a smaller path to the riches of Asia from Europe via Arctic Ocean. I have obtained high hopes for my commitments, and I am certainly not going to give up. I am acquiring high hopes after a fresh, educational start after graduating from Harvard, but I did have to be a cabin boy for many years in my childhood, from when I was born in 1565. I honestly think that it was part of the Lord s act, as I would encourage the crew to pray everyday. Eventually, spring came along, and the ice cleared up. Even though everything was starting to develop, the crew was in bad shape, vomiting and coughing spit all over the place. I had a conflict on my hands. It was either me continuing the journey to find the passage, or turning back home for these people to get help. I was leaning towards the continuing side, but my son was in bad shape, so I hesitated for a long time. A few months later, in June of 1611, much of my crew had mutinied, and I knew I was going to be swindled. As a matter of fact, much of my crew left by getting on the large vessel. I sent my son with them, because I wanted him to live for a long time. After that event, I was only left with seven others, and it would only take until the end of that year to run out of food, and the water in the river was too cold to drink. Much of the water was ice, and we were really in a tight gap. A month later, my focus came off of the crew and I dozed off and hit the floor of the ship, blacking out and ... Alcohol consumption is linked to many harmful consequences for the individual drinker, the drinker s immediate environment and society as a whole. There are many social consequences such as traffic accidents, workplace related problems, family and domestic problems, and interpersonal violence. Also arguments over someone s drinking can cause family and relationship problems that may lead to break up. To address this families may consider going to councilling to stop the alcohol abuse and also work out any issues that have been the outcome of the constant alcohol abuse from a family member. Link between alcohol and poverty? Apart from money spent on drinks, heavy drinkers may suffer other economic problems such as lower wages (because of missed work and decreased efficiency on the job) and lost employment opportunities, increased medical and legal expenses, and decreased eligibility for loans. To address this issue the government should invest in centers to inform people of the horrible outcomes of alcohol abuse and also help the people who have been affected to get back on their feet. Alcohol abuse could be costing the UK up to £6 billion a year in NHS bills, premature death, losses to business and drink related crimes and accidents, it was claimed today. A study by the Royal College of Physicians said drink related health problems could account for up to 12% of total NHS spending on hospitals, about £3 billion. But campaigners said that with the estimated £3 billion lost through absenteeism, unemployment, premature deaths and alcohol related crimes and accidents the total cost of excessive drinking is £6 billion. ... Several of the advantages are outlined in the above paragraph. Overall, Americans enjoyed a higher standard of living and a longer life span, thanks to the Industrial Revolution. ...before the eighteenth century there was no mechanism by which long term sustainable growth could take place. By the mid nineteenth century such growth was an established fact of life: for the first time rapid population increase was accompanied by sustained growth in income per person. (More, C. 2000). In this brief paper, we have discussed two elements of industrialization that positively affected American lives and two elements of industrialization that negatively affected American lives. One of these negative elements was the employment of children in the industrial arena. The second negative aspect was that the roots of our environmentally challenged society stemmed from the Industrial Revolution. From a positive stance, American grew and prospered economically, and became a superpower on the world stage. Laws governing child labor were enacted and in general the population became healthier and enjoyed a longer life span. • 6. Soccer On The East Coast It has been said that when one gets injured, one never realizes it until you look at the wounded body part. No statement is more genuine than that. An individual forgets the details of how they got injured. The if, how, and whys are only noticed later on when you look back and analyze what had occurred. More often than not, a lot of different things are to blame. Could it be the slip and slide, the angle, or just a personal mistake? For some reason, I believe it was the first one, and that could explain why I m scared of slip and slides. You must be asking yourself what could have possibly happened that led to this erratic fear of slip and slides? Soccer on the East coast is an enormous spectacle. Like football in the south and basketball in Indiana, soccer in the fall is an attraction that closes towns and turns neighboring schools into blood rivals. Conditioning begins in June, but the real season doesn t start until the third week of August when first week commences. First week of practice is the most challenging and fulfilling. Friendships that last all season, as well as team foundations, develop that first week. That first week defines your season before you complete a pass or attempt a shot. The first week is unmerciful. Three or four hour practices, two a days; the heat makes you question your decision to play every minute of every day. That last Friday practice, however, always ends on a softer note. • 8. Rising Tide Summary John M. Barry, author of Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How it Changed America, communicates his fascination with the Mississippi River by using diction, imagery, and syntax. Barry s word choice conveys the mechanical force of the river; his use of imagery the beauty, and his use of syntax the unpredictability. Barry s command of rhetorical devices draws the reader in and brings the Mississippi River to life. Using scientific prose, Barry reveals his deep interest in the unusual physical properties of the river. Its natural characteristics are what sets it apart; the Mississippi does not conform to standards set by other rivers. Instead, it exceeds most major rivers in variation, depth, and volume. In fact, the Mississippi is so outstanding that theories and techniques that apply to other rivers ... simply do not work on the lower Mississippi (Barry 25 28). Looking beyond its external features, the river also contains an intricate internal system unlike any other. In addition to the complicated internal circumstances that normally occur within rivers, the Mississippi also stands out because of its size, its sediment load, its depth, variations in its bottom and its ability to cave in the riverbank and slide sideways for miles (Barry 20 23). As he describes the unusual corporeal aspects of the Mississippi, Barry brings to light his own wonder in the face of such a daunting natural force. • 10. Youth Gangs Youth participation in gangs actually decreased from 1996 to 2004, but the violence within these gangs has not. Homicides committed by youth gang members still remain as a monumental problem across the United States of America. The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention reported in its 2004 survey of youth gangs that there were an estimated 760,000 gang members that year. Many of the kids affiliated with gangs come from lower income, single parent homes; therefore, the youths of America often turn to gangs to fill the void of not being part of a family . To combat this problem and save our youth from a life of malfeasance, the people of the communities of America must take a stand against the negative influences that impact these youths. Violence within Youth Gangs of America The term gang can be associated with a number of different things but, for this paper, the term gangs will be in reference to youth gangs; youth gangs are considered to consist of adolescents and young adults from the ages of 12 to 24 (Decker and Howell, 1999, p.1). Gangs have been a normal part of United States culture for centuries now, a sad but also, very true statement. What started out as a group of friends wearing their favorite color and protecting their neighborhood from crime has turned into a problem of epic proportion across the United States of America. Persuasive Essay About Rugby I believe that the old English sport, Rugby, should make it s big return in schools as it would help spark a new passion for something that has faded away for almost 100 years since the last game our country has ever won medals in this Olympic sport. For years, Rugby has been a neglected sport in the United States until recently it is now the nation s fastest growing sport with over 1.2 million registered participants across the country. Rugby may not be that popular here in the United States of America as of now, but it is very popular in Europe and some parts of Asia. There are players that joined from the fear of the dangers of American football and saw rugby as a safer alternative to football, despite the few changes that made rugby the modern version which is played today. Rugby has many similarities as differences with American football like the pads and referee which was stated before. Some similarities between the two are the lines of scrummage or most commonly known in the united states as the line of scrimmage, where the two teams are face to face with each other, the difference in football is that the ball is thrown backwards and then given to the quarterback which can be thrown forward. In rugby the player number 9 rolls the ball in the scrum where 8 players bind onto each other and push forward so the team hook can use their leg to swipe the ball back towards their team where they can pass to the outside players, known as wings, and those players can run downfield and score a try. • 13. A Different Perspective On Foreign Affairs Tony Abbott, John Howard and Kevin Rudd each have a different perspective on foreign affairs, but there is also a common thread to their approach. In the following paper I compare and contrast a speech made by each of them concerning foreign affairs and note the large similarity of ideology between each of them. All speeches support a strong relationship with the United States of America and active engagement in international affairs. I argue that they differ only in the nuance of emphasis although there is some evidence of traditional realist and liberal approaches to international politics. Howard concentrates on pragmatic state to state engagement for the benefit of Australians. Abbott focuses more on building up the military and physical security. Rudd is the only one of the three to emphasise that Australia s foreign engagement should be for the benefit of others, as well as Australia. Overall, however, the speeches demonstrate a greater commonality of purpose and direction than they do divergent opinions. I argue the resulting stability of foreign policy engagement benefits not only Australia, but the rest of the world. The first speech of the three was given by John Howard. Howard begins his speech by describing the wide ranging help Australia is providing to foreign countries through defence force medical aid, the electoral commission advice and treasury counselling (Howard 2004: 2 3). G Sabrinus Research Paper Alex Christensen 10/21/2014 Bio 203 Lab Glaucomys sabrinus: Habit and Geography/ Forms and Function One of the most biologically complex organisms across all ecosystems is the northern flying squirrel (G. sabrinus). In the most general sense, the northern flying squirrel can be labeled an occupant of boreal conifer and mixed forests and an organism who has developed the ability to glide from tree to tree (Smith et al. 2011, Thorington and Santana 2007, Weigl 2007). Small tree squirrels like the Sciurini are very good leapers and use the ability to jump from tree to tree to avoid predators, however, small tree squirrels are unable to leap as far as larger tree squirrels so the ability to glide is more advantageous to smaller squirrels then to larger ones (Thorington and Santana 2007). Also, due to the fact that smaller squirrels reach lower velocities upon falling, smaller squirrels would be safer if such a situation occurred and they would be less likely to become injured (Thorington and Santana 2007). Due to these factors, the conclusion that northern flying squirrels evolved from small squirrels is justified. Overall, the evolution of gliding in small tree squirrels allows them to more successfully avoid predators, find food more quickly, and increases the safety of the squirrel as it moves around its habit (Thorington and Santana 2007). The anatomical manifestation of this evolution is the patagium which is lined with muscle called the platysma II extending from the wrist to the body and from the body to the ankle (Thorington and Santana 2007). Unlike other flying squirrels, the northern flying squirrel does not possess what is called an uropatagium which extends from the ankle to the tail, despite this, G. sabrinus is a very adept glider. • 17. What Is The Tone Of Oranges By Gary Soto In the poem Oranges by Gary soto, it follows the sacrifices that a young boy makes to ensure that his lover is happy. Gary soto uses a nostalgic tone to emphasize that sacrifice is necessary in love. The larger issues throughout this whole poem is that gratitude from strangers can make someone else s day amazing. Additionally, this is the speaker s first date ever in his life, so he is extremely nervous and wants everything to go fine. The poem is a free verse with no firm beat following the lines of the poem. The lines are mostly comprised of enjambment lines, so there is no real end to them. The author includes this section, so that the reader will have an exact feeling on how the setting is for the speaker. In the light of the author adding in an onomatopoeia to the poem, Soto describes the class difference between the speaker and his date. The reader can interpret that the girl comes from a wealthy family, since she can keep on her porch light all the time. And that she can take care of herself and a pet. The reader learns about the pet when he walked toward / Her house, the one whose / Porch light burned yellow / Night and day, in any weather. / A dog barked at me (8 12). Washington Crossing The Delaware Compare And Contrast Essay Emmanuel Leutze s painting Washington Crossing the Delaware shares some similarities with David Shulman s poem Washington Crossing the Delaware ; however, the dissimilarities are more abundant. These works of art and literature portray the scene of that remembered Christmas day when Washington and his army set out to conquer to Hessian people. Although they have similarities, there are some differences in these works that are nothing less than noticeable. Join me in observing the similarities and dissimilarities in these pieces. The painting by Leutze expresses more of a chaotic scene while the Shulman s poem creates a slightly more composed environment. Struggle is more evident in the painting. While the poem is serene and instills confidence and excitement for battle in the reader, the painting depicts struggling men fighting for a cause we are not quite certain of. Also, the feeling depicted in the painting is predominantly distraught while the poem makes me feel the scene is filled with precise determination. Washington commands: so go alight, crew, and win! (Shulman line 14). This is him telling them to go sneak, fight, and win the battle. This makes evident some of the varying differences of these two works. You can see how in the painting Washington is not promoting ideas or confidence in his crew like he is the poem (Leutze Washington Crossing the Delaware). This is a leading reason in the difference of disorder. Also, the painting shows ice as a major obstacle, while in the poem no ice is mentioned. This shows how there is another element of conflict in the painting than in the written work which can add to the madness happening. The poem depicts the brave, fearless leader watching the army he is leading and rather triumphantly commanding them to go into battle and win (Shulman s Washington Crossing the Delaware ). Due to this rise in international responsibility from power, patriotism soared in the United States. Culturally films like 12 O clock High were produced highlighting important roles that were played in the defeat of the Axis powers during World War Two. On a more extensive note, the film displays what leadership influence tactics can be used to drastically turn a unit around during a time of war. This unit, part of the American Army Air Force, is known as the 918th Bomber Group located in England, during the year of 1942. At the beginning of the film, Col. A Visit to the Notre Dame Cathedral The Notre Dame Cathedral is certainly one of the most beautiful locations in the world, as the city of Paris as a whole and the building s surroundings contribute to making visitors acknowledge the importance of this monument. Construction on the cathedral started in 1163 and was largely finished by 1250, with most of its features emphasizing Gothic influences. The building s architecture, the sculptures present in it, and the impressive stained glass all stand as reminders that the French community invested most of its cultural values into the church at the time when it was constructed. From the very first moment when entering the cathedral one is likely to be struck by the silence dominating the massive interior. In spite of the somewhat annoying number of curious tourists (others probably saw my curiosity just as annoying as the noise), the church manages to maintain its quiet and peaceful nature. This is truly remarkable, taking into account that it is constantly filled with tourists through visiting hours. It is difficult to ignore the fact that the Notre Dame is one of most popular monuments in the world and that many visitors prefer this particular building to the Eiffel Tower. Its popularity certainly makes it difficult for one to feel the sacredness that it contains and that it was initially meant to put across. A conditional fee arrangement is basically a form of risk sharing whereby if the lawyer loses the case, the client does not have to pay. However, if the case is won, the lawyer can be recompensed through a success fee, which is worked out as a percentage of his cost. Another area which could be hit is that of cases which have enormous public importance, but which need large amounts of work, are difficult to win, and may attract relatively low levels of damages even if successful. These include some types of action against the police and Government, such as complaints by prisoners about their treatment. The Act does address these issues in that it provides for cases in excluded categories to be funded in exceptional circumstances; it remains to be seen whether this will be sufficiently flexible in practice. Another disadvantage is unfair trials. Where legal aid is refused, a trial may prove to be unfair of one party is represented but the other is not. This is potentially a breach of Article 6 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR), which guarantees the right to fair trial. In Steel v UK (2005) (or common known as the McLibel Two), Ds were environmental campaigners who were charged with defamation for disturbing leaflet criticizing nutritional content of McDonald s fast food. Personality Change And Age Difference Barbara Sarfo PSY 437 Advanced Research Method 07/20/2015 Personality Change and Age Difference Does the age difference have something to do with people change in their personality? A. Specific Aim The age an individual feels is related to changes in characteristic ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving over time. As people aged, they become more mature and they approach thing differently and that in a way has effects their personality either positively or negatively. The aim of the study was to find out if age difference has anything to do with personality change. B. Introduction Personality takes many shapes and forms and is affected by many factors. My understanding of personality is simply a genetic and environmentally determined set of psychological traits that influence our reactions in the world around us. Genetic because our parents possess a certain set of psychological personality traits that we tend to have in common with them so therefore in my opinion there are heritable personality traits. Personality is environmental because we each have our own separate experiences in the world and these experiences help form our unique personality. Neo Freudians such as Jung have given us a wide array of ideas of how they believe personality is developed and formatted. Jung in particular has a very interesting take on personality. It is this theory that I can most resonate with and apply to myself and even friends and family of mine. Current ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Alternative Sources Of Energy For Fossil Fuel In this day and age, finding an alternate source of energy to fossil fuel is essential. Humans are using up fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, faster than they can be made naturally. This means that there will be a time when all of the fossil fuels will have been used to power . To prevent a world without energy, many alternative sources have been harnessed. Six different pathways for energies were found: solar power, biomass, geothermal power, hydropower, wind power, and nuclear power. All of these are much better alternatives to fossil fuels, as they reduce carbon emissions. Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gasses in Earth s atmosphere, which when created in excess, causes things such as global warming to occur. But when they are compared to each other, some seem better than others in many different ways. Augustine states, For as I became a youth, I longed to be satisfied with worldly things, and I dared to grow wild in a succession of various and shadowy loves (24). Any young adult experiences the same things that Augustine is going through. Augustine struggled with knowing the difference between pure affection and unholy desire. He becomes ashamed of himself and goes into a spiral of sorrow. In chapter one Augustine says, If only there had been someone to regulate my disorder and turn to my profit the fleeting beauties of the things around me (24). He realizes if he had just listened to the words more closely, he would not be in the trouble that he is in. Augustine turns to the Lord and ask what can I do and why did I do this? • 36. Cocky versus Swagger in Beowulf and Sir Gowain Essay Cocky vs. Swagger In entertainment, no matter if it is movies, music, or plays. One can almost always look in the story line and find a hero. The hero is perceived to be the character that everyone looks to step forward in a time of need. The hero can be like a savior and is expected to be like a savior by the other characters in the story in any and every situation. There is also a case in stories where the hero has to be found and is more of the unsung type of character within a story in which that character has to learn how to adjust to the advantages and disadvantages of their heroism and how it may affect the other characters in the story. Beowulf and Sir Gowain posses these types of characteristics and by actually reading the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Heroes are heroes because they show exceptional amounts of courage, and they do it consistently on the everyday basis. That is not possible to do. The extraordinary things that Beowulf and Sir Gowain do are things that the average man would not do because of the lack of courage and confidence. That is why heroes are who they are, the best of the best. They stick out from the crowd and that is why one may feel like they deserve more than just the regular confidence that the average man gets, it is only necessary. Being a hero is more of a mental challenge than anything else, because one has to believe in oneself more than any other person can believe in them because whoever believes in the hero can not possibly know and understand just exactly what the hero is going through. The other characters will never know and understand why the hero faces the problems, defeats the problems, and overcomes the obstacles that the hero faces. All that the characters and the people want in the stories is for whom ever the hero is, they want that person to save them from the people or things that threaten them. In other words, the people do no care so much about what the hero is going through, the people just want the hero to deliver, so it is an absolute must for the hero s confidence to be above the average person. This also applies for real life experiences for this day and age. The only difference is this is real life, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For a trust to be deemed as completely constituted, all of the relevant formalities must have been satisfied by the settlor, hence the legal title of the property must transfer to the trustees. The reason for a conveyance of property to the hands of trustee is explained in Milroy v Lord (1862) by Turner L.J. is that a valid and effectual voluntary settlement will exist, when the settlor have done everything which was necessary according to the nature of property comprised in the settlement, which is to transfer that particular property to the trustee. This requirement of constitution of trust is clear and straightforward, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 41. Descriptive Essay About Camp Wakeshma Camp Wakeshma has something special about it and always has me wanting to stay longer. Since I was 12 years old, I ve been going to Wakeshma every summer for a week. This camp is so simple yet so fun and exciting. I m driving to camp with William Fulton and our moms when we turn onto Camp Wakeshma Rd. and go under the huge sign reading the name. We arrive late to camp due to a baseball tournament, but we check in and put our belongings in the cabin. William and I say our goodbyes and go find the rest of our cabin. Afterwards we line up for dinner by the flagpole. Nobody could help but realize one of our cabin mates lost an arm due to cancer. At night when we get ready for bed I see him change his shirt revealing his scars. As I go to bed, I don t think much of it. Today is a drag. Every year I can never sleep good the first night and this year it s no different. We do our regular routine leading up to lunch and discuss more rules while standing at the flagpole. Tony, the camp unit leader called our cabin to go in first and we made our way into the cafeteria. I stood atop of the stage where our table sat and you could hear the doors whine as the hungry kids pass through. Everyone is restless and excited for the first full day of camp. I m just as excited as everyone even though I m one of the oldest campers. The cafeteria was like a giant school bus with rows of loud kids. DINGGG the bell rings to capture everyone s attention. • 42. I Love A Book Analysis For as long as I can remember, I have loved reading. Even when I was just learning how to read in elementary school, I enjoyed it. However, because of the heavier workload in college and needing to work I do not have as much time to read leisurely as I would like. When I do get the opportunity to read, I dive right in and read quickly as to fill myself until the next chance. For example, over Christmas break I read a three book series in a little over twenty four hours because I craved reading that much. As I start a book, I begin by getting a feel for the characters and by the half way point I am in the same world as the book. I love feeling like I am a fly on the wall in a story: witnessing all the events, hearing the things they say, following my favorite characters throughout their lives. When I read I become so engulfed in the story that I hate for it to end, no matter how good the ending is. When I was in elementary, I we used the Accelerated Reader program, otherwise known as AR, and through that you could earn points for every book that you read and ... • 45. The General Theory Of Crime Historically, criminologists have separately studied the pattern and causes of criminal offending and the pattern and causes of victimization (Piquero et al., 2005, p.55). This began to change when criminologists recognized a strong relationship between offending and victimization. Scholars argue that this relationship can be explained by a common underlying trait of low self control. Gottfredson and Hirschi first introduced low self control as an explanation of offending in the General Theory of Crime, and more recent studies have applied the theory to victimization. In this paper, we will first discuss Gottfredson and Hirschi s General Theory of Crime as it applies to criminality. Then, we will review the literature to see how their ... In households where children are cared for and appropriately disciplined, those children develop the self control needed, through socialization, to resist the easy temptations offered by crime. This early developmental process is key in setting the stage for later life. (McMurtry Curling, 2008) Gottfredson and Hirschi strayed from Hirschi s previous theory that social control protected people from participating in criminal activities in favor of the conception that self control, or lack thereof, could be used to explain criminal behavior. According to the general theory of crime, crime occurs through the following process: (1) an impulsive personality to (2) lack of self control to (3) the withering of social bonds to (4) the opportunity to commit crime and delinquency to (5) deviant behavior. Gottfredson and Hirschi suggest that those who engage in crime do so to obtain immediate gratification. People with a propensity for criminal involvement are said to lack self control, or the ability to delay short term desires. Theorists state that this lack of self control can be traced back to early childhood when early indications of deviant behavior emerge. • 46. Role and Concept of Sleary s Circus in Hard Times Hard Times is a Charles Dickens novel set in the social backdrop of the Victorian era during the Industrial Revolution that took place during the 1850s. The ill effects of Victorian Utilitarianism are upheld in this moralistic vision of the writer. Unlike most of his novels, Hard Times is not based in London but in the red and black seemingly monotonous structures of Coketown. That being said, it still realistically allows the reader to observe the systems and structures of society forced to face various economic and social hardships. What preserves the novel as a social commentary is that the struggles in life and human emotions are still relevant for these times . The rise in capitalist ideals brought forth an age where the ... Mr. Sleary thus, acts as a protector and though he feels compassion for Sissy, he is aware that it is not economically viable for the company to keep her and therefore thinks of more suitable alternatives like her continued education. Unlike Gradgrind who condemns his daughter to an incompatible and unsuitable marriage. The circus as a whole with all its colours is a great visual contrast to the image evoked by Coketown. It is not shrouded by the by product of its labour, like the soot that coated the city. The circus, here, stands for all that is loyal and free. Nonetheless, there is a certain disdain in which the gypsies are viewed by the educated classes, as Bounderby puts it we are the kind of people who know the value of time, and you are the kind of people who don t know the value of time . This is primarily because they cannot be restrained by the laws and obligations of society. Dickens reiterates his own personal faith in those people, like the gypsies by highlighting the presence of complete trust, emotions and faith as opposed to the doubt prevalent in most of society, even with all the privileges and high standards of morality they seem to possess. The aspect of this study is as followed: Hypoglycemia has been a common clinical condition known to affect human development. Little has been done to define the resultant brain biochemical alterations. A controlled study of hypoglycemia in the newborn human infant is impossible, the infant rat was chosen as a model. During this experiment hypoglycemia was induced once daily for 18 days following birth resulted in generalized diminution of brain weight, cellularity, and protein content. The rate of formation of the myelin lipid sulfatide was decreased, as was the quantity of cerebroside sulfatied in brains of hypoglycemic animals. Phospholipids, gangliosides, and cholesterol were decreased only in proportion to the decrease in the brain weight. Brain glucose and glycogen concentrations were low in the brains of hypoglycemic animals, although ATP and phosphocreatine levels were not decreased.
